Inbox Update: Brian Wilson biopic 'Love & Mercy,' Charlie Daniels' Volunteer Jam, Mike Flanigin, Rush

Here is a pretty comprehensive roundup of today's music news...

CAPITOL RECORDS TO RELEASE 'MUSIC FROM LOVE & MERCY,'
OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK TO LIONSGATE/ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS/RIVER ROAD'S ACCLAIMED BRIAN WILSON BIOPIC
Global Digital Release:  August 14
Global CD Release:  September 18
Hollywood, California - August 13, 2015- Capitol Records is pleased to announce plans for the global digital and CD release of 'Music From LOVE & MERCY,' the official soundtrack to Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/River Road's acclaimed Brian Wilson biopic starring John Cusack and Paul Dano. Produced by Wilson, the film's Oscar®-winning score composer Atticus Ross, and the film's producer and director, Bill Pohlad, 'Music From LOVE & MERCY''s 13 tracks include "One Kind of Love," a ballad written and recorded by Brian Wilson specifically for the film, original Beach Boys classics, Paul Dano's stirring performance of "God Only Knows" from the film, and original score pieces by Ross.  The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, Friday, August 14, with the CD release to follow on Friday, September 18.
"Atticus' musical work with the film was absolutely brilliant," says Wilson. "Through the score he was able to tastefully capture some of the most joyful and dark moments of my life."
"It was a great privilege to be part of the team that brought 'LOVE & MERCY' to life," says Ross. "Beyond the beautiful and tragic events in Brian Wilson's life, the film is an uncompromising exploration into the creative process of undoubtedly one of the most inventive and sophisticated musical creators to have ever recorded. Bill Pohlad's unique vision celebrates that process with an insight and energy that inspired us all to reach for the best of our own creative abilities. In terms of the musical story telling it seemed essential to keep Brian ever-present and it's a testament to both his generosity and ongoing imagination that he allowed unprecedented access to his archive to achieve that goal."
"Mr. Pohlad's deft narrative sense and careful visual style are complemented by the work of  Atticus Ross, whose sonic collages - 'score' doesn't quite do justice to his achievement - take us deeper inside a musical mind than we might have thought possible. 'LOVE & MERCY' doesn't claim to solve the mystery of Brian Wilson, but it succeeds beyond all expectation in making you hear where he was coming from." - A.O. Scott, The New York Times (June 4, 2015)
Hailed by critics as a triumph of the biopic film genre, 'LOVE & MERCY' presents an unconventional portrait of Wilson, the legendary singer, songwriter, producer and co-founder of one of the world's most successful and beloved bands of all-time, The Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalog of Wilson's music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon, whose success came at extraordinary personal cost. 'LOVE & MERCY' stars Cusack and Dano as Wilson at different points of his life and career, with co-stars Paul Giamatti as Dr. Eugene Landy and Elizabeth Banks as Wilson's wife, Melinda.
Brian Wilson is one of popular music's most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. For more than half a century, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from his imagination into glorious song. Wilson brings this ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.
Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966's Pet Soundsis universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.  Wilson's innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," and the No. 1 smash "Good Vibrations" made The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s.
Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 11of his own albums to date, including his acclaimed 'No Pier Pressure,' released by Capitol Records in April. Wilson's 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the 1960s, Brian Wilson Presents... SMiLE, earned his first GRAMMY® for a recording, which was followed by his second GRAMMY® win for producing The Beach Boys' universally hailed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions. With his own band, Wilson has performed major, sold-out international tours in recent years, and he celebrated The Beach Boys' 50th anniversary in 2012 with an international tour and acclaimed studio album, That's Why God Made The Radio.
Brian Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a U.K. Music Hall of Fame inductee.  As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

CHARLIE DANIELS VOLUNTEER JAM STUNS WITH BOMBSHELL SURPRISE PERFORMANCES BY ERIC CHURCH, LYNYRD SKYNYRD AND BLACKBERRY SMOKE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 13, 2015) – A sold-out crowd of concert-goers went wild Wednesday night (Aug. 12, 2015) at the 40th Anniversary celebration of the legendary Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam, presented by Copperweld, at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena as seven-time GRAMMY-nominee country star Eric Church, iconic Southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Blackberry Smoke made bombshell, unannounced appearances to honor U.S. military members and veterans.

Making waves in the music world in recent years with their blend of Southern Rock and country, Blackberry Smoke was the first surprise of the night. In the 9:00 hour, country mega-star, Eric Church, busted out on the stage in the midst of Daniels’ crowd-pleasing performance of “In America,” joining Daniels for an electrifying duet. Though both Daniels and Church hail from the state of North Carolina, the two had never shared the stage before – giving the crowd the chance to witness a magnetic inaugural moment.

Ensuring the Jam stayed enthralling to the very end, Lynyrd Skynyrd made their rip-roaring entrance at 11:30 p.m. CT and closed out the final hour of the historically boundless extravaganza with their iconic hits like "Simple Man," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," "Gimme Three Steps,"and more.

Jamey Johnson also showed up late in the event, surprising concert-goers, yet again.
The four surprise guests joined billed acts: The Charlie Daniels Band, Ted Nugent, Trace Adkins, Alabama, Terri Clark, Billy Ray Cyrus, Colt Ford, The Grascals, Lee Greenwood, The Kentucky Headhunters, Tracy Lawrence, The Oak Ridge Boys, Ryan Weaver, Wynonna, Craig Morgan, Lee Roy Parnell, Billy Dean, Michael W. Smith, Travis Tritt, Phil Vassar, Montgomery Gentry and Blackberry Smoke, for a jam-packed line-up to remember.

Former Blackhawk pilot, U.S. veteran and rising country star, Ryan Weaver, evoked arguably the most emotional applause of the night with a performance and moving video tribute to his brother and brother-in-law, both lost in combat in the War on Iraq.
A benefit for U.S. Military veterans and their families, the 40th Anniversary Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam raised hundreds of thousands in proceeds for the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, The Journey Home Project. It was co-founded by Daniels and his manager David Corlew, seeks to connect donors with veterans’ organizations that do the most good in meeting the health care, education and career needs of military servicemen and women and their families. Additional concert proceeds will benefit the Nashville Predators Foundation.

The Volunteer Jam's title sponsor, Henry Repeating Arms, donated a $200,000 check on-stage to The Journey Home Project. Anthony Imperato, President of Henry Repeating Arms, said, "Although we can never repay them [U.S. Military servicemen and women] what they have done for us, Henry's sponsorship of the Volunteer Jam and donation to The Journey Home Project is a small token of our gratitude."

Since 1974, Daniels has commissioned his musical friends and peers to come together on a “volunteer” basis to hang out, “jam” together, and entertain crowds in an unconventional, laid-back fashion unknown to any other concert event -- all while dedicating concert proceeds to worthy causes.
Having founded the “Volunteer Jam” concept in 1974 as a “homecoming,” event for music peers to gather in Nashville after celebrating their first hometown sellout concert, Daniels and The Charlie Daniels Band have grown the concept from its early days at the War Memorial Auditorium to the Starwood Amphitheater, to its first year at Music City’s Bridgestone Arena– it’s largest setting to-date.
The 40th Anniversary Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam was co-hosted by conservative talk show host, Sean Hannity, and SiriusXM “The Highway” host, Storme Warren.

It is promoted in partnership with 95.5 FM Nash ICON, WSM-AM, and Henry Repeating Arms. It is presented by Copperweld and produced by David Corlew & Associates in association with Outback Concerts.

With the help of engineer Jim Eno (drummer of Spoon), Mike Flanigin is excited to be releasing his first solo album. Collaborating with Flanigin on the LP are Gary Clark Jr., Gibbons,Alejandro EscovedoJimmie Vaughan, the late Reverend Gean West and Kat Edmonson. Furthermore, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Clem Burke of Blondie also appears on the release along with legendary jazz musician Bob Malach (Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand) playing horns and Stephen Barber (Keith Richards, Willie Nelson) composing strings and horn arrangements.

“These artists are all personal heroes of mine,” says Flanigin, “I wrote the songs with each of them in mind to perform them. Luckily, they are all personal friends too.” The album was created in six different studios and throughout four states, which included a stop at Avatar Studios in New York for mixing. Grammy Award-winner Garvin Lurssen (T-Bone Burnett, Eric Clapton and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss) mastered the album.

“I worked at a pawnshop growing up, so I was around instruments, but I didn’t know anyone who was a musician really, I certainly wasn’t,” Flanigin explains, “I didn’t step on a stage until I was 25.” Flanigin’s first gig was at a Holiday Inn in Dallas. In the years that followed, he toured with The Red Devils, played in the famous Antone’s house band in Austin and did an eight-year residency at The Continental Club Gallery playing organ. During this residency, Flanigin met and began to play with Gibbons and Vaughan and later went on to play as a featured guest with ZZ Top on their Live At Montreux 2013 DVD, filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival. “When I was a kid, the first concert I ever saw was ZZ Top and The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Jimmie Vaughan’s band) at The Cotton Bowl,” says Flanigin, “I never thought I’d meet those guys, much less play and record with them. Eric Clapton saw me once and told me he liked the way I played. That kind of stuff never entered my mind when I was working at the pawnshop.”

Flanigin later played with Vaughan at The Eric Clapton Crossroads Festival in 2013, which was recorded and released on DVD. “To to be honest, I still can’t believe all the things that have happened to me,” says Flanigin of his journey. “I’m the last guy I would have guessed would become a musician.  It all just kind of happened somehow. “

Fan Photo Opportunities with Neil Peart’s Iconic Hockey Drum Kit Display on R40 Live Anniversary Tour & Signed Memorabilia Auction on eBay Offered Fans Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunities to Own a Piece of Rock History

OXNARD, CA (August 13th, 2015)—Fans of iconic Canadian rock band Rush recently enjoyed some unique opportunities to own a piece of the band’s history – all to benefit cancer research. In exchange for a small donation, fans posed for pictures behind legendary drummer Neil Peart’s one-of-a-kind, Collector’s Series® Drum Workshop (DW) hockey-themed drumset on select dates of the band’s highly successful R40 Live Anniversary Tour. In addition, fans were able to bid on museum-worthy, autographed Rush memorabilia on eBay including a Sabian Paragon Cymbal and a limited edition, DW R40 Icon Snare – both of which were autographed by Rush. Donations from the hockey kit photo opportunities and the auction items raised a total of $25,547.28 CDN to benefit Rush drummer, Neil Peart’s charity of choice The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto. Additional sponsors included The Sports Network (TSN) and Hockey Hall of Fame.

These fundraising efforts -- which included the creativity and hard work of several companies in order to bring to fruition -- were very important to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Not only did they bring a substantial amount of funding for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, but it took our vision of conquering cancer in our lifetime to thousands of Rush fans. Sincere thanks to all those involved with the creation and execution of this promotion, and to all the Rush fans who contributed to our work by getting a great souvenir photo, or by bidding on the Rush items. Special thanks to Neil Peart and his bandmates for their extreme generosity,” said Kevin Shea, director of public relations, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
This marks the second time Peart’s iconic DW “Hockey Kit” has been used to raise money for cancer research. Created for Peart in DW’s custom shop in 2009, it featured airbrushed, lacquer graphics of 30 NHL logos and custom, ice blue hardware. The kit was seen weekly by millions of hockey fans in the opening sequence of “Hockey Night in Canada” on TSN and used in the recording of Peart’s percussion-focused rendition of The Hockey Theme which was sold on iTunes with a portion of proceeds benefittingHockey Fights Cancer.
Since 2010, the Peart’s legendary DW “Hockey Kit” has been displayed in the Hockey Hall of Fame alongside the Stanley Cup. After the conclusion of the Rush R40 tour, the kit will make its final stop in Calgary, where it will permanently reside at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, and join over 2,000 artifacts in NMC’s collection, which represent the history of music technology and tell the story of music in Canada.
