Hosted once again by Kristen and Stephen Stills, and promoted by Nederlander Concerts, the event will feature performances by autistic musical artists including The Spectrum Bluegrass Band and Abbey Romeo, and will begin at 7:00 PM PST. ​​The Light Up the Blues Concert, presented by the Indianapolis Colts, returns for its seventh year and will celebrate Autism Speaks’ 20th anniversary and the autism community, while helping to fuel Autism Speaks’ work to provide resources and services for all autistic individuals, across the spectrum and throughout their lifespan. Tell me more: Iceland's beloved Sigur Rós is back with their first new studio album in a decade (2013's Kveikur) thanks to the surprise release of the 10-track ÁTTA on June 16. The cinematic and sweeping Neo classical approach of Sigur Rós plays out over ÁTTA's more than 55 minutes; the sumptuous selections feature singer-guitarist Jónsi, bassist Georg Hólm and multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson (the latter had left Sigur Rós in 2012 but rejoined the group last year). Because Jónsi's astonishing falsetto vocals are sung in Icelandic and non-linguistic vocalizations (the latter dubbed "Vonlenska" by the band), a good approach is to listen to the singular sound of Sigur Rós like a classical symphony with choir. Tell me more: On his latest album (Folkocracy), singer Rufus Wainwright delivers a full disc of shining traditional folk classics worthy of rediscovery. With a distinguished line of guests to bring additional warmth and power to the covers, this is a terrific listen that captivates across its 15-track run. Wainwright's incredible voice dazzles on each and every selection including the gentle opener "Alone" (featuring Madison Cunningham), on a poignant take on Neil Young's "Harvest" (featuring Andrew Bird and Chris Stills), a bewitching recording of "High on a Rocky Ledge (with David Byrne) and beaming version of the Peggy Seeger standard "Heading For Home" where John Legend and Wainwright share lead vocals. Among the other stellar tracks on the collection are a version of The Mama and The Papas song "Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)" which is ornately covered by Wainwright, Susanna Hoffs, Chris Stills and Sheryl Crow; a duet with Brandi Carlile ("Down In The Willow Garden") is an especially poignant musical reading of the murder of a young woman with the two singers voices blending in artful perfection. Tell me more: Digitally remastered and expanded with four previously unissued bonus tracks, the reissue of Terry Adams and Steve Ferguson's 2006 release Louisville Sluggers is a welcome opportunity to rediscover this outstanding collaboration. Long-time friends who had met in 1965, Adams and Ferguson went on to perform together as charter members with NRBQ and record several Columbia Records titles together before Ferguson left the groundbreaking group. Always friends, they reunited to record this eclectic album in 2006. The depth of far-flung material ranges from the jazzy instrumental opener "Peanut Vendor," Ferguson-penned Southern-fried rockers "Outer Space Boogie" and lovely "Same Train" to the genre-defying "Ichabod," New Orleans-flavored R&B sortie "Knucklehead" (the latter really showcasing Adams' incredible piano skills), and fun arrangements of "Turkey In The Straw" and "Blue Monk" showcasing the tandem-aimed virtuoso skills of Adams and Ferguson. August 6, 2021—Queens of The Summer Hotel, the new album from Aimee Mann, is set for release on November 5 via her own SuperEgo Records. Mann started developing the new music in 2018 when she agreed to write songs for a stage adaptation of Girl, Interrupted, Susannah Kaysen’s memoir about her psychiatric hospitalization in the late 1960s. It was material that Mann understood well, having had her own struggles with mental illness. The resulting music comes together in Queens of The Summer Hotel.

The album consists of a song cycle constructed from music that Mann wrote for the show, sung by Mann and orchestrated with her longtime collaborator Paul Bryan, using strings and woodwinds in a nod to the project’s theatrical origins.

In celebration of the forthcoming record, Mann is debuting the lead single, “Suicide Is Murder,” today alongside an accompanying music video starring James Urbaniak, and directed and produced by Puloma Basu and Rob Hatch-Miller. Listen to/share the track HERE and watch/share the video HERE.

“I started to write this song because I’ve known people who committed suicide and friends who’ve had loved ones die from suicide,” Mann notes. “I think the phrase ‘suicide is murder’ took on a meaning for me as it’s the worst thing to have to deal with in the aftermath. It’s just terrible. Because every person who knows the person who committed suicide will blame themselves in some way for not noticing or stepping in or doing something. They’ll till the end of their days, say, ‘was there something I could have done?’”

In many ways, Queens of The Summer Hotel is the unintentional part two to Mann’s 2017’s Grammy-winning album Mental Illness—both exploring themes of self-harm, depression and suicide. However, Queens of The Summer Hotelwas written more quickly than any of Mann’s previous records. The assignment to write songs for someone else’s project offered Mann a sense of liberation, freeing her to enter another person’s consciousness and story—and a brand-new set of musical structures—through the lens of Kaysen’s own alienation. Although several different characters narrate the songs, they’re not strictly tied to any narrative. But together, they form a portrait of one woman’s crisis of disassociation as seen through another woman’s eyes. 

“I honestly felt almost possessed when I was writing this record as I’ve never written so fast and intensely,” recalls Mann. “I found the material very interesting and obviously really personal. I had specific ideas about what I thought the character’s backstory could be and incorporated a lot of shared experiences to flesh out specific characters discussed in the memoir.”

In addition, Mann has confirmed a run of select West Coast tour dates with Rufus Wainwright this fall. Kicking off on September 9, the shows include performances at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre, San Diego’s Humphrey’s and Saratoga’s Mountain Winery. See below for complete tour details.

After several albums with ’Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. Along the way, Mann forged a powerful new sound driven by her distinctive singing style—stripped-down, folky, acoustic but also forceful and cerebral, exploring psychological themes with dark wit and an eye for the world’s ugliest power plays. 

In 2017, Mann released her acclaimed album Mental Illness, which won Best Folk Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards. The New York Times proclaimed, “Mental Illness wallows in its troubles, and it’s an exquisite wallow,” while The Los Angeles Times declared “Every doomed syllable is sacred and every tragic rhyme fits, as though each song were a puzzle to which only Mann knows the solution.”

In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with “Save Me” landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song. Mann has also made numerous cameo appearances in films such as The Big Lebowski and TV shows like “Portlandia” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” in which she sang an indelible cover of The Cars’ song “Drive.” Other extracurricular activities include performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House and starting a Podcast with Ted Leo called “The Art of Process.”

The BeachLife Festival has been rescheduled until May 21-23, 2021, but the Redondo Beach, California event organizers has embraced the "new normal" of live streaming with a super cool lineup for July 23, 2020. Mary Chapin Carpenter released her wonderful new single "Secret Keepers" yesterday and you can hear it here. The track is the latest gem unveiled from her highly-anticipated new album The Dirt And The Stars set for release on Aug. 7, 2020 on Lambent Light Records via Thirty Tigers (pre-order).

Of the single, Carpenter notes: "'Secret Keepers' is about holding onto things that feel too dangerous to let go of, too perilous to share, too complex to shine a light upon. This week saw the release of several notable albums, including new full-length efforts from My Morning Jacket and Rufus Wainwright.

Officially announced earlier in the week, My Morning Jacket have released their new record, The Waterfall II, an unforeseen and timely continuation of a psychic and sonic journey begun long ago. The album was massively inspired by the band’s idyllic surroundings in Stinson Beach, CA — and a sense of charmed isolation that frontman Jim James likened to “living on our own little moon.” There, the Kentucky-bred five-piece ended up creating over two dozen songs at the mountaintop studio known as Panoramic House. Though they flirted with the idea of putting out what would have been a triple album, the band ultimately decided that less would be more at the time and divided the project into two halves, releasing the first segment as The Waterfall: a 2015 full-length that earned the band their third consecutive Best Alternative Rock Album Grammy Award nomination in a row (Evil Urges, Circuital, The Waterfall). The Waterfall II will be released on CD and vinyl on August 28. Pre-orders, including both standard and deluxe versions featuring 180-gram vinyl with Zoetrope labels in a gatefold foil jacket, are available now.

As James reveals, the decision to unearth The Waterfall II was sparked from a bit of serendipity in the early days of self-quarantine. While out on a walk, he placed his music library on shuffle and soon stumbled upon “Spinning My Wheels,” a tender rumination on the struggle for presence, its lyrics confessing to feeling “hypnotized from doing the same old thing.” Struck by the song’s enduring relevance, James revisited the other tracks reserved from the Panoramic House sessions and found that they invited a welcome moment of self-reflection—an outcome perhaps even more perfectly suited to the chaos of the current day than the circumstances of their recording.

Like its predecessor, The Waterfall II mines its mood of dreamy contemplation from certain heartbreak James had recently experienced, including the demise of a monumental relationship. Unfolding in a loosely threaded narrative of loss and recovery, the album conjures an indelible pain but never drifts into despair, gracefully conveying James’s message that “there is hope beyond the pain and loss, if you learn to flow with life like water.”

Even in its most heavy-hearted moments, The Waterfall II radiates an undeniable sense of wonder, a testament to the wild-mindedness that’s long imbued the music of My Morning Jacket. With their unabashed curiosity infinitely stirred by their time at Stinson Beach, the band hopes that the album might lead others to look beyond what’s human-made in the search for solace and renewal. “As so many of us feel out of tune and long for the world to be a better place, we have to look to nature and the animals and learn from them: learn to love, accept, move on, and respect each other,” says James. “We gotta work for it and change our ways before it’s too late, and get in harmony with love and equality for all of humanity and for nature too.”

My Morning Jacket will perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday July 15.

Inspired by middle age, married life, fatherhood, friends, loss, London, and Laurel Canyon, songs like “Only The People That Love” and the spirited, symphonic “Hatred” find the gifted singer-songwriter ready to tackle new challenges, yet compelled to confront his past by making sense of how he has grown both as a musician and the contented family man he has become.
