Los Angeles, CA - It probably comes as no surprise that Athens GA indie rock icon Matthew Sweet has a fondness for The Beatles. From his 1986 debut album to his early ‘90s breakthrough, including the MTV smash hit “Girlfriend,” on through to his most recent albums, Sweet has pulled off the same kind of melodically driven, seemingly straightforward but stealthily complex songs that turned the Liverpudlian foursome into a worldwide phenomena and one of the most influential artists of all-time. Recently, Sweet was invited to participate in a truly remarkable revisitation of The Beatles’ incredible crowning glory, the brilliant Abbey Road, and the results couldn’t be more satisfying.

Sweet sings, plays guitar and even adds a little bass to a brand new version of Abbey Road’s punchiest blast of rock psychedelia, “Polythene Pam.” The fourth segment of the album’s magnificent Side B medley, “Pam” is the perfect showcase for Sweet’s deft interplay of rapid fire vocals and powerfully overdriven guitars. Assisting in the track’s creation is fellow singer/guitarist Jason Berk, who adds texture with his acoustic guitar, and Fernando Perdomo who supports Sweet’s guitar with some tasteful Hammond organ. Perhaps the only thing that can be said against the track is that, with a running time of 1:27, it leaves too soon. But then, that’s what the repeat button is for!

Sights and Sounds: Hall & Oates, AXS TV's Stagecoach Coverage, Terry Reid

Here is a quick roundup of SoCal-focused music news...

The well-deserved resurgence of Daryl Hall & John Oates continues. The groundbreaking rock 'n' soul duo is now set to headline at Orange County's biggest concert venue, Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine on Sunday, October 30, 2015.

This will mark a dramatic leap forward for the duo, who last headlined a major venue behind the Orange Curtain in August 2013, when they performed at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa. AXS TV is unveiling its first glimpse at the artist lineup for the network’s broadcast of the 10^th Annual Stagecoach Country Music Festival, on Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26. The line-up includes some of the hottest bands on the circuit today such as ZZ Top, Dierks Bentley and Jake Owen. The festival will air each evening, starting at 9pE/6pP. This is the third consecutive year that AXS TV will broadcast the fan-favorite event, presenting 21 hours of coverage as the genre’s biggest stars take the stage at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. Additional artists will be added to AXS TV’s broadcast schedule closer to the event.

Over the last decade, Stagecoach has firmly established itself as California’s premier Country music festival, delivering a one-of-a-kind experience spanning decades of well-known classics and modern hits. AXS TV is giving viewers a front row seat to the action with seven hours of coverage kicking off on Friday, April 24, with a fully loaded lineup featuring radio kings Jake Owen (“Barefoot Blue Jean Night”) and Kip Moore (“Beer Money”); Western swing ensemble The Time Jumpers, featuring the legendary Vince Gill and Kenny Sears (“So Far Apart”); family four-piece Parmalee (“Carolina”); indie sensation Sturgill Simpson (“Just Let Go”); and Brooklyn outfit The Lone Bellow (“Then Came The Morning”).

Then, on Saturday, April 25, tune in for an A-list roster of established favorites and exciting up-and-comers featuring superstar hit maker Dierks Bentley (“Drunk On A Plane,” “I Hold On”); Nashville sensation Justin Moore (“Small Town USA”); classic rock icons ZZ Top (“Sharp Dressed Man,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’”); and Country quartet the Eli Young Band (“Even If It Breaks Your Heart”).

The channel closes out the weekend on Sunday, April 26, with unforgettable performances from beloved brother-sister trio The Band Perry (“If I Die Young,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely”); soulful songstress Sara Evans (“A Little Bit Stronger,” “Born to Fly”); Southern Rock heroes George Thorogood & the Destroyers (“Bad To The Bone”) and The Outlaws (“Green Grass & Tides”); and chart-topping newcomers Maddie & Tae (“Girl In A Country Song”).

In conjunction with AXS TV’s season of music festivals—opening with the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival on Friday, April 17—Stagecoach viewers will be able to access special festival-specific content on an all-new interactive microsite via www.axs.tv/festival/Stagecoach. Using a broadcast alert center, social media updates, in-depth blog posts, minute-by-minute broadcast lineups, and a social interaction page, viewers will be able to stay updated on breaking news from all of their favorite acts, ensuring they won’t miss a second of their most anticipated performances.

Terry Reid has influenced generations of singers and young bands such as Cheap Trick, Keith Richards, Jack White, The Black Crows and Aerosmith.  Rob Zombie was so struck by Terry's legend and music he included three of Reid's songs "Seed of Memory," "To Be Treated Rite," and "Brave Awakening," in The Devil's Rejects. When Reid's first band, The Jaywalkers were named as a support act for The Rolling Stones for their concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Graham Nash of The Hollies became friends with Reid at that concert and suggested The Jaywalkers sign up with Columbia Records.  Thus the start of serious rock and roll history! Reid came to the attention of legendary hit producer Mickie Most who produced "Bang Bang, You're Terry Reid," and "The Terry Reid Album," which had the hit "Superlungs My Supergirl."  That album also had the unforgettable classic "Stay With Me Baby", which not only stands the test of time today, but which the iconic Aretha Franklin commented "Two things are happening, London and Terry Reid." When The Yardbirds disbanded, Page wanted Reid to fill the vocalist spot for his proposed new group, the New Yardbirds (which was to become Led Zeppelin). Reid had already committed to go on the road with Cream (as an opening act on the 1968 US Tour). Reid suggested to Page that he consider a young Birmingham based singer, Robert Plant, instead.  Reid later was offered a position as a member of Deep Purple but he declined due to contractual agreements. In 1969, Reid supported British tours, notably Jethro Tull and Fleetwood Mac. Reid, Solley and Webb toured the United States again when he opened for The Rolling Stones on their 1969 American Tour. Reid eventually retired his solo career in 1981 to concentrate on session work, appearing on albums by Don Henley, Jackson Browne, UFO, High Stakes & Dangerous Men and Bonnie Raitt.  In the 1990s he also toured in the US and Hong Kong with ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor.  In late 2005, Reid returned to the UK for his first tour in years.
