Fans of power pop, melodic rock, indie rock and stellar songcraft will want to plan to pick up the forthcoming 'International Pop Overthrow: Volume 23' on Sept. 9, 2022...Robert Kinsler

Omnivore Recordings and The International Pop Overthrow Music Festival Announce
International Pop Overthrow: Volume 23
Out On September 9, 2022

Featuring Songs From April March, Fernando Perdomo, The Loud Family and Anton Barbeau,
The Rave-Ups, Seth Swirsky, Kimberley Rew and
Lee Cave-Berry, and many more

July 28, 2022: Omnivore Recordings and The International Pop Overthrow Music Festival are proud to present International Pop Overthrow: Volume 23, the first since before the pandemic: a three-disc compilation featuring 68 tracks by artists from all over the world who have played the International Pop Overthrow festival… along with some who haven’t.

The IPO compilation goes back as far as the festival, to 1998 when Vol. 1 was a single disc. Since then, the compilation had expanded to two discs the following year, and then three discs in 2002 for Vol. 5, and it has remained a three-disc set through 2022. IPO Vol. 23 showcases artists from nine different countries, doing just about every subgenre of pop music, including power pop, pop/rock, folk/pop, psychedelic pop, garage, indie-rock, modern rock, etc., making it one of the most well-rounded compilations available to the general public.

Although the International Pop Overthrow festival is essentially a showcase for unsigned bands, the compilation has featured signed acts, as well as acts who have gone on to be signed. These include Jason Falkner, Brendan Benson, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Jellyfish; Imperial Drag), AM Radio, Marvin Etzioni (Lone Justice), and Shoes (power pop legends!).

Acts on Vol. 23 to watch out for include:

• April March (sunshine pop chanteuse and animator)
• Fernando Perdomo (producer and member of Echo In The Canyon film band)
• The Loud Family (featuring Game Theory’s Scott Miller) and Anton Barbeau
• David Minchin From The Innocents (Aussie power pop legends)
• Seth Swirsky (Grammy-nominated® songwriter, filmmaker and author)
• The Rave-Ups (Classic Alternative rockers back on the scene)
• Kimberley Rew (founding member of The Soft Boys and “Walking On Sunshine” writer) and Lee Cave-Berry

When mainstream pop/rock fans play any volume of the IPO compilation, their first response is invariably “this is great; I had no idea people were still making music like this!”. Well, they certainly are, and you can find some of the best examples of it on IPO Vol. 23!

The Kinks announce deluxe reissues of two classic albums for 50th anniversary

Check out this exciting news. These Kinks releases sound amazing...Robert Kinsler

The Kinks

Muswell Hillbillies / Everybody’s In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star

Deluxe Box Set, 2CD, 1LP, 2LP, 2CD, 1CD x 2, Digital

50th anniversary, combined deluxe reissues of these two classic Kinks albums

Worldwide release date: Sept 9 2022.

Listen To A Previously Unreleased Version of “Celluloid Heroes (US Single Version 2022 Edit)

In 1971, the great British rock group The Kinks embarked on a new phase of their career by signing with RCA Records. Freed from their old label Pye’s insistence on hit singles, Ray Davies’ song writing accelerated his band’s move towards a new identity as makers of thematically ambitious, tenderly personal albums, building on preceding cult successes such as The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Buoyed by one more smash to start the decade –“Lola” – this most English of bands also firmly turned its sights towards the USA, where their exciting, charismatic live shows were reciprocally building a fervent new American fanbase.

This period’s first Kinks album, Muswell Hillbillies, is for many people their best of all. It conversely looked back on Ray and Dave Davies’ London roots, telling tales of working-class families migrating from the war-torn and redevelopment-ravaged inner city to the strange, leafy suburbs of North London.

“Now with a new record company and a new image, I could bring some of the old wild western spirit into my music,” Ray Davies said. “These albums capture the re-emergence of the Kinks as a touring band.” Dave Davies adds “Muswell Hillbillies is one-of my favorite Kink’s albums. It’s a bit of a backstory to the Davies family and the characters involved.”

Muswell Hillbillies’ release was supported by more US touring, including two 1972 nights at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall. Tapes of those anarchic shows, heavy on Muswell material, formed the live half of 1972’s double-album, Everybody's In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star. Its studio sides explored The Kinks’ long months on the American road with wistful humour. Its epic finale, ‘Celluloid Heroes’, confirmed the band’s new world. Among the elite cream of Kinks songs, it saw Ray use Hollywood as a prism through which to view ordinary Americans’ bittersweet dreams.

The announcement comes alongside the release of “Celluloid Heroes (US Single Version 2022 Edit)”. Ray Davies composed the classic Kinks track reflecting on everyday folk aspiring to be Hollywood stars. The song names several famous actors of 20th century film (including Greta Garbo, Rudolph Valentino, Bela Lugosi, Bette Davis, Marilyn Monroe) and mentions LA’s Hollywood Boulevard, alluding to its Walk of Fame. Taken from The Kinks’ seminal 1972 RCA album Everybody’s In Show-Biz - Everybody’s A Star. Listen to the previously unreleased version HERE.

New Music: The Hagers, She & Him, Barney Bubbles

Several new audio titles and a noteworthy book are featured in my column this week.

Artist:
The Hagers
Title: The Complete Capitol Albums (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Everly Brothers, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard
Tell me more: Listening to the wonderful recordings that fill Omnivore Recordings' The Complete Capitol Albums by American country duo The Hagers, it defies belief that the team failed to ever score a top hit on the Billboard charts. Jim and John Hager recorded three albums for Capitol Records: The Hagers and Two Hagers Are Better Than One in 1970, and Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag in 1971. Additionally, the identical twins appeared 135 times on "Hee Haw" between 1969 and 1985. With the appreciation and explosion of Americana and roots music over the past decade, it's not a stretch to see there may very well be a new appreciation of The Hagers in 2022. The vocal talents of the twins shine across the 30-track collection. The lovely "Loneliness Without You," lively "I'm Her Fun," affecting take on Buck Owens' "Tender Loving Care," soaring "Give It Time," elegant "Flowers Need Sun Too" and nuanced cover of Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings" are early highlights. Late disc standouts include the lovely "Second Fiddle," lovely "I'm Miles Away," countrified "Motherhood, Apple Pie & The Flag," alluring "Four Strong Winds" and Everly Brothers-styled "California On My Mind." Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com

Artist:
She & Him
Title: Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson (Fantasy)
You might like if you enjoy: She & Him, Brian Wilson
Tell me more: She & Him  M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel  are back with their first new full-length album since 2016, the delightful Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson. The new title features the duo's signature blend of 1960s pop sheen and indie rock sensibilities, a perfect fit with Wilson's timeless songcraft. While She & Him cover a few of Wilson's best-known hits, they more often stray off the beaten path across the 14-track set. The strength of the album spans from the uplifting "Do It Again" and "Good To My Baby" to the melancholy-adorned "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Melt Away" and darker currents of " 'Til I Die" (the disc's most stirring track). A touching tribute to the 80-year-old Wilson and welcome return from She & Him in one essential collection. Information: sheandhim.com

ROCK 'N' ROLL READ

Title:
The Wild World of
Barney Bubbles
Author: Paul Gorman
Publisher: Thames & Hudson
Pages: 240 pages; 580 illustrations
Tell me more: Previously published in 2009 under the title Reasons to Be Cheerful, the just published  The Wild World of Barney Bubbles is an expanded and immersive celebration of the visual work of pioneering graphic artist Barney Bubbles. The 240-page book penned by journalist-author Paul Gorman is bolstered by contributions from Peter Saville, Clarita Hinojosa, Billy Bragg and Art Chantry. The book features hundreds of seldom seen photographs, working sketches, notebook images and original artwork. Readers who journey through the book will appreciate how fully Bubbles  born Colin Maximilian Fulcer in 1942  was able to use arresting graphic design as a bridge between fine art and music. Among the diverse field of music makers to feature Bubbles' work were Hawkwind, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, the Psychedelic Furs, Carlene Carter and many more. Perhaps the biggest takeaway from spending time inside the pages of The Wild World of Barney Bubbles is how Bubbles' work wonderfully avoided a single style while soaring no matter the discipline. Sadly, Gorman died in November 1983. He was only 41Information: thamesandhudsonusa.com.

The Lone Bellow Return With Gleaming New Single "Gold" // Fall Tour Announced, On Tour Now With Maren Morris

Exciting news that the Lone Bellow is back with new music. Check out the trio's shimmering new track "Gold." I first caught the group at the Stagecoach Festival back in April 2013 (read my coverage of that memorable appearance HERE).

July 21, 2022 - Today, Nashville-based trio The Lone Bellow released their new single titled “Gold.” The first new release since their triumphant 2020 album Half Moon Light, “Gold” embodies an unvarnished intensity with a galvanizing look at the real-life impact of the opioid crisis. Recorded with their longtime bassist Jason Pipkin and drummer Julian Dorio, the chorus explodes in a wild collision of bright piano tones, potent beats, and massively stacked guitars.

Listen To “Gold” HERE.

“We don’t ever try to write songs with an agenda, so with ‘Gold’ the idea was to tell the story from the perspective of someone in a hard situation—in this case, a guy who’s stuck in the downward spiral of addiction,” stated guitarist Brian Elmquist. “We’ve sung ‘Gold’ as a folk song in the past, but for the recording we wanted to really experiment and push our sound as far as it could go.”

The Lone Bellow are currently on tour this summer supporting Maren Morris with upcoming dates that include Salt Lake City, Boise, San Diego, and Phoenix among others. They have also announced their fall headline tour which kicks off on October 22nd in Stoughton, WI and includes stops at Chicago’s Thalia Hall, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, DC’s 9:30 Club, and NYC’s Webster Hall among others. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10am local. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.thelonebellow.com/tour.

Founded by Zach Williams, Kanene Donehey Pipkin, and Brian Elmquist, The Lone Bellow made their auspicious debut in 2013 with the self-titled, Charlie Peacock-produced album that quickly landed at No. 64 on the Billboard 200. It later turned up on best-of-the-year lists from the likes of Paste and PopMatters. With over 100 million career streams to date, The Lone Bellow’s past output also includes the Aaron Dessner-produced Then Came the Morning (a 2015 effort that earned them an Americana Music Award nomination) and Walk Into a Storm (a 2017 release produced by Dave Cobb and hailed by NPR for its “warmly rousing, gospel-inflected Americana”).

Kris Kristofferson to release "Live At Gilley's - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981" on September 2 via New West Records

Here is a media release with wonderful news about an upcoming live release featuring singer-songwriter great Kris Kristofferson...Robert Kinsler

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON TO RELEASE LIVE AT GILLEY’S - PASADENA, TX: SEPTEMBER 15th, 1981, SEPTEMBER 2nd VIA NEW WEST RECORDS

FEATURING LINER NOTES WRITTEN BY MICKEY GILLEY, GEORGE STRAIT, AND BILLY SWAN

SHARES “SUNDAY MORNIN’ COMIN’ DOWN” TODAY

Kris Kristofferson
will release Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 on September 2, 2022 via New West Records. The previously unreleased 15-song set was the final date of Kristofferson’s 1981 tour and was recorded at the legendary Pasadena, TX honky tonk most well known for its role in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy. Kristofferson is backed by an incredible live band featuring Stephen Bruton, Billy Swan, Donnie Fritts, Tommy McClure, Glen Clark, and Sammy Creason. The album also features exclusive liner notes written by the country music legend & Gilley’s co-owner Mickey Gilley, as well as additional pieces written by the legendary George Strait, and Billy Swan.

Today, Holler shared the performance highlight “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down," saying the recording "...captures an icon in his prime, the raw energy of the audience surging throughout the record." Hear "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" from Live at Gilley's - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 HERE

The Boot previously shared the concert’s lead off song, saying "As Kristofferson rolls through 'Me and Bobby McGee,' the energy in the room is palpable, with waves of screams from the exhilarated crowd audible throughout the rollicking performance. Although the song has taken on a life of its own over the decades, Kristofferson's fiery performance from the Gilley's stage showcases his electrifying and unequivocal level of artistry."

From his liner notes written three months before his passing in May, Mickey Gilley offered, “Gilley’s could hold several thousand people, but the club was very intimate. You were right there on the stage with people all around you. You could bend down and shake hands with people.” He continued, “Right next to the club was the recording studio, and we recorded everything that was done onstage. We could record onto the 24-track machine that we had in the studio, then we would do the mixing…We booked a lot of shows around that time, including some people I didn’t think would want to play the club. We got some acts that made me think, ‘Are you kidding me?’...Kris Kristofferson was one of those artists that I didn’t think would want to play Gilley’s, because he was such a big name and a tremendous talent.”

George Strait exclaimed, “What a great album this is! Classic Kristofferson songs throughout, and live!! Kris was in his prime and his vocals were outstanding and very soulful as always. I got to play Gilley's a few times back in those days and this record takes me right back there. You can tell the crowd is loving him and he’s loving them right back. That’s what it’s all about. It was an exciting time to say the least. So close your eyes and listen to this record. Imagine you’re right there standing in front of the stage with the man himself looking right at you. I think you’ll get a really good idea of what Gilley's was like back then when Kris played there. What a treat that must’ve been.”

Kris Kristofferson's Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15th, 1981 will be available across digital platforms, on compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A very limited to 300 White Vinyl Edition will be available exclusively at Texas Retailers while a limited, foil stamped and numbered to 750, Opaque Metallic Silver Vinyl Edition will be available via Vinyl Me, Please.
