“Don’t Pass Me By” was the first song ever written by Ringo, and it was first recorded with, and released by, the Beatles on November 22, 1968. Now 54 years later to the day, this wonderful live rendition is offered from this momentous concert film.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band (Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Gregg Rolie, Hamish Stuart, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonnette) played at the Greek Theater and were filmed nearly 30 years to the day when Ringo and his very first All Starr Band played there on September 3, 1989. This performance marked the last show of that tour in 2019, which included shows throughout the US and Canada as well as Japan.  It also celebrated 30 years of wonderful music, with All Starrs from previous lineups including Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren, Jim Keltner, Edgar Winter, Eric Carmen and Wally Palmer, joining in the finale of “With A Little Help From My Friends.''

From its inception and first tour in 1989 with the inaugural All Starr lineup –
Joe Walsh, Dr. John, Billy Preston, Rick Danko and Levon Helm from The Band, Clarence Clemons and Nils Lofgren from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, and session drum legend Jim Keltner–until the current and 15th iteration – Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band, who he has called  “the best 1-800-band in the land,” deliver shows packed with hits that continue to delight audiences around the world. Ringo often says of the concerts that they are peace and love fests, “I love the audience and they love me and the band,” and that is exactly what was captured at the Greek, at that famous open air arena among the Redwoods in Griffith Park, on September 2, 2019.

Here is the track list, which reads like a greatest hits playlist to most of our lives:

1.  Matchbox
2.  It Don't Come Easy
3.  What Goes On
4.  Evil Ways
5.  Rosanna

New music: Neil Young, Richard Öhrn, The Jorgensens

Fans of classic rock, artful power pop and rousing Americana will want to check out a trio of new titles available now.

Artist:
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Title: World Record (Reprise)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, early Pearl Jam
Tell me more: World Record marks Neil Young and Crazy Horse's second album of new material released in 2022, coming only four months after the July release of ToastCo-produced by Rick Rubin and Young, the album is bolstered by Young's long-time on-and-off again outfit Crazy Horse (bassist Billy Talbot, drummer Ralph Molina, guitarist-accordion player Nils Lofgren). While the future of the planet is far from certain, Young carries out hope for our endangered home via the lovely opener "Love Earth." Young unleashes a sonic firestorm of blues-drenched grunge on "Break The Chain," a song that certifies Young and company can rock as powerfully as ever. The lyrics are bleak to be sure, as evidenced by the final verse: "Let's break the chain / No human home and scarce little time / Break the chain / Break the chain." Elsewhere, Young's concern for the earth is revisited via the more experimental accordion-adorned "The World (Is In Trouble Now)" where he sings: "The flowers growing from the ground / The sunlight shining down / My memories of the past delight / In all the things I found / Because the earth has held me so." Other powerful originals on the collection include the beautiful mid-tempo rocker "I Walk With You (Earth Ringtone)" anti-war plea "Walkin' On The Road (To The Future)," yearning distortion-and-feedback wrapped "Chevrolet, and gentle Americana-flavored "This Old Planet," the latter bolstered by the layered tandem sounds of accordion and piano. Artist:
Richard Öhrn
Title: Sounds in English (Big Stir Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Matthew Sweet, The Hollies, Richard X. Heyman, In Deed
Tell me more: Uppsala, Sweden's Richard Öhrn is out with his wonderful debut Sounds in English, an amazing introduction to his talents as singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. A member of the Swedish rock outfit In Deed that impressed in the early '00s with At 4000 Meters, Öhrn's new solo effort allows him to celebrate the pioneering sounds of a slew of his notable heroes — The Zombies, The Hollies, Simon & Garfunkel, The Searchers —  all while fusing those classic sounds fully with his own creative songcraft. The dozen tracks that span the disc are a true delight, with melody, harmony and emotion offered up in equal measure. The jangly opener "Seal Your Move" is bolstered by the artist's work on the 12-string Burns guitar as well as his melancholy mining vocals. The lovely folk song "5th Month Announcement" and dashing power pop sortie "Time's Not Running Out" are other early highlights on Sounds in English. "The Coolest Manners" is an immersive baroque pop gem, tapping into bona fide Zombies territory. The infectious melodic rocker "Take This Bottle," jazzy "Every Shade," dramatic "If I Could Read Your Mind" and sumptuous closer "Spanish Moon" are among the other shining originals on the album. Artist:
The Jorgensens
Title: Americana Soul (Paramour Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Johnnyswim, Americana
Tell me more: Americana Soul is the perfect introduction to The Jorgensens. A Minnesota-based group headed by married couple Kurt and Brianna Jorgensen, the troupe blends blues, soul, roots, jazz, R&B and others styles across the aptly titled Americana Soul. Opening the record is the inspired "Old Black Crow," a track featuring Kurt Jorgensen's strong lead vocals and muscular slide guitar work as well as a wonderful Latin funk finale. The followup "Miles" features Brianna Jorgensen's signature soprano positioned amidst a soundscape that includes slide guitar and the artful use of horns. The soulful "Dark Road" blends soul and gospel flourishes with some flashy guitar further enhancing the track. "Shake It" weaves and rolls via a deep groove whilst layered with powerful lead and harmony vocals. The blues ballad "Leave Your Light On" finds the couple sharing lead vocals and enhancing the traditional soundscape with creative harmonies. "State Line" is a luxurious foray that showcases Brianna Jorgensen's top-tier singing. Americana Soul is welcome addition to the growing Americana music movement. Information: TheJorgensens.com.

Arcade Fire shines at Kia Forum

Win Butler performing at the Kia Forum.

Review and photography by Robert Kinsler

Arcade Fire brought their "WE" tour to the legendary Kia Forum in Inglewood, CA on Wednesday, Nov. 16 for the first of two headline performances at the Los Angeles County venue.

For long-time fans of the Canadian indie rock band fronted by the talented husband and wife duo of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, the good news is that the group continues to inspire with soaring modern rock that draws its power through a fusion of alternative rock, Baroque pop, new wave, dance music and other styles.

Over the course of two hours, Arcade Fire covered a number of tracks from their wonderful 2022 studio album WE while revisiting a slew of past classics spanning from their 2004 debut Funeral to 2017's Everything Now. The enthusiastic crowd was fully in tune with the band, and thankfully thrilled with the band's riveting performance and the fantastic setlist.

Arcade Fire continues to find ways to fully connect with its audience. There were many times where members of the band would venture out into the crowd, or perform on a second stage positioned in the middle of the floor.

In fact, Arcade Fire performed their full encore on that second stage - including a moving version of Tom Petty's "Free Falling" before raising the roof with their own "Wake Up."

Artist:
The Beatles
Title: Revolver Special Edition (Capitol Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, The Zombies
Tell me more: The Beatles' 1966 album Revolver is widely considered one of the British band's most beloved albums. The newly-released Revolver Special Edition showcases just how brilliant John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — along with producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick — were at creating one of the greatest recordings of the 20th century over the course of a few short months leading up to its release in August 1966. The range of material across the album astounds; listeners will be reminded how many light years ahead the Fab Four were compared to their contemporaries. The material ranges from Harrison's propulsive rocker "Taxman," yearning "I Want To Tell You" and Indian music-immersed "Love You To" to McCartney's beautiful Baroque gem "For No One" and rapturous R&B blast "Got To Get You Into My Life." Lennon's talents are showcased via the driving power pop nugget "And Your Bird Can Sing," rollicking "Doctor Robert" and experimental masterpiece "Tomorrow Never Knows." The expanded deluxe edition of Revolver (the Super Deluxe 5CD Edition is the title reviewed in this column) includes a new stereo mix of the album by GRAMMY Award winning producer Giles Martin (son of the late George Martin) and Sam Okell, two "Sessions CDs" of outtakes, rehearsals, demos and studio chat, the original 1966 mono album, along with a bonus EP with stereo mixes and the original 1966 mono versions of "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" (those two epic singles preceded the release of Revolver). The expanded Revolver Special Edition also includes a 100-page book with a foreword by McCartney, an essay by Questlove, detailed track notes, photographs and ephemera including handwritten lyrics, tape boxes and extracts from artist Klaus Voormann's graphic novel on the making of the GRAMMY-winning original album cover. Watch this writer and TJR discuss the collections outtakes, rehearsals and studio chat via a video available on YouTube HERE. Information: TheBeatles.com

Artist:
Glen Phillips
Title: There Is So Much Here (Compass Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Toad the Wet Sprocket, Neil Finn, Aimee Mann
Tell me more: Beloved as the frontman for Toad the Wet Sprocket, singer-songwriter Glen Phillips is back with his latest solo album, There Is So Much HereA master at chronicling the emotion-filled events in own life with originals that are literate, infectious and timeless, Glen Phillips mined his experiences going through the COVID lockdown on his way to the creation of the marvelous 11-track disc. This was also a singular period where Phillips used the rare experience of being home for an extended stretch to reflect on his life in ways new to him. The range of material across the album will please fans of Phillips' past parade of triumphs. The soaring "Other Birds of Prey" is a euphoric rocker that recalls the high marks set on Toad the Wet Sprocket's Dulcinea. Elsewhere the bouncy "I Was a Riot" (a particularly confessional examination of the end of a relationship), lovely piano-anchored "The Bluest Eye," spacious "Brand New Blue," melodic rocker "Center Of The Circle" and jazz-infused "The Sound of Drinking" — the latter an introspective look at everyday joys that draws favorable sonic comparisons with the work of Bruce Cockburn  allure the listener. The acoustic "Skeleton For School," infectious "Stone Throat," and luxurious "Call the Moondust" are other standouts on the masterwork. Information: GlenPhillips.com

Artist:
Jeff Berlin
Title: Jack Songs (Jeff Berlin Music Group)
You might like if you enjoy: Jack Bruce, Cream, Eric Johnson, Alex Lifeson
Tell me more: Although Jack Bruce passed away in October 2014, he was already widely regarded as one of the greatest rock and roll bassists of all time. Now Bruce   best known for fronting the '60s rock trio Cream (the supergroup also featured guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker— is being celebrated by modern-day bassist-composer Jeff Berlin on the aptly-titled Jack Songs. Berlin stands as one of the greatest bass players of his generation, having garnered recording and performance credits with a slew of jazz and rock greats including Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, Jon McLaughlin, Patrick MorazFrank Zappa, and more. Now he joins forces with a who's who of greats on a Jack Songs to complete a truly ambitious project inspired by Giles Martin's approach on The Beatles' Love CD. "His (Martin) production work on this CD is fantastic. I tried to follow his example of his fitting various Beatle song quotes from different tunes into each tune by doing a similar thing by combining different Jack songs," Berlin said of his approach. Among the greats who lend their talents across Jack Songs is Sammy Hagar (Van Halen), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band), Eric Johnson, Nathan East (Fourplay), Geddy Lee (Rush), Tony Levin and many more. Playing their signature blend of blues, rock, funk and jam with artful force, Big Head Todd and the Monsters returned to The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA on Wednesday night to thrill a packed and enthusiastic crowd. Performing a 110-minute set of material, Todd Park Mohr (lead vocals, guitar), Brian Nevin (drums), Rob Squires (bass) and Jeremy Lawton (keyboards, slide guitar) impressed from the moment they hit the stage of the legendary venue.

Opening with their enticing blues-flavored original "Josephina" (a track off their wonderful 2014 album Black Beehive), the quartet offered up the track with the perfect blend of raw power and nuanced virtuosity.

Todd Park Mohr immersed in the
music on Nov. 9, 2022.

From there, BHTM performed a fantastic new original, "Thunderbird." A catchy country-tinged riff rocker bolstered by a fiery lead guitar solo courtesy of Mohr, the other three members of the outfit created a dynamic approach further amplifying the power of the cut.

Brian Nevin behind the kit at The Coach House.

With the exception of a brief hiccup during "King Kong"
— where Mohr's guitar cut out  BHTM energetically delivered each song as if it was their greatest hit. An emotive laid back nugget, "Ellis Island" allowed the troupe to explore the corner of the sonic universe where blues and jazz meet; the foursome turned on a dime performing the '90s-styled reggae rocker "Please Don't Tell Her" with a breezy vibe adding to the magic.

Jeremy Lawton at the Coach House.

Other standouts of the set included the Texas-blues mining "Dirty Juice" with Lawton tearing it up on slide guitar and Mohr's powerhouse vocals showcased, the groove-and-blues gem "New World Arisin'," "Vincent Of Jersey" with Mohr taking the beginning alone accompanied by his guitar, and a flat-out bewitching version of the band's 1993 hit "Bittersweet," the latter a sweeping and zestful version enhanced by the work of all four band members.

Bassist Rob Squires on Nov. 9, 2022.

BHTM also celebrated several of their heroes during the set; early there was a ferocious Chicago blues take on Buddy Guy's "Sit and Cry (The Blues)"
— originally recorded back in 1958 — while later on they covered John Lee Hooker's timeless "Boom Boom" with equal abandon.

From left, Todd Park Mohr and Jeremy Lawton at the Coach House.

The encore was definitely worth the wait. The Boulder, Colorado band delivered a mighty version of "Circle," the rousing single from the band's major label debut Sister Sweetly. Park's emotive and convincing vocals were fully in sync with the song's refined beginnings and build to a huge classic rock-styled finale.

BHTM closed out the memorable set with a fun run through the Ramones' "I Want To Be Sedated."

From left, Jim Dalton and Jeremy Lawton at the Coach House.

Opening the night with a 45-minute set of Americana-meets-blues, Jim Dalton
— accompanied by the aforementioned Jeremy Lawton — featured tracks from Dalton's full-length 2021 album In My Head

From left, Jim Dalton and Jeremy Lawton at the Coach House.

Dalton, the lead guitarist of Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, brought a loose and authentic approach to his performance. The countrified "Amigos" and satiric "Serial Killer" (Dalton wrote the latter song after reading a news report about a young woman who wanted to marry serial killer Charles Manson) were among the standouts. My favorite song of the pair's set was Dalton's absolutely luxurious ballad "In My Head."
