July 7, 2022: Omnivore Recordings has announced 4 classic Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers albums for 2022, all reproduced for CD and vinyl for the first time since their original releases.
Their debut album, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, featuring the tracks “New England” and “Here Come The Martian Martians,” will get its release on August 19, with an exclusive orange colored variant for Independent retail. That version of the band included drummer David Robinson (The Cars) and Greg “Curly” Keranen on bass (The Rubinoos).
Rock ‘n’ Roll With The Modern Lovers, their sophomore release which was also produced by Beserkley Records founder Matthew King Kauffman and Glen Kolotin (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin) will be released on September 16, with an exclusive red colored variant for Independent retail. It features the Top 5 UK hit “Egyptian Reggae”.
The following release will be the band’s first live album, Modern Lovers ‘Live’, out October 21 with an exclusive yellow colored variant for Independent retail, which was recorded at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in 1977. While the US might not have caught on to the magic of Jonathan Richman, the UK certainly did. ‘Live’ features Jonathan and the Modern Lovers performing classics from their first two releases to an enthusiastic crowd. (The eight-minute version of “Ice Cream Man” should inform that!) It was co-Produced by Beserkley Records founder Matthew King Kauffman and pop-legend and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Famer, Kenny Laguna.
Lastly, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers’ third release Back In Your Life will be available on CD/vinyl on November 11 with an exclusive green colored variant for Independent retail. Produced by Beserkley Records founder Matthew King Kauffman and pop-legend and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall Of Famer Kenny Laguna, the album features the Richman staples, “Abdul And Cleopatra,” “Affection,” and the title track, “Back In Your Life”. It also signals the ending of Richman’s Beserkley tenure.
