New music: The Album Leaf, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Stephen Stills

A terrific return from San Diego-based The Album Leaf as well as the release of long-lost recordings featuring Blood, Sweat & Tears and Stephen Stills will be welcome additions to any music lover's library...

Artist:
The Album Leaf
Title: Future Falling (Eastern Glow Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Bat for Lashes, Tycho
Tell me more: Electronic artist The Album Leaf is back with Future Falling, his first album since 2016's masterful Between Waves (not including a number of film scores and re-issues spearheaded by Jimmy LaValle during that period). The ambitious Future Falling features 10 immersive tracks that will appeal to fans of chillwave, ambient and downtempo electronica music. The feeling of listening to several tracks — notably the openers "Prologue" and "Dust Collects" and poignant closer "Epilogue" — is one of loss, grief and mortality. The aptly-titled "Stride" is a more uptempo track that expands the reach of the mostly-instrumental record. The luxurious and absolutely gorgeous track "Afterglow" features guest vocalist Kimbra; later Bat for Lashes makes an equally strong vocal contribution via the otherworldly "Near." A North American headlining tour featuring The Album Leaf in support of the new album will launch on May 13 in San Diego. Information: TheAlbumLeaf.com.

Artist:
Blood, Sweat & Tears
Title: What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears? (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Blood, Sweat & Tears, early Chicago, classic rock
Tell me more: The first American band to perform behind the Iron Curtain, Blood, Sweat & Tears performed a string of dates in Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland in June and July 1970. Many of the concerts were recorded using a portable 8-track machine; an American film crew filmed the shows for a planned documentary as well. However, the film company that financed the project closed its doors during post-production and members of BS&T didn't know how to to retrieve the materials. Fast forward 50 years and director John Scheinfeld and a tenacious team tracked down many of the recordings for the newly-released 2023 documentary "What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?" and accompanying 10-track soundtrack. The depth and diversity of the troupe's material (encompassing rock, jazz, R&B, classical and more) shines across the soundtrack, with the fiery opener "Something's Coming On," soulful "God Bless The Child," dazzling "Spinning Wheel" and blues blaster "Something' Goin' On/Blues - Part II" among the early standouts; a bluesy "And When I Die," symphonic "Sometimes In Winter," the romantic "You've Made Me So Very Happy" (bolstered by David Clayton-Thomas' top-tier vocals) and powerful closer "I Can't Quit Her" entice on the second half of the collection. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
Stephen Stills
Title: Live at Berkeley 1971 (Iconic Artists Group / Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Buffalo Springfield, Manassas
Tell me more: Following the release of his second solo album in June 1971, Stephen Stills embarked on his first solo tour. During that "The Memphis Horns Tour" Stills would open each night with a solo-acoustic set, and then close with an electric one. Now more than 50 years after completing that historic trek, a 14-track collection of previously unreleased performances captured over two nights at the Berkeley Community Theater on Aug. 20 and 21, 1971 has been released shining a well-deserved spotlight on the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. The marvelous title features inspired performances of a myriad of the singer-songwriter/guitar great's songs. The Dallas, Texas native kicks it off with a freewheeling take on "Love The One You're With." The acoustic-flavored "Do For The Others" and "Jesus Gave Love Away For Free," shimmering harmonies-rich "You Don't Have to Cry" and "The Lee Shore" (the latter two tracks feature David Crosby sharing vocals with Stills) are early standouts on the set. A medley of "49 Bye-Byes/For What It's Worth" (featuring Stills on piano), the blues-centered "Know You've Got To Run," horn section-anchored R&B gems "Lean On Me" and "Ecology Song" shine on the second half of the live album. The original recording was produced by Stills and recorded by Bill Halverson; the new reissue was produced by Kevin McCormick and Stills. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Sights and Sounds: Neil Young, Queen, Bruce Springsteen

While I was on a hiking trip in Utah this week there was a number of major music news headlines. Here is a recap of some of the biggest announcements...Robert Kinsler

Neil Young's 'Harvest' to be reissued as a 50th anniversary edition on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022 via Reprise Records

Neil Young's best known album, 1972's Harvest, will be reissued in a 40th anniversary edition on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022 via Reprise Records.  Harvest was Young's third solo album and reached number 1 in many nations; the enduring album features the hit single "Heart of Gold" as well as classics including "Old Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done" and "Alabama." Among the artists who contributed to the proceedings on Harvest were Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, James Taylor and David Crosby.

The 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Box sets will be released on vinyl and audio CD. The box sets include the original album released in February 1972, three outtakes from the Harvest sessions, two DVDs and a hard bound book tat includes 40 photographs (as well as liner notes by Joel Bernstein).

Both the vinyl box set and the CD format will include Young's oft-bootlegged Feb. 23, 1971 BBC In Concert performance (a version of "Heart of Gold" from that show is out now, and the previously-unreleased two-hour documentary Harvest Time. Watch the video performance of "Heart of Gold" HERE.

Queen's 'The Miracle Collector's Edition' to be released on Nov. 18, 2022. Listen to the rediscovered gem "Face It Alone" featuring the late Freddie Mercury

On Nov. 18, 2022, Queen will release The Miracle Collector's Edition, revisiting the band's 13th studio album The Miracle (originally released in May 1989).

In retrospect, the world is fortunate that the aptly-titled album was recorded. Indeed, after playing their biggest concert ever on Aug. 9, 1986, Queen took a hiatus from each other. The four members only reunited three years later to record The Miracle.

The recording of the album also played out around the same time as Mercury's positive HIV diagnosis being shared with the other band members (but not yet with the public).

The Miracle Collector's Edition will include a remastered LP version of the original album, along with a slew of bonus material including “original takes, demos and rough cuts, and six previously unreleased tracks – plus intimate fly-on-the-wall audio of the band at work in the studio.”

One of those previously unreleased tracks, “Face It Alone,” serves as a shining preview of the expanded title:

The track is the first new song featuring Mercury since 2014, when the band released Queen Forever, which included “Let Me in Your Heart Again,” “Love Kills” and “There Must Be More to Life Than This.”

A news release issued in connection with the forthcoming title provides more details about the enticing "Face It Alone":

Among its contents, the expanded set includes The Miracle Sessions: an hour-plus disc of further previously unreleased recordings, including six unpublished songs. Just as tantalising for fans, the audio includes the band’s candid spoken exchanges on the studio floor in London and Montreux, giving the most revealing window yet into the four members’ creative process and the joy, in-jokes and banter on their return to working together.

“Face It Alone” was originally recorded during the band’s historic 1988 sessions for that album, a prolific period which saw the band lay down around 30 tracks, many of which were never released, but remained among those that didn’t make the final album cut. It was rediscovered when the band’s production and archive team returned to those sessions to work on The Miracle box set reissue.

“We’d kind of forgotten about this track,” admits Roger Taylor, “but there it was, this little gem. It’s wonderful, a real discovery. It’s a very passionate piece.”

Adds Brian May:

“I’m happy that our team were able to find this track. After all these years, it’s great to hear all four of us … yes, Deacy is there too … working in the studio on a great song idea which never quite got completed … until now!”

Bruce Springsteen releases video for advance track 'Nightshift' from forthcoming album 'Only The Strong Survive' coming Nov. 11, 2022

Check out the latest official music video from Bruce Springsteen; the song "Nightshift" will be featured on his forthcoming album Only The Strong Survive due on Nov. 11, 2022.

Far-flung song craft abounds on new titles

A diverse and far-flung approach to song craft is showcased across four new releases available now.

Artist: Rob Laufer
Title: The Floating World (independent)
You might like if you enjoy: Andrew Gold, Crowded House, George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass"
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Rob Laufer can be forgiven for not having released a full-length album in nine years leading up to his new masterwork The Floating World. An acclaimed producer, musical sideman and songwriter-for-hire, his list of bona fide credits includes working with the illustrious likes of Sir George Martin, Johnny Cash, Cheap Trick, Shawn Colvin and Fiona Apple. Additionally, Laufer serves as music director and band leader for the fabled Wild Honey Orchestra tribute concerts, an on-going Los Angeles-benefit series (this year's tribute to the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society album included members of The Cars, R.E.M., Blur and Pugwash). The tracks enthrall across the aptly-titled "The Floating World" including the dreamy "Avalanche," luxurious "Highway Machine," magnificent Beatlesque "Floating World," baroque pop ballad "Fence" and inspired "This River."  An breathtaking album that resonates more with each listen. Information: www.roblaufermusic.com/.

Artist: Pete Yorn
Title: Caretakers (Shelly Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Jason Falkner, Beck, Big Star
Tell me more: Across Pete Yorn's wonderful new album Caretakers it's clear that the acclaimed singer-songwriter's considerable artistry is on display at every turn. On Yorn's seventh solo full-length effort there are quiet moments of reflection ("Caretakers," "Friends," "Do You Want to Love Again?"),  wistful celebration (the folk rocker "I Wanna Be The One," the infectious "POV") and a determined quest to translate this crazy thing we call life into song (the dreamy "Calm Down," the shimmering "Can't Stop You," "Opal") that add up to an outstanding return from Yorn. Information: www.PeteYorn.com.

Artist: Cherie Currie & Brie Darling
Title: The Motivator (Blue Elan Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joan Jett, Fanny, The Runaways
Tell me more: Cherie Currie and Brie Darling have voices that blend magically across their new full-length collaboration The Motivator. Currie (front woman of the Runaways) and Darling (singer-drummer of Fanny) have unveiled a joyful tribute to many of the songs and artists who influenced them, and in the process sound as if they are having a blast. In addition to three newly-penned originals (including the infectious "This Is Our Time" and confessional blues rocker "Too Bruised"), the disc is filled with artful covers of classics from some of the most groundbreaking artists of the late 1960s and early '70s. The selection of material was likely focused on the strength of songs but it's amazing how powerfully the cuts' lyrics resonate with the world events of 2019. This writer's favorite tracks on the LP include the duo's version of the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter," John Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth," The Youngbloods' "Get Together," Stephen Stills' stellar "For What It's Worth," and a particularly effective amped-up take on Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." Information: blueelan.com.

Artist: Arielle Paul
Title: Burn (Mad Monkey Records)
You might like if you enjoy: First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis, Grace Potter
Tell me more: It's not easy to blend Americana and pop convincingly but that's exactly what Los Angeles songstress Arielle Paul does on her new EP Burn. Across the disc's six solid tracks she proves to be a talented musical chameleon. The title track finds her providing a fresh coat of sonic paint to contemporary Americana; "This Way" and "Epically In Love" magically blend contemporary pop with authentic sweeps of psychedelia. The acoustic "Sometimes" is a confessional and beautiful foray, her emotive voice showcased amidst a soundscape that artfully builds from start to finish. The uptempo "Go" recalls some of the best work of Grace Potter, a rousing blend of rock, soul and R&B stylings. Information: AriellePaul.com.
