New music: 'Shine On: A Tribute to Pete Ham,' Melanie, Victoria Hallman

A marvelous new tribute to Badfinger singer-songwriter Peter Ham, as well as the release of long lost recordings featuring Melanie and Victoria Hallman are available now.

Artists:
Dan Baird, Sweet Lizzy Project, Shelby Lynne, Dennis Diken, Ken Sharp, more
Title: Shine On: A Tribute to Pete Ham (Y&T Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Matthew Sweet, Shelby Lynne, The Beatles, power pop, The Georgia Satellites
Tell me more: Badfinger lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Pete Ham was among the great rising stars of the early 1970s. Indeed, the man born Peter William Ham's parade of enduring hit originals include "No Matter What," "Day After Day" and "Baby Blue"; he also co-wrote the ballad "Without You," a hit for Harry Nilsson. Sadly, Ham died by suicide on April 24, 1975 at the age of 27 in the wake of band- and record label-related issues including financial woes. Now the Welsh artist is the focus of an ambitious and well-deserved tribute album released by Y&T Music titled Shine On: A Tribute to Pete Ham. Featuring 35 new recordings of songs written or co-written by Ham, proceeds from the project will go to Mental Health America of Southeast Florida. The charitable aim of the project is enhanced by the strength of the diverse field of artists who revisit Ham classics on the two-disc Shine On. The jangly opener "No More" features the strengths of singer Mary Lee Kortes and guitar ace Eric Ambel. Ex-Georgia Satellites lead singer Dan Baird offers up a truly rollicking take on "I Can't Take It." Andrew Hyra revisits "Shine On" via a poignant Americana-flavored reading adorned by nice harmony vocals and the slide guitar work of John Keane. Rising Cuban rockers Sweet Lizzy Project perform a stirring cover of "Perfection." Shelby Lynne's original interpretation of "Day After Day" is as dramatic as it is beautiful. Mary Lou Lord's emotive vocals capture the romantic loss at the center of the melodically sumptuous "Baby Blue." Dennis Diken (of Smithereens fame) covers the wistful Baroque pop track "Dennis." Legendary singer Melanie is featured on a sorrowful "Without You." Power pop hero Ken Sharp conjures up the spirit of Badfinger via his outstanding take on "Just A Chance." Indeed, there are so many strong versions of Ham's sterling songs showcased across this essential collection. Information: ytmusiconline.com.

Artist:
Melanie
Title: The Magic Bus (Y&T Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Melanie, Joan Baez, late '60s and early '70s folk
Tell me more: The last several years have seen a number of rediscovered lost and rare recordings from legendary artist reissued for today's discerning listeners. Add to that list The Magic Bus, a live radio show captured in April 1971 featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Melanie. The audio CD release features the complete radio program showcasing the acclaimed New York songstress interviewed by the late Curtis Schwartz at WBUS in Miami, Florida; the restored and remastered program also features Melanie's performance of 10 songs during her appearance. Accompanied by her own acoustic guitar, Melanie performs moving versions of the lovely "Poet," tender "Six String," driving "Center of the Circle," bluesy "Some Say I Got Devil" and other favorites. Information: ytmusiconline.com.

Artist:
Victoria Hallman
Title: From Birmingham to Bakersfield (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Buck Owens, Susan Raye, Juice Newton
Tell me more: Omnivore Recordings continues its ongoing campaign of restoring and reissuing true sonic treasures. Singer Victoria Hallman is featured on From Birmingham to Bakersfield, a lost Buck Owens-produced album from 1982 featuring the promising singer who began her singing career at age four and was featured as a part of Owens' celebrated touring band. The never-released album will appeal to fans of '70s and '80s country music with Hallman's soprano a perfect fit with the infectious country-pop material featured across the disc. The track listing is mostly uptempo and buoyant, with "You're My Favorite Song," "Bottle Up My Tears," "Please Please Me" and "24 Hour Woman" among the shining tracks on the collection. Bonus tracks include several demos from 1980 (including an infectious version of Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried"). Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

New Music: Soundtracks aplenty, Sigur Rós, Rufus Wainwright, Terry Adams & Steve Ferguson, Young the Giant

A long awaited return from Iceland's Sigur Rós, a folk music detour from Rufus Wainwright and fantastic reissue featuring Terry Adams & Steve Ferguson are all available now.

Artist:
Sigur Rós
Title: ÁTTA (BMG Rights Management)
You might like if you enjoy: Sigur Rós, Moby, Howard Shore's "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks, Cocteau Twins
Tell me more: Iceland's beloved Sigur Rós is back with their first new studio album in a decade (2013's Kveikur) thanks to the surprise release of the 10-track ÁTTA on June 16. The cinematic and sweeping Neo classical approach of Sigur Rós plays out over ÁTTA's more than 55 minutes; the sumptuous selections feature singer-guitarist Jónsi, bassist Georg Hólm and multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson (the latter had left Sigur Rós in 2012 but rejoined the group last year). Because Jónsi's astonishing falsetto vocals are sung in Icelandic and non-linguistic vocalizations (the latter dubbed "Vonlenska" by the band), a good approach is to listen to the singular sound of Sigur Rós like a classical symphony with choir. The ambient "Blóðberg," lavish "Skel," ambitious "Klettur," poignant "Mór" and soaring 10-minute closer "8" are among the amazing tracks on the modern-day masterwork. ÁTTA is now available digitally, and will be released via audio CD and vinyl on Sept. 1, 2023. Information: sigurros.com.

Artist:
Rufus Wainwright
Title: Folkocracy (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: Rufus Wainwright, Brandi Carlile, Susanna Hoffs, Van Dyke Parks
Tell me more: On his latest album (Folkocracy), singer Rufus Wainwright delivers a full disc of shining traditional folk classics worthy of rediscovery. With a distinguished line of guests to bring additional warmth and power to the covers, this is a terrific listen that captivates across its 15-track run. Wainwright's incredible voice dazzles on each and every selection including the gentle opener "Alone" (featuring Madison Cunningham), on a poignant take on Neil Young's "Harvest" (featuring Andrew Bird and Chris Stills), a bewitching recording of "High on a Rocky Ledge (with David Byrne) and beaming version of the Peggy Seeger standard "Heading For Home" where John Legend and Wainwright share lead vocals. Among the other stellar tracks on the collection are a version of The Mama and The Papas song "Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)" which is ornately covered by Wainwright, Susanna Hoffs, Chris Stills and Sheryl Crow; a duet with Brandi Carlile ("Down In The Willow Garden") is an especially poignant musical reading of the murder of a young woman with the two singers voices blending in artful perfection. Other guests featured on the Mitchell Froom-produced album include Chaka Khan, Van Dyke Parks, ANOHNI and Nicole Scherzinger. Information: rufuswainwright.com.

Artist:
Terry Adams & Steve Ferguson
Title: Louisville Sluggers (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: NRBQ, The Jayhawks, Terry Adams
Tell me more: Digitally remastered and expanded with four previously unissued bonus tracks, the reissue of Terry Adams and Steve Ferguson's 2006 release Louisville Sluggers is a welcome opportunity to rediscover this outstanding collaboration. Long-time friends who had met in 1965, Adams and Ferguson went on to perform together as charter members with NRBQ and record several Columbia Records titles together before Ferguson left the groundbreaking group. Always friends, they reunited to record this eclectic album in 2006. The depth of far-flung material ranges from the jazzy instrumental opener "Peanut Vendor," Ferguson-penned Southern-fried rockers "Outer Space Boogie" and lovely "Same Train" to the genre-defying "Ichabod," New Orleans-flavored R&B sortie "Knucklehead" (the latter really showcasing Adams' incredible piano skills), and fun arrangements of "Turkey In The Straw" and "Blue Monk" showcasing the tandem-aimed virtuoso skills of Adams and Ferguson. Sadly this reissue also serves as a celebration of Ferguson; the acclaimed singer-guitarist died of cancer at the age of 60 on Oct. 7, 2009. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Media Release: Power Pop Icon Matthew Sweet leads a cast of All-Stars and Legends on a Trip to Revisit The Beatles’ “ABBEY ROAD!”

Power Pop Icon MATTHEW SWEET Leads A Cast Of All-Stars And Legends On A Trip To Revisit THE BEATLES’ “ABBEY ROAD!”

Album features performances by Jellyfish's Roger Joseph Manning Jr., Vulfpeck's Charles Jones, British guitar legend Snowy White, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens, GnR cohort Ron Bumblefoot Thal, Paul Shafer, God Of Hellfire Arthur Brown and lots more!

Los Angeles, CA - It probably comes as no surprise that Athens GA indie rock icon Matthew Sweet has a fondness for The Beatles. From his 1986 debut album to his early ‘90s breakthrough, including the MTV smash hit “Girlfriend,” on through to his most recent albums, Sweet has pulled off the same kind of melodically driven, seemingly straightforward but stealthily complex songs that turned the Liverpudlian foursome into a worldwide phenomena and one of the most influential artists of all-time. Recently, Sweet was invited to participate in a truly remarkable revisitation of The Beatles’ incredible crowning glory, the brilliant Abbey Road, and the results couldn’t be more satisfying.

Sweet sings, plays guitar and even adds a little bass to a brand new version of Abbey Road’s punchiest blast of rock psychedelia, “Polythene Pam.” The fourth segment of the album’s magnificent Side B medley, “Pam” is the perfect showcase for Sweet’s deft interplay of rapid fire vocals and powerfully overdriven guitars. Assisting in the track’s creation is fellow singer/guitarist Jason Berk, who adds texture with his acoustic guitar, and Fernando Perdomo who supports Sweet’s guitar with some tasteful Hammond organ. Perhaps the only thing that can be said against the track is that, with a running time of 1:27, it leaves too soon. But then, that’s what the repeat button is for!

Abbey Road Reimagined, produced by Perdomo and packed with an astounding array of musical all-stars, will be hitting the digital and physical shelves on August 18, 2023. Order your copy today!

FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE WEEKS

BROOKLYN, NY - Samantha Fish is pleased to announce the upcoming Love Letters tour – a cross-country solo run inspired by the introspective Love Letters Documentary, first broadcast on PBS in May. The tour kicks off on September 12, 2023 in Solana Beach and will find Samantha performing songs from her entire catalog. Tapped by Eric Clapton himself, Fish will be a featured performer on Clapton’s Crossroads tour in Los Angeles on September 23 & 24. "I am so honored to have been invited to participate in his tour; the talent is astounding and awe-inspiring," declared Fish. Not one to be pigeonholed as a female guitarist, Samantha's guitarwork has gotten her recognized as one of the most outstanding guitarists in the world, and rightfully so.

As an award-winning artist, singer/songwriter/guitarist Samantha Fish has brought extraordinary power to her self-expression, capturing her inner world in combustible riffs, visceral rhythms, and spine-tingling vocal work. Samantha's latest effort, Death Wish Blues, is a collaboration with Outlaw Country badass Jesse Dayton. The album has been #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart for three consecutive weeks. The album, written by Samantha and Jesse, showcases the pair's apparent chemistry and gritty vitality. The duo have been touring domestically and abroad since December 2022 and will be supporting the Steve Miller Band on a string of dates this Fall following the Love Letters tour.

Before Death Wish Blues, Samantha joined forces with producer Martin Kierszenbaum (Lady Gaga, Sting) for 2021's Faster L.P. The pair uncovered new possibilities in Samantha's captivating sound, revealing her affinity for North Mississippi blues heroes like R.L. Burnside and wildly inventive iconoclasts like Prince. The album's embodied unbridled energy is true to its emotional core. "The whole record has a theme of taking charge and taking the reins in a relationship or life in general," says Fish. "I thought that after 2020 I'd end up with a dismal, bleak album, but instead, we came up with something fun and sexy, and empowering." Faster followed her 2019 Rounder Records debut, Kill or Be Kind, produced by Grammy winner Scott Billington.

Known first and foremost for her fretwork, Fish's secret weapon is her astute and nuanced storytelling and ultra-vivid detail from carefully honing her craft. "Because I tour so much, most of my albums have been written in hotels between shows," she says. "This was the first time I've ever had the opportunity to just sit in one place and pour everything that was happening around me into songs." Growing up in Missouri, Fish first found her love of songwriting in her late teens, mining inspiration from Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. She took up the guitar at age 15 and began seeking gigs by cold-calling countless local bars. "I used to open the phone book and call up every place in Kansas City, even if they didn't have live shows," she remembers. "I had maybe a three percent success rate, but eventually, I started filling up my calendar—if you put on a good enough show, word of mouth gets around." Over the years, Fish has maintained her reputation as a phenomenal live act and repeatedly turned out critically acclaimed albums, earning an ever-growing number of accolades.

For Fish, one of the greatest joys of making music is the robust exchange of energy at her incendiary live shows. "I fell in love with music from going to shows, and I know how cathartic it can be. It heals your heart," she says. "Anytime I play live, I just want to make people forget about everything else in the world and feel that same joy that I feel on stage." And in the studio, Fish experiences a similar exhilaration—a sustained head rush that's entirely palpable in every track she records. "There's such a transformation that can happen in the studio when you own that freedom to be creative," she says. "I feel so charged up in those moments like I can be whoever I want to be. It's just me and these incredible musicians trying to make a piece of art that speaks for itself and contributes something new to the world. It's never hard to feel inspired or empowered when that's the mission."

Round Hill Records has announced that the GRAMMY® Award-nominated trio The Record Company will release their first new single “Talk To Me” on June 23rd while continuing to tour throughout the U.S.

With this new offering, band members Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals, harmonica), Alex Stiff (bass, backing vocals), and Marc Cazorla (drums, backing vocals) are kicking off their next musical era with a single that features guitar cries through a hypnotically hummable bassline and head-nodding beat. A common theme on this record was keeping the sound raw and getting back to basics.

“With ‘Talk To Me,’ we used the same junky yard sale drum set heard on our earliest recordings. When the question came up later whether to re-record the song in a more professional studio setting, we voted that the original spirit was more important than polish, and we left that groove intact. A lot of the album follows this same vision,” said bassist Alex Stiff. Set to a thick 60s Hofner bass and Motown inspired drum groove, "Talk To Me" explores the unfinished business of a love lost, or an addiction that’s still knocking on the front door. The Record Company finds some of that unrehearsed, live sound and hot-off-the-paper vocals seen on many of their earliest recordings.

The Record Company has experienced everything as a family since they formed in 2011 and garnered recognition with their 2016 debut, Give It Back To You. The release earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best Contemporary Blues Album” and spawned “Off The Ground,” a #1 single at AAA Radio that has tallied nearly 40 million total streams and counting. The band then went on an extensive tour with John Mayer, before headlining across the country and accruing a cadre of fans. Prior albums from The Record Company include All Of This Life (2018) and Play Loud(2021).

Now in 2023, a new chapter has begun.  The trio were in the studio working on a new album in late December 2022 when they received a call from their then record label saying that they were being dropped just days before Christmas. Proving their resilience and taking rejection as a rite of renewal led the band down a new path, creating the raw, self-produced, blues-based music that harkens back to their roots.

These “roots” would include half-working dumpster guitars, no-name drum sets from garage sales, no click tracks or studio tricks, all recorded in the bass player’s living room. “Almost every band you love at some point tends to drift away from that raw spark that made them unique in the first place,” says drummer Marc Cazorla. “They search for bigger sounds, bigger budgets, more expensive instruments, producers, mixers, etc. We’ve been subject to that as well, but now we’ve come back full circle to what matters most: making raw, honest music that moves peoples’ souls.”

The Record Company signed to Round Hill Records earlier this year and are managed by Jeff Castelez and his Cast Management team with UTA (Scott Clayton and Buster Phillips) representing the band for touring. They are set to tour throughout the year with plans to release a new album in the fall of 2023.

New music: Cowboy Junkies, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Jenny Lewis

Three veteran artists are back with wonderful returns.

Artist:
Cowboy Junkies
Title: Such Ferocious Beauty (Cooking Vinyl)
You might like if you enjoy: Cowboy Junkies, Mazzy Star
Tell me more: Loss. Love. Aging and mortality. Those weighty themes — and others  are addressed with otherworldly beauty and poetic candor on Cowboy Junkies' latest album Such Ferocious Beauty. The Canadian indie rock heroes' music has always demanded that listeners immerse themselves in the group's sumptuous sound and introspective songcraft. That holds true across the masterful 10-track Such Ferocious Beauty. The disc features nuggets aplenty; the rootsy "What I Lost," experimental psychedelic-tinged "Flood" and sparse Americana offering "Circe and Penelope" are among early standouts on the album. The mood-swept "Shadows 2," hypnotic "Knives," Baroque roots foray "Mike Tyson (Here It Comes)" and poignant "Blue Skies" are late album highlights. Information: CowboyJunkies.com.

Artist:
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Title: Mindsets (Blackheart Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Billy Idol, The Runaways
Tell me more: Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are back! On the new six-song EP Mindsets (released via Blackheart Records on June 2) the spirit and sonic firepower of the groundbreaking troupe's late '70s/early '80s melody-styled punk rock is fully on display. The original material — written by Blackhearts lead guitarist Dougie Needles and Jett — is full of the brash attitude of Jett's classic work (notably "Bad Reputation," "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"). The infectious opener "If You're Blue," countrified foray "Whiskey Goes Good," fiery "Before The Dawn," tuneful sing-along "Rear View Mirror" and other new cuts collectively celebrate Jett's winning past as well as her continuing contributions to modern rock. The EP was produced by Jett, Kenny Laguna and Thom Panunzio. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform on a strong bill with Bryan Adams at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert on Friday, July 28, 2023. Information: joanjett.com.

Artist:
Jenny Lewis
Title: Joy'All (Blue Note)
You might like if you enjoy: Jenny Lewis, The Postal Service, Rilo Kiley, Aimee Mann
Tell me more: Joy'All finds acclaimed singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis delivering a dazzling set of enticing songs that are breezy on their surface yet reveal insights into life in the here and now with her characteristically-sharp wit. The selections across Lewis' 5th solo album — produced by Dave Cobb at Nashville's celebrated RCA Studio A  are positioned in an inviting sonic sphere where pop, 1990s R&B and indie country somehow meet. The infectious dance-minded single "Psychos," tuneful country-mining "Puppy And A Truck" and "Apples and Oranges," pop-fused "Love Feel," tender "Balcony," confessional "Essence Of Life" and genre-blending "Chain Of Tears" are all first-rate songs on the wonderful disc. Information: JennyLewis.com.
