August 31, 2022– a-ha is gearing up to release their 11th studio album, True North, on October 21, 2022.  The elegiac, soaring first single “I’m In” opens True North. “Breathe in, Just breathe, There are times, Good times after these” sings Morten Harket at his most emotive. With this single, Magne Furuholmen, Morten and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy open a new phase for a-ha. Since their world-wide breakthrough with “Take On Me” in 1985, they have always pushed forwards.

For True North, a-ha decided on a new approach. Their first collection of new songs since 2015’s Cast In Steel is more than a straightforward album – and unique for a-ha. While True North is a new album, it is also a film capturing a-ha recording the songs during November 2021 in Bodø, the Norwegian city located 90km above the Arctic Circle. “With every album we tweak it, to see if there’s a different way to go about it,” explains Paul.
Magne, who wrote the moving “I’m In”, says it is “a song about total commitment and a show of support for someone who is troubled. Real commitment is a leap of faith. Everyone knows how difficult it can be to offer commitment and support unconditionally, but this is what it takes to make anything worthwhile happen – love, friendship, change, self-improvement, careers, a better world. Easier said than done of course but it begins with an attitude, then uttering the words. After this it is all hard work to realise whatever potential your commitment has in the world. Without this attitude everything just gets bogged down with conflicting thoughts, doubts and fear. Just say it: ‘I’m in’.”
And with “I’m In” and True North’s other 11 tracks – six written by Magne, six by Paul – a-ha underline their commitment to the band by tackling something new.
With True North being an album and immediate document of its creation, a-ha have entered a new world. “First, we had the idea to record a studio session live,” says Paul. “Then, to film a studio session. That grew into more of a production with the Norwegian orchestra, the Arctic Philharmonic, who we have collaborated with.” It is all there in the film. The deeply affecting and inscrutable film accompanying “I’m In” is extracted from the long-form film integral to True North.
In the True North film, a-ha perform and record with the orchestra. Also caught on camera in the landscape around Bodø, Magne, Morten and Paul discuss True North. In recurring vignettes, actors portray life in the north. The multidimensional film describes a narrative arc embodying the spirit of the new songs, showing how all of us are connected to the environment. Long-time a-ha collaborator Stian Andersen is the director. “True North is a letter from a-ha, from the Arctic Circle, a poem from the far north of Norway with new music,” says Magne.
About what is coming and where we all are now, True North’s songs are imbued with a sense of place and a deep connection with how we interact with the environment. With this unadorned dispatch from Norway, a-ha show where they are from and who they are, and how the connection between the two is unbreakable. It’s no wonder that True North is a-ha at their most revealing, most personal, most affecting. Never before has the spirit of a-ha been so exposed.
The instantly affecting “I’m In” defines the realm encapsulated by True North. Open to the elements, it is fragile territory. The sweeping orchestral arrangement is by Kjetil Bjerkestrand, whose association with a-ha stretches back to 1994’s “Shapes That Go Together” single. He has also worked with Magne, Morten and Paul outside a-ha. Although True North finds a-ha embracing new ways of working, continuity is also important to all three members of the band.
Balances are struck – between the fresh approach and the qualities inherent to a-ha, between the songs themselves and the overarching concept of True North. “I’m In” opens the door on this thrilling new chapter for a-ha. Nothing encapsulates it better.
Sony Music Entertainment Premium Content and Trafalgar will release the True North film, the accompaniment to the studio album of the same title. The True North film is out in select cinemas worldwide on September 15, 2022 via Trafalgar Releasing and includes a special behind-the-scenes featurette, exclusive to cinemas. New Music: Marcus King, Gypsy Soul, 'We All Shine On; Celebrating The Music Of 1970' compilation, Ben E. King

Here are my latest listens that are definitely worth sharing in hopes you will delight in these titles too!

Artist:
Marcus King
Title: Young Blood (American Records / Republic Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Gary Clark Jr., Marcus King Band, Walter Trout
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/guitar master Marcus King is back with Young Blood, a sharp 11-track set of hard-hitting Southern-fried blues rock. Music lovers who miss the guitar heroes of yesteryear should run out and pick up King's new album. While listeners thrill in King's otherworldly talents (King began playing guitar at age 3), they will be gripped by a set of songs that collectively chronicle a dark period for King following a devastating break-up. The artist honestly addresses drug and alcohol excess as well as the real-life issues of depression and mental health. Tracks such as "It's Too Late," "Lie Lie Lie," "Pain" and "Good and Gone" showcase the rising 26-year-old South Carolina native focusing simultaneously on his signature gritty vocals and astonishing lead guitar work in the service of stylish genre-meshing songs blending Southern rock, blues and soul in good measure. Elsewhere  take the lovely "Rescue Me," sparse "Blues Worse Than I Ever Had" and groove-centered "Blood On The Tracks" and "Dark Cloud"  King uses his influences to create that same kind of dynamic firepower amidst a relatively quiet stormInformation: MarcusKingOfficial.com

Artist:
Gypsy Soul
Title: Cover Story (Off The Beaten Track Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Kate Bush, Bat for Lashes, Gypsy Soul
Tell me more: For an independent artist to defy the odds and release a parade of 15 celebrated albums is impressive. But that is truly the continuing saga of Gypsy Soul, a genre-defying duo featuring the talents of singer Cilette Swann and multi-instrumentalist Roman Morykit. The musical pair have returned with Cover Story, a disc filled with reworked and original takes of selections by 10 notable artists who have influenced their own music. The completion of the wonderful album was uncertain when the husband-and-wife duo were both stricken with COVID in 2021 and Morykit almost died from complications from the coronavirus. These are not simple paint-by-numbers presentations of the originals  there is a level of creativity and craft that is palpable across the album. Songs that benefit from Gypsy Soul's adventuresome reinterpretations include Duran Duran's "Ordinary World," Tears For Fears' "Mad World," Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic," Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" and The Beatles' "Day Tripper," the latter a delightful blend of jazzy and blues stylings. Information: GypsySoul.com.

Artist:
Ben E. King
Title: Supernatural Soul (AFM Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Ben E. King, Vintage Trouble, Bootsy Collins, Bette Smith
Tell me more: Recently a group of friends and admirers joined forces to celebrate the talents of the late soul singer great Ben E. King (who sadly passed away in April 2015) with recut versions of his best-known classics. The results shine across Supernatural Soul, an 11-track album available now via audio CD and on vinyl. Highlights on this excellent celebration include the affecting "Stand By Me" (bolstered by a wonderful tandem vocals between King and Bette Smith as well as flashy guitar work from Ronnie Earl), the funky gem "Supernatural Thing" with bass virtuoso Bootsy Collins, the lovely "Spanish Harlem" (featuring flamenco guitar master Rafael Riqueni), soulful "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)," grooving "Do It In The Name Of Love" and smooth R&B cut "I Had A Love." Information: Order the CD and/or vinyl HERE

Artists:
Bill Lloyd, The Armoires, Mitch Easter, Lannie Flowers, Irene Peña, more
Title: We All Shine On: Celebrating The Music Of 1970 (Spyderpop Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Power Pop, 1970s rock and pop music, Lannie Flowers
Tell me more: Anyone interested in getting a bona fide introduction  or immersive reminder  about the strength of music released in 1970 need simply listen to the wonderful new collection We All Shine On: Celebrating The Music Of 1970. Produced by celebrated music journalist/author/drummer John M. Borack, the 22-track collection features a myriad of artists covering some of the most beloved cuts of 1970 with stylish aplomb. Kicking off with Alan Petsche and Delbert Raines' soulful rendition of "Are You Ready" the track is bolstered by a gospel choir and fiery lead guitar work. Other early standouts on the outstanding collection include Bill Lloyd's rootsy take on Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me Not To Come," the Armoires' melodious reading of "Yellow River," Mitch Easter' inventive reworking of the Delfonics' "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," Lannie Flowers' alt country-styled take on "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and the Popdudes' rousing version of the Guess Who's "Share The Land." The track listing retains its magic and power on the second half of the disc courtesy of The Brothers Steve's inspired reading of the Neil Diamond hit "Crackling' Rosie," the Legal Matters' exuberant run through George Harrison's "What Is Life," the Test Pressings' rollicking take on "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" and Diamond Hands' psychedelic-meets-garage rock spin jaunt through the Kinks classic "Lola." A terrific collection from start to finish. Information: BigStirRecords.com

CCR's Doug "Cosmo" Clifford vault release w/Bobby Whitlock - 'California Gold' out on Sept. 9, 2022

Here is cool news about legendary drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford and singer Bobby Whitlock...Robert Kinsler

CALIFORNIA GOLD DISCOVERED IN COSMO’S VAULT

Two legendary rock musicians, Doug Clifford and Bobby Whitlock join forces with a host of incredible players to create a gem that is finally being released on Sept. 9.

RENO, Nevada -- Doug Cosmo” Clifford, the iconic Creedence drummer, has a treasure trove of unreleased recordings hes produced over the years, all safely stored in Cosmos Vault.

This past summer he re-discovered what he thought was a long-lost album called California Gold. It features Bobby Whitlock on lead vocals, singing 10 original songs he and Cosmo co-wrote together.   The album was recorded at the infamous "Cosmos Factory" and various other San Francisco Bay Area studios and the result is indeed a newly unearthed treasure.

The rock luminaries joined forces to create a perfect good time rock-n-roll record.   Doug Clifford is known for his powerful drum style in one of the most popular American bands from the late 60s and early 70s, Creedence Clearwater Revival.  Co-founder of Derek & The Dominos, Bobby Whitlock is well known to rock fans, critics and music aficionados.  As well as being a singer/songwriter, guitarist and Hammond B-3 player, the musician has enjoyed his own string of hits in collaboration with Eric Clapton including “Layla,” “Bell Bottom Blues,” "Tell The Truth" and more.

Doug and Bobby gathered other top shelf musicians along their journey including producer/writer and bassist extraordinaire, Donald "Duck" Dunn who ushered in the sounds of Stax and played bass on literally thousands of recordings. Other musicians include Tom Miller on bass and David Vega and Mike O’Neill on guitar.

The songs are a combination of roots rock and melodic blues, all natural with no filler. Whitlock’s powerful and distinctive vocals are in top form and Cosmo’s drumming is rock solid, stretching beyond his well-known Creedence grooves.

For reasons that shall remain a mystery, California Gold was somehow lost in time. But now that the album has been re-discovered, perhaps its time is here and now.

The California Gold release date for streaming and downloads is Sept. 9 via Cliffsong Records, distributed globally by BFD/The Orchard. CD available for pre-order now at https://orcd.co/DougCliffordCaliforniaGold

August 30 – (Los Angeles, CA) – The Head And The Heart have released the video for “Don’t Show Your Weakness,” a track off of their latest album Every Shade of Blue that came out this past spring via Warner Records/Reprise Records. Watch it below.

The video was directed by Jacqueline Justice and creative directed by Charity Rose Thielen. Charity noted “The initial inspiration for the video came after Matty showed me a two plus minute video of his recent endoscopy examining his vocal cords. Jacquline and Drew helped further develop this concept using both surreal and real references to the exam footage, weaving animation with real life.”

The band went on to say that “Don't Show Your Weakness explores fragility and strength and revels in the often blurry territory in which these two seemingly opposing traits intersect. This colorful and mysterious video is a celebration of the liberation that comes when we allow the most vulnerable parts of ourselves to be laid bare for all to see.”

The Head And The Heart recently released acoustic versions of “Virginia (Wind In The Night)” and the title track of their latest studio album “Every Shade of Blue.” Since the album's late April 2022 release, it has generated 25 million streams globally. Listen to the acoustic versions here.

The Head And The Heart will resume their Every Shade of Blue 2022 North American Tour on September 10th. Special guests joining the band in select cities include Shakey Graves and Hiss Golden Messenger. Tickets for all shows are now on sale.

Every Shade of Blue was produced by GRAMMY-award winning songwriter, producer and engineer Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Pink, The Shins, Tegan and Sara) except for album tracks “Shadows”, “Don’t Show Your Weakness” and “Love We Make” which were produced by Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Wet), and “Paradigm”, produced by John Hill and Sammy Witte (Florence + The Machine, Portugal The Man, Cage The Elephant), and mastered by Emily Lazar and Chris Allgood at The Lodge, NY.
