Daryl Hall & John Oates, Train and Kandace Springs bring rock 'n' soul to Honda Center in Anaheim

A night of feel good rock 'n' soul delivered via two established hit makers and one rising newcomer made for a full night of fun at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Sunday night (May 6, 2018).

Performing a 90+ minute set stacked with audience favorites, Daryl Hall & John Oates delighted the Honda Center from the moment they took the stage, opening with the infectious "Maneater." Backed by a terrific six-member band, the famed duo offered their parade of hits with versions that were at times mostly-faithful to the radio versions but more often provided extended and playful extended takes bolstered by the instrumental firepower of the musicians on stage. So with "Maneater," an early standout was a dueling lead solos between Oates on electric guitar and long-time sax player Charles DeChant.

The lush vocal harmonies and more intricate guitar work and Hall's obvious talents as a soulful vocalist enhanced "Out of Touch." An especially potent version of the duo's 1983 hit "Say It Isn't So" featured some of Hall's most affecting lead vocals of the night; the track ended with an artful blend of Hall, Oates and Shane Theriot all offering up lead guitar work together.

Material spanning from the early '70s to 2018 was featured this night. The duo's delightful cover of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" (recorded by Hall & Oates in 1980) with both singers sharing lead vocal duties, and "She's Gone" (originally featured on the 1973 album Abandoned Luncheonette) were other early highlights of their set.

Reaching beyond their biggest hits, the duo reached back to their third album (1974's War Babies) to perform the rousing jazz-meets-rock track "Is It a Star?" Featuring all kinds of cool atmospheric guitar work and smooth sax textures, it was a definite sharp addition to the set list.

One of the things that has really set this summer tour apart was how Hall & Oates have really embraced the spirit of Hall's "Live from Daryl's House" TV series in the concert setting. Train's Pat Monahan (a previous guest on the popular series in 2010) joined the duo onstage for a mini-set that was an audience favorite.

Kicking off this mini-set with their recent collaboration "Philly Forget Me Not," the single was even more impressive live with the mix of vocals than on the new recording. Next came the beautiful "Wait For Me," a lovely ballad featuring Monahan and Hall sharing lead vocals, with Hall's work on the grand piano anchoring the song. Finally, Hall introduced "Calling All Angels" acknowledging it as one of his favorite Train songs. The selection was powerful, complete with the sharing of voices and big choruses (locals love the song; "Calling All Angels" is played with a video montage of key moments in the team's history before every home game at Angel Stadium in Anaheim).

Then it was Hall & Oates and company in the limelight for several of their biggest hits including the dance-minded "Kiss On My List" and equally catchy "Private Eyes." The encore provided more highlights ("Rich Girl," "You Make My Dreams") for the enthusiastic audience.

Train opened for Hall & Oates with a 65-minute set featuring some of the band's greatest hits, a forthcoming single ("Call Me Sir") and a faithful cover of Led Zeppelin's "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)." Among the best performances was the rollicking old-styled rocker "Save Me San Francisco, breezy folk rocker "Angel in Blue Jeans" and "Meet Virginia." Train closed out their set with the propulsive dance-rock track "Drive By" and introspective "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)."

Opening the night was rising singer-songwriter-keyboardist Kandace Springs, who blended R&B, jazz, pop and soul over 30 minutes. A guest on "Live from Daryl's House" in 2015, Springs delivered an impressive set of material where she was backed by a drummer and bass player. In addition to her own soulful songs, she offered up poignant covers of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" and Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." Tell me more: Legendary singer-songwriter Buzz Cason is back. Best known as the writer of "Everlasting Love" (recorded by a number of artists including U2) and "Soldier of Love" (covered by the Beatles), the 77-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist is back with a fantastic new album, aptly titled Passion. Cason has absorbed a myriad of influences and experiences that give life to the songs on the disc, with the uplifting title track, the blues rocker "Bread" (an especially lively song thanks to a propulsive beat and blasts of harmonica), power pop-meets-garage rock foray "Walkin'," and playful "Just As Gone" among the many winners here. The disc's final song "We Soldiered On" offers a fitting reflection on youth and following dreams; the song is powerful and free of cliche. Information: buzzcason.com.

Tell me more: There is an honesty and real world slant that enhances each of the 11 songs on Lawrence Morrill Glass' latest album Neanderthal, yet another masterwork out of the burgeoning Austin, Texas original music scene. It is amazing to hear how different each of these songs sound from each other, yet how well Glass' voice and literate talents  weave together the works into a coherent whole. The wry "Tina Fey," melancholy-drenched "No Christmas This Year," "reggae-styled "It Wasn't Love" and traditional country ballad "Believe" cast their spell quickly, and that's a good thing. “The moment that we were first reached with an invitation to contribute a song to Amazon's holiday playlist, the two of us were en route through an autumnal rain from the big city to the mystic hamlet of Woodstock, NY. Eager to participate and knowing time was short, we pulled guitars from the bay of our small touring bus and almost without second thought heard ourselves join voices as we bounced along, rehearsing as we traveled what proved to be the only choice of song - not only for us as songwriters of the broader folk tradition, but as world citizens desirous of navigating these treacherous times with a nod to both trembling and optimism: Merle Haggard's seminal blue-collar Christmas meditation, ‘If We Make It Through December’” explain Billy Bragg and Joe Henry.

SiriusXM announced today that iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and three-time Grammy-Award winner Brian Setzer and his 19-piece The Brian Setzer Orchestra will perform an exclusive invitation-only concert for SiriusXM listeners in New York Cityon Tuesday, November 29. This private concert-to air on SiriusXM's Outlaw Country and Holly channels--is part of The Brian Setzer Orchestra's in-progress 13th annual "Christmas Rocks!" tour, presented by SiriusXM (full itinerary here). In December of last year, The Brian Setzer Orchestra also performed an exclusive invitation-only concert for SiriusXM listeners in New York City.

Such is the case with the fantastic From The Vault: The Marquee – Live in 1971 issued by Eagle Rock Entertainment on June 23 and available on a number of formats (DVD/SD Blu-ray/audio CD) and iTunes. Featuring the line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, the British band tore through an eight-song set list that including burning rockers ("Let It Rock," "Bitch," "Brown Sugar"), rock 'n' blues ("I Got The Blues," "Midnight Ramble"), as well as a tender version of "Dead Flowers." The performances (I'm reviewing the 2-disc DVD/CD version) here are scorching; "Midnight Rambler" scorches with Jagger's blues harp work and the one-two guitar attack of Richards and Taylor, while "Bitch" flat out rocks. The DVD features a number of outstanding bonus features including several takes of the rarely-heard "I Got The Blues" and a performance of "Brown Sugar" the band performed on the TV program "Top Of The Pops." With the footage completely restored, and sound mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, The Marquee – Live in 1971 is a must-have release for Stones fans. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Now the band's second golden age is fully captured via Axis XXX – Live in San Francisco. Sights and Sounds: Jon Lord, Dream Theater, 'Front and Center' returns, New 'Music Worth Buying' episode

New York, NY (August 15, 2013)--On September 3, earMUSIC and Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the first studio recording of Jon Lord's Concerto For Group And Orchestra. Originally released in September 2012 on CD (earMusic/Eagle Rock), this groundbreaking meeting of rock and classical music will now be released as a Blu-ray/CD set and double vinyl. [MSRP $19.98 Blu-ray/CD, $24.98 2LP]

 

The recording of this incredible album began in June 2011 in Liverpool. Lord, the marvelous rhythm section of Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, Madonna) andBrett Morgan (Jon Anderson, Sting) with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (with whom Jon had recorded twice before) were conducted by Paul Mann. The production then moved to Abbey Road Studios in London to record Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson (on vocals withSteve Balsamo and Kasia Laska) and Joe Bonamassa, Darin Vasilev and Steve Morse on guitars.

Happily, Jon got to hear and approve the final mixes a few weeks before he passed away. The family and earMUSIC decided to proceed with the release of the album in September 2012 as scheduled, as this seemed the best way to celebrate and pay tribute to Jon and his beautiful music. Thus this superb studio recording of Concerto For Group And Orchestra is exactly the way Jon wanted us to hear it and will now hopefully become Jon's legacy for generations to come.

 “Over these last years since leaving Deep Purple, I’ve played it over 30 times with different orchestras and conductors all over the world, and, of course, in 2000 I did it well over 30 times with Purple on the Concerto tour, so I’ve been honing the piece live on stage, and I’ve had the opportunity to change things in the score that weren’t sounding quite right. It is therefore a marvelous and exciting prospect to have the definitive recording of the definitive version of the score.”

With his legendary organ blues-rock sound, Deep Purple’s founder Jon Lord has influenced decades of rock musicians. He is with no doubt the pioneer of fusing rock and classical/baroque forms and became one of the most important composers of the last few decades. Jon Lord co-wrote many of Deep Purple’s legendary songs including “Smoke On The Water” and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career (Whitesnake, Paice Ashton Lord, George Harrison). Best known for his orchestral work Concerto For Group And Orchestra was first performed and recorded at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969, conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold - a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.

 

Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from Deep Purple in 2002 but he continued to tour the Concerto around the world to sell outs and standing ovations.

THE LONG-AWAITED CONCERT FILM FROM TOP NAME IN PROGRESSIVE METAL CAPTURED OVER TWO NIGHTS FROM BUENOS AIRES

NEW YORK, NY (August 15, 2013) – SpectiCast and Eagle Rock Entertainment are once again collaborating to distribute the long-awaited DREAM THEATER: LIVE AT LUNA PARK concert film to theatres worldwide beginning Thursday, September 19, 2013.  This anticipated cinematic event was captured over two nights during the final leg of the band’s 15-month “A Dramatic Turn Of Events” world tour, which hit 35 countries. DREAM THEATER: LIVE AT LUNA PARK was filmed in Buenos Aires, Argentina – home to one of Dream Theater’s most ardent fan-bases.

DREAM THEATER: LIVE AT LUNA PARK runs for 160 minutes and features many of Dream Theater’s classic tracks, including, “Metropolis Pt. 1,” “The Silent Man,” “Pull Me Under,” “The Root Of All Evil,” “The Test That Stumped Them All,” “The Spirit Carries On,” and the recent track “On The Backs Of Angels.” Dream Theater formed in 1985 under the name Majesty and has remained a top name in progressive metal ever since.
