| | Prestigious ambient electronic project The Album Leaf announced they will release their new LP, One Day XX, on September 17, 2021. The record is a 20th-anniversary edition rework of their career-launching record, One Day I’ll Be On Time. When approaching the rework, The Album Leaf creator Jimmy LaValle brought in longtime collaborator James McAlister (Taylor Swift, Sufjan Stevens, The National) and members of his live band to help re-imagine every arrangement with what he knows now as a composer and performer, celebrating the songs from a different vantage, with technical prowess and the emotional clarity that time and distance can afford.
Today, he shares the reworked edition of his beloved single, “Vermillion,” now heightened by an agile and robust full-band arrangement. LaValle’s mission was to embody where he’s taken “Vermillion” on stage over the years, in collaboration with the musicians in his live band: David LeBleu (drums), Brad Lee (bass, trumpet), and Matt Resovich (violin). He adds, “Vermillion is a staple song in all of my shows. For the rework, I wanted to capture what it’s become after playing it live for so many years (20) it has become a whole different beast from when I first recorded it. I’d always wanted to feature Matt Resovich’s violin work, but also wanted to capture the sound of the full band’s performance. Dave LeBleu tracked his drums remotely in Gainesville, Brad Lee tracked bass in (San Diego) I tracked my Rhodes Piano at my studio in Los Angeles, and Matt Resovich (Joshua Tree) did the same for his Violin. James and I took these tracks to build a new version with new life for this rework.”

With the rework, LaValle arrived at an experiment that spoke to artistic ingenuity and progression. “My first thought was, ‘oh this song is on guitar, let’s do it on the synth, or this song is on the Rhodes, let’s do it on something else, but more than that, I wanted to give these songs a new sense of space and depth, to see how far we could go and wide we could get.”
In 2001, One Day I’ll Be On Time propelled The Album Leaf from Jimmy LaValle’s part-time solo project to a full-fledged live band touring with Sigur Rós (whose lead singer Jónsi just happened to stumble upon in it a record store in Iceland). LaValle, who came up in the late ‘90s San Diego music scene playing in hardcore bands and as a founding member of instrumental rock band Tristeza, found himself at a crossroads with his commitments. After receiving a modest label advance for a solo project, he created a self-recording starter setup, building out the sound with occasional studio access from his day job at a jingle house. The music that emerged — vivid, rhythmic, soaring instrumentals guided by lines of guitar and Rhodes — not only set the path for The Album Leaf over the next two decades of acclaimed releases (for Sub Pop, City Slang, and others), it became a touchstone for the next generation's wave of melodic and meditative electro-organic music.

Los Angeles, CA – June 22, 2021 – On July 16, Petrol/UMe will launch Original Sin - The 7 Sins featuring the songs and music of INXS on the Veeps streaming platform. Original Sin is a modern-day love story about a broken-hearted heroine and her journey through the seven sins and the quest towards the virtue of Hope. The music of the legendary global rock band INXS seamlessly accompanies the film, and ultimately, the young heroine finds true love while the world heals with her. Directed by Amy Tinkham (https://www.amytinkham.com) and championed by the founder of Petrol Records and Executive Producer Chris "CM" Murphy before his passing earlier this year, Original Sin is the last project and passion that CM was working on during his final days. The film is loosely based on and inspired by celebrated Italian writer Dante Alighieri's Inferno and the spiritual journey through the Seven Sins of Purgatory — pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. The Original Sin short film reimagines Dante's tale through the eyes of Jane, a 21st-century heroine isolated during the recent pandemic, who continues to search for love and the means to validate her soul.
"I was so honored to be asked by the legendary Chris Murphy to explore telling a story through INXS music, but was also overwhelmed with how to start because it is such an iconic and incredible catalog," said Amy Tinkham. "So instead, I sat with the music for many, many weeks and let it tell me a story. It was an out-of-body experience actually because it feels more like the songs and the times we are living in, wrote this film than anything I consciously tried to do."
Original Sin reflects the world's current state of affairs and the universal quest for reconnection and romance. The short film is harmoniously intertwined with the symbolically poetic music of rock icons, INXS. The entire film threads together the epic tale of all seven sins by way of a bacchanalia of color, sound, imagery, and movement. The heroine's journey through the seven sins, ultimately finding love with each other, and together, their love heals them both as well as the world around them. Framed with minimal narration, the unscripted short film runs close to 26 minutes and is a story of isolation and love, inspired by the songs and music of INXS, as a young woman is catapulted through the 7 SINS to find true love and heal her heart.

Original Sin stars notable actress/dancer Autumn Miller who shot to fame as a dance sensation in her role in "Bad Liar" from Imagine Dragons' and Trevor Jackson, who is a true triple threat, singer/songwriter, producer, and actor (Superfly, Grown-ish, American Crime). Both Miller and Jackson personify the unyielding spirit of those among us who are searching for love and redemption in a time fraught with much personal and social peril. Fabrice Calmels, the ballet prodigy who entered the Paris Opera Ballet at age 11 and is currently dancing with Chicago's Joffrey Ballet, embodies each of the sins within his stunning performance as the "Angel" in the film.
The accompanying 13-song soundtrack — the first-ever INXS-specific project between Petrol and UMe, will also be available July 16 and features a wealth of INXS-related material, including some dramatic reworkings and reinterpretations of some of the band's most iconic tracks, including Australian female chanteuse George Alice's edgy take on "Suicide Blonde," and international electropop sensation Loane's otherworldly French lead vocals on "Mystify." Other soundtrack highlights include Michael Hutchence's sultry, Spanish-flavored cover of Eric Burdon & War's 1970 collaborative classic "Spill The Wine," Tricky's rapid-fire rumination on "Mediate," the sultry vocals of Sweden's Ida Redig on "Taste It" and "Kill The Pain" and Trevor Jackson's pleadingly personal "Need You Tonight." GRAMMY Award-winning Petrol – INXS Executive Music Producer Giles Martin collaborated with Amy, developing the original concept. To celebrate this in 2021, GdN are releasing Ashford International - a new compilation this time collecting together selected releases from the past few years as well as some new/future material and rarities, focusing on some of the standalone singles, non-album and digital-only releases, alongside new and unreleased tracks previewing what’s to come from the label later in 2021/22.
There’s plenty for the curious newcomer to Gare du Nord, and enough new/rare stuff to satisfy the already-completist: from Simon Klein’s opener which sounds like it could have been co-written by all four solo Beatles, through 70-odd minutes and 23 tracks of pop, atmosphere, indie, electronica, darkness and wry humour, and ending up at District Repair Depot’s final, Syd Barrett-tinged, note of sunlight and optimism, the Gare du Nord crowd show themselves to be quite a gang when they come at you all at once, like this.

July 13, 2021: Today, Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Paula Cole announced a run of US tour dates. Following the release of her acclaimed album American Quilt, the Grammy-winning songwriter and producer is embarking on a 23-date tour, beginning on August 8 at Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and concluding at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, Maine on November 18. Twelve evenings will be a double bill with songwriter Madeleine Peyroux. Tickets are currently available for purchase here.

With a musical catalog defined by honest and deeply personal lyrics carried by her powerful, radiant voice, Cole has always had a gift for discerning the underlying humanity in stories from her own life as well as those around her, and channeling those emotional elements into captivating music. On American Quilt, Cole applies this natural insight to American history and musical roots traditions by interpreting a selection of classic songs – each of which provide an entry point for rediscovering the overlooked stories and figures that populate America’s interwoven cultural lineage.
The album was produced by Cole, who was the first woman nominated (without collaborators) as Producer of the Year at the 1997 Grammy awards. She garnered a total of seven Grammy nominations that year and won “Best New Artist” for her second album and major-label debut, This Fire, with its timeless hits, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and “I Don’t Want to Wait” (later the theme song for hit TV series Dawson’s Creek). Today, as a visiting scholar at Berklee College of Music, Cole tells “all my female students, ‘Start thinking like a producer, think about how you want the whole track to sound, be a voice.’”
“Together these songs make an American Quilt,” says Cole, “a patchwork of heritage, a stitched-together-history of culture both painful and beautiful. I hope the listener will step inside the canoe and float down the Missouri River of their mind. I hope they will hear the gospel of the country, and taste the liquor in the speakeasies. I hope they will feel the freedom in the jazz of the cities, heed the call to morality in the spirituality of a day’s hard work, and the call to the Great Beyond from the Appalachians.”
As on previous albums, Cole was joined by a longtime “family” of musicians, including esteemed drummer Jay Bellerose and guitarist Kevin Barry, collaborators since the trio’s days at Berklee. American Quilt follows 2019’s acclaimed album of originals, Revolution, deemed by PopMatters as “an exceptional piece of work, a timely reminder of how soulful and perceptive a writer and singer Cole is and has always been.”
