America

America & Friends — Live At The Ventura Theater is a new Blu-ray title that captures classic rock favorite America performing the band's hit singles "A Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," Sister Golden Hair," "I Need You" and more. Additionally, guests Andrew Gold and Stephen Bishop perform their most beloved hits at the event and join America's Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley on stage as well. Highlights include Gold's rousing "Lonely Boy," Bishop's "It Might Be You," and America's "Sister Golden Hair." Filmed at the Ventura Theater in Ventura, California, bonus features on the Blu-ray include bonus footage, credits, a fascinating interview with Gold, Bishop, Bunnell and Beckley as well as a photo gallery. Title:
Black Sabbath: The End (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi
Tell me more: Heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath closed out a 50-year legacy with a concert in the band's hometown of Birmingham, England on Feb. 4, 2017. That already-legendary show is celebrated on the aptly-dubbed "The End" (available for the first time ever via the 4K UltraHD format). Fans of Black Sabbath's hard-hitting rock will thrill at seeing singer Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and touring members Tommy Clufetos (drums) and Adam Wakeman (keyboards, guitar) run through their signature blend of heavy metal in front of a sold-out crowd. All the essentials are included on the set, including "War Pigs," "Behind the Wall of Sleep," "Iron Man" and emotional encore-ending "Paranoid." Director Dick Carruthers did a terrific job of capturing the band's musical style and relationship with fans courtesy of a creative mix of camera shots showcasing the band's performance and crowd reactions that immerses the viewer into this career-capping moment. Artist:
Eric Clapton
Title: Slowhand At 70 — Live At The Royal Albert Hall  (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Eric Clapton, The Yardbirds, Derek & The Dominos
Tell me more:
Slowhand At 70 — Live At The Royal Albert Hall is a landmark concert film previously issued on DVD and Blu-ray in November 2015, but is now newly available for the first time via the immersive 4K UltraHD format. Eric Clapton's 2015 performances during a seven-night run at Royal Albert Hall found the singer-guitarist celebrating his 70th birthday at his favorite venue; highlights include Slowhand playing both bona fide classics and deep cuts. Among this writer's early favorite performances on the title are his artful cover of JJ Cale's "Somebody's Knockin' On My Door" that opens the set, a musical reading of Willie Dixon's Chicago blues-flavored "Hoochie Coochie Man," and his reggae take on his 1974 number one hit "I Shot The Sheriff." The concert film's power only grows from there as evidenced by potent acoustic-styled takes on the tender "Tears In Heaven" and "Layla," as well as rousing electric versions of "Let It Rain," "Crossroads," "Cocaine" and "High Time We Went." While the parade of blues rock classics highlight Clapton's enduring powers as a guitar virtuoso, the heartfelt "Wonderful Tonight" showcases his emotive lead vocals. Artist:
Def Leppard
Title: Def Leppard One Night Only Live at The Leadmill Sheffield May 19, 2023 (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Def Leppard, Queen
Tell me more: Released on Oct. 11,
Def Leppard One Night Only Live at The Leadmill Sheffield May 19, 2023 is a new title that is available on audio CD, DVD+CD, Limited Edition 2LP pressed on orange vinyl, as well as via digital audio and digital video. On the eve of the British rock outfit's largest UK/European run ever — including a sold-out date at Wembley Stadium — Def Leppard streamed a one-off live concert performance from the historic Sheffield venue The Leadmill. This unique 13-track set was one of the most intimate shows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers had played in more than 35 years, and included bona fide hits as well as material from the band's latest album Drastic Symphonies (recorded at Abbey Road Studios). There is a genuine excitement and energy displayed between the band members and audience across the 13-track concert. The set is front loaded with deep album cuts and rarities while the home stretch features several of the quintet's most beloved material. Highlights abound during the live set (the DVD+CD format is reviewed here) including the Queen-flavored opener "Action," infectious rocker "Let It Go" (the latter with its bewitching verses that segue into explosive choruses), the introspective rocker "Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes)" showcasing Joe Elliott's lead vocals and the dazzling tandem lead guitar work of Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell, powerful "Bringin' On The Heartbreak and a particularly powerful marathon take on "Hysteria." Def Leppard closes with the crowd-pleasing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and party-mining rocker "Wasted." Information: defleppard.com.

Artist:
Santana
Title: Santana: Live At US Festival (MVD Visual)
You might like if you enjoy: Carlos Santana, Los Lobos, classic rock
Tell me more: Live At US Festival
is a newly-released Blu-ray title that captures guitar master Carlos Santana and his top-tier band at their legendary appearance at the US Festival staged in Southern California on Sept. 4, 1982. Directed by rockumentarian Glenn Aveni, Santana: Live At Us Festival chronicles one of Santana's most memorable and high-profile performances. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's band is outstanding; singer-rhythm guitarist Alex Ligertwood, keyboardist Richard Baker, bassist David Margen, drummer Graham Lear, percussionists Raul Rekow, Orestas Vilat and Armando Peraza bring a power and enthusiastic touch to all of the material performed here. The performance features Santana performing powerful versions of classics including "Black Magic Woman," Oye Como Va" and an especially dynamic take on "Nowhere To Run." Other highlights include a cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There" bolstered by Santana's signature lead guitar playing that segues into John McLaughlin's "Marbles," as well as the catchy rocker "Open Invitation." Bonus features on the Blu-ray include interview segments with Santana. Information: mvdvisual.com.

Artist: Rainbow
Title: Live In Munich 1977 (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Deep Purple, Rainbow, Dio, Greta Van Fleet
Tell me more: On Oct. 20, 1977, the only full-length concert featuring the classic Rainbow lineup of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell ever professionally filmed was captured at Munich Olympiahalle in Germany during the band's 1977 European tour. Now the historic concert event is available as a wonderful must-own special edition 2CD+DVD set courtesy of Mercury Studios. Indeed, this is a concert that almost never was; Blackmore arrived in Munich close to showtime after reportedly being smuggled out of Austria after getting into trouble with police at a gig there two nights earlier. That event seemed to rouse Blackmore and company to deliver an especially riveting performance on this night. Over the course of just under two hours, Rainbow delivers a captivating set of favorites including the speedy opener "Kill The King" showcasing Dio's soaring lead vocals, the heavy "Mistreated" blending British hard rock, Renaissance and progressive rock styles, the ambitious "Catch The Rainbow" stretching from a beautiful opening to a fiery rocker, and the straight-forward aptly-titled "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll." The concert wraps with stellar versions of "Man On The Silver Mountain," "Still I'm Sad" and "Do You Close Your Eyes," the latter featuring Blackmore alone on stage destroying his electric guitar as part of a truly explosive finale. In addition to the full-length concert, the 146-minute DVD includes original promo videos for "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll," "Gates Of Babylon" and "L.A. Connection," as well as a photo gallery, slideshow with audio commentary, interviews, and the "Rainbow Over Texas '76" feature (the latter which includes addition interviews and performance footage). The physical package also comes with a wonderful fully-illustrated 12-page booklet. Information: mercurystudios.co.

MERCURY STUDIOS PRESENTS

RAINBOW

LIVE IN MUNICH 1977

SPECIAL EDITION 2CD+DVD set

~FEATURING CLASSIC LINE-UP OF BLACKMORE, DIO, AND POWELL~

~SEPTEMBER 19, 2024~

Pre-order HERE

New York, NY (July 24, 2024) -- On September 19, Mercury Studios will release Rainbow: Live In Munich 1977 as a Special Edition 2CD+DVD package. This show has been previously released as individual DVD and 2CD packages in the past, and this is the first time they have been packaged together.

Captured during the band’s 1977 European tour, Live In Munich is the only full live concert ever filmed with the classic Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio/Cozy Powell classic line-up.

Rainbow was the brainchild of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, created in 1975 after his departure from Deep Purple. A string of hit albums ignited immediate success, which persevered until 1983, when Blackmore disbanded the group (and re- joined Deep Purple). Featuring the line-up of Blackmore, Cozy Powell (drums), Bob Daisley (bass), David Stone (keyboards), and premiere Rock and Roll vocalist Ronnie James Dio, the excitement in the air during this night was electric. This might be due, in part, to Blackmore’s late arrival to Munich just before the concert, after being smuggled out of Austria after trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier. This seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig.

The DVD includes original promo videos for “Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “Gates Of Babylon,” and “L.A. Connection,” a photo gallery, slideshow with audio commentary, interviews, and the “Rainbow Over Texas ‘76” feature, which includes additional interviews and performance footage. Truly, Live In Munich 1977 is a brilliant showcase of the primal electricity of Rainbow.

Los Angeles, CA – Not many real life events can elicit chills from sci-fi fans but when William Shatner, who portrayed space captain James T. Eclectic Releases To Stir The Sonic Soul: Blackmore's Night, The Black Crowes, Lorenzo Wolff, Melody Duncan, Jody Porter

Any week where I can champion new audio releases covering the far-flung genres of Renaissance music, Southern rock, chamber-pop folk and indie rock is a great one.

Artist:
Blackmore's Night
Title: Nature's Light (earMUSIC)
You might like if you enjoy: Ritchie Blackmore, Blackmore's Night, Renaissance music
Tell me more: Those wondering if there is any sonic bridge between the Renaissance era (1400-1600) and modern rock music need listen no further than Blackmore's Night, the troupe led by multi-instrumentalist Ritchie Blackmore and singer/multi-instrumentalist Candice Night. Nature's Light marks the collective's first new album in six years; a long wait to be sure but the new 10-track LP fully immerses the listener in a sound that blends past and present music making with artful sublimity. The range and scope of wonderful songs and instrumental pieces on the LP includes the Celtic-flavored "Feather In The Wind," gorgeous Blackmore-penned instrumental "Darker Shade Of Black" (bolstered by an especially-melodic electric guitar solo), traditional "Going To The Faire," triumphant title track and evocative "Second Element." Those who miss Blackmore's signature rock guitar work with Deep Purple and Rainbow will want to revel in "Der letzte Musketier," an instrumental confirming that the 75-year-old British legend is still one of the world's most gifted guitar heroes. Released on March 12, Nature's Light is available on multiple formats including audio CD, digital, vinyl, as well as a strictly-limited 2CD hardcover media book with a bonus disc of selected songs from the group's extensive back catalogue. Information: blackmoresnight.com.

Artist:
The Black Crowes
Title: Shake Your Money Maker (Target Exclusive) (UMe)
You might like if you enjoy: The Black Crowes, The Rolling Stones, Humble Pie
Tell me more: One of the first great albums of the '90s and a bona fide rock classic of the era, the Black Crowes' Shake Your Money Maker has been reissued and has never sounded better. Rock radio still features a trio of the album's gems (the rocking "Jealous Again" and "Hard To Handle" along with the sweet Southern blues-rock ballad "She Talks to Angels") in regular rotation, but the disc's strength extend to the ragged British blues cut "Twice As Hard," Rolling Stones-styled "Sister Luck" and "Thick N' Thin" and others. In addition to the original remastered album that occupies disc 1, a second disc includes a number of unreleased songs and B-sides (a cover of Humble's Pie's "3- Days in the Hole" and horn section-draped "Hard To Handle" are particularly notable). Rounding out the 3-disc version I have (available for $20.99 on retail giant's Target.com website) is a previously-unreleased 1990 Atlanta concert recording that fully captures the energy of the quintet led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson. There are several other configurations of the reissue available including a limited edition money green colored vinyl LP version on sale at Amazon.com. Information: TheBlackCrowes.com.

Artist:
Lorenzo Wolff
Title: Down Where the Valleys Are Low: Another Otherworld for Judee Sill (StorySound Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Judee Sill, Courtney Barnett, Lorenzo Wolff
Tell me more: Music aficionados will be forgiven if they are not familiar with the entrancing music of the late singer-songwriter Judee Sill, who passed away in November 1979 at the age of 35. Although Sill was David Geffen's first signing to his Asylum label in the early '70s, her eponymous 1971 debut and 1973's Heart Food failed to achieve the success of titles from other Asylum artists including Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell. Producer/multi-instrumentalist Lorenzo Wolff — who was first introduced to Sill in 2010 on a playlist created by tour-mate Henry Wolfe — has crafted a compelling and affecting tribute to Sill titled Down Where the Valleys Are Low: Another Otherworld for Judee Sill. Wolff has gathered different lead singers for each of the seven songs of the wide-ranging tribute. Singer Mary-Elaine Jenkins' melancholy vocals lift the magnificent title track. Bartees Strange brings his rich baritone to the soaring Americana-styled "The Pearl." The diversity of the selections is electrifying; the experimental "Crayon Angels" (featuring vocalist Grace McLean), lush "The Kiss" (featuring singer Emily Holden) and haunting "There's a Rugged Road" (with Osei Essed on lead vocals) are among the other elegant Sill-penned songs on the Wolff-produced collection. Information: StorySoundRecords.com.

Artist:
Melody Duncan
Title: Wolf Song (Melody Duncan)
You might like if you enjoy: Cowboy Junkies, First Aid Kit, Brandi Carlile
Tell me more: A talented singer, songwriter and fiddler, Melody Duncan's newly-released Wolf Song was also recorded and produced by the Atlanta, Georgia-based artist in her home studio. The disc is beautiful throughout, the 11 songs probing the world with an intimate and personal touch. Evoking the feeling of being in the home studio with Duncan amidst the creation of her recordings, the blend of sonic intimacy and personal songcraft is remarkably in tune with our times. "Lonely" shines with elements including vocal layering, piano and whistling surrounding Duncan's slightly raspy (but lovely) vocals. The straightforward acoustic jewel "Over The Hill" is sparse with her voice accompanied by a lone guitar, but the power of her reflective message about facing each and every challenge is a powerful one to be sure. Just as mighty are her introspective baroque folk originals "Reunion" and "Campfire" that follow. The aptly-titled "Rain Storm" is one of the most interesting disc-ending tracks in memory, a reminder of nature's unparalleled power and humanity's own gift to treasure the sounds that lurk all around us. Information: MelodyDuncanMusic.com.

Artist:
Jody Porter
Title: Waterways (Rare Rock Records)
You might like if you enjoy: The Belltower, The Church, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Doves
Tell me more: Jody Porter — acclaimed as the lead guitarist of Fountains of Wayne — is back with his latest solo effort (Waterways). The sound across the 12-track album is lush and inviting, Porter's euphonious voice is emotive and the musicianship is sharp and stylish. Highlights abound; the dreamy "Moonbeam Reach" draws favorable comparisons with the wistful work of The Church and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. Elsewhere the disc's expansive riches include the driving "Sunsick Moon," indie rocker "Girl From The Other Side," dreamy "Crashland" and power pop-mining "Neverlasting Love." Several stellar cuts round out the set including the swirling "Synching Ships," experimental rocker "Masters At Work" and enchanting "WaterwaysPt2." The wonderful-sounding album was produced by Porter and Fountains of Wayne drummer Brian Young. Information: https://jodyporter1.bandcamp.com.
