Bruce Springsteen to Release New Studio Album 'High Hopes' on January 14

Bruce Springsteen's new album 'High Hopes' has been set for January 14, 2014 release on Columbia Records.  High Hopes finds Springsteen in a number of different musical settings, and includes the members of the E Street Band as well as guitarist Tom Morello and many additional players. The album was recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City and marks Springsteen's 18th studio album.

The High Hopes album packaging includes Springsteen's own liner notes that detail the album's evolution (full text of the liner notes is below).

Morello joined Springsteen and the E Street Band on tour in Australia in March, 2013 (sitting in for Steve Van Zandt), and became, as Springsteen says, "my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level." Besides his guitar playing on the album, Morello also duets with Springsteen on "The Ghost of Tom Joad." Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011, and Danny Federici, who passed away in 2008, also appear on several songs of what Springsteen calls "some of our best unreleased material from the past decade."

Bruce Springsteen's 'High Hopes' Liner Notes

I was working on a record of some of our best unreleased material from the past decade when Tom Morello (sitting in for Steve during the Australian leg of our tour) suggested we ought to add "High Hopes" to our live set. I had cut "High Hopes," a song by Tim Scott McConnell of the LA based Havalinas, in the 90's. We worked it up in our Aussie rehearsals and Tom then proceeded to burn the house down with it. We re-cut it mid tour at Studios 301 in Sydney along with "Just Like Fire Would," a song from one of my favorite early Australian punk bands, The Saints (check out "I'm Stranded"). Tom and his guitar became my muse, pushing the rest of this project to another level. Thanks for the inspiration Tom.

Some of these songs, "American Skin" and "Ghost of Tom Joad," you'll be familiar with from our live versions. I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording. "The Wall" is something I'd played on stage a few times and remains very close to my heart. The title and idea were Joe Grushecky's, then the song appeared after Patti and I made a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It was inspired by my memories of Walter Cichon. Walter was one of the great early Jersey Shore rockers, who along with his brother Ray (one of my early guitar mentors) led the "Motifs". The Motifs were a local rock band who were always a head above everybody else. Raw, sexy and rebellious, they were the heroes you aspired to be. But these were heroes you could touch, speak to, and go to with your musical inquiries. Cool, but always accessible, they were an inspiration to me, and many young working musicians in 1960's central New Jersey. Though my character in "The Wall" is a Marine, Walter was actually in the Army, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry. He was the first person I ever stood in the presence of who was filled with the mystique of the true rock star. Walter went missing in action in Vietnam in March 1968. He still performs somewhat regularly in my mind, the way he stood, dressed, held the tambourine, the casual cool, the freeness. The man who by his attitude, his walk said "you can defy all this, all of what's here, all of what you've been taught, taught to fear, to love and you'll still be alright." His was a terrible loss to us, his loved ones and the local music scene. I still miss him.

This is music I always felt needed to be released. From the gangsters of "Harry's Place," the ill-prepared roomies on "Frankie Fell In Love" (shades of Steve and I bumming together in our Asbury Park apartment) the travelers in the wasteland of "Hunter Of Invisible Game," to the soldier and his visiting friend in "The Wall", I felt they all deserved a home and a hearing. The date, unveiled today, is Saturday 22 March 2014.

This special Adelaide show continues the exhilarating celebration of the band’s five decades, with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Woods bringing their iconic music and ground-breaking stage shows to audiences around the globe.

Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-1974, will be a special guest for this concert.

The stage design for this show includes a massive ramp, over 30 metres long, which extends right into the audience allowing the Stones to interact directly with their audience.  Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show.

This is easily going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stage and production Adelaide has ever seen with nearly 60 trucks required for all the staging and production. It will be the only show in Australia featuring this level of outdoor production.

The Rolling Stones were recently crowned the ‘Best Live Band” at the NME Awards in London, and over the past 12 months have thrilled fans with the release of a ground-breaking new documentary, ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, a greatest hits collection, ‘GRRR!’, a massive US tour and a ground-breaking, back to back, sold out set of two historic Hyde Park concerts in the UK in front of 120,000, which are chronicled in a new concert film ‘Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live’.

EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TOUR BACK IN MARCH 2014 WITH ALL STAR LINE-UP

The eighth edition of the celebrated Experience Hendrix Tour is set to launch in March 2014.  These special event performances represent an ongoing tribute to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix.  Presented by BandFuse: Rock Legends, the month long tour, brings together a diverse group of musical greats paying homage to the abiding genius of Jimi Hendrix.  This year’s line-up ranges from metal legend Zakk Wylde [Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society], blues icon Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the innovative Dweezil Zappa, Los Lobos’ stalwarts Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo, left-handed blues rocker Eric Gales, Texas guitar gods Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Johnson, funk legend Bootsy Collins,   Mato Nanji [Indigenous], and, from Serbia by way of Memphis, Ana Popovic.  The rhythm section, as always, includes bassist Billy Cox, the only player, apart from Jimi Hendrix himself, who was part of both the Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Chris Layton, the drummer who, along with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, was a founder of Double Trouble.

It’s appropriate that BandFuse: Rock Legends is presenting the tour in light of it being named “The Best Music Video Game on the Market” by Guitar World Magazine. BandFuse: Rock Legends seamlessly connects real guitars, basses and microphones to game consoles, empowering players to jam using authentic animated tablature to a fully unlocked library of hit songs from rock to metal and punk to funk. Among the game’s mentors are such noted artists as Zakk Wylde and Bootsy Collins who are performing on the Experience Hendrix Tour as well as Slash, George Lynch, Mike Ness, Alexi Laiho, Zoltan Bathory and Jason Hook.

The tour officially begins in Dallas at the Verizon Theater on March 11 and, thereafter roars through the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions with stops in St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Washington and Detroit with more than 20 anticipated concert dates.

In terms of format, the tour offers multiple opportunities for performers and audiences to witness unique collaborations among the participating artists such as Dweezil Zappa with Billy Cox, Buddy Guy with Jonny Lang, Zakk Wylde with Chris Layton and will highlight these artists and the others performing their favorite Hendrix signature songs including “Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix outings, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates, making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Joe Satriani, Hubert Sumlin, Steve Vai, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Carlos Santana, Robby Krieger, and others. 

This year's Experience Hendrix Tour is the focus of the Jimi Hendrix Guitar Competition, which was just announced last week. The competition, backed by Sony Music's Legacy Recordings, IK Multimedia, Talenthouse along with Experience Hendrix, LLC offers entrants a chance to win a performing slot on one of the tour dates next year as well as a cash prize plus gear.  Contestants are invited to submit a video of their performance of a Jimi Hendrix track with the winner selected by a team of judges including Janie Hendrix, producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, Guitar World editor Brad Tolinski and musician Dave Stewart.

Billy Cox, the legendary bassist whose relationship with Jimi Hendrix and his music dates back to the early 1960s when the two met while serving in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. The two bonded over their love of music and would later work together backing R&B acts on the “chitlin’ circuit.”  They reunited when Cox was recruited to be part of the Jimi Hendrix Band of   as well as the ultimate iteration of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, performing at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox, who has been part of all previous Experience Hendrix tours, notes, "It's always a great thrill and honor for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now just as it was in the 1960s.  The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is and is just wonderful that we’ve continued to get an infusion of new, very enthusiastic artists to participate and are able to offer the most wide-ranging Jimi Hendrix-related repertoire possible."

Apart, of course, from Billy Cox, Buddy Guy holds the distinction of having actually played with Jimi Hendrix. The two first met in 1967 and Guy remembers, “We became pretty close from that night on and every time I went through New York or somewhere he would show up and we would jam together. That’s still kind of happening on the Experience Hendrix Tour.”

Dweezil Zappa commented, "I've always been a great admirer of Jimi Hendrix. My dad told me some great stories about playing with him. Jimi's ability to express himself so completely with an electric guitar is very inspiring to me. “There was an authentic expression of his personality in the music. And that rings true to every generation. He wasn't following trends. His playing was soulful and exciting and surprising.”

Shepherd, a veteran of most of the Experience Hendrix tours remarked, “Jimi Hendrix’s music has really inspired me to push the limits of my own music. He didn’t observe any boundaries musically. He was an amazing player and a tremendous showman so I incorporated some of his showmanship in what I do.”  As far as having been part of the Experience Hendrix touring phenomenon, Shepherd noted, “It touches you on the inside and gets you fired up."

The tour’s presence has been made known on national TV with Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo performing classic Hendrix on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; Jonny Lang on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Kenny Wayne Shepherd playing Jimi Hendrix's actual Woodstock guitar on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. 

Massively popular with fans and critics alike, an earlier edition of the Experience Hendrix tour inspired Larry Rodgers of the Arizona Republic to rave, "It was encouraging to see fans of all ages, from teens to baby boomers who witnessed Hendrix's career launch firsthand, in the Mesa crowd. The show and that crowd made it clear that Hendrix's magical music will never die." 

Ben Wener Orange County Register characterized the show as "an all-star array of modern and legendary guitar greats in a nearly three-hour tribute to the most innovative virtuoso who ever touched six strings. It helped, of course, that the performances were uniformly strong, even inspired, an Electric Church encounter that one likes to think would have made Jimi proud."

Jeff Miers of Buffalo News wrote,  "The nearly three-hour show moved from peak to peak, as varying configurations of musicians gathered to explore the Hendrix canon."

Scott Mervis, in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, observed, “In the end, amidst all the star power on stage, the message reaffirmed in every lick, riff and warped melody was the wild and true genius of Jimi Hendrix.”

Dan Durchholz, covering the tour for the St. Louis Post Dispatch marveled at how "...the Experience Hendrix tour showed just how pervasive (Hendrix's) influence continues to be. The three-hour show featured an all-star lineup from a variety of musical traditions, united by a collective debt to the iconic artist's songs, showmanship and trailblazing technique. Despite its creator's demise decades ago, Hendrix's music is still alive and well.”

I attended the third and final day of the May 1983 US Festival held at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino. It was the day I first caught U2 and was immediately blown away, becoming a big fan of the Irish rockers. It was a true warm-up for my future Coachellafest experiences, especially because of the intense heat and endurance skills to stand all day (and night).

The US Festival (US is an acronym for "Unite Us In Song") held on Memorial Day of 1983 was a massive three-day celebration of music and culture sponsored by Steve Wozniak, formerly of Apple Computer. Wozniak financed the entire thing himself (approx. 10 million dollars), and his motivation quoted as "to throw a big party in the middle of nowhere" is quite an understatement. This festival was a follow up to 1982 Labor Day inaugural Us Festival events. The festivals were intended to be the celebration of evolving technologies; a marriage of music, computers, television and people.

Us Festival 1983: Days 1 - 3 includes the 3 days of New Wave, Heavy Metal and Rock in 1983 with performances from U2, the Clash, Judas Priest, Stevie Nicks, Scorpions, INXS, Men at Work, Stray Cats, Triumph, Missing Persons and more. This includes the legendary U2 performance of Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Clash's final performance with Mick Jones, a seminal performance for INXS in the US, and many other landmark moments in music history. It is estimated that over 670,000 fans attended.

The festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Also making a debut were installations of "out-door rain", perforated pvc nozzles that sprayed water to fight the fierce hundred-degree heat.

The US Festival interest remains strong 30 years later in pop culture with mentions in The Simpsons, Malcom In The Middle, Dharma & Greg and other popular TV shows. US Festival 1983 is produced by Icon Television Music, Inc. and Unuson Corporation with the cooperation of Steve Wozniak. This is the only Unuson sanctioned official release of US Festival 1983 at iTunes and on DVD.

(Nov. 14, 2013) — To commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of the most historic moments in music and television, The Recording Academy^®, AEG Ehrlich Ventures and CBS will present "The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY^® Salute To The Beatles." The primetime entertainment special will celebrate the remarkable legacy of the seven-time GRAMMY-winning group and their groundbreaking first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The two-hour show will tape on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, the day after the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards^®, and will be broadcast in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, from 8 – 10 p.m. ET/PT — exactly 50 years to the day, date, and time of the original event. "The Night That Changed America: A GRAMMY Salute To The Beatles" will feature today's top artists covering songs performed by the Fab Four that momentous evening in 1964 and Beatles songs through the years, and will include footage from that landmark Sunday evening, as well as other archival material. In addition, various presenters will help highlight and contextualize the musical, cultural and historical impact of the group and this legendary performance.

The Beatles' first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" is one of the most watched television events ever — with 74 million people tuning in to watch the group perform five songs during the variety hour. It is considered by many historians and critics as one of the most important moments in music and television.

"The Beatles are one of music's most iconic groups, who won their first two GRAMMYs, including one for Best New Artist, in 1964 — the same year they took America by storm," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. On December 15th, the show will hold a special celebration honoring the legacy of music's most beloved band the Beatles, with an extraordinary show featuring surprise guests from throughout their three-decade history. The show airs every Sunday morning, with your host Chris Carter, on Los Angeles radio station 95.5FM KLOS from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Breakfast with the Beatles "...often imitated, never duplicated..." Breakfast with the Beatles debuted on the air in December 1983 on, the now defunct, Los Angeles radio station KMET with revered DJ Deirdre O'Donoghue behind the mic. In 1987, the show moved to KNX-FM before being picking up again at KLSX-FM where O'Donoghue hosted the show until her untimely passing in January 2001.  Following a succession of interim hosts, in late 2001 Breakfast with the Beatles listeners held an online vote ultimately selecting disc jockey and music/film producer Chris Carter as the shows' new and current host. During his decade plus tenure, Carter dug in and found his voice, expanding the show's length to three hours of Beatles hits, hard to find rarities, outtakes, and solo recordings. He included in-depth, behind-the-scenes, short stories about the music, and the introduction of in-studio guests and musical performances.
