Tell me more: While Nils Lofgren is best known for his long-time role as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, Neil Young's enduring Crazy Horse as well as his role as one the early members of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band, his exceptional talents as a solo artist shine just as bright across his wonderful new album Mountains. Lofgren's otherworldly skills as singer, songwriter and guitar master are displayed via a far-flung track listing that includes him performing originals amidst blues, rock, soul and Americana soundscapes. Lofgren addresses a troubled world, as well as the magical grasp of love and deep human connections on the decidedly personal album. The cast of musical greats who contribute to Mountains' might is also notable; Ringo Starr provides his singular skills behind the drum kit on the winning opener "Ain't the Truth Enough," while he adds vocals on the transcendent "Angel Blues." The beautiful ballad "Back in Your Arms" is bolstered by wonderful backing vocals from the Howard Gospel Choir; Lofgren's signature vocals are particularly poignant here. The bluesy tribute to the late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts ("Won't Cry No More") is heartfelt and bewitching, Lofgren's voice blending magically with Cindy Mizelle's soprano and his own artful fret work. The countrified ballad "Nothin's Easy (For Amy)" is bolstered by guest Neil Young whose vocals blend powerfully with Lofgren's own. Tell me more: Syracuse, New York-based Power Pop Hall Of Fame outfit The Flashcubes are back with the aptly-titled Pop Masters (due Aug. 11 via audio CD and all streaming services courtesy of Big Stir Records). The quartet — whose 1977-1980 lineup is intact and features guitarists Paul Armstrong and Arty Lenin, bassist Gary Frenay and drummer Tommy Allen — released only two singles during their original run ("Christi Girl" and "Wait Til Next Week"). The band reunited in the 1990s and earned a growing following thanks to the release of new recordings and acclaim for their live performances. Fast forward to 2023 and Pop Masters fully rewards power pop lovers with a dozen great cuts; indeed the collection gathers a wide range of singles that have received airplay on the likes of "Little Steven's Underground Garage," WFMU, KXLU, and more. Standouts on Pop Masters include a rousing cover of the Pezband's tuneful rocker "Baby It's Cold Outside" with the song's original writer and singer Mimi Betinis sharing lead vocals, a sophisticated take on Pilot's 1977 track "Get Up And Go," a powerful musical reading of Shoes' "Tomorrow Night," and infectious takes on the Paley Brothers' "Come Out And Play" and Motors' "Forget About You." Late disc highlights include a euphoric take on Dwight Twilley's "Alone In My Room," shimmering version of Posies' "Flavor Of The Month" and an inspired performance of Sparks' "Nothing To Do." Title: Stories From A Rock n Roll Heart (Thirty Tigers)

Tell me more: Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart marks the first album from acclaimed Americana singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams since she suffered a debilitating stroke in November 2020, a challenging event that greatly impacted her ability to play guitar (her principal tool used to write songs). Williams, 70, is thankfully on the mend and was terrific when I caught her enticing set at the Pure Imagination Festival in Prescott, AZ in May, and her new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart certifies her top-tier talents as a songwriter and singer are fully intact. Williams— who produced her 15th studio album along with Tom Overby and Ray Kennedy — co-wrote the material here with Overby, Jesse Malin and Travis Stephens. Additionally, she is joined by a slew of famed artists who provide backing vocals across the 10-track collection. The songs here often chronicle the aftermath of her stroke; just listen to the countrified confessional "Jukebox" where she sings: "These days my world seems so small / I'm a prisoner inside these four walls / Going Crazy with the sound of my own voice / Going crazy if I don't get out of this house." On "New York Comeback" — where her own terrific vocals are bolstered by the backing vocals of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa — she genuinely conjures up the magic of returning to the stage: "Let me have the final say / One last chance to do it my way / One last shot, one last swing / One final song to sing." Among the other outstanding tracks on the disc are the joyful roots rocker "Let's Get the Band Back Together," the yearning "Last Call for the Truth," rollicking "Rock n Roll Heart," haunting "Hum's Liquor" and lovely "Where the Song Will Find Me," the latter a poignant exploration of the singer's mission to embrace her life's work of writing and recording new music. The album's closer is the defiant "Never Gonna Fade Away," where Williams promises: "I'm not gonna fade away / I'm never gonna fade away" — the song's emotional close is an invitation for discerning listeners to reflect and then hit "repeat" to play Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart again. Tell me more: Electronic artist The Album Leaf is back with Future Falling, his first album since 2016's masterful Between Waves (not including a number of film scores and re-issues spearheaded by Jimmy LaValle during that period). The ambitious Future Falling features 10 immersive tracks that will appeal to fans of chillwave, ambient and downtempo electronica music. The feeling of listening to several tracks — notably the openers "Prologue" and "Dust Collects" and poignant closer "Epilogue" — is one of loss, grief and mortality. The aptly-titled "Stride" is a more uptempo track that expands the reach of the mostly-instrumental record. The luxurious and absolutely gorgeous track "Afterglow" features guest vocalist Kimbra; later Bat for Lashes makes an equally strong vocal contribution via the otherworldly "Near." Title: What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears? (Omnivore Recordings)

Tell me more: The first American band to perform behind the Iron Curtain, Blood, Sweat & Tears performed a string of dates in Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland in June and July 1970. Many of the concerts were recorded using a portable 8-track machine; an American film crew filmed the shows for a planned documentary as well. However, the film company that financed the project closed its doors during post-production and members of BS&T didn't know how to to retrieve the materials. Fast forward 50 years and director John Scheinfeld and a tenacious team tracked down many of the recordings for the newly-released 2023 documentary "What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?" and accompanying 10-track soundtrack. The depth and diversity of the troupe's material (encompassing rock, jazz, R&B, classical and more) shines across the soundtrack, with the fiery opener "Something's Coming On," soulful "God Bless The Child," dazzling "Spinning Wheel" and blues blaster "Something' Goin' On/Blues - Part II" among the early standouts; a bluesy "And When I Die," symphonic "Sometimes In Winter," the romantic "You've Made Me So Very Happy" (bolstered by David Clayton-Thomas' top-tier vocals) and powerful closer "I Can't Quit Her" entice on the second half of the collection. Tell me more: Following the release of his second solo album in June 1971, Stephen Stills embarked on his first solo tour. During that "The Memphis Horns Tour" Stills would open each night with a solo-acoustic set, and then close with an electric one. Now more than 50 years after completing that historic trek, a 14-track collection of previously unreleased performances captured over two nights at the Berkeley Community Theater on Aug. 20 and 21, 1971 has been released shining a well-deserved spotlight on the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. The marvelous title features inspired performances of a myriad of the singer-songwriter/guitar great's songs. The Dallas, Texas native kicks it off with a freewheeling take on "Love The One You're With." The acoustic-flavored "Do For The Others" and "Jesus Gave Love Away For Free," shimmering harmonies-rich "You Don't Have to Cry" and "The Lee Shore" (the latter two tracks feature David Crosby sharing vocals with Stills) are early standouts on the set. A medley of "49 Bye-Byes/For What It's Worth" (featuring Stills on piano), the blues-centered "Know You've Got To Run," horn section-anchored R&B gems "Lean On Me" and "Ecology Song" shine on the second half of the live album. The album’s first single “Ain’t The Truth Enough,” featuring Ringo Starr on drums, was written in the wake of the January 6th insurrection and reckons with the ways that misinformation and demagoguery can tear families apart and silo us in our own realities. About the new single, Lofgren reflects: “One early desert morning, strong coffee in hand, I tuned my Martin D-35 acoustic gifted to me by the great James Caan (bless you Jimmy) to an open G and said ‘write’! Soon the title and main riff were coming through me… “ain’t the truth enough!” Lucky me! I felt I had to go deep and with the global war on women, and man’s deadly epidemic of lies and spin for money and power,  I imagined a fierce, loving mother and wife dealing with a husband recently home from the insurrection. (Cindy Mizelle added the woman’s voice with great soul and power here) I felt inspired and a day later this special song was done. Not mean spirited, all truth, harsh reality.”

“Ain’t No Truth Enough” features performances by Nils Lofrgren (lap steel, organ, vibraphone, vocals), Ringo Starr (drums), Kevin McCormick (bass) and Cindy Mizelle (harmony vocal).

Written and recorded at home in Scottsdale, AZ, the 10-song collection is lush and soulful, mixing rock and roll muscle with blues grit and gospel transcendence as it grapples with a world where pride and selfishness are treated as virtues and the power-hungry are rewarded for their greed and shortsightedness. The result is perhaps the most vulnerable and revealing work in Lofgren’s impressive 50-year catalog, an intuitive, empathetic reflection on truth, trust, and the power of human connection delivered with the help of an all-star cast of friends including Ringo Starr, Neil Young, Cindy Mizelle, the Howard Gospel Choir, Ron Carter and David Crosby.

“These songs are all born of raw emotion,” says Lofgren. “I gave myself permission to share my fear and my anger, my love and my hope, to be open about what I was experiencing without over analyzing or editing the life out of it.”

Traditionally, Lofgren’s commitment to songcraft made for a slow, deliberate process in the studio. Tracks would be written and rewritten, lyrics edited and revisited, recordings cut and then tossed aside. This time around, however, Lofgren set new rules for himself: write whatever you feel; share it no matter what. He began challenging himself to write every day, treating the process as an outlet not only for his frustration with the state of the world, but also for the joy and gratitude he felt to have so much time with his wife, Amy, who co-produced the record with him.

“The album started as a form of therapy,” he explains, “but it very quickly grew beyond that. It was so freeing to work without any restrictions, to just write whatever came out, and it turned into some of the most inspired work I think I’ve ever made.”

Concurrent with the release of Mountains, Nils will launch his Rockality video series. These 30–40 minute videos consist of Nils’ storytelling at its best, as he recounts the twists and turns of his path in the world of music. These are non-rehearsed, folksy deliveries of fascinating, colorful and entertaining stories that conclude with Nils singing a song or stretching out on his guitar. “As people seem to find my musical stories entertaining for the last half century, I thought we’d share some more with you,” says Lofgren. “From opening for Jimi Hendrix on my 19th birthday with Grin, knocking on Jimi’s trailer and getting to speak with him and thank him for inspiring me to be a professional rocker, back to my early high school drop-out, 17 year old runaway in Greenwich Village days, walking in on Neil Young and Crazy Horse in DC for advice on their first tour, which lead to recording the After The Gold Rush album at 18, I’ve had an eventful, topsy-turvy ride for 55 years now. Here’s hoping these stories may bring a smile to your face. The times were heavy and consequential. No internet, no cell phones, Vietnam war lottery, civil rights marches, Cuban missile crisis, assassinations. All during the greatest explosion of music in mankind’s history. And to boot, the greatest parents and brothers a soul could ask for, who kept a spiritual light burning, thank goodness, as I found myself on too many dark roads.”
