JD Souther Announces You’re Only Lonely
Reissue on LP and Expanded CD/Digital out July 26
via Omnivore Recordings

Features guest appearances from members of the Eagles, Jackson Browne, David Sanborn, John Sebastian, Phil Everly, Tom Scott, and more

June 17, 2024
: Today, Songwriters Hall Of Fame inductee JD Souther announced a reissue of his classic third album, You’re Only Lonely, out July 26 through Omnivore Recordings.

The 9-track LP returns for the first time in 35 years, and the CD and Digital add two previously unissued bonus tracks from the album’s sessions. New liner notes from Joe Marchese (The Second Disc) feature an interview with JD outlining the recording of the album, the all-star players, and why it is an important record to him and the fans who have supported it for all these years.

“We always said our motto was ‘we’re building to last.’ We really spent a lot of time on the songs. The other motto was, ‘no filler.’ You don’t make a single and then put a bunch of filler on an album. You make an album and hope you have a single.” You’re Only Lonely epitomizes that ethos. It’s built to last.

By 1979, JD Souther had quickly established himself as the consummate singer/songwriter and performer - penning hits for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor, while delivering two now-essential releases for David Geffen’s Asylum Records. (Both John David Souther and Black Rose have been expanded and reissued by Omnivore Recordings.) He assembled an A-list band (Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Don Grolnick on piano, Kenny Edwards on bass, and Rick Marotta on drums, with Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar also contributing on guitar, David Sanborn on alto saxophone, and Dan Dugmore on guitar and steel) for his debut on Columbia Records.

You’re Only Lonely appeared at the end of that year and the title track stormed up the charts. “You’re Only Lonely” spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts and was a #7 Pop hit. The album itself was a critical success, hitting #41 on the LP charts. Billboard praised the LP as a “predominantly mellow, atmospheric collection of tunes . . . Souther’s guitar playing takes a backseat to his writing, with many of the tunes here among his best.” (From the new liner notes) “It was quite a good Christmas,” JD laughs. “’You’re Only Lonely’ and ‘Heartache Tonight’ (co-written by JD, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, and Bob Seger) were both in the top ten the same week. It was pretty amazing.”

You’re Only Lonely contains JD’s versions of tracks previously recorded by Linda Ronstadt (“White Rhythm And Blues” from Living In The USA), Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (“The Moon Turned Blue” from Dream) and Nicolette Larson (“The Last In Love” from her debut Nicolette), plus “Trouble In Paradise” (the title track of the second Souther-Hillman-Furay Band album).

GRAMMY Museum presents Take Me Out To The Ball Game: Popular Music And The National Pastime

Play ball! Anything that celebrates both music and Baseball is cool with me...

GRAMMY MUSEUM® PRESENTS 'TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME: POPULAR MUSIC AND THE NATIONAL PASTIME'

NEW EXHIBIT SHOWCASES MUSIC'S INTEGRAL HISTORY IN THE BASEBALL EXPERIENCE

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (FEB. 6, 2019) — Whether it's the national anthem played before every game, the music ballplayers select to accent their "walk up" to home plate, or the seventh inning stretch when fans sing "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," music is an integral part of the baseball experience. To celebrate the soundtrack of our national pastime, the GRAMMY Museum® proudly presents Take Me Out To The Ball Game: Popular Music And The National Pastime. The exhibit will open on March 14, when Bob Santelli, Founding Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum and the exhibit’s curator, will discuss the history of music in baseball with Barry Zito at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater as part of the Museum's Public Programs. The exhibit will run through baseball season until fall 2019.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game: Popular Music And The National Pastime will offer insight and historical reference for the history of music in baseball. The exhibit takes you on a journey starting before the 20th century when interest in baseball-themed music was fostered through the sales of sheet music, then explains the rise of baseball songs becoming a part of a new era of American music in the early 1900s, to current day popular music being a central part of players preparing to take the field and excite the fans. All forms of music, from pop and jazz, to country, R&B, and rock and roll embraced America's baseball passion and are reflected throughout the exhibit.

Edward Meeker and The Edison Orchestra's original 1908 recording of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame
® this year.

“Baseball and popular music have been practically inseparable for the past century and a half,” said Santelli. “Hundreds of songs have been written about the national pastime. And today, with ballplayers personally selecting walk-up-to-the-batter’s-box-music and with retired players like Barry Zito and Bernie Williams actually launching music careers, the baseball-music connection is stronger than ever.”

Exhibit highlights include:

•    Sheet music from the game's early years, including “Take Me Out To The Ball Game”
•    Handwritten lyrics to baseball classics, such as James Taylor’s “Angels Of Fenway”
•    Special edition Fender guitars, including the brand new Jackie Robinson Telecaster
•    MLB sportscaster Harry Caray’s microphone
•    Limited edition posters, vinyl records, and photographs

Tickets to the GRAMMY Museum are available for sale at www.grammymuseum.org.

New music: Colin Hay, Laurence Juber, Old 97's, Livingston Taylor

Discerning listeners who love top-tier songwriting performed by engaging artists will want to get a listen to the latest album releases from singer-songwriter Colin Hay, fingerstyle guitarist Laurence Juber, alt-country rockers Old 97's and tunesmith Livingston Taylor.

Artist: Colin Hay
Title: Fierce Mercy (Compass Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Colin Hay, Bruce Cockburn,
Tell me more: Colin Hay has an innate ability to write and perform songs that entice musically while effortlessly forcing the listener to think. On his latest masterwork Fierce Mercy, the acclaimed singer-songwriter uses a batch of original songs (several co-written with Michael Georgiades) that explore life from the insightful perspective that the majority of life's days are in the rear view mirror. But Hay's Fierce Mercy is no downbeat lament; there is a rich tapestry of both sonic and lyrical textures. The disc's soundscape blends folk-rock, jazz, Americana and more while the richly-drawn lyrics aim at the everyday triumphs and tragedies that define people's lives. "A Thousand Million Reasons" is a gorgeous and subtle song that taps into the powerful genesis of love. "She Was the Love of Mine" finds the singer celebrating the life of his late mother. "Frozen Fields of Snow" is a deeply-affecting song written by Hay that looks at the life of a military veteran outside the narrow confines of a battlefield tale. The deluxe edition of Fierce Mercy includes three outstanding bonus tracks providing even more great reasons to get a wonderful album. Hay is currently on tour and has a number of upcoming dates in the U.S. before he travels to the United Kingdom and Australia. Information: ColinHay.com.

Artist: Laurence Juber
Title: LJ Can't Stop Playing The Beatles! (HoLoGram Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, Muriel Anderson, Pete Huttlinger
Tell me more: On the aptly-titled LJ Can't Stop Playing The Beatles! two-time Grammy winning guitarist Laurence Juber thankfully delivers on the promise of the disc's title with 14 articulate and fully-realized acoustic arrangements of Fab Four compositions (including two by George Harrison). There are uptempo takes ("She Loves You," "Ticket to Ride"), elegiac sorties ("And Your Bird Can Sing," "Day Tripper," "And I Love Her") and beautiful arrangements that dazzle ("Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "I'll Follow the Sun"). Several of the more interesting renderings on the collection include the ambitious "Hey Bulldog" and playful "Honey Pie." The groundbreaking fingerstyle guitarist will perform as part of the Lord of the Strings concert series with dates at the Dana Point Community House in Dana Point, CA, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 10, and at the Mission Viejo Civic Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 11. Tickets for either concert are $30. Juber will be selling and autographing copies of his new album at the concerts. Information: HologramRecordings.com or LaurenceJuber.com.

Artist: Old 97's
Title: Graveyard Whistling (ATO Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Rhett Miller, Wilco, Supersuckers
Tell me more: On their newly-released album Graveyard Whistling, the Old 97's unleash a batch of potent songs that mine well-traveled trails celebrating romance, life in small towns, the thrill of playing music and the joys of having a good drink. Since emerging in Dallas, Texas in 1993, the quartet has recorded a slew of great albums filled with memorable songs that stand the test of time; that formula is firmly intact on the 11-track Graveyard Whistling. There are rollicking alt-country rockers such as the confessional "Good With God" and the raucous "Drinkin' Song." The Old 97's can disarm with the most lovely of songs, as evidenced by the beautiful "Bad Luck Charm" with singer Rhett Miller's reflective delivery and the band's nuanced performance; on "All Who Wander" the band explores similar sonic territory with equal melodic prowess. The group also makes a joyful detour on the Celtic-flavored "Irish Whiskey Pretty Girls." The Old 97's are currently on tour in support of Graveyard Whistling, and will be performing a string of shows in Southern California later this month, including at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on March 29 and at the Fonda Theatre in Hollywood on March 30. Information: old97s.com.

Artist: Livingston Taylor
Title: Safe Home (Chesky Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Randy Newman, James Taylor
Tell me more: It's impressive that singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor's new album Safe Home was recorded as part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, a cutting-edge process that finds albums recorded with a single microphone while ultimately providing listeners with an expansive and multi-dimensional recording. The jazz-styled original "I Must Be Doing Something Right" has the wonderful feel of a timeless American Standard, and Taylor's warm baritone delivers the song with authentic warmth. Taylor is surrounded by a top-flight group of musicians on the album, including Shelly Berg (piano), David Finck (bass), Bashiri Johnson (percussion) and Chelsea Berry (vocals). There are also a number of great reworkings of cover material on the disc; a completely novel take on the Beatles' "Penny Lane" is among the memorable songs covered. And although there have been countless versions of composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E.Y. Harburg's "Over the Rainbow," the version here (sung by Chelsea Berry and Taylor as a duet) is eloquently and artistically introduced by a reworked version of "Merry Old Land Of Oz" (another great song introduced in the enduring 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz"). Legacies of The Rolling Stones, Carole King, Asia celebrated on new multi-format releases

Fans of The Rolling Stones, Carole King and Asia have to celebrate the release of highly-anticipated multi-format titles that have all found their release on June 23.

Artist: The Rolling Stones
Title: From The Vault: The Marquee – Live in 1971 (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: The Rolling Stones' 1970s recordings
Tell me more: What's not to love about a highly sought-after club performance that caught The Rolling Stones at the height of their creative powers? Such is the case with the fantastic From The Vault: The Marquee – Live in 1971 issued by Eagle Rock Entertainment on June 23 and available on a number of formats (DVD/SD Blu-ray/audio CD) and iTunes. Featuring the line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman, the British band tore through an eight-song set list that including burning rockers ("Let It Rock," "Bitch," "Brown Sugar"), rock 'n' blues ("I Got The Blues," "Midnight Ramble"), as well as a tender version of "Dead Flowers." The performances (I'm reviewing the 2-disc DVD/CD version) here are scorching; "Midnight Rambler" scorches with Jagger's blues harp work and the one-two guitar attack of Richards and Taylor, while "Bitch" flat out rocks. The DVD features a number of outstanding bonus features including several takes of the rarely-heard "I Got The Blues" and a performance of "Brown Sugar" the band performed on the TV program "Top Of The Pops." With the footage completely restored, and sound mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain, The Marquee – Live in 1971 is a must-have release for Stones fans. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Title: A MusiCares Tribute to Carole King (Shout! Factory)
You might like if you enjoy: Carole King, Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys, James Taylor
Tell me more: One of the most influential and successful women in music, it's no wonder a once-in-a-lifetime of artists gathered to celebrate singer-songwriter-keyboardist Carole King when she was honored as MusiCares Person of the Year in Los Angeles on Jan. 24, 2014. Now A MusiCares Tribute to Carole King is available on Blu-ray and DVD, with the original event fully delivering on the promise of its parade of artists. There is a wide-range of performances that play out during the special event, with the teaming of Miguel and Kacey Musgraves on "Crying in the Rain" (a King-penned hit for the Everly Brothers) and a five-song finale set featuring King (including "Up On The Roof" with James Taylor) among the most memorable moments.  Information: shoutfactory.com.

Artist: Asia
Title: Axis XXX – Live in San Francisco (Frontiers Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Asia, Yes, John Wetton
Tell me more: When singer-bassist John Wetton rejoined Asia in 2006 it marked a remarkable renaissance for the legendary quartet with the original line-up of Wetton, guitarist Steve Howe, keyboardist Geoff Downes and drummer Carl Palmer re-teaming to release a trio of truly outstanding studio discs (2008's Phoenix, 2010's Omega and 2012's XXX). Now the band's second golden age is fully captured via Axis XXX – Live in San Francisco. Recorded at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco on Nov. 7, 2012, the 18-track set caught Asia performing one of its final concerts before the departure of Howe in January 2013. Throughout the career-spanning Axis XXX, Asia was on the top of its game and unleashed a wonderful mix of '80s classics ("Only Time Will Tell," "Sole Survivor," "Heat Of The Moment"), prog-rock firepower ("Wildest Dreams," "Holy War"), several classical-styled guitar instrumentals featuring Howe ("Pyramidology," "Golden Mean") and affecting new songs (the propulsive "Tomorrow The World," uplifting rocker "Face on the Bridge" and anthemic "An Extraordinary Life" are standouts).
