WHAT: The GRAMMY Museum® announces the debut of its popular Public Program series as part of its Digital Museum on the Museum's website, starting with Soul Asylum this Saturday, April 18, followed by Caitlyn Smith on Monday, April 20. The Museum cancelled all upcoming programs during its closure until further notice in light of COVID-19. The Museum's Public Program series normally takes place in its 200-seat Clive Davis Theater at the GRAMMY Museum L.A. Live, but will now be recorded via Zoom and released on the Museum's website. The series features interviews with moderator Scott Goldman and will be released every week throughout the Museum's indefinite closure. Since the GRAMMY Museum opened 12 years ago, it has offered more than 900 Public Programs. The Museum has also been releasing free digital content, including never-before-released archival Public Program footage, exhibit slideshows that feature past exhibitions, digital educational content and lessons plans, and continuing its mission of paying tribute to our musical heritage and bringing our community together through music. The Museum is sharing daily playlists and thoughts curated by its staff, including the guest services and security team members, in an effort to continue keeping all employees engaged during this closure.

Musicians are now famously performing from their homes via social media and streaming sites, entertaining a populace “sheltering in place” and in need of diversion. Not only have their day jobs ended, but their performance income is also gone.

The MusicPro Café sponsored by PreSonus, Discmakers and Merchly webcast will take place this Friday night, streaming simultaneously on ZOOM and YouTube. The event will feature six in-home performances by a curated roster of musicians. Each artist will be paid a fee, receive merchandise and viewers can tip the artists via an e-commerce platform. The artists each answered a call sent by various music industry companies and organizations and only had to reply with links to their music in order to apply.

The Lickerish Quartet

“Fadoodle” is a Dover-driven look at how to rekindle the fires of a long-entrenched relationship. “Well, I’m always looking for new ways to say dirty things,” Dover observes with a laugh. “I found a big list of naughty words from back in the day for what people used to denote fornication. It’s fascinating, because this has the distinction of being a pop song that has the world’s oldest slang yet is released in the 21st Century.” Adds Manning, “This one has that eighth-note driving thing that was a big part of the glitter sound of the early punk wave, so it’s got that kind of energy right out of the gate. Thankfully, once we had Eric’s lyric in place, it was just a free-for-all in having fun with the vocal interplay.” 

From the mischievous harmonic invitation of “Fadoodle” to the folk-tinged uplift of “Bluebird’s Blues” to the twangy lamentation of “There Is a Magic Number” to the cosmic muscle of the EP’s first single, “Lighthouse Spaceship,” THREESOME VOL. 1 confirms the communal strengths of a trio of songwriters who have clearly retained an intuitive sense of knowing exactly how to elevate the sum of each other’s musical chops.

You might like if you enjoy: Harry Chapin, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine
Tell me more: Thanks to specialty record labels, many of music's lost treasures have been unearthed for the world to hear. Look no further than Omnivore Recordings' new release featuring the late singer-songwriter Steve Goodman's wonderful Live '69. Recorded in November 1969 when he was only 21, Goodman's hour-plus performance at the University of Illinois featured the rising singer-songwriter/guitarist performing an eclectic setlist of covers treated to his singular style. His treatment of acoustic blues and folk material is deeply affecting, thanks in large part to his strengths as a singer and acoustic guitar master. Opening up with Willie Dixon's "You Can't Judge A Book By Its Cover," he continues to delve into the blues via William Harris' "Bullfrog Blues." His power as a rising great really shows via the driving "Fast Freight," where his guitar work and dynamic vocals help propel the song in tune with the lyrical imagery of a train moving down the tracks. He equally masters Celtic stylings with the traditional "Byker Hill" and "John Barleycorn," the latter delivered via his a capella vocals sans guitar accompaniment. He also revisits classics from Bob Dylan (the driving roots nugget "Country Pie"), Merle Haggard (bolstered by Bob Hoban's harmony vocals), and Terry Fell (the spirited country-fried "Truck Drivin' Man"). Toward the end of his set, he offers up a four-song medley that weaves together diverse material (including the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love") masterfully. Tell me more: Willie Dixon, who passed away in January 1992, is one of the most celebrated blues artists of the 20th century, particularly celebrated for his long parade of original songs covered or adapted by artists ranging from Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Led Zeppelin to the Doors and The Rolling Stones. His list of memorable classics includes "Hoochie Coochie Man," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Little Red Rooster" and "Spoonful." Fast forward to 2020 and it's clear from the authentic Chicago blues unleashed by Willie Dixon's grandson Alex Dixon across the winning The Real McCoy prove that the genre is alive and thriving in the 21st century. Tell me more: The untimely death of singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Adam Schlesinger from complications of COVID-19 on April 1 has rightfully reignited interest in his wonderful power pop troupe Fountains of Wayne. The next best thing to catching the quartet — which was together from 1995 to 2013 — in concert is enjoying the 2009 Shout! Factory-issued title "No Better Place: Live in Chicago." The concert film was the New York City-spawned outfit's first-ever DVD release and offers up energetic versions of 16 of their beloved originals including "Stacy's Mom," "Radiation Vibe," "Sink To The Bottom" and "Red Dragon Tattoo." The Joe Thomas-directed concert film was shot for broadcast in widescreen and recorded in 5.1 Surround, which wasn't always the case in 2005. CLEVELAND, Ohio — In 2018, when Omnivore Recordings put out The Choir’s first-ever full-length platter, no one knew what impact the release of that recording would have. (Note: this Choir is not to be confused with the ’80s SoCal band.)

 

Sure, the group, in its many different manifestations during the ’60s, had released several singles, including a Top 10 smash, 1967’s “It’s Cold Outside,” in its hometown of Cleveland. That song would reach #68 on the Billboard national charts. But the garage rock band — whose many different members went on to form other important bands like Raspberries and the James Gang — had never made an album of their own before.

So 50 years on, when the tapes of an aborted album were found, mixed and released as Artifact: The Unreleased Album to unanimous critical acclaim, the 1968 version of The Choir suddenly found itself back in the limelight with a weighty decision: to reclaim their vision and perform live, back where they came from, the home of rock ’n’ roll, Cleveland, Ohio.

The band plays perfect renditions of material from Artifact, and also dips into their deep bag of influences. This two-disc set, in stores June 5, 2020, also includes remembrances from each member of the band as well as photos from the night of the show.

John Prine remembered by wife Fiona Whelan Prine, Oh Boy Records, Willie Nile...

Over the last several days there has been an outpouring of love and mourning for legendary singer-songwriter/guitarist John Prine following his passing from complications of the coronavirus earlier this week (April 7, 2020)...

First I want to share several affecting emails I have received in my inbox since yesterday and my previous post on John Prine:

John Prine was a great man and a master songwriter. His humility, his humor, his indirect way of circling around the truth and getting to the heart of what it is to be human sets him apart from all the others. Listening to his songs and his understated way of delivering them is a master class on how it’s done and then some. There’s a gracefulness to them that you just can’t fake. There are some things in this world that can’t be taught and his brilliance and his heart on the sleeve of all the characters he wrote about so honestly is a testament to his greatness. 

His kindness and generosity to me when we met is something I will never forget and will carry with me all my days. He was as humble a man as you’ll ever meet and you’ll be a better person for having brushed up against one of his songs. His passing is a great loss to the world of music and to the world at large. It’s a rarity for such a gentle and wise man to pass by this way and his passing is a heartbreak in a world in such great need of a great and tender heart.

God bless John Prine. Rest in peace brother.

It is with heavy hearts we have to share this sad news. Some of you may have already heard, but we wanted to take the time to let you know personally, and to say thank you. Thank you so much for all the well wishes, thoughts, prayers, stories, and songs. They helped us keep going through this tough time, and they will continue to bring us comfort.

Our beloved John died yesterday evening at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville TN. We have no words to describe the grief our family is experiencing at this time. John was the love of my life and adored by our sons Jody, Jack and Tommy, daughter in law Fanny, and by our grandchildren.

John contracted Covid-19  and in spite of the incredible skill and care of his medical team at Vanderbilt he could not overcome the damage this virus inflicted on his body.

I sat with John - who was deeply sedated- in the hours before he passed and will be forever grateful for that opportunity.

My dearest wish is that people of all ages take this virus seriously and follow guidelines set by the CDC. We send our condolences and love to the thousands of other American families who are grieving the loss of loved ones at this time - and to so many other families across the world.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the outpouring of love we have received from family, friends, and fans all over the world. John will be so missed but he will continue to comfort us with his words and music and the gifts of kindness, humor and love he left for all of us to share.
