Austin, TX—November 8, 2013— Austin City Limits (ACL) showcases British soul with a brand new episode featuring two uniquely original singer-songwriters—chart-topping Scottish songstress Emeli Sandé and UK sensation Michael Kiwanuka making their ACL debuts. Sandé performs hits from her breakthrough album Our Version of Events, while Kiwanuka plays tunes from his debut Home Again. The episode premieres November 9^th on PBS Stations. Sandé has achieved breakout success in her native UK and stateside with the striking debut, Our Version of Events, which was the biggest-selling album in 2012 in the UK and toppled The Beatles' long-standing album chart record for the most consecutive weeks spent in the top 10 (an astounding 66 weeks). Sandé emerged as the big winner at this year's 2013 Brit Awards, winning a pair of awards, including the coveted Album of the Year prize. The Los Angeles Times raves, “Emeli's folk-inflected soul/pop is Nina Simone and Bob Dylan all in one.” The New York Times calls her “a redemptive singer,” saying “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade.” Originally starting her music career as a songwriter, Sandé had many stellar credits for other artists (Alicia Keys, Rihanna) to her name when she traded it in for the spotlight. London native Michael Kiwanuka has been making waves with his debut album, the lush, acoustic-driven Home Again, which reached No. 4 on the British charts, spawned four singles, and went Top 10 around the world, earning the 24-year-old singer, songwriter and musician opening spots for superstar artists including Adele and Mumford & Sons, and a slot at the 2012 ACL Festival. Kiwanuka was announced the winner of the prestigious BBC Sound of 2012 poll, which has also been won by Jessie J, Florence + the Machine, and Ellie Goulding. Kiwanuka connects with the Austin audience with his blues-folk sound and timeless, soulful voice, which has led to comparisons to such artists as Bill Withers, Terry Callier, and John Martyn.

Graham Nash gets reflective in Anaheim

The co-founder of the popular British Invasion group the Hollies and longtime member of Crosby, Stills & Nash gave a rare solo performance Wednesday night at City National Grove of Anaheim, bolstered only by two top-tier sidemen. The good news for local fans of the 71-year-old singer-guitarist is how much stronger he sounded on his own compared to recent outings alongside Stephen Stills and David Crosby.

I was fairly disappointed with the legendary trio's headlining appearance at Doheny Blues Festival in May 2010, mostly because of ragged harmonies and a performance that felt dialed-in. Such was not the case with Nash's two-hour-plus turn in Anaheim. The performance was powerful, the arrangements memorable, and there was the added thrill of listening to Nash discuss many of his best-known classics and their genesis in rich detail.

The recent publication of Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life provides a backdrop for him to ponder his life and the songs that have enriched and chronicled it since he launched the Hollies with Allan Clarke more than 50 years ago. It didn't hurt that his two supporting players, keyboardist James Raymond and guitarist Shane Fontayne, were as tuned in to the intimate proceedings as their two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame leader.

Nash, his voice in fine form, opened with one of the ’60s most enduring numbers, "Bus Stop," reworked here in more folk fashion. Thankfully, the original’s distinctive harmonies were replicated, Nash's light tenor joined by the voices of his hired guns. Another Hollies classic, "King Midas in Reverse," was similarly – and powerfully – reproduced early in the set.

Two dozen songs were performed over the course of the two-part program, some of them freshly penned. Introducing one written for the late Levon Helm, the drummer and co-vocalist for the Band who died in April 2012, Nash explained what happens when a tune begins to surface: "They torture me if I don't get them out." That particular piece, "Back Home," was a beautiful Americana folk-rocker that wrapped with an effortless glide into "The Weight."

Another new song, "Exit Zero," was inspired by a drive Nash took through Colorado, during which he noticed expansive oil fields with towers burning away wasting untold amounts of energy. The bluesy rocker that resulted was greeted with cheers here from a crowd pleased to see Nash still using his music to reflect the world as he sees it.

Yet another freshly formed gem, "Burning for the Buddah," allowed him to unleash his artistic wrath on Tibet's treatment at the hands of China. He noted the suffering of the region’s monks: 128 have burned themselves in the past year, yet that has received little media coverage. "Burning" was one of the biggest sonic surprises of the night, playing out like a symphonic Peter Gabriel piece.

Of course, favorites such as "Our House" and "Wind on the Water" (he played piano on those) and "Just a Song Before I Go" were greeted like old friends by an audience that grew excited whenever enough details in spoken intros revealed what song was coming. "Wind on the Water" was especially potent, its ambitious arrangement delivered with grace by the three musicians.

Nash's encore included a sterling take on the Beatles' "Blackbird" and a spirited audience sing-along on one of his most-loved staples, the uplifting anthem "Teach Your Children."

Sights and Sounds: Jimi Hendrix, Two Door Cinema Club, The Human Rights Concerts, Lou Reed, Mogwai

Lots of things to share today. I want to start off reminding everybody to tune in tonight and watch PBS' “American Masters” series which offers an outstanding biography of Jimi Hendrix titled Hear My Train a Comin'. Make sure to check out my post that ran earlier this week that features my review of the two-hour documentary. It's truly worth watching.

Because I was reviewing Sarah Brightman on Saturday night, I was unable to catch Two Door Cinema Club at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Read George A. Paul's review of that show here. Sounds like I missed a great concert!

Today marks the release of Released: The Human Rights Concerts 1986-1998, an ambitious collection I featured in an in-depth post last month. There is a mini-review on the Pop Candy blog featured on the USA Today site. Click here to view that. I hope to see and review the collection soon. As I noted in my earlier post, I caught one of the initial shows in Inglewood, California in June 1986 and it remains one of my best concert-going experiences!

MOGWAI ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR NEW ALBUM, RAVE TAPES, SET FOR JAN. 21 RELEASE VIA SUB POP

Mogwai, who recently announced the release of their eighth studio album, Rave Tapes, on Jan. 21 via Sub Pop, have confirmed an extensive Spring tour of North America (dates listed below). The Scottish quintet gave fans an early listen to music from Rave Tapes last week, streaming the single “Remurdered” via Sub Pop’s Soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/subpop/mogwai-remurdered/s-2gdM2).  Pitchfork described the single as “night shivers coupled with blocky electronics,” adding that the track “heads down a mazy path while the volume gradually increases, ultimately peaking in a mesh of criss-crossing synthetic textures.” Rave Tapes was recorded over the summer in the band’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow and reunites the band with Hardcore Will Never Die But You Will Co-Producer Paul Savage. Mogwai previously announced two live dates for late 2013: a Nov. 28 performance at Junction in Cambridge, UK and a slot on All Tomorrow’s Parties “End of an Era” on Dec. 1 at Pontins Holiday Park in the UK. The band returns to the road in late January for a short European trek (dates listed below). In related news, Mogwai recently scored the French supernatural thriller, Les Revanants, the most popular TV series in Canal + history. The show has since aired in the UK to rave reviews and made its stateside debut as The Returned on The Sundance Channel on Oct. 31. Spectral Sarah Brightman show impresses

Wide range of powerfully performed songs at Honda Center came with stunning visuals.

While it might be plausible to hear material by alternative outfits Elbow ("One Day Like This"), Sigur Rós ("Glósóli") and Cocteau Twins ("Eperdu") covered by artists at Coachella or another renowned music festival, it’s less expected to hear such songs performed by operatic pop star Sarah Brightman. Yet she delivered all of them superbly during the first half of her tour-ending appearance in Anaheim Saturday night.

Not only did the enduring English soprano revisit those art-rock favorites during her Honda Center concert, but they were effortlessly incorporated into her distinctive manner, which blends musical theater, symphonic rock, opera, world music and electronica without short-changing any of those approaches. Her version of Elbow’s already sumptuous track was particularly effective, with her strong four-member band capturing the nuanced dynamics of the piece as it grows into an explosive anthem.

Having long been credited with pioneering the so-called classical crossover genre, the 53-year-old singer is likely one of few artists capable of tackling works as varied as Puccini’s "Nessun dorma" (the aria from "Turandot" provided a dramatic finish to the first half of her show), Paul McCartney’s "Venus and Mars" and Spanish songwriter José María Cano’s "Hijo de la Luna.” Impressively, she fuses her own style onto them without abandoning key elements of the original compositions.

Brightman's two-hour performance, spread across two acts and several gown changes, concluded the delayed stateside leg of her current Dreamchaser Tour, in support of her 11th solo album of the same name, centered on her interest in the heavens. Indeed, there has been widespread coverage of the singer's plans to visit the International Space Station in 2015, and her lifelong interest in interstellar exploration was further conveyed via stunning images of Earth and the moon as well as vintage footage from NASA and Russia’s space program, all projected on a large digital screen behind her.

So while Brightman herself moved very little during the concert, apart from being raised on a lift, the movements of several female dancers plus her show’s bold lighting and engaging images added power to her captivating vocals.

The constantly shifting range of material made for an interesting night. After launching with a number of songs from "Dreamchaser," she revisited some of her best-loved material, including the popular duet "Canto Della Terra" (performed with tenor Erkan Aki), the aforementioned "Nessun dorma" (which received thunderous applause) and a tender version of the traditional English ballad "Scarborough Fair,” popularized by Simon & Garfunkel.

Brightman and Aki also teamed up to deliver a crowd-pleasing rendition of "The Phantom of the Opera," ghoulish images of a castle projected behind them. Her soaring tone was on full display as the two singers harmonized powerfully while the band rocked solidly.

The next song, her internationally adored weeper "Time to Say Goodbye," utilized more tender elements of Brightman's voice, and the encore included a symphonic rendition of McCartney's planetary piece before the evening ended with an uplifting electronic version of her popular single "A Question of Honour."

Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin' offers revealing look at the legendary guitarist

No guitarist in the history of rock has been as influential and groundbreaking as the late Jimi Hendrix. From his contemporaries (The Beatles, Ten Years After) to his musical descendants (Lenny Kravitz, Gary Clark Jr.), Hendrix' reach continues to touch new audiences.
Now, more than four decades after his death at the age of 27, the pioneering musician's short but prolific life is celebrated via Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin', a two-hour documentary set to premiere on PBS Tuesday, Nov. 5 as part of THIRTEEN's American Masters series. 
Directed by two-time Grammy-winning filmmaker Bob Smeaton, the documentary provides a comprehensive look at his early interest in playing guitar while growing up in Seattle (his father reportedly purchased his first guitar for $5), to his service in the U.S. Army, his early success as a hired sideman for the likes of Little Richard and the Isley Brothers (we hear part of a 1964 recording featuring him performing a guitar solo on the group's "Testify") before going on to score solo success following his move to London in 1966.
Hendrix' story is brought fully to life with a fast-moving mix of archive and modern-day interviews as well as great concert footage and even home movies that were taken by Hendrix and drummer Mitch Mitchell. Long-time fans of Hendrix as well as new and casual followers of one of the 20th century's most gifted artists will all find plenty to keep watching throughout the compelling special. New interviews with rock notables such as Paul McCartney and Steve Winwood as well as those with a trio of women who were closest to him (Linda Keith, Faye Pridgon, Colette Mimram) and several music journalists all add texture to a television special that might otherwise have been overshadowed by Hendrix' arresting on-stage appearances (including previously-unseen footage of Hendrix at the 1968 Miami Pop Festival).

Set for release on the same day (Nov. 5, 2013) as Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin' is the 11-track audio collection Miami Pop Festival, an important recording that captured the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the first major rock festival staged on the East Coast, the May 1968 Miami Pop Festival. Opening with a blistering version of "Hey Joe" (that starts out unhurried but tactfully builds to a roar). Other classics delivered with a superb mix of rock attack and virtuoso skill include "Foxey Lady" and blazing "Fire." By the time Hendrix closed with a mighty version of "Purple Haze," it was clear the future of rock would never be the same. Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell return to Austin City Limits on Saturday, November 2

Austin, TX—November 1, 2013—Music legends Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell return to Austin City Limits (ACL) and share the ACL stage for the first time. The pair celebrate their shared history, their recent collaborative album Old Yellow Moon and the continuing power of the song in a new episode that premieres November 2^nd. Friends for forty years, Harris and Crowell have an entwined four-decade history of music-making. ACL veterans, both artists have each appeared on the program seven times, although this episode marks the first time the pair have performed together on the ACL stage. The Americana icons perform favorites and songs from their acclaimed duets album Old Yellow Moon. The collaboration was chosen as album of the year at this year's Americana Music Awards and the pair was honored as duo of the year. American Songwriter says of the album, “On Old Yellow Moon, Harris and Crowell embrace the entire range of life and music they've experienced, from the reckless passions of youth to the reflectiveness of age, from loose-limbed hillbilly boogies to graceful balladry.”

“It’s great to be back at the world’s greatest and longest-running music show,” says Harris as she takes the ACL stage with Crowell. The breathtaking performance includes the two longtime kindred spirits joining their voices on Crowell originals as well as revivals of songs by Roger Miller, Matraca Berg and Kris Kristofferson. Harris opens with some of her earlier Gram Parsons-era hits, and the duo fast-forwards to a more recent era for Harris' “Red Dirt Girl” and Crowell's “Rock of My Soul”, their voices wrapping the songs in the kind of harmonies only old friends can generate. Special guest Shawn Colvin joins in the finale for a spirited take on Crowell's “Stars On the Water.” The episode celebrates a longtime friendship and collaboration, and the pleasure the two music legends take from singing some of their favorite songs is palpable.

CLASSIC DEEP PURPLE GETS BOXED ON THE AUDIO FIDELITY COLLECTION Pioneering Hard Rockers' Machine Head, In Rock, Fireball and Who Do We Think We Are! Will Be Reissued as Gold CDs in New Numbered, Limited-Edition Set on November 19

Hot on the heels of the news that they have been nominated for 2014 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, classic rockers Deep Purple will be feted with a deluxe, limited-edition boxed set featuring 24-Karat Gold CDs of four of their best-selling albums, according to Audio Fidelity president Marshall Blonstein.  November 19 is the release date for DEEP PURPLE:  THE AUDIO FIDELITY COLLECTION, which will include IN ROCK (1970), FIREBALL (1971), MACHINE HEAD (1972) and WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! (1973).  The four CDs, containing such breakthrough Deep Purple hits as "Smoke on the Water" and "Woman From Tokyo," will be housed, appropriately, in an embossed metallic container, each engraved with a unique edition number, and will be sold through both online and traditional retail outlets. Embossed, numbered container. THE AUDIO FIDELITY COLLECTION features the legendary second lineup of Deep Purple, which originally formed in 1967 in Hertfordshire, north of London. By 1970, the pioneering hard-rock/metal quintet consisted of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, vocalist Ian Gillan, keyboardist Jon Lord, bassist Roger Glover and drummer Ian Paice. Originally issued in the U.S. by Warner Bros. Records, the four albums represent the band at the peak of its popularity and creative powers. The double-platinum MACHINE HEAD reached No. 7 on Billboard's Top Albums chart; FIREBALL, IN ROCK and WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! all were certified Gold. "Woman from Tokyo" (from WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE!) and "Smoke on the Water" (MACHINE HEAD) were Top 10 singles and remain staples of classic-rock radio. (Reflecting in 2012 on Deep Purple's long overdue nomination for Hall of Fame induction, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather commented, "What's the first song every kid learns to play? 'Smoke on the Water.' And they're not [yet] in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?")    All four discs in THE AUDIO FIDELITY COLLECTION will contain original album artwork and will feature the remastering done by engineer Steve Hoffman when the individual CDs were previously issued by Audio Fidelity. "They have been unavailable for five years," says label president Blonstein, "and since then we've had numerous requests from customers to 'reissue the reissue.' So we decided to offer them again, but in this special boxed-set edition." Indeed, copies of the earlier MACHINE HEAD and WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE! currently fetch handsome prices on sites like Amazon and eBay. To distinguish the forthcoming CDs from the earlier editions-and to enhance the unique collectability aspects of the boxed set-the new discs' outer sleeves come with gold, instead of black slip cases.

Deep Purple, which has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, was announced (on October 16) as a nominee for the 29th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, which will be held in New York City in April of 2014. Inductee selections will be announced in December. Founded in 2002 by Marshall Blonstein, Audio Fidelity specializes in deluxe reissues of classic popular-music recordings for the audiophile and collector markets. The Camarillo, California-based label is best known for its 24-karat Gold CDs and its virgin-vinyl album editions, though it also releases DVD titles. Audio Fidelity emerged out of the pioneering DCC Compact Classics label that Blonstein started in 1986, following stints as president of Island Records and co-founder of Ode Records (where he helped make Carole King's Tapestry one of the best-selling albums of all time and built the cult-film franchises The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke).
