NEW JIMI HENDRIX ALBUM BOTH SIDES OF THE SKY OUT NOW – WATCH “LOVER MAN” MUSIC VIDEO

March 9 – Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings have released Jimi Hendrix’s new album Both Sides of the Sky today on CD, digital, and as a numbered 180-gram audiophile vinyl 2 LP set. NPR Music recently declared, “No rock figure before or since could breathe fire like Hendrix does, on his beloved well-known albums and on the assortment that is Both Sides of the Sky.” For the occasion, director John Vondracek has created a music video for “Lover Man,” a single from the album.

This previously unissued version of “Lover Man,” which UNCUT deemed “a weaponised piece of funk, with Buddy Miles in particularly thunderous form,” was recorded at the Record Plant in New York on December 15, 1969 by Hendrix’s then recently assembled new band: Billy Cox on bass, Buddy Miles on drums and, of course, Hendrix on guitar and vocals. The session took place two weeks before the trio introduced itself to the world via four triumphant New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day concerts at the Fillmore East, which would ultimately yield the live album Band of Gypsys (1970) as well as its, critically acclaimed follow up, 2016’s Machine Gun. 

Heralded by Relix as “both a historically valuable document . . . and a treat musically,” Both Sides of the Sky, the album home of “Lover Man,” is the third volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in Jimi Hendrix’s archive. It follows Valleys of Neptune (2010) and People, Hell and Angels (2013), which both achieved top 5 chart ranking on Billboard’s Top 100 album chart. Recorded between January 1968 and February 1970, and featuring guest appearances by Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter and Lonnie Youngblood, Both Sides of the Sky contains 10 unreleased tracks. The project was co-produced by Eddie Kramer, Jimi Hendrix’s recording engineer on all of his albums made during his life, along with Janie Hendrix and John McDermott.

In connection with the release of Both Sides of the Sky, an all-star band featuring Hendrix bassist Billy Cox (whose efforts are heard on the album) and blues legend Buddy Guy will be performing a Jimi Hendrix song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this upcoming Tuesday, March 13. The band is rounded out with Experience Hendrix Tour veteran Mato Nanji, Buddy Guy drummer Tim Austin, and the Slide Brothers. 

Partnering with Experience Hendrix is world famous menswear designer John Varvatos. In connection with the album’s release, he has created a Jimi Hendrix Both Sides of the Sky t-shirt featuring exclusive artwork, available to purchase today at John Varvatos stores, online, and with retail partner Bloomingdales. Well, fans, the time has finally come for that next move! ROGER JOSEPH MANNING JR. will release not one, but three pieces of music on May 18 as part of an elaborate PledgeMusic campaign. 

 

A four-song solo EP of brand new songs, GLAMPING, will be available on CD, purple vinyl and digital download. He’s also re-releasing a Deluxe Edition (CD/digital download) of his 2006 LAND OF PURE IMAGINATION album, which will include three bonus tracks: “What You Don’t Know About The Girl,” “Sleep Children,” and “’Til We Meet Again.” These songs were previously included in the album’s counterpart, SOLID STATE WARRIOR, which was only released in Japan. Last, but not least, MANNING’s 2009 CATNIP DYNAMITE will be available as a CD and digital download.

 

The extensive PledgeMusic campaign offers fans a wide selection of exclusive and one-of-a-kind items from MANNING’s personal archives, including outfits worn during his time with Jellyfish. Most notably, the vintage 1960 pants, cape and parasol outfit seen on the cover of their BELLYBUTTON debut album and “The King Is Half Undressed” music video, as well as the crushed velvet zebra 1970s dress coat from the “That Is Why” video. Also available will be promotional materials from his Japanese tours, signed and decorated handwritten lyric sheets, and four different keyboards used throughout his career. "I’m doing it this way as a big experiment,” MANNING explains. “One of the reasons I’ve been most excited about jumping back into doing more original music, and getting back in the saddle again after 10 years of various life trajectories, is due to sites like PledgeMusic, and how they help projects like mine come to fruition. About the songwriting process behind GLAMPING, MANNING says, "It’s very natural and very gratifying for me. I like the architecture and assembly process of it all -- getting a song from its raw form of acoustic piano and vocal into this whole other world. I love that process, even though it can be very time-consuming for someone like me. It’s like putting together a sonic jigsaw puzzle."

 

Upon its release, The Big Takeover described CATNIP DYNAMITE as “…a perfectly strong statement…” While Goldmine hailed, “With CATNIP DYNAMITE, MANNING acrobatically flips from genre to genre, employing classical elements, like strings and such, and the electric-guitar crunch of power-pop to marvelous effect, while building up around it all an ornate architecture of piano and other kinds of keyboards.”

 

About ROGER JOSEPH MANNING JR.:

ROGER JOSEPH MANNING JR. has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a touring keyboardist, most notably with Beck (for the past 22 years), session player, arranger, and producer. His arranging career began in 1989 when he began arranging string, brass, wind and vocal ensembles for his first band, Jellyfish, on Virgin Records which he co-founded. He co-wrote and co-produced the two Virgin releases, BELLYBUTTON and SPILT MILK. Out of the ashes of Jellyfish arose his second co-founded project, Imperial Drag, on Sony's WORK Group label, from 1994-97, which saw overwhelming overseas success, particularly in England and Japan. From 1995-97, he co-founded the all-vintage electronic duo known as The Moog Cookbook. This group was started solely as a means of having a forum to express its love for the bygone era of vintage synthesizers and exotic keyboards. Ultimately, it became his calling card for longtime friend and collaborator, Beck. At this time, MANNING began his almost 20-year and still-active relationship as Beck’s sideman, touring the world and recording upwards of five critically acclaimed albums, including the 2014 album, MORNING PHASE, on which MANNING both played keyboards and sang, won 2015 Grammy® Awards in both the “Best Rock Album” and “Album Of The Year” categories. By 1997, MANNING’s career as a freelance session keyboardist, songwriter, arranger and background vocalist was in full swing. Over the last 20 years, he has contributed keyboards to hundreds of pop/rock albums, played on numerous films and TV soundtracks, composed for commercials and radio spots, enjoyed a long run as a remixer, and toured extensively with other artists. Over the past decade, he has been involved with many large-scale orchestral arranging projects, including Nate Ruess' first band, The Format, and his second band, fun.. His success with Nate Ruess’ projects reawakened MANNING’s love for arranging and more offers soon followed. His arranging career re-launched in 2012 when he was asked to work on Nate's duet with Pink! for the 2012 smash, “Learn to Love Again,” produced by Grammy® Award-winning producer Jeff Bhasker. Later that year, MANNING was invited by producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen to arrange on Paramore’s double-Platinum selling 2012 self-titled release. Since their 1998 debut, Songs for Polarbears, Snow Patrol have racked up an impressive number of critical and commercial accolades, including 15 million global album sales, 1+ billion global track streams, 5 UK Platinum Albums, and are Grammy and Mercury Music Prize nominated. After their Fallen Empires tour ended in 2012, band members —which also include multi-instrumentalist Johnny McDaid, guitarist Nathan Connolly, bassist Paul Wilson, and drummer Jonny Quinn — decided to take a step back from the band, and focus on their own projects. Gary Lightbody continued his work with his Tired Pony side project with members of Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M, Reindeer Section and Fresh Young Fellows and moved to Los Angeles to begin writing songs for movies (including “This Is How You Walk On” for 2017’s Gifted), and doing a number of high-profile co-writes with Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift and One Direction. Taking this extended break from Snow Patrol proved to be a source of inspiration, and writing songs that were not pulled directly from his own psyche helped heal what Lightbody considered to be not so much writer’s block as life block.

It’s in this search for clarity and connection that these songs were written and refined. “I think it’s the first record I’ve ever written that I haven’t just asked a bunch of questions. I actually tried to figure out why I was unhappy, why I feel out of place, why I’m afraid,” says Lightbody. “There’s nothing really to protect myself for-- it’s all in the album. I want to remember.” This impulse was partially inspired by Lightbody’s father, who is suffering from dementia. “I think the album is defined by memory in a lot of ways,” says Lightbody, “including my father’s loss of memory.”

The songs are surefooted, displaying a newfound sense of self and purpose, and the rest of the band members rose magnificently to the occasion. The album is produced once more by the great Jacknife Lee, Snow Patrol’s longtime producer and collaborator. “Life on Earth” opens the album with its mission statement, “this is something else, this is something else.” “Heal Me” feels like an ancient hymn: “Finally, after way too many years of smashing my body to bits with booze, I met someone who helped me find my way back to health and clarity," says Lightbody. “This song is about her, that journey and is dedicated to her.” “Empress,” written for Lightbody’s goddaughters, is fierce and heartfelt, with runaway drums and keen words of wisdom. “What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get?” is a heartstring-puller, posing the question nobody wants to ask. The last track, “Life and Death,” is a rumination, and a human story of love and forgiveness— mostly self-forgiveness for Lightbody, demonstrating that perhaps everyone ought to take this long between albums to reflect long and hard before they write. 

“Seamus Heaney, my favorite poet of all time, said at 71 that he was only discovering what some of his poetry means, and this is coming from a Nobel Prize-winning poet. It’s a great testament to inspiration,” says Lightbody. “Sometimes it takes you five years to write the thing. Like now. And you know for sure when you finish an album like that, where you’ve poured over every detail and put every atom of yourself into it, everything makes sense and I bet you I’m never not proud of this record.”

Todd Rundgren's Utopia Reunites: upcoming tour and special edition box set announcment

Reuniting for First North American Tour in 32 years - Releasing Limited Edition “The Road To Utopia” Box Set

FOR 32 YEARS, FANS HAVE BEEN CLAMORING FOR A REUNION - The wait is over.

No longer able to turn a deaf ear to the unceasing requests from fans and the media alike, Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Willie Wilcox and Ralph Schuckett are reuniting for their first North American tour since the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded. Presented by Sirius XM and produced by Live Nation, TODD RUNDGREN’S UTOPIA will be performing across North America beginning on April 18.

In celebration of the upcoming reunion tour, Friday Music will be releasing a 7-disc box set, THE ROAD TO UTOPIA: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS (1974-82). This limited edition collection will bring each of their seven classic albums to life, now in first-time CD digipak gatefold covers featuring the original album artwork elements, rare inner sleeve art, newly written commentary from the band, and more. Todd Rundgren’s Utopia was formed in 1974 out of Todd’s desire to explore new musical territory. Starting as a prog-rock-progenitor septet the band’s music ranged from extended synth experiments to four-song albums, while their live shows were distinguished by their ahead-of-the-curve video backdrops and computer-generated music.

In 1976 the band evolved into “Utopia”, the shiny mainstream power-pop rock quartet, uniting Todd Rundgren on guitar, Willie Wilcox on drums, Roger Powell on keyboards and Kasim Sulton on bass. Known for their hallmark lyrics, lush inventive background vocals and a voracious appetite for the highest level of musicianship. Utopia became known as the quintessential “musician’s band”. Every member took his turn singing lead on every album, and all songwriting was collaborative.

By 1980, Utopia had developed into a hit-making entity in its own right. Standout Utopia albums included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion, spawning hits including “Rock Love,” “Set Me Free,” “Mated,” and “Love Is The Answer”, which also became a global #1 for England Dan and John Ford Coley.

Utopia’s tours, among the first to aggressively incorporate then-state-of-the-art video technology, produced at Todd’s groundbreaking Utopia Video Studios, featured some of the most lavish and audacious stage productions in rock history. Their headline concerts frequently featured opening acts as future superstars Cheap Trick and The Cars, and the band performed at some of the 70’s most epic rock festivals, including Knebworth Castle in the UK --- once with the Rolling Stones in 1976 and twice with Led Zeppelin in 1979, before a combined audience of over 1,200,000 (amongst them a Who’s Who of rock royalty, including Paul McCartney and David Gilmour) .

Always on the bleeding edge, Utopia chalked up a long history of groundbreaking media “firsts”, including:

• 1978: The first interactive television concert, broadcast live over Warner/QUBE, the experimental interactive cable system in Columbus, Ohio (the home television audience chose each song in real time during the concert by voting via QUBE’s 2-way operating system).
• 1978: The first live nationally broadcast stereo radio rock concert (via microwave), linking 40 cities around the country.
• 1982: The first live national cablecast of a rock concert (on the USA Network), simulcast in stereo to over 120 radio stations.
In 1986, after ten years of non-stop recording and arena touring cycles, the band declared they were “going on sabbatical”, and Todd, Willie, Roger and Kas each embarked on their own career paths.

What’s been happening with the Utopians during the world’s longest ever sabbatical?

Todd Rundgren returned to his stellar solo recording and producing career. His myriad production projects ranged from Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, XTC, and Psychedelic Furs to Grand Funk Railroad, Hall & Oates, and Meat Loaf’s seminal Bat Out Of Hell, while his solo offerings catapulted Todd further into the superstar limelight with hits like “Can We Still be Friends”, and “Bang The Drum”; in addition to his own tours, Todd has been an erstwhile member of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band for the past 28 years.

Kasim Sulton continued touring and recording with a long list of diverse artists including Joan Jett, Hall & Oates, Blue Oyster Cult, Patti Smith, Celine Dion, and Meat Loaf. In 1993 Kasim joined Meat Loaf’s live band after the release of Bat Out Of Hell II, touring extensively and becoming his Musical Director. In 1999 he produced Meat Loaf’s critically acclaimed VH1 Storytellers album. Releasing four solo albums of his own, Kasim has continued his long musical relationship with Todd as the bass player in his solo bands.

Willie Wilcox continued to pursue his songwriting career. Having written songs for & performed with Luther Vandross, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler, Meat Loaf, Hall & Oates, and Kylie Minogue positioned Willie perfectly for his segue into television writing. He was the senior staff composer for NBC Universal in NY for 5 years and composed the current show theme for CNBC’s “Mad Money,” launched a major audio post production facility in Miami with clients MTV & VH1, penned famed boxer Manny Pacquiao’s ring walk music, and continues to maintain his position as senior audio director at Scientific Games, the number one gaming company in the world, where he recently completed the surround sound audio production on the blockbuster Michael Jackson game, “King Of Pop!”

Ralph Schuckett: Ralph’s tenure with Todd Rundgren’s Utopia segued into composing themes & scores for TV & Film including “Kate & Allie” & “Another World.” As chief composer for “4 Kids Productions” he scored numerous feature films & animated TV series including; “Pokémon,” “Yugioh,” “Sonic X,” “Kirby,” & “One Piece.” He has recorded and /or toured with Carole King, Hall & Oates, Whitney Houston, George Benson, and Rodney Crowell, and provided arrangements on recordings for Billy Joel, Michael Bolton. and Joan Osborne. As a songwriter / producer Ralph has worked with Belinda Carlisle, Sophie B. Hawkins, and Clarence Clemons.

As fate would have it, in early April Todd, Kas, Willie and Ralph will find themselves back in Woodstock New York, 32 years later, right where it all started, rehearsing their newest stage spectacle.

Netflix announced today (March 7, 2018) that it has acquired worldwide rights to Paradox, directed by Daryl Hannah, featuring Neil Young + Promise of the Real. The whimsical tale also features new music and performances. The film will world premiere at next week’s SXSW Film Festival on March 15, and will launch globally on Netflix on March 23 and in limited theatrical release.

A fantasy, a loud poem and a free-spirited tale of music and love, Paradox is a one-of-a-kind personal expression. Sometime in the future—or is it the past?—a band of outlaws hide high up in the Mountains. The "Man in the Black Hat" (Neil Young), the "Particle Kid" (Micah Nelson) and "Jail Time" (Lukas Nelson) pass the hours searching for treasure while they wait for the full moon to lend its magic, bring the music and make the spirits fly. Vibrating with original music by Young + Promise of the Real, Paradox furthers the legacy of an iconic performer who has always broken the rules.

Paradox is written and directed by Daryl Hannah, making her feature-length debut behind the camera. Hannah’s "The Last Supper," a 1993 short which she wrote, directed and produced, won a Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. 

"PARADOX sprung up spontaneously and unexpectedly, like a peculiar dandelion, popping up between the cracks in the pavement. We were fortunate to find this brief window of opportunity to share the love for the natural world, each other and for the precious seeds of creativity and life. Paradox features new music from Neil Young + Promise of the Real. Comprised of tracks recorded after the release of 1968's Electric Ladyland, things kick off with an exhilarating reworking of the Muddy Waters blues number "Mannish Boy" recorded during the first-ever studio session with the Band Of Gypsies (bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles). Both Sides Of The Sky is the third volume in a trilogy of albums (that began in 2010 with Valleys of Neptune" and continued with 2013's People, Hell and Angels) featuring the best and most important previously-unissued studio recordings remaining in the Hendrix archives. To be sure, the new set is sure to please both casual and hardcore fans of Hendrix. "Lover Man" features Hendrix delivering some tasty and rapid-fire guitar playing; listen closely and it isn't just the speed of the guitar playing but how much Hendrix's soul is on display as well. His original blues-tinged psychedelic rocker "Hear My Train A-Comin'," the beautiful instrumental "Sweet Angel," jazzy "Jungle" and genre-bending "Power Of Soul" all boast a similar firepower and emotive touch that impresses mightily. One of the most interesting cuts on the disc is a version of Joni Mitchell's then-new song "Woodstock," featuring Stephen Stills on lead vocals and Hendrix on bass guitar; just as lively is "Things I Used To Do" featuring Johnny Winter on slide guitar. "Both Sides Of The Sky" is an essential release that will ultimately prove to be one of the most significant titles of 2018. Joined on select tracks by several well-known guests, the overall Memphis-drenched Americana-soul is further enhanced by New Orleans blues and Nashville-mining country elements. The bluesy "Hammer" features Mississippi harmonica great Charlie Musselwhite; the uptempo "On And On" is buoyed by Rusty Young's pedal steel work. Tell me more: Def Leppard fans have long recognized Phil Collen as one of his generation's most talented electric guitar players, but the artist's heavy-hitting blues project Delta Deep allows for an even greater appreciation of his skills. On the newly-released East Coast Live, Delta Deep (whose line-up includes Collen, Stone Temple Pilot's Robert DeLeo on bass guitar, frontwoman Debbi Blackwell-Cook and drummer Forrest Robinson) unleash a decidedly strong approach in a mix that is rooted in the blues but will appeal to fans of classic rock too. Opening with a fiery take on Led Zeppelin's 1971 classic "Black Dog," other highlights include "Miss Me," Motown-tinged "Treat Her Like Candy," the rock 'n' soul foray "Private Number" and a heavy reworking of the 1940s blues cut "Black Coffee." Tell me more: For fans of Moby's groundbreaking 1999 album Play and 2002's equally-enthralling 18, the artist's newly-released Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt is a welcome return to a focus on emotion-charged material blending electronica, trip-hop and soul. The songs here explode with hypnotic layers of musical textures and inviting vocals; the lyrical themes are meaningful, spanning introspective explorations of the modern world to spirituality and seemingly everything in between. "Like a Motherless Child" features Moby's spoken word confessional in the verses, artfully balanced by a gospel vocalist's elegiac singing in the choruses. "This Wild Darkness" is equally gorgeous and melancholic, with a gospel chorus adding a spiritual element. Everywhere Moby's approach invites the listener to delve beyond the intoxicating moodscape to listen and connect on a more weighty level. "The Middle Is Gone" begins with Moby's declaration of doubt and unfulfilled dreams; the song builds slowly with a symphonic touch before everything closes on a single low note. The sparse "Falling Rain and Light" recalls some of GoGo Penguin's recent work, albeit with swirling airy voices that embellish the lush arrangement. Tell me more: Ali McManus' debut album Unbreakable is truly a triumph. The talented 21-year-old singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is also an inspirational speaker and for good reason. Confined to a wheelchair since the age of 7 (because of a rare bone disorder) and giving powerful voice to her original songs despite having only 30 percent of normal lung capacity, the Detroit native's songs are straightforward and affecting. The title track on her Unbreakable EP is infectious, but the sense of melancholy gives the lyrics added depth: "I am what I am / And I love where I stand / Yeah, I can't stand for long / But I'm goin' strong / I'm Unbreakable." Produced by the legendary Jack Douglas (who served as engineer on John Lennon's "Imagine" and many of Aerosmith's best-known albums in the 1970s), "Unbreakable" also features the uptempo "Wings," contemplative "Heart Shattered," winning "Breaking Free" and lovely "Home." March 6, 2018 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Lakeshore Records and Invada Records will co-release You Were Never Really Here—Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring a score by Academy Award-nominated composer Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread, There Will Be Blood).  The Amazon Studios film was written and directed by Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher, Morvern Caller), and won awards at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix).  It’s the second time the Radiohead guitarist/keyboardist has collaborated with Ramsay having composed the score for We Need To Talk About Kevin.  Greenwood weaves his talents on synthesizers, drum machines, recorders and guitars alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra and experimental string player Ollie Coates (Under the Skin) to create a compelling backdrop to the intense and harrowing thriller.   The soundtrack will be released digitally in North America by Lakeshore Records and in the UK/Europe by Invada Records March 9^th.  CD and vinyl versions forthcoming.  Amazon Studios will release the film in select theaters April 6^th. 

 

Based on a book by Jonathan Ames, Ramsay’s fourth film stars Phoenix as Joe--a traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, who tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe's nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.

 

Says Greenwood in NME on approaching Ramsay to collaborate: “I wrote to Lynne before finding out about the film and basically hustled her for a job. Asked her if she was working on anything, and if so, whether she needed music. She said she was working on a ‘noir story in NYC.’ I’m a huge fan of her films, and was just keen to be involved with her again. We worked together on her last one, We need to talk about Kevin, so I had a good ‘in’.”

Born in Glasgow, Lynne Ramsay is considered one of Britain's most original and exciting voices working in Independent cinema today. 

 

Her latest film You Were Never Really Here, starring Joaquin Phoenix, premiered at Cannes this year to critical acclaim, with Lynne winning the Best Screenplay award and Joaquin winning the award for Best Actor. The film received its North American premiere at Sundance Film Festival in 2018.

 

We Need to Talk About Kevin was the only British film nominated for the Palm d'Or in official competition in 2011.
