Another week, another slew of media releases from all corners of the musical universe to share...I lead things off with news about a new album and tour from Rhett Miller (who is set to appear here in Orange County on June 17, 2012...

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED
Rhett Miller has announced the release of his new album, The Dreamer, on June 5. The Dreamer was produced by Miller himself and will be released on his very own Maximum Sunshine Records, distributed by The Orchard. The album features guest appearances by singers Rosanne Cash and Rachael Yamagata, as well as additional percussion by Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel). The band on the record is Miller's touring group, the Serial Lady Killers. This is the second release on his label, the first being 2011's The Interpreter - Live at Largo. The first single from the record, "Out of Love," is now available for download HERE.
The Dreamer is Miller's sixth solo record and represents the first time he has ever self-produced. In the past, Miller's solo efforts were dramatically different from his work with Old 97's. While the band's songs are often steeped in Americana and country, the solo records have always been decidedly more rock and pop affairs. Until now, as The Dreamer finds the Texas-bred, New York-based singer/songwriter marrying his two worlds like never before.
Says Miller, "I produced The Dreamer myself, a first for me, and had a very clear vision of what it should be -- an intimate, rootsy record that would bridge the gap between my work with the Old 97's and the solo albums I've made in the past. The Dreamer is all about simple American songs and instrumentation. It was a blast to make."
Rhett Miller will appear at SXSW this week, followed by a North American tour featuring both solo acoustic shows and shows with his band, Rhett Miller & The Serial Lady Killers.

Allen Stone will perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Tuesday, March 13. Hailed as a "pitch-perfect powerhouse" by USA Today, Stone will wrap up his current headlining tour with two sold-out shows at the legendary Troubadour (March 24, 25). In the months since the 24-year-old Washington state native last played Los Angeles – selling out shows at Hotel Café and The Echo – his self-titled sophomore album, released on Stone’s own entirely independent stickystones label, has brought him national attention and led to sold-out shows from coast to coast.
Reviewing Stone’s fall 2011 show at SOB’s, The New York Times’ Jon Pareles observed: “his music reached back four decades to the late 1960s and early ’70s, when songwriters like Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers brought introspection and social commentary to soul music.” Esquire, CNN and Billboard named Stone as an artist to watch and he appeared on MTV Buzzworthy’s list of the “Most Criminally Overlooked Artists Of 2011.” Stone made his national television debut on “Conan” in October, performing “Unaware,” a song the show’s booker had seen Allen perform in his mother’s living room via a YouTube clip.
Still without the support of a record label, Stone has tour dates booked into September – including two dates at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, his first-ever European tour, an April run on the “Live From Daryl’s House” tour with Daryl Hall and Sharon Jones and appearances at the Hangout and Sasquatch music festivals. He’ll join Dave Matthews Band on the final six shows of the group’s 2012 summer tour, including three nights at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, WA (August 8/31, 9/1 & 2) and stops in Chula Vista, Irvine and Mountain View, CA. Inbox Update: The Raconteurs, Deep Purple, Alter Bridge, 'Every Mother Counts' benefit album
The Raconteurs, Deep Purple and Alter Bridge are among the greats set to issue exciting new collections on DVD/Blu-ray or CD. There is also news on a just-announced benefit CD set to benefit a maternal health advocacy organization that features the celebrated likes of Beck, Coldplay, the Dave Matthews Band, and members of U2 and Pearl Jam...
On June 19, 2012, Eagle Rock Entertainment release Live At Montreux 2008 by The Raconteurs. Filmed in high definition, this show will be simultaneously released on DVD and Blu-ray formats. This is the first-ever video release by The Raconteurs and features tracks from both their top 10 albums including the singles “Steady, As She Goes”, “Many Shades Of Black”, “Broken Boy Soldier”, “Salute Your Solution” and more.
The Raconteurs were formed in 2005 by Jack White of The White Stripes, acclaimed solo artist Brendan Benson and drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence from The Greenhornes. Their debut album Broken Boy Soldiers charted at No.2 in the UK and follow up Consolers Of The Lonely went in at No.8. Both albums were also Top 10 in the USA. This performance from Montreux in 2008 was part of the tour in support of their second album. The setlist is split between songs from the two albums and includes covers of Terry Reid’s “Rich Kid Blues” and the old Charley Jordan track “Keep It Clean”.
Live At Montreux 2008 by The Raconteurs is rough, tough rock ‘n’ roll with great tunes and even better guitar hooks performed by an outstanding live band.

Classic Live From Australia CD Gets Released On April 24
Eagle Rock Entertainment is set to release—for the first time in the U.S.—Deep Purple’s Total Abandon: Australia ‘99 on CD April 24.
Recorded April 20, 1999 at Melbourne Park, the 12-song 76-minute blockbuster, until now, was only available domestically as a DVD in the 2008 Around The World Live boxed set (also released by Eagle Rock Entertainment). Total Abandon is a major boon for Deep Purple fans as it musically traverses decades with material mostly from the ‘70s and the ‘90s. Lead guitarist Steve Morse, at this point in the band’s glorious career, had fully integrated himself into the mix, positively shining on songs from both eras.
The lineup of vocalist Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord, drummer Ian Paice and guitarist Morse are in rare form: the almost nine-minute-each jam-happy versions of “Pictures of Home” and “Smoke On The Water” are just two highlights of many. Besides favorites like “Black Night” “Smoke On The Water” and “Highway Star” the band reached into its enormous catalog for an incredibly satisfying evening that included opener “Ted The Mechanic” and “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming” both off guitarist Morse’s album debut with the band, Purpendicular, in 1996.
Touring in support of 1998’s Abandon album, the “A Band On World Tour” had Deep Purple criss-crossing the globe like the true road warriors they remain today.

“When the tour was booked, we saw that there were a few arenas, Wembley being one of them,” says lead guitar player Mark Tremonti. “We were excited and nervous, wondering if the tickets would sell. They did, and we were blown away. The first four or five songs of any set are usually pretty nerve-wracking. Those are the tunes where we're finding our footing and trying to get comfortable. But Wembley was different. Even with all of the cameras and the fact that we were filming and we couldn't make any mistakes, it was fun right from the start.”
Directed by long time Alter Bridge Director Daniel E. Catullo III (Rush, Nickelback, Smashing Pumpkins, Godsmack) and produced by Catullo and Lionel Pasamonte, the 16-camera, state-of-the-art high definition shoot was filmed in front of a fanatical audience of more than 10,000 English fans as the band gave the performance of a lifetime, captured in pristine audio visual perfection, in 5.1 DTS Surround Sound, at Wembley Arena in London. The Deluxe Edition of the DVD is set to include a second bonus disc of content shot specifically for this release, plus a 60-minute documentary called “The Road To Wembley” and photo gallery, and 16-page souvenir booklet.

Every Mother Counts, the maternal health advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by Christy Turlington Burns, has announced the upcoming release of Every Mother Counts 2012, the organization’s second CD collaboration with Starbucks. Through the album, Every Mother Counts and Starbucks aim to raise funds to support efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve maternal health around the world. Inspired by motherhood, the featured artists and musicians contributed cover songs and original compositions, many of which were recorded exclusively for this compilation.
Every Mother Counts 2012 will be available in participating Starbucks company-operated stores in the U.S. and Canada from May 1, 2012 through May 29, in honor of mothers everywhere during the month of May, and will be available while supplies last. Eight dollars from the sale of each CD from participating Starbucks stores will be given in support of Every Mother Counts, through its fiscal sponsor, the New Venture Fund.

The album peaked at #54 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, #12 on the Rock Albums chart and #7 on the Independent Albums chart. Starbucks donated $8 (USD) from the sale of each CD from participating Starbucks stores to CARE for its maternal health programs in coffee growing countries and to help support maternal health relief efforts by Every Mother Counts.

Trevor Rabin set to release Jacaranda on May 8, 2012
Jacaranda is Trevor Rabin's first new solo project since his album Can't Look Away. The extremely versatile Rabin covers a wide range of styles on the new album, including rock, jazz, and classical. Trevor plays all of the instruments himself, with the exception of drums on the tracks, for which he brought in noted jazz/rock drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Frank Zappa), longtime Rabin drummer Lou Molino III, and Trevor’s son Ryan Rabin (Grouplove). He also brought in noted bass guitarist Tal Wilkenfeld (Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock) who plays on the track “Anerley Road.” Vocalist Liz Constintine is featured on the track “Rescue,” inspired by the film The Guardian.
Trevor has long been regarded as one of the finest guitarists in the world. His collaborations include working with Seal, Michael Jackson, Manfred Mann, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan and Paul Rodgers to name a few.
Trevor Rabin is also one of the most sought-after film composers in the business. He has created music that crosses barriers and genres that have made him one of the premier composers of contemporary music. As a guitarist, keyboardist, singer, songwriter, producer or recording engineer, Trevor has established himself as a leader in the contemporary music field. The original line-up of Bad Company has announced a short run of European festival dates for this summer. Commencing on June 9, the legendary ensemble will take the stage at the Sweden Rock Festival in Solvesborg. Additional appearances will include five German Rock The Nation Festival performances in Berlin (6/11), Stuttgart (6/12), Augsburg (6/14), Trier (6/15) and Monchengladbach / Cologne (6/16). Bad Company is Paul Rodgers, Mick Ralphs, and Simon Kirke. This excursion marks the first time that Bad Company has performed on the European continent together in 37 years.
The April 2010 release Bad Company Live at Wembley (DVD / Blu-Ray, Eagle Rock) has been a chart staple worldwide for the past year.
In December, Bad Company front man and main songwriter Paul Rodgers released a new studio recording titled "With Our Love." The song was shared with fans and the public on his 62nd birthday, with 100 percent of the proceeds earmarked for the charities The Racehorse Sanctuary & Rocking Horse Children's Charity and Seraphim 12 Foundation. The composition was co-written and performed with Perry Margouleff.
All of these charities are organizations Rodgers has offered significant support to in the past, in fact he is a Patron of one while Perry Margouleff is a Senior Board Member of the other. Rodgers shared, "Horses are such a powerful part of human development and have been since the early ages. We humans owe them so much. My wife Cynthia and I have visited both sanctuaries and can't imagine any of these healthy vibrant beings being sent off to slaughter. Deadline Music will release a special 2-CD Humble Pie collection which packages the complete records ON TO VICTORY and GO FOR THE THROAT with a bonus disc of live material recorded in 1981.
Formed in the UK in 1968, Humble Pie was a compilation of extraordinary talent (such as Peter Frampton) that uniquely bridged the gaps between hard rock, prog rock, blues, and soul. Fronted by guitar player and singer Steve Marriott, the early ‘80s Humble Pie represented in these discs also included drummer Jerry Shirley (later of Fastway), guitarist Bobby Tench (from The Jeff Beck Group) and bassist Anthony “Sooty” Jones. ON TO VICTORY, released in 1980, featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Fool for a Pretty Face.” They toured with Ted Nugent and Aerosmith before quickly releasing GO FOR THE THROAT in 1981. The group went through a few different lineup changes, breakups, and reformations until the untimely passing of Steve Marriott in 1991.
In addition to “Fool for a Pretty Face,” fan favorites like “Infatuation” and “Teenage Anxiety” are featured. This unique package also includes full liner notes and rare photos. The bonus disc is an electrifying concert recorded in Los Angeles in 1981.

Anathema will return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album.
Weather Systems is the follow-up to 2010’s We're Here Because We're Here, which has been featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as ''definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.''
The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high, but Daniel Cavanagh from the band is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, stating, "it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album."

Anathema will return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album.Weather Systems is the follow-up to 2010’s We're Here Because We're Here, which has been featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as ''definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.''
The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high, but Daniel Cavanagh from the band is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, stating, "it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album."
He continues, "This is not background music for parties. The music is written to deeply move the listener, to uplift or take the listener to the coldest depths of the soul."

Young the Giant, Jeramiah Red, Railroad to Alaska nab multiple wins at 11th annual Orange County Music Awards
Orange County has long been a hotbed for original music. Early heroes like the Chantays, Dick Dale and singer-songwriter Jackson Browne paved the way for a substantial ’80s wave bolstered by synth-pop band Berlin and punk rock legends Social Distortion and the Adolescents, as well as a flood of ’90s acts — Lit, No Doubt, Korn and the Offspring among the best-known.
Fast forward to the 21st century and O.C.’s ever-burgeoning musical tent now includes groundbreaking talent from a variety of genres.
Much of it was celebrated Saturday night (March 3, 2012) at the 11th annual OC Music Awards at City National Grove of Anaheim, where breakout band Young the Giant came away the big winner with three trophies, including nods for best song and best music video (both for hit single “Cough Syrup”), although the Irvine group wasn’t on hand to accept. Newcomers Railroad to Alaska and Jeramiah Red nabbed two apiece, while mainstays Social D, the Adolescents and Thrice also got their due.
Indeed, in addition to YTG, it seems emerging acts Railroad, Jeramiah (pictured) and two-time best indie champ Kiev are poised to join their celebrated O.C. forebears in building a national reputation, considering both their wins and winning performances here.
Of the nine live turns, staged amid awards in 26 categories, Kiev was in a class by itself thanks to the use of 3D technology that enhanced its Radiohead-meets-Steely Dan sonic sphere, something the sextet first successfully tried while opening for Menomena last year at Samueli Theater. Everyone in the audience was given appropriate glasses to wear during Kiev’s performance of “Small Kid / Big Tree,” allowing them to see a multi-layered effect that had animation dancing in front and behind the band during its experimental rock.
Other memorable performances came from many of the evening’s winners: singer-songwriter Nicole Vaughn and Her Lovely Band, which won for best country/Americana, capably kick-started the ceremony; best new artist honoree Jeramiah Red rocked with more zest than you’d expect from a best blues winner; best Latin victor Boogaloo Assassins delivered a tight jam while folk-soul trio Allensworth (previously announced best live acoustic winner) docked its usual groove armada to instead appear in effective scaled-down fashion.
As the OC Music Awards have grown, so has the show itself advanced light years ahead of early incarnations, when it was a struggle to get sponsors or attract the region’s most famous names to participate.
Saturday’s ceremony once again featured KROQ‘s Psycho Mike as host, and in addition to reps from a horde of sponsors (Farmer John, Bud Light, Wahoo’s and Ernie Ball, just to name the biggest), the roll call of presenters included X vocalist (and current O.C. resident) Exene Cervenka, Dramarama frontman John Easdale and Vandals bassist Joe Escalante, who shared candid thoughts on the significance of being named best punk before giving that prize to the Adolescents.
Escalante, currently campaigning for an L.A. County judge’s seat in the June 5 election, remembered how bands back then “were bored. We were sick of (’70s/’80s rock station) KMET, we didn’t like hippies … we didn’t even know why we didn’t like hippies.” They just desperately wanted to carve out a different identity.
Those seminal groups, he said, gave rise to a distinctly O.C. punk flavor that over time has translated to heftier paydays, as the geographical tag now fetches a premium from booking agents internationally: “Oh, this is an Orange County band? Then we’re gonna pay ‘em a little more.”
Steve Soto of the Adolescents, meanwhile, gave props to O.C.’s earliest and oft-forgotten punk outfits, the Crowd and Middle Class, while reminding the audience in his acceptance speech that “in our neighborhood, we grew up with Social Distortion and Agent Orange.”
Thrice, the Dustin Kensrue-fronted quartet that recently announced it will go on indefinite hiatus after its next tour, was on hand to receive its previously announced Orange County Impact Award as well as the competitive trophy for best rock. Rodney Bingenheimer, aka Rodney on the ROQ, was this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and was treated to a video tribute featuring fellow KROQ personalities Jed the Fish and Richard Blade, as well as Blondie singer Debbie Harry, all four members members of No Doubt and other musicians whose ascensions were assisted via crucial airplay on the Mayor of Sunset Strip’s radio show.
Ever the champion of rising indie artists, Bingenheimer closed out brief but heartfelt remarks by urging the talent on hand at the sold-out Grove to “send me more CDs. I’m there (on the air) at midnight, so stick around.”
Throughout the event, award winners were gracious, thanking family and friends and praising fellow nominees. Not everyone could make it to the show — best world champ the Dirty Heads were busy playing Cypress Hill’s Smokeout in San Bernardino — but those who couldn’t attend acknowledged the honor via video.
“Who knew 30 years into this I would get an award like this,” Mike Ness said in a prerecorded thank-you after Social Distortion’s Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes was named best album. “It was a big risk producing this myself.”
But it was Cervenka, iconic poet and one-of-a-kind vocalist from the L.A. punk scene of the ’80s, who best summed up why more musicians hold O.C. in esteem now, rather than automatically seek out fame and fortune via Hollywood, Austin or New York.
“I moved to Orange County 2½ years ago,” she said before presenting the best song award. “I never thought I’d move behind the Orange Curtain. I’m very happy I did.”

Tiger Army roars at Musink kickoff

What a difference a voice makes. Having a great bunch of songs helps, too.
Tiger Army may share a psychobilly sound with the Howlers and the legendary Guana Batz, the two acts that opened for the group Friday night (March 2, 2012) at the launch of the annual Musink tattoo and music convention at the OC Fair & Events Center. But there is little doubt who owned the musical side of things during this first of three festival days in Costa Mesa.
Armed with a vocalist who likely would have been a success no matter what genre he fell in love with, plus a selection of tunes ranging from blistering punk to pumped-up rockabilly and plenty of country- and blues-tinged stuff, the NorCal-bred, SoCal-based trio — singer-guitarist Nick 13, stand-up bassist Geoff Kresge and drummer James Meza — celebrated their craft with every moment of their 90-minute set.
Mixing several early favorites from their self-titled 1999 debut (notably the hard-driving “True Romance,” rockabilly romp “Devil Girl” and night-ending “Last Night”) with more recent material, Tiger Army turned a dark and cold hangar into a bright and jubilant hootenanny.
Hearing how the band approached an older song like “True Romance” or the more recently penned rocker “Afterworld” illustrated just how solidly Tiger Army is in command of its game. During the verses the threesome would play powerfully even while Nick deployed his tenor with finesse he displayed singing ballads on his self-titled solo project last year — yet suddenly the band would explode in the chorus, and never to the point where they failed to lock in when another verse came ’round.
“Cupid’s Victim” was another compelling entry, the group roaring at full force while Nick sang with resonant emotion. Without his singular voice and the textured approach from everybody in the trio, it’s unlikely that Tiger Army’s distinctive style of muscular music and gothically romantic lyrics would work. They were so good, in fact, that even a mostly faithful cover of Eddie Cochran’s classic “Twenty Flight Rock” exploded as if it had just been conceived.
But the highlight of Tiger Army’s turn — which will be followed by tonight’s New Found Glory/Yellowcard-led roster and a Sunday lineup capped by Alkaline Trio and Against Me! — was the original tune “Pain.” That track came across like a blend of modern-day Social Distortion and early-’80s Stray Cats, boasted by Nick 13′s potent vocals and a dynamic arrangement fully developed by the trio of musicians sharing the stage.
It’s unlikely that even on their best nights Guana Batz or the Howlers could compete with such a roar.
The former, a pioneering psychobilly quartet founded 30 years ago by Englishman Pip Hancox, showcased its strong points: Hancox is an energetic singer and he was aided in spades by guitar virtuoso Gino Meregillano. But it isn’t a great night when a mostly spot-on version of Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” is a band’s best offering.
Originals such as “Love Generator” and the ska-tinged “Wondrous Place” were performed with might, yet ultimately didn’t infuse the night with much excitement. The troupe ended on a high note, finally getting the crowd into its brand of rock ‘n’ roll with one of its best-known songs, “King Rat.”
The Howlers have a bigger lineup, five players in all, but rather than forging into the concert with strength in numbers, the Southern California outfit’s half-hour set initially came off a muddled mess. The quintet improved as they went along, however, and by the end they effectively delivered a strong “Watch the World Die” (with some effectively minimalist guitar work) as well as the screaming “Follow the Wolf.”

Shawn Jones set to celebrate his latest release with upcoming concert dates
One of my favorite independent singer-songwriter-guitarists is Ventura, California-based Shawn Jones. Having blown me away when I first caught him at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point in May 2008, he has subsequently impressed me at outings whether backed by a full band or in his winning solo acoustic outings.

Dandy Warhols Premiere "Well They're Gone" On Rolling Stone

The Dandy Warhols have been a band for 18 yrs.
This Machine is the Dandy's 8th official studio album and was recorded over the course of 2011 at The Dandy Warhols rock clubhouse/ entertainment megaplex/studio The Odditorium. The band recorded the album with their longtime engineer - producer Jeremy Sherrer. Taylor-Taylor describes this record as "stripped down, woody and extremely guitar centric."
The album was mixed Tchad Blake who also mixed The Dandy Warhols Odditorium or Warlords of Mars and Come Down. Tchad is well known for his recent work with The Black Keys, Blitzen Trapper and Pearl Jam. The album cover for This Machine was painted by local Portland, Oregon painter Hickory Mertsching.
Famed Science Fiction writer Richard Morgan penned the band’s official Bio for This Machine. It’s 4 short stories that do a much better job entertaining than this bullet point list. You can get more information on the band at their official Web site.
Stand out track, Autumn Carnival was co authored by Courtney Taylor Taylor and David J of Love and Rockets. About the album, Courtney says, "We've been told that its our gothiest. I thought it was our grungiest so I'm really hoping its a hit with goths who are...um, really outdoorsy?"

mewithoutYou returns with their 5th studio album Ten Stories, set for release May 15, 2012. A deluxe vinyl edition will be available as well. Helmed by producer and friend of the band Daniel Smith (Sufjan Stevens) and mixed by Brad Wood, Ten Stories is an allegorical collection of songs that, at first listen, follows a winding narrative about a circus train crash in 19th century Montana. But long-time fans of this band know that although we are immediately introduced to a talking elephant, fox and tiger, there is always more than meets the eye.
mewithoutYou – frontman Aaron Weiss, guitarist Michael Weiss, bassist Greg Jehanian and drummer Rickie Mazzotta – will be previewing the new songs during a run of select live shows in early March, beginning March 3, 2012 in Baltimore at Metro Gallery. A U.S. Spring tour will be announced in the coming weeks.
Ten years into their life together as a band, mewithoutYou are still searching, and they still compel us to join them in their search. Well-loved for their introspective and eccentric ruminations on life, love, loss, spirituality and temptation, Ten Stories is the result of a lot of living and a lot of death. After experiencing the joy of a newborn baby in the Weiss family in early 2010, it wasn’t too long before several deaths of relatives and friends shook the band to its core. They spent some time apart to live their lives, but it is their deep friendships that always bring them back together again.
Reflecting on their history together, drummer Rickie Mazzotta says, “Think about everything that happens in the course of a decade – death, taxes, scholastics, break-ups, birth, illness, World Series Championships, foggy memories, whack decisions, the loss of innocence, the highest highs and the lowest lows. We’ve been through a lot together. When we came together to make Ten Stories, it was spawned out of being apart for a while, home with friends and lovers, pursuing other interests and naturally gravitating back towards one another in space and sound.”
This natural reunion led to the band beginning work on Ten Stories with a relaxed approach, leisurely enjoying the summer sun and leaving behind any pre-conceived ideas of what kind of songs they wanted to make. The result is an incredibly expansive album, encompassing where the band has been and where they are going. mewithoutYou’s last album, 2009’s It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All a Dream! It’s Alright!, was a marked departure into the world of folk and written around an acoustic guitar, Ten Stories adds the band’s raucous vocals and hard-hitting instrumentation back into the mix. Still present are their melodic overtones and lush orchestration of more recent years, making for a riveting musical journey at the album’s every turn.
Through the fable-like interactions of fictitious animals, Ten Stories offers up deep ponderings and keen observations about human character flaws and the circle of life. As the band further explores their signature themes of romantic disaster and quasi-mystical speculation, a naive rabbit falls for a footloose fortune teller and a monastic walrus for a hedonistic owl. A pretentious Fox has a prophetic dream, a starving Bear has a vision of a martyred saint and an indecisive Peacock and gnostic Tiger learn the virtues of megalomania from an ego-annihilated Potter Wasp. From the urgent suspense of album opener “February 1878,” to the sweeping drum patterns and gritty vocals of “Grist for the Malady Mill,” to the psychedelic gem “Aubergine” to the special guest artist on “Fox’s Dream of the Log Flume,” it’s clear that Ten Stories is one of mewithoutYou’s most dynamic albums to date.
The cover art for Ten Stories, which will be revealed through puzzle pieces on the band’s Facebook page over the course of the next week, was illustrated by artist Vasily Kafanov, who also created the artwork for The Smashing Pumpkins’ Machina album. Additional pieces of art by Kafanov will be included in the album layout and an individual illustration of each song will be featured in the deluxe vinyl booklet.

Dandy Warhols Premiere "Well They're Gone" On Rolling Stone

The Dandy Warhols have been a band for 18 yrs.
This Machine is the Dandy's 8th official studio album and was recorded over the course of 2011 at The Dandy Warhols rock clubhouse/ entertainment megaplex/studio The Odditorium. The band recorded the album with their longtime engineer - producer Jeremy Sherrer. Taylor-Taylor describes this record as "stripped down, woody and extremely guitar centric."
The album was mixed Tchad Blake who also mixed The Dandy Warhols Odditorium or Warlords of Mars and Come Down. Tchad is well known for his recent work with The Black Keys, Blitzen Trapper and Pearl Jam. The album cover for This Machine was painted by local Portland, Oregon painter Hickory Mertsching.
Famed Science Fiction writer Richard Morgan penned the band’s official Bio for This Machine. It’s 4 short stories that do a much better job entertaining than this bullet point list. You can get more information on the band at their official Web site.
Stand out track, Autumn Carnival was co authored by Courtney Taylor Taylor and David J of Love and Rockets. About the album, Courtney says, "We've been told that its our gothiest. I thought it was our grungiest so I'm really hoping its a hit with goths who are...um, really outdoorsy?"

mewithoutYou returns with their 5th studio album Ten Stories, set for release May 15, 2012. A deluxe vinyl edition will be available as well. Helmed by producer and friend of the band Daniel Smith (Sufjan Stevens) and mixed by Brad Wood, Ten Stories is an allegorical collection of songs that, at first listen, follows a winding narrative about a circus train crash in 19th century Montana. But long-time fans of this band know that although we are immediately introduced to a talking elephant, fox and tiger, there is always more than meets the eye.
mewithoutYou – frontman Aaron Weiss, guitarist Michael Weiss, bassist Greg Jehanian and drummer Rickie Mazzotta – will be previewing the new songs during a run of select live shows in early March, beginning March 3, 2012 in Baltimore at Metro Gallery. A U.S. Spring tour will be announced in the coming weeks.
Ten years into their life together as a band, mewithoutYou are still searching, and they still compel us to join them in their search. Well-loved for their introspective and eccentric ruminations on life, love, loss, spirituality and temptation, Ten Stories is the result of a lot of living and a lot of death. After experiencing the joy of a newborn baby in the Weiss family in early 2010, it wasn’t too long before several deaths of relatives and friends shook the band to its core. They spent some time apart to live their lives, but it is their deep friendships that always bring them back together again.
Reflecting on their history together, drummer Rickie Mazzotta says, “Think about everything that happens in the course of a decade – death, taxes, scholastics, break-ups, birth, illness, World Series Championships, foggy memories, whack decisions, the loss of innocence, the highest highs and the lowest lows. We’ve been through a lot together. When we came together to make Ten Stories, it was spawned out of being apart for a while, home with friends and lovers, pursuing other interests and naturally gravitating back towards one another in space and sound.”
This natural reunion led to the band beginning work on Ten Stories with a relaxed approach, leisurely enjoying the summer sun and leaving behind any pre-conceived ideas of what kind of songs they wanted to make. The result is an incredibly expansive album, encompassing where the band has been and where they are going. mewithoutYou’s last album, 2009’s It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All a Dream! It’s Alright!, was a marked departure into the world of folk and written around an acoustic guitar, Ten Stories adds the band’s raucous vocals and hard-hitting instrumentation back into the mix. Still present are their melodic overtones and lush orchestration of more recent years, making for a riveting musical journey at the album’s every turn.
Through the fable-like interactions of fictitious animals, Ten Stories offers up deep ponderings and keen observations about human character flaws and the circle of life. As the band further explores their signature themes of romantic disaster and quasi-mystical speculation, a naive rabbit falls for a footloose fortune teller and a monastic walrus for a hedonistic owl. A pretentious Fox has a prophetic dream, a starving Bear has a vision of a martyred saint and an indecisive Peacock and gnostic Tiger learn the virtues of megalomania from an ego-annihilated Potter Wasp. From the urgent suspense of album opener “February 1878,” to the sweeping drum patterns and gritty vocals of “Grist for the Malady Mill,” to the psychedelic gem “Aubergine” to the special guest artist on “Fox’s Dream of the Log Flume,” it’s clear that Ten Stories is one of mewithoutYou’s most dynamic albums to date.
The cover art for Ten Stories, which will be revealed through puzzle pieces on the band’s Facebook page over the course of the next week, was illustrated by artist Vasily Kafanov, who also created the artwork for The Smashing Pumpkins’ Machina album. Additional pieces of art by Kafanov will be included in the album layout and an individual illustration of each song will be featured in the deluxe vinyl booklet.

Lee Rocker's ride to roots music celebrated on 'Night Train to Memphis'

Lee Rocker's career has come full circle. On the just-issued Night Train to Memphis, the 50-year-old cat who got his start in the late ’70s has reworked some favorite songs into a self-produced tribute to his musical heroes and friends, as well as a celebration of the enduring power of rock ’n’ roll.
“I feel like this record is me doing what I do best — it’s songs and music that I’ve played for a lifetime,” says the longtime Laguna Beach resident, who changed his name from Leon Drucker to Lee Rocker when he and pals Brian Setzer and James McDonnell (better known as Slim Jim Phantom) formed Stray Cats in 1979.
Night Train serves up versions of classics made famous by Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Elvis Presley, among others, plus a blistering original and even a reworked Stray Cats cut.
“It’s my take on some classic stuff,” Rocker says. “Some of these songs I did myself or with the (Stray) Cats. I worked with Carl Perkins a lot, and I did ‘Honey Don’t’ and played ‘Night Train to Memphis’ with him, actually.”
In addition to his role as fast-fingered double-bassist in Stray Cats, one of Rocker’s more notable turns came in October 1985 at the Carl Perkins and Friends concert, where he joined George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Rosanne Cash and several others in saluting the rockabilly legend.
“I also got to perform quite a bit with Scotty Moore (Presley’s guitarist in the ’50s), who toured with my band, and D.J. Fontana, Elvis’ drummer.” Naturally, among the dozen tracks on the new album is a medley of “That’s All Right Mama” and “Blue Moon.”
“It’s a roots record that has got a lot of roots to me, and it was recorded with very little technology. I don’t think there are any musical overdubs except on maybe one or two songs (for which he or Buzz Campbell added banjo or dobro over their respective bass and guitar playing). So in a lot of ways it was a real rock ’n’ roll record how they used to be done.”
Not only was the recording process more old-school but the album was completed very quickly: “Sometime last winter I went into the studio for three days with the band, and then over the summer might have gone in and finished it over the course of a few days. It’s a record that went down very easy … it wasn’t an agonizing experience like sometimes things can be.
“And I think that’s pretty telling — when it’s right, it just happens. We just sat down and played. It’s really what I’ve been playing live for a lifetime and what the guys in the band – Brophy (Dale on guitar), Buzz (Campbell on guitar) and Jimmy (Sage on drums) – have been playing with me for more than a decade.”
Along with a variety of solid rockabilly tunes, there’s a healthy blend of blues, bluegrass and even gospel elements fused into the material on Night Train. Rocker showcases his superb voice on several tender ballads, closing things out with Don Everly’s “So Sad” and the Felice & Boudleaux Bryant-penned Everly Brothers gem “All I Have to Do Is Dream.”
Then there’s his remake of “Built for Speed,” the title cut from Stray Cats’ breakthrough album, which turns 30 in June: “(That) is a song close to my heart … (but) I wanted to do something different with that. This is the rockabilly/bluegrass version.”
There’s a directness and honesty to Rocker’s throwback style that eludes so much of modern music’s focus-group, mass-marketed thinking. Yet an original song as straightforward as “Slap the Bass” can still explode out of the speakers. (It’s “what I do,” he says simply. “I had a platform to showcase that. It’s about the bass.”)
As for this weekend’s release party, Rocker knew all along he wanted it at the Coach House: “I’ve played there so many times and seen so many other great shows there. It’s that home away from home … it’s a natural.”

Once the channel is live, show production will gather pace, with further compelling features and personalities unveiled in the proceeding weeks.

Touring in 1993 in support of their Feel This album, The Jeff Healey Band hit The Peer Blues Festival in Belgium running! The songs are highlighted by Healey's soulful vocals and his wild'n'wooly over-the-top electric guitar solos, played in his inimitable style on his lap like a dobro. The 82 minutes fly by as Healey really gets into his signature cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as well as "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors and some of his own classic tracks including "Angel Eyes" and "Full Circle." Making this particular performance special is the fact that the trio is augmented by two backing vocalists and a keyboard player. This takes the presentation up to a whole new level as the band is, in effect, doubled. Besides the Feel This material, Healey performs tracks off his very popular See The Light and Hell To Pay albums.
Jeff Healey (1966-2008) was a Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist of mammoth talent who fused a love of blues and rockin' anthems into a jam-happy stew of crowd-crazy proportions. He could sing like an angel, sting like a bee on his axe and perform like he was born to do so.

The 82 minutes fly by as Healey really gets into his signature cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as well as "Roadhouse Blues" by The Doors and some of his own classic tracks including "Angel Eyes" and "Full Circle." Making this particular performance special is the fact that the trio is augmented by two backing vocalists and a keyboard player. This takes the presentation up to a whole new level as the band is, in effect, doubled. Besides the Feel This material, Healey performs tracks off his very popular See The Light and Hell To Pay albums.
Jeff Healey (1966-2008) was a Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist of mammoth talent who fused a love of blues and rockin' anthems into a jam-happy stew of crowd-crazy proportions. He could sing like an angel, sting like a bee on his axe and perform like he was born to do so.
