New music: Simple Minds, Social Distortion, The Three O'Clock, Don McLean, Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels

Grab these essential reissues, special collections and archive titles while they are available.

Artist:
Simple Minds
Title: Acoustic In Concert (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Simple Minds, U2, Coldplay
Tell me more: Although it has been more than 45 years since Simple Minds formed in Glasgow, Scotland, the troupe's music resonates with as much power as ever as on the Blu-ray+CD release Acoustic In Concert. Captured at London's legendary Hackey Empire on Nov. 10, 2016, Simple Minds' performance as part of BBC Radio 2's "In Concert" series is a revelation for those who love textured and artful melodic alt rock. While the band members use acoustic instruments this is definitely no easy listening affair. Singer Jim Kerr and guitar great Charlie Burchill lead the ensemble through a potent and impassioned concert that includes well-known hits such as "Promised You a Miracle," "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Someone Somewhere in Summertime," "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself," as well as tributes to some of the group's own heroes (David Bowie's "Andy Warhol" and Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot"). The concert ends with Simple Minds being joined on stage by groundbreaking English singer-songwriter Steve Harley to perform a joyous "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)." The audio and visual elements on the Blu-ray are outstanding. Information: simpleminds.com and mercurystudios.co.

Artist:
Social Distortion
Title: Mommy's Little Monster (Craft Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Social Distortion, Mike Ness, The Adolescents, The Offspring
Tell me more: Craft Recordings' 40th Anniversary reissue of Social Distortion's fiery debut Mommy's Little Monster is a must-have for fans of the groundbreaking Southern California punk rock outfit. Released on Nov. 10 on 180-gram vinyl and digital formats, the album has been newly remastered from the original analog tapes that were recorded on Christmas Eve in 1982 at The Casbah recording studios in Fullerton, CA. The album features several of Social Distortion's early standout tracks including the blistering title track, hard-edged "The Creeps (I Just Wanna Give You)," and hardcore-styled single "Another State of Mind." In addition to classic black vinyl, Mommy's Little Monster is available in a variety of exclusive limited edition color ways, including ruby red, black & white marble, an exclusive white pressing at Barnes & Noble, and a gray variant at RevolverMag.com. Information: CraftRecordings.com.

Artist:
The Three O'Clock
Title: Sixteen Tambourines (Yep Roc Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Rain Parade, The Bangles, Big Star
Tell me more: As one of the leaders of the so-called "Paisley Underground" Los Angeles area music scene in the early 1980s, The Three O'Clock blended garage rock, psychedelic pop, college rock and power pop into a groundbreaking brew. The band's 1984 sophomore album Sixteen Tambourines has been reissued in celebration of its 40th anniversary, and has been remastered by Bill Inglot and Dave Schultz. The wonderful sounding reissue provides a fantastic chance to discover (or rediscover) this outstanding masterwork. Sixteen Tambourines features a myriad of wonderful tracks including the rocking opener "Jet Fighter," dreamy "Stupid Einstein," melodic "And So We Run," Baroque pop original "Tomorrow," dance-minded "When Lightning Starts" and scintillating "Seeing Is Believing." Information: https://thethreeoclock.bandcamp.com/music.

Artist:
Don McLean
Title: Christmas Memories: Remixed and Remastered  (BFD/Orchard)
You might like if you enjoy: Don McLean, John Denver, XXXXX
Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Don McLean ("American Pie," "Vincent," "Castles in the Air") has released one of the essential holiday music collections of 2023. Christmas Memories: Remixed and Remastered features McLean's terrific original arrangements of a dozen Christmas favorites. McLean uses his signature vocals to bring warmth and bona fide emotion to all the selections. The disc opens with a delightfully retro take on "Blue Christmas" before showcasing his strong vocals on the mostly a cappella "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." Other standouts include the compelling "I Heard The Bells on Christmas Day," a jazzy "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," poignant acoustic-styled "Silent Night," and Renaissance-mining "The Burgundian Carol." "Oh Little Town of Bethlehem" is particularly beautiful and McLean's version utilizes nuanced orchestration and a full choir to conjure up the magic of classic '50s and '60s recordings.  McLean will perform at the Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino in Chandler, AZ on Feb. 10, 2024. Information: donmclean.com.

Artist:
Gram Parsons & the Fallen Angels
Title: The Last Roundup: Live from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia, 3/16//73 (Amoeba Music)
You might like if you enjoy: The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, Wilco, Merle Haggard
Tell me more: Fate is on full display across the two-LP live recording titled The Last Roundup: Live from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia, 3/16/73. The second release of the Gram Parsons Archive series, the vinyl release features the first new Gram Parsons solo material issued in 40 years (Parsons died at age of 26 at the Joshua Tree Inn in nearby Joshua Tree, CA on Sept. 19, 1973). The record chronicles a complete performance by Parsons and the Fallen Angels performed on March 16, 1973. In addition to Parsons (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) and the then-unknown Emmylou Harris (vocals), the troupe includes guitarist Jock Barkley, pedal steel guitarist Neil Flanz, drummer N.D. Smart and bassist Kyle Tullis. In a press release distributed in connection with the Record Store Day Black Friday release, Flanz (who sadly died in 2021) stated that he felt this was the ensemble's best performance of the entire tour so he requested a soundboard recording of the show; he held onto the cassette for 40 years before it was acquired by Amoeba Music. The tape was then lost for about 10 years, and recently rediscovered and restored to be used for The Last Roundup: Live from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia, 3/16/73.

Although there are some limitations to the recording captured on a cassette more than 50 years ago, the power of the performance from an outstanding group at the height of their powers shines through across the recording. The version of "We'll Sweep Out The Ashes" is an early standout, showcasing the bewitching sound created when Parson and Harris sing together. A speedy version of the Flying Burrito Brothers' "My Uncle" displays the band's virtuoso chops and Parson's signature alternative country approach.

Other early highlights on the title include a beautiful take on Parsons' Byrds-era Sweetheart of the Rodeo track "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," and wistful "Streets of Baltimore," the latter featuring incredible harmonies and pedal steel magic courtesy of Flanz.

An energetic take on Merle Haggard's Bakersfield country classic "California Cotton Fields," rousing blues-country track "Cry One More Time," pedal steel- and lead guitar-adorned "The New Soft Shoe" and lovely acoustic original "Sin City" are all spectacular. My favorite selection is a haunting version of the Everly Brothers 1960 recording "Love Hurts," where Harris and Parsons sing in tandem with a palpable and poignant power that brings tears.

The only live club show of Parsons ever released, The Last Roundup: Live from the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia, 3/16/73 is truly an incredible chance to revisit the groundbreaking artist's legacy. Information: amoeba.com.

Sights and Sounds: Kim Gordon, Chris Hillman, The GRAMMY Museum®

Check out my roundup of breaking music news...Robert Kinsler

Kim Gordon releases new video for “Hungry Baby”
starring Coco Gordon-Moore, directed by Clara Balzary

From Solo Debut Album No Home Record, Out Now on Matador

Today legendary musician and multi-disciplinary artist Kim Gordon releases the new video for “Hungry Baby,” directed by Clara Balzary and starring Coco Gordon-Moore, produced by Ways & Means. “Hungry Baby” is on Kim’s solo debut album, No Home Record, which was released last Fall on Matador Records to critical acclaim.

Clara Balzary says of the video, “I came up with the idea for the video after listening to “Hungry Baby” on a 2020 angst fueled walk around my suburban neighborhood. Coco is an amazing performer, and loved her as this character with such a raging internal world set against that quiet + empty backdrop of the parking lot. I’m so grateful to Kim for being so supportive and open to the idea. She is such a role model as someone for whom an art practice always comes before worries about ego or branding. The talented Sadie Wilking worked with Coco on choreography, and we couldn’t have done any of it without the legendary cinematographer and friend, Christopher Blauvelt, who is always so generous with his craft.”

No Home Record was produced largely by Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Ariel Pink, Sky Ferreira) at Sphere Ranch in Los Angeles, along with contributions from Shawn Everett (Jim James, The Voidz, The War on Drugs) and composer/filmmaker Jake Meginsky (L’appel Du Vide). Gordon’s solo debut album’s title is a nod to the French-Belgian director Chantal Akerman’s film No Home Movie.

“Why a solo record? And why now?,” Gordon mused of the upcoming solo debut. “I don’t know, but it wouldn’t have happened without the persistence of Justin Raisen. Living in LA the last few years it feels like home, but the transience of the place makes it feel sometimes like no home.”

Since co-founding the seminal Sonic Youth in the early 80’s, Kim Gordon has remained at the nexus of music, fashion, art and (more recently) books and film. In the past few years alone, Gordon has debuted in the #1 spot on the NY Times Bestseller List with her 2015 memoir Girl In A Band, acted alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill under the direction of Gus Van Sant (in 2018’s “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot”), released music and performed as one half of Body/Head alongside Bill Nace, and opened multiple solo-exhibitions at internationally renowned museums.

Listen to No Home Record HERE.

Praise for No Home Record:

"The art star queen of New York cool...The music is a swirling aural collage with splashes of vintage Sonic Youth noise rock, offset by jagged, impressionistic lyrics..."
- The New York Times

"Kim Gordon is like the Joan Didion of indie rock, an avatar of laconic California cool, a figure both utterly familiar and inscrutable...as ferocious as she’s ever been." - Vogue

"Kim Gordon’s thrilling solo debut lives at the vanguard of sound and performance, shot through with the beautiful, unsparing noise that has always defined her art." - Pitchfork, Best New Music

"...a set of hard-hitting songs that can also feel dreamlike. The searing, searching album evokes music from Eighties New York rap to experimental electronics to Sonic Youth’s tidal noise rock..." - Rolling Stone

"...A heavily electronic soundscape that mostly leaves behind the squalling guitars of her longtime band Sonic Youth and finds new ways to sound experimental" - Vanity Fair

"One of the finest and most captivatingly intense rock records of 2019" - The FADER

"Through every heady drone, spacious dub, riotous punk rager and lysergic trap beat, Gordon's scorched rasp scrapes the shocked psyche clean." - NPR

"Her new album is an explosion of her freedom to be the artist that she’s always been, mixing poetry, music and, at times, laugh-out-loud funny lyrics." - Jen Kirkman, Playboy.com

"Gordon delivers a collection of biting observations on consumerism and pop culture, braiding threads of noise rock, hip-hop, and electronic music into her own unique fabric - New York Magazine’s Vulture, "The Best Albums of 2019”

“this longtime queen of the NYC underground stretches out again through layers of noise and melody, guitars and electronics, taking cues equally from the Stooges and underground hip-hop, with lyrics that are jagged and impressionistic...Gordon is dependably uncompromising, reflecting on tensions past and still to come." - LA Times

“A disorienting meditation on image and fantasy, LA’s bread and butter." - Cultured Magazine

"A defiant solo debut perfectly attuned to the ambient anger of the moment" - Consequence of Sound

"It’s jagged, chaotic and mesmerizing in a way that pulls you inevitably into the thick of it, as if the songs were exerting their own inescapable gravity." - Paste Magazine, “Best Punk Albums of 2019”

"No Home Record: a primal collection of songs that seem to come from the deepest and freest parts of her soul. There is no start or end; just freedom." - LADYGUNN

"A personal evolution, bringing all aspects of Gordon’s multidisciplinary creativity together under one roof. Her preferred minimalist aesthetic...is adeptly channeled into the sparsely layered songwriting on No Home Record." - Premier Guitar

Chris Hillman's compelling autobiography 'Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother and Beyond' goes into second printing; will appear at Far West Folk Alliance

Appearing in virtual interview at Far West Folk Alliance on March 3, 2021 and in Signature Sounds interview on March 7, 2021

Chris Hillman
is arguably the primary architect of what’s come to be known as country rock. After playing the Southern California folk and bluegrass circuit, he joined Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke as an original member of The Byrds. He went on to partner with Gram Parsons to launch The Flying Burrito Brothers, recording a handful of albums that have become touchstones of the Americana genre.

Hillman then embarked on a prolific recording career as a member of Stephen Stills’ Manassas, as a solo artist, and as a member of several groups that he insists sound more like law firms than bands: Souther-Hillman-Furay with acclaimed songwriter J.D. Souther and former Buffalo Springfield and Poco member Richie Furay; McGuinn, Clark & Hillman with two of his fellow former Byrds; and Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen with legendary bluegrass musicians Tony Rice, Larry Rice, and longtime collaborator and duo partner Herb Pedersen. As a songwriter, he appeared on the Billboard singles charts in four consecutive decades, and his songs have been recorded by a diverse range of artists, from Steve Earle to Patti Smith to Roy Rogers. In the 1980s, Hillman launched a successful mainstream country group when he formed The Desert Rose Band with Pedersen and John Jorgenson, scoring eight Billboard Top 10 country hits. In the midst of his country success he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with the other original members of the Byrds. He has since released a number of solo efforts, including 2017’s highly-acclaimed Bidin’ My Time, which was the final album produced by Tom Petty with executive producer Pedersen.

Hillman’s memoir, Time Between: My Life as a Byrd, Burrito Brother and Beyond, first published November 17, 2020 by BMG Books, has gone into its second printing and will be available at retail on February 23, 2021.

Hillman remains active on the interview circuit. On March 3 he will be featured at Far West Folk Alliance’s virtual conference, “Best of the West & Beyond,” interviewed by journalist Randy Lewis. He will appear on the Signature Sounds Interview series on March 7.

Four tours have been postponed due to the pandemic: The East Coast shows will move to spring of 2022. Midwest dates will move to September, Florida shows to October and Texas shows to November of this year.

In the memoir, Hillman takes readers behind the curtain of his quintessentially Southern Californian experience. Raised in San Diego County’s then-rural Rancho Santa Fe, Chris grew up in an idyllic 1950s environment that was filled with TV cowboys, horseback riding, exploring the outdoors, surfing, discovering girls, and falling in love with music. When his older sister came home from college with a stack of records by folk artists such as Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, Chris was hooked. He soon fell in love with the bluegrass music of Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and The Stanley Brothers, spending hours mastering the guitar and mandolin. Once the Beatles invaded America, the various aspects of Hillman’s musical DNA came together that would eventually lead to him become a pioneering founding father of country-rock.

According to Hillman, "I never anticipated such an incredible response to my book, Time Between, and to already be in the second printing is just phenomenal. I'm grateful to the many people who have embraced it."

“BMG has been so pleased with the reaction to Chris’s book,” adds Scott B. Bomar, Publisher and Senior Director of the company’s growing Books department. “We knew it was great, which is why we signed it, but even we were surprised by how swiftly we needed another printing. Nearly the entire first print run was accounted for by the time it hit the market, and we had to scramble to get another print run initiated during the busy holiday season. That’s a good problem to have. The critics and, more importantly, the fans have really resonated with Chris’s direct and honest style. We’re thrilled to be a part of helping him tell his story.”

The book won press accolades upon publication. “It’s fascinating to read about his view from slightly out of the spotlight as countless memorable characters drift in and out of his life,” noted Variety. Forbes echoed: “To say that musician Chris Hillman had an interesting musical career would be a definite understatement. In the 1960s, Hillman was a member of two pioneering bands ... So it only makes sense that Hillman, who continues to record as a solo artist, pen a memoir about his time with those bands.”

Singer-songwriter Wesley Stace, reviewing in The Wall Street Journal, wrote: “Mr. Hillman, a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer with four Grammy nominations to his name, has a solid claim as anyone — though he modestly does not make it — to have invented the entire genre of country rock ... The cutthroat mentality of a band on the make is tactfully told. Mr. Hillman, a longtime Christian who understands that it's all about motes and beams, is as discreet about other people's bad choices as he is about his own, and Time Between gives him a chance to reflect, make amends and give thanks.”
No Depression summed it up: “Chris, who is still an active musician, has written a concise memoir that’s narrated in an easy-going conversational manner ... it’s hard to put down.”
“Chris Hillman has been a well-kept secret in the history of rock. Yeah, we all know how great he was in the Byrds, but his contributions go well beyond that. Chris was a true innovator — the man who invented country rock. Every time the Eagles board their private jet Chris at least paid for the fuel.” —Tom Petty

“Chris Hillman is a bona fide pioneering godfather to generations of musical souls who’ve sought inspiration at that divine crossroads where rock & roll, country, bluegrass, folk, honky tonk, and gospel music intersect and harmonize. He’s a national treasure, truly a statesman.”
—Marty Stuart

Ambition displayed on new collections

A trio of releases all exploring the sounds of groundbreaking favorites are now available.

Artist: Mike Peters
Title: STREAM {Hurricane of Change} (LABEL HERE)
You might like if you enjoy: The Alarm, U2, The Waterboys
Tell me more: Poetic and poignant, STREAM  {Hurricane of Change} is an ambitious two-disc work from Alarm singer-songwriter Mike Peters. The 39-track collection is a mix of spoken word chapters and full-length songs, all chronicling the turbulent times and events of the late '80s that helped fuel the creation of that band's classic Eye of the Hurricane (1987), Electric Folklore (1988) and Change (1989) albums. The performances featured on STREAM are forceful to be sure, spanning from Celtic-tinged moments (notably on "A New South Wales" and "Irish Sea") and blues ("Shelter") to folk ("Rose Beyond The Wall," "World On Fire") and driving rockers ("Hallowed Ground," "Only Love Can Set Me Free"). Some of the Alarm's most beloved tracks are included and reworked as part of this concept work, with "Rescue Me" delivered as an introspective foray where Peters' voice is positioned amidst gospel vocals, piano and acoustic guitar. "Rain In The Summertime" is similarly re-imagined in a more folk rock-styled sonic setting. Peters' signature vocals sound as great as they did 30 years ago and his sense of purpose shines across the inspired autobiographical-minded set. Information: alarm.com.

Artist: Jack Russell's Great White
Title: Once Bitten Acoustic Bytes (Deadline Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Great White, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Jack Russell revisits many of Great White's most beloved hits on the aptly-dubbed Once Bitten Acoustic Bytes, with his top-tier vocals taking center stage on the 10-track collection that pays tribute to Great White's 1987 classic LP. Armed with his powerful voice, Russell guides his band through acoustic-flavored material that simultaneously maintains a propulsive and bona fide rocking spirit. "Gonna Getcha" is bolstered by some fiery lead guitar work on an acoustic guitar, while "Rock Me" has a more playful bluesy vibe than the original recording of the favorite. My favorites on the album are the tender "Save All Your Love" and a first-rate mostly-faithful cover of the classic Led Zeppelin classic "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You." Joining Russell on this LP are the talents of guitarist Robby Lochner (who also produced the album), guitarist Tony Montana, bassist Dan McNay and drummer Dicki Fliszer. Once Bitten Acoustic Bytes is available via digital, on audio CD and via a limited-edition blue vinyl LP. Information: CleopatraRecords.com.

Artist: New Riders of the Purple Sage
Title: Field Trip (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, the Grateful Dead, the Flying Burrito Brothers
Tell me more: The live recording of New Riders of the Purple Sage featured on Field Trip is a joyful trip into the past. Recorded on Aug. 27, 1972 on the site that now hosts the Oregon Country Fair, this was a wonderfully loose performance of a country-rock band sharing the bill with the Grateful Dead and giving its all. The 17-track performance provides a chance for the band to deliver uptempo countrified nuggets ("Truck Drivin' Man," "Hello Mary Lou"), tender ballads ("Linda," "Lochinvar"), blues-tinged rockers ("Groupie") and mid tempo gems ("Rainbow," "Whiskey"). The 2-LP title was produced by band historian Rob Bleetstein and contains liner notes penned by Ken Babbs last November. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Highly-anticipated returns anchor a trio of new releases

Amazing returns from Chris Hillman and Shania Twain as well as a special disc teaming artists from Southern California and Ireland are recommended.

Artist: Chris Hillman
Title: Bidin' My Time (Rounder Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Tom Petty, the Desert Rose Band, the Flying Burrito Brothers
Tell me more: A beautiful and deeply affecting album, Chris Hillman's wonderful Bidin' My Time serves not only as a celebration of the legendary co-founder of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers but as a tribute to the illustrious lineup of guests who appear on the disc. Produced by Tom Petty — who the world lost on Oct. 2, 2017 — Bidin' My Time features singer/multi-instrumentalist Hillman performing songs he co-wrote with Steve Hill as well as songwriting contributions from Sonny Curtis, Nathan G. Barrow, Pete Seeger, Petty, and fellow Byrds members Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. The shimmering "Here She Comes Again" will thrill fans of Hillman's '60s tuneful folk rock with its layers of 12- and 6-string guitar provided by McGuinn and Petty alongside the organ handiwork of Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers fame). "She Don't Care About Time" taps into a similar sonic vein, with John Jorgenson's 12-string electric guitar dancing with Tench's stellar piano play. Assisting Hillman on his first studio album since 2005 are other greats including David Crosby (on harmony vocals on the lovely "Bells of Rhymney"), fiddler Gabs Witcher, drummer Steve Ferrone and bassist Mark Fain. And everywhere the masterful acoustic guitar, banjo and harmony vocals of Herb Pedersen shine. If there was any justice in the world, modern-day commercial country radio would have the album's infectious title track, introspective "Given All I Can See" and tender ballad "Different Rivers" in heavy rotation. Information: rounder.com.

Artist: Shania Twain
Title: Now (Mercury Nashville)
You might like if you enjoy: Shania Twain, Sara Evans
Tell me more: The top-selling female country music of all time, Shania Twain has sold more than 75 million albums. The Canadian singer-songwriter's highly-anticipated return Now delivers on her influential style of blending pop, rock and country music stylings together in songs that simultaneously celebrate good times, love and life's wide emotional expanse. Her first album in 15 years, "Now" features songs that bristle with modern-day touches and enduring melodies. Chief among the catchy gems are the reggae-tinged "Swinging' With My Eyes Closed," pop-styled "More Fun," rousing "Life's About To Get Good" and dance-minded "You Can't Buy Love." The confessional "Home Now," haunting "Poor Me," hypnotic "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl" and piano-anchored "Soldier" touch on the deeper reaches of Twain's songwriting. "Now" is available as both a standard 12-track album (reviewed here) and as a deluxe edition that includes 16 tracks. Information: ShaniaTwain.com.

Artist: Celsi, Bragg & Maitland
Title: The Road To Glasgow (Steel Derrick Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Anny Celsi, Nelson Bragg, Celtic music
Tell me more: It is fitting with 2017 marking the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love that Los Angeles-based Anny Celsi and Nelson Bragg have teamed up with Dublin's Duncan Maitland (Picturehouse, Pugwash) to release an album that somehow captures that magical time when vocal harmonies, sweet melodies, memorable songs and psychedelic overtones gave birth to the L.A.'s Byrds and London's Fairport Convention. The melodic power pop "Heavenly Day," lovely folk nugget "Own Sweet Time" (one of three live recordings on the disc) and a driving take on Paul Kelly's "To Her Door" and lush Byrds-styled take on Peter Holsapple's "Hollywood Waltz" capture the honest and sweet sound of The Road To Glasgow. Fans of the aforementioned Chris Hillman disc Bidin' My Time will fully appreciate the beauty and performances on The Road To Glasgow. Information: annycelsi.com and steelderrickmusic.com.

Chris Hillman's "Bidin' My Time," produced by Tom Petty, is released to critical praise

The legendary Chris Hillman (The Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas) is back with a new album, and it is produced by fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tom Petty. Here are details on the new album...

Chris Hillman's Bidin' My Time, Produced by Tom Petty,
Inspires Critical Praise

Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen with John Jorgenson On Tour Now

Chris Hillman, a founding member of the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Manassas, and the Desert Rose Band has released Bidin' My Time, his first studio album in more than a decade. The album, which was produced by Tom Petty, has been warmly received by critics who praise the "sharp and ruminative collection of new and old tunes by a musician whose influence far outstrips his fame." Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times observes, "Bidin' My Time contains nods to virtually every phase of Hillman's musical life, with acoustic bluegrass, jangly folk-rock and sweet country-rock that lend a full-circle quality to the project," while the Associated Press' Scott Stroud notes, "Hillman still sounds like a man in his 20s, though he is 72, and the stellar playing behind him gives the album the feel of one last Byrds record."
Bob Mehr's profile of Hillman appears in the new issue of Mojo. He writes, "Bidin' My Timereunites Hillman with Byrds mates Crosby and Roger McGuinn, plus various Heartbreakers. Yet, despite the guest list, it's mostly a spare, stripped-down affair, a perfect distillation of Hillman's sharp craft and quiet brilliance."
No Depression's Henry Carrigan asserts "Bidin' My Time shimmers with beauty, resounds with haunting melodies, and sparkles like a diamond, shining light from every musical facet of [Hillman's] long career," and Glide Magazine's Doug Collette calls it "a virtual tour-de-force."
Writing in AllMusic, Stephen Thomas Erlewine says "It's a cozy sound, one that feels as intimate as a front porch but is delivered with the precision of seasoned pros," and concludes that the album feels "like an understated summation of everything Hillman's accomplished in his long, varied career."
Hillman is currently on tour with his longtime musical partner Herb Pedersen, who acted as the album's executive producer.  The duo is joined by multi-instrumentalist John Jorgenson, a Desert Rose Band alum with whom they frequently work. This leg of the tour, which started last week, included shows in New York City and Boston and will make its way to the west coast before wrapping up in Texas.
