Beloved living blues rock legend Buddy Guy has just been added to the final stop on the Experience Hendrix Tour. The tour itself starts on March 11 with a date in Cincinnati, Ohio and will make its final stop in Atlanta, GA on April 12. I have been able to catch the Experience Hendrix event several times in the past and it's fantastic. In October 2014, Guy headlined the memorable date I caught at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. 2019 Experience Hendrix Tour w/ Billy Cox, Joe Satriani, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Johnson, more!

Super exciting news with the announcement that the Experience Hendrix Tour will be back in 2019! Read my glowing review of the Experience Hendrix tour stop on Oct. 10, 2014 at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles here. I first caught the Experience Hendrix Tour in Dana Point in May 2011; read a review co-written with Ben Wener of that event here.

Experience Hendrix Tour to return in 2019 with Billy Cox, Joe Satriani, Dweezil Zappa, Eric Johnson and others!

2019 MARCH/APRIL TOUR WILL BE THE BIGGEST CELEBRATION TO DATE

The Experience Hendrix Tour, the critically acclaimed multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s musical genius is returning in 2019 with its biggest ever tour--30 dates through the East Coast, South and Midwest. What began as a single show tribute at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2000 has blossomed into a full-fledged concert experience that has thrilled countless fans across the US.  The tour presents a host of great artists collaborating and interpreting Hendrix’s legendary songs as part of a powerhouse, three hour concert experience.

This latest edition of the much anticipated tour once again emphasizes the influence Hendrix has made on a diverse group of artists.  The concerts will bring together artists as disparate as guitar wizard Joe Satriani, blues great Taj Mahal, Ernie Isley and Dweezil Zappa.  Megadeath’s Dave Mustaine will make his Experience Hendrix Tour debut while mainstays such as Billy Cox, Jonny Lang, and Eric Johnson will also be on board for the expedition. The Experience Hendrix Tour offers fans a rare opportunity to see many highly regarded players performing together in a unique setting.

15-time Grammy Award nominee Joe Satriani will make his long-awaited return when the tour kicks off March 3 kickoff in Pompano Beach, FL. Notable for being the biggest-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time, Satriani came to the forefront with the release of his 1987 solo album Surfing with the Alien. He has worked with Mick Jagger, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult and the fabled Spinal Tap and is a member of rock super group Chickenfoot. In keeping with the spirit of the Experience Hendrix Tour, Satriani has formed an all star trio especially for the occasion, calling upon bassist and vocalist dUg Pinnick from King’s X, and prolific sideman Kenny Aronoff on drums to serve as his rhythm section.
Satriani commented, "The Experience Hendrix Tours are always so much fun. The camaraderie between all the musicians on the show is magical. I’m so excited to play some deep Hendrix tracks in a power trio setting with dUg Pinnick and Kenny Aronoff!!!”

Originally the lead guitarist for Metallica, Dave Mustaine next founded Megadeth in 1983 and the group has earned a loyal, worldwide following.  The Southern California native can be considered an architect of the speed metal movement, which is one of many branches on the family tree of heavy, guitar-based music that can be traced back to Jimi Hendrix. With five platinum albums and one multi-platinum album under his belt, Mustaine and his sound are institutions in the rock world. The 2019 Experience Hendrix Tour will be his first.
Dave Mustaine expressed his excitement about being part of the tour. “Jimi Hendrix. The name that comes to my mind as one the ‘Premiere American Guitarists Of All Time.’ An Innovator, and legendary musician, I am beyond honored to do my part in this tribute to the immortal Jimi Hendrix, and want to thank [EH Tour producer] John McDermott for inviting me to play along such mind-blowing guitarists as Joe Satriani, and a personal favorite of mine, Eric Johnson. See you there!”

Also hitting the road this time around will be Billy Cox, bassist for both Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Cox has been the backbone of the tour since its inception, providing a spiritual connection between the past and present. Two other artists who enjoyed friendships with Hendrix will also take part.  Blues legend Taj Mahal and guitar Ernie Isley each make a welcome return to the tour, as does the dynamic guitar and vocalist Jonny Lang, the legendary Eric Johnson, Cesar Rosas & David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, drummer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Chris Layton of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble fame as well as Calvin Cooke and Chuck Campbell, the “Sacred Steel” slide guitar masters known as The Slide Brothers, Mato Nanji of Indigenous and Henri Brown
"The tour is more than a series of concerts," said Janie Hendrix, CEO of  Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. “It's a celebration of a man whose amazing gift changed the face of music and informed an entire culture. His influences were varied and diverse. And this year we’re shining a light on that diversity with artists who represent it across cultures and who also share a love for Jimi and his music. It’s exciting to be able to honor Jimi’s enduring legacy in this way.”

The 2019 Experience Hendrix tour dovetails with the release this November 9 release of the Deluxe Edition box set of Electric Ladyland from Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hendrix’s masterpiece.  It will be available as as either a 3CD/1 Blu-ray set or a 6LP/1 Blu-ray set, remastered by Bernie Grundman and including Electric Ladyland: The Early Takes, which presents demos and studio outtakes from this period in Hendrix’s career, plus a new 5.1 surround sound mix of the entire original album by Hendrix’s original engineer Eddie Kramer. Also included is Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At the Hollywood Bowl 9/14/68 well as the feature length documentary At Last… The Beginning: The Making of Electric Ladyland.

It has also been announced that every pair of tickets purchased online for select Experience Hendrix Tour dates will come with a physical CD copy of Both Sides of the Sky. Heralded by Relix as “both a historically valuable document . . . and a treat musically,” Both Sides of the Sky is the third volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in Jimi Hendrix’s archive.

The 2019 Experience Hendrix Tour is sponsored by Youcisian, the popular online music instruction platform, along with Fender Musical Instruments, Dunlop, Hal Leonard, and Axe Heaven.

New Jimi Hendrix "Both Sides of the Sky" out today - watch "Lover Man" music video

NEW JIMI HENDRIX ALBUM BOTH SIDES OF THE SKY OUT NOW – WATCH “LOVER MAN” MUSIC VIDEO

March 9 – Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings have released Jimi Hendrix’s new album Both Sides of the Sky today on CD, digital, and as a numbered 180-gram audiophile vinyl 2 LP set. NPR Music recently declared, “No rock figure before or since could breathe fire like Hendrix does, on his beloved well-known albums and on the assortment that is Both Sides of the Sky.” For the occasion, director John Vondracek has created a music video for “Lover Man,” a single from the album.

Watch “Lover Man” video here: http://vevo.ly/j2XAcz

This previously unissued version of “Lover Man,” which UNCUT deemed “a weaponised piece of funk, with Buddy Miles in particularly thunderous form,” was recorded at the Record Plant in New York on December 15, 1969 by Hendrix’s then recently assembled new band: Billy Cox on bass, Buddy Miles on drums and, of course, Hendrix on guitar and vocals. The session took place two weeks before the trio introduced itself to the world via four triumphant New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day concerts at the Fillmore East, which would ultimately yield the live album Band of Gypsys (1970) as well as its, critically acclaimed follow up, 2016’s Machine Gun.

Heralded by Relix as “both a historically valuable document . . . and a treat musically,” Both Sides of the Sky, the album home of “Lover Man,” is the third volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in Jimi Hendrix’s archive. It follows Valleys of Neptune (2010) and People, Hell and Angels (2013), which both achieved top 5 chart ranking on Billboard’s Top 100 album chart. Recorded between January 1968 and February 1970, and featuring guest appearances by Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter and Lonnie Youngblood, Both Sides of the Sky contains 10 unreleased tracks. The project was co-produced by Eddie Kramer, Jimi Hendrix’s recording engineer on all of his albums made during his life, along with Janie Hendrix and John McDermott.

In connection with the release of Both Sides of the Sky, an all-star band featuring Hendrix bassist Billy Cox (whose efforts are heard on the album) and blues legend Buddy Guy will be performing a Jimi Hendrix song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this upcoming Tuesday, March 13. The band is rounded out with Experience Hendrix Tour veteran Mato Nanji, Buddy Guy drummer Tim Austin, and the Slide Brothers.

Partnering with Experience Hendrix is world famous menswear designer John Varvatos. In connection with the album’s release, he has created a Jimi Hendrix Both Sides of the Sky t-shirt featuring exclusive artwork, available to purchase today at John Varvatos stores, online, and with retail partner Bloomingdales. Additionally, the 2LP vinyl version of the album will be sold in select John Varvatos locations.

Concert Update: The Rolling Stones, Experience Hendrix

It's high time to begin thinking about 2014. Wow, how the time flies!

THE ROLLING STONES
SET TO ROCK AUSTRALIA AT THE BRAND NEW ADELAIDE OVAL

SATURDAY 22 MARCH 2014
#StonesAdelaide

Ladies and Gentleman they are back!  The most eagerly anticipated concert of years and the entertainment opening of the world class Adelaide Oval in 2014 were announced today as rock icons The Rolling Stones confirm their long awaited return to the stage in Australia with a spectacular show. The date, unveiled today, is Saturday 22 March 2014.

This special Adelaide show continues the exhilarating celebration of the band’s five decades, with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Woods bringing their iconic music and ground-breaking stage shows to audiences around the globe.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Monday 25 November 2013 from 9am ACST – for further details see below.

Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-1974, will be a special guest for this concert.

The stage design for this show includes a massive ramp, over 30 metres long, which extends right into the audience allowing the Stones to interact directly with their audience.  Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show.

This is easily going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stage and production Adelaide has ever seen with nearly 60 trucks required for all the staging and production. It will be the only show in Australia featuring this level of outdoor production.

The Rolling Stones are really looking forward to this huge concert to open this iconic new venue:

Mick Jagger said: “It’s great to be invited to Adelaide to open the historic Oval…we’re really looking forward to doing this gig, it will be the first time we’ve been to Adelaide in nearly 20 years, so see you there!”

Keith Richards said: “Hi everyone down in Adelaide, it’s been a while since we were in your back yard… see you on March 22 when we’ll take over your new stadium and make it our own, look forward to it”.

Tony Cochrane from iEC said “Adelaide Oval and the Government asked me to come up with the biggest night I could think of for this one off event to re-open Adelaide Oval – that made it easy – it had to be The Rolling Stones and it had to be on a massive scale! ”

The Rolling Stones were recently crowned the ‘Best Live Band” at the NME Awards in London, and over the past 12 months have thrilled fans with the release of a ground-breaking new documentary, ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, a greatest hits collection, ‘GRRR!’, a massive US tour and a ground-breaking, back to back, sold out set of two historic Hyde Park concerts in the UK in front of 120,000, which are chronicled in a new concert film ‘Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live’.

The Adelaide concert will be promoted by IEC in association with Frontier/AEG Live.

More Rolling Stones concerts in Australia, and one in New Zealand, will be announced by Frontier Touring & AEG Live in the next few weeks.

Adelaide Oval
Adelaide Oval SMA CEO Andrew Daniels said The Rolling Stones would be the first of many great acts to come to South Australia as a result of the redeveloped Adelaide Oval.

“This is testament to the investment that has gone into this venue and the fact that it has well and truly put South Australia back on the map for global acts,” Mr Daniels said.

“To have The Rolling Stones perform at what will be the first major non-sporting event at Adelaide Oval is outstanding and we’re thrilled it will take place at our new stadium.”

EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TOUR BACK IN MARCH 2014 WITH ALL STAR LINE-UP
Jimi Hendrix
The eighth edition of the celebrated Experience Hendrix Tour is set to launch in March 2014.  These special event performances represent an ongoing tribute to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix.  Presented by BandFuse: Rock Legends, the month long tour, brings together a diverse group of musical greats paying homage to the abiding genius of Jimi Hendrix.  This year’s line-up ranges from metal legend Zakk Wylde [Ozzy Osbourne/Black Label Society], blues icon Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the innovative Dweezil Zappa, Los Lobos’ stalwarts Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo, left-handed blues rocker Eric Gales, Texas guitar gods Doyle Bramhall II and Eric Johnson, funk legend Bootsy Collins,   Mato Nanji [Indigenous], and, from Serbia by way of Memphis, Ana Popovic.  The rhythm section, as always, includes bassist Billy Cox, the only player, apart from Jimi Hendrix himself, who was part of both the Band of Gypsys and the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Chris Layton, the drummer who, along with the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, was a founder of Double Trouble.

"BandFuse: Rock Legends will inspire the millions of Hendrix fans who truly appreciate his incredible artistry and talent, as well as introduce his genius to a new generation of budding musicians,” said Jeff Marshall, Director of Artist Relations, Realta Entertainment.  “Playable kiosks of the game will be at each of the shows, giving attendees a pick up and play, real rock experience with the only game that provides the tools to help become the next guitar legend.”
It’s appropriate that BandFuse: Rock Legends is presenting the tour in light of it being named “The Best Music Video Game on the Market” by Guitar World Magazine. BandFuse: Rock Legends seamlessly connects real guitars, basses and microphones to game consoles, empowering players to jam using authentic animated tablature to a fully unlocked library of hit songs from rock to metal and punk to funk. Among the game’s mentors are such noted artists as Zakk Wylde and Bootsy Collins who are performing on the Experience Hendrix Tour as well as Slash, George Lynch, Mike Ness, Alexi Laiho, Zoltan Bathory and Jason Hook.
As in years past, Fender Guitars and Dunlop Manufacturing, whose gear is an integral part of the tour’s backline, sponsor the Experience Hendrix Tour together with IK Multimedia and Hal Leonard.

Janie Hendrix, President/CEO of Experience Hendrix L.L.C., noted, "Jimi often spoke of his concept of ‘Electric Church’ and using music to connect directly with people.  Everyday, we see how Jimi's musical legacy continues to transcend generational and cultural boundaries.  It’s our continuing mission to do all we can to celebrate what he’s given us and to keep his music in the forefront: the Experience Hendrix tour does that with brilliant musicians who love Jimi, electrifying the stage with his music and sound."

The tour officially begins in Dallas at the Verizon Theater on March 11 and, thereafter roars through the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions with stops in St. Louis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Washington and Detroit with more than 20 anticipated concert dates.
In terms of format, the tour offers multiple opportunities for performers and audiences to witness unique collaborations among the participating artists such as Dweezil Zappa with Billy Cox, Buddy Guy with Jonny Lang, Zakk Wylde with Chris Layton and will highlight these artists and the others performing their favorite Hendrix signature songs including “Little Wing,” “Fire,” “Purple Haze,” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”. As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix outings, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates, making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Joe Satriani, Hubert Sumlin, Steve Vai, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Carlos Santana, Robby Krieger, and others.
This year's Experience Hendrix Tour is the focus of the Jimi Hendrix Guitar Competition, which was just announced last week. The competition, backed by Sony Music's Legacy Recordings, IK Multimedia, Talenthouse along with Experience Hendrix, LLC offers entrants a chance to win a performing slot on one of the tour dates next year as well as a cash prize plus gear.  Contestants are invited to submit a video of their performance of a Jimi Hendrix track with the winner selected by a team of judges including Janie Hendrix, producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, Guitar World editor Brad Tolinski and musician Dave Stewart.

Billy Cox, the legendary bassist whose relationship with Jimi Hendrix and his music dates back to the early 1960s when the two met while serving in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. The two bonded over their love of music and would later work together backing R&B acts on the “chitlin’ circuit.”  They reunited when Cox was recruited to be part of the Jimi Hendrix Band of   as well as the ultimate iteration of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, performing at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox, who has been part of all previous Experience Hendrix tours, notes, "It's always a great thrill and honor for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now just as it was in the 1960s.  The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is and is just wonderful that we’ve continued to get an infusion of new, very enthusiastic artists to participate and are able to offer the most wide-ranging Jimi Hendrix-related repertoire possible."

Apart, of course, from Billy Cox, Buddy Guy holds the distinction of having actually played with Jimi Hendrix. The two first met in 1967 and Guy remembers, “We became pretty close from that night on and every time I went through New York or somewhere he would show up and we would jam together. That’s still kind of happening on the Experience Hendrix Tour.”

Dweezil Zappa commented, "I've always been a great admirer of Jimi Hendrix. My dad told me some great stories about playing with him. Jimi's ability to express himself so completely with an electric guitar is very inspiring to me. “There was an authentic expression of his personality in the music. And that rings true to every generation. He wasn't following trends. His playing was soulful and exciting and surprising.”
Shepherd, a veteran of most of the Experience Hendrix tours remarked, “Jimi Hendrix’s music has really inspired me to push the limits of my own music. He didn’t observe any boundaries musically. He was an amazing player and a tremendous showman so I incorporated some of his showmanship in what I do.”  As far as having been part of the Experience Hendrix touring phenomenon, Shepherd noted, “It touches you on the inside and gets you fired up."
The tour’s presence has been made known on national TV with Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo performing classic Hendrix on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno; Jonny Lang on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Kenny Wayne Shepherd playing Jimi Hendrix's actual Woodstock guitar on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
Massively popular with fans and critics alike, an earlier edition of the Experience Hendrix tour inspired Larry Rodgers of the Arizona Republic to rave, "It was encouraging to see fans of all ages, from teens to baby boomers who witnessed Hendrix's career launch firsthand, in the Mesa crowd. The show and that crowd made it clear that Hendrix's magical music will never die."

Ben Wener Orange County Register characterized the show as "an all-star array of modern and legendary guitar greats in a nearly three-hour tribute to the most innovative virtuoso who ever touched six strings. It helped, of course, that the performances were uniformly strong, even inspired, an Electric Church encounter that one likes to think would have made Jimi proud."
Jeff Miers of Buffalo News wrote,  "The nearly three-hour show moved from peak to peak, as varying configurations of musicians gathered to explore the Hendrix canon."

Scott Mervis, in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, observed, “In the end, amidst all the star power on stage, the message reaffirmed in every lick, riff and warped melody was the wild and true genius of Jimi Hendrix.”
Dan Durchholz, covering the tour for the St. Louis Post Dispatch marveled at how "...the Experience Hendrix tour showed just how pervasive (Hendrix's) influence continues to be. The three-hour show featured an all-star lineup from a variety of musical traditions, united by a collective debt to the iconic artist's songs, showmanship and trailblazing technique. Despite its creator's demise decades ago, Hendrix's music is still alive and well.”
