New music: Jeffrey Foskett, Paul Weller, the Alexis P. Suter Band, Allison August

In this column I feature four audio titles worthy of discovery, including a wonderful tribute to the late Jeffrey Foskett as well as the latest albums from Paul Weller, the Alexis P.  Suter Band and songstress Allison August.

Artists:
Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Wilson, Robert Lamm, Mike Love, more
Title: Something There — Remembering Jeffrey Foskett (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, America, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Foskett was a beloved figure for his work with The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, as well as high-profile collaborations with fellow music greats and his solo work. Sadly, following a lengthy battle with throat cancer, Foskett died in December 2023. Now Omnivore Recordings has issued
Something There — Remembering Jeffrey Foskett, an outstanding 25-track tribute that celebrates the wide-ranging career and immense talent of the Southern California native. Among the tracks on the collection are several key Foskett recordings ("I Live For The Sun," "Everybody," "Something There"), rare collaborations with Robert Lamm of Chicago and Christopher Cross, and previously-unissued joint projects with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, America and Los Straitjackets. Among this writer's favorite cuts on the set are the propulsive power pop opener "Tell Me," the previously-unheard "Thru My Window" (a Beach Boys-flavored gem originally released in 1996), the shimmering "Mary Honey" (a previously-unissued nugget produced by Foskett, Wilson and Gary Griffin in 1994 but heard for the first time here), the breezy melodic sortie "You Remind Me Of The Sun," folk rocker "Cool And Gone," and "Living Alone" — the latter an infectious collaboration between Foskett and Lamm. Artist:
Paul Weller
Title: Find El Dorado (Warner Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Noel Gallagher
Tell me more: Paul Weller's forthcoming album Finding El Dorado (available on July 24, 2025 courtesy of Warner Records) is an ambitious collection of cover versions that have influenced and ultimately led the beloved artist to record these 15 tracks via artfully reworked versions that honor the originals while showcasing Weller's singular sonic approach. Weller's well-known talents are bolstered on the Steve Cradock-produced recordings by a handful of top-tier guests. Early standouts on the collection include the nuanced cover of Richie Havens' "Handouts In The Rain" that finds Weller trading lead vocals with Declan O'Rourke, a lavish acoustic reading of Eamon Friel's "El Dorado" with Weller's potent vocals enhanced by Noel Gallagher's expressive acoustic guitar work, a shimmering take on the Merle Haggard-penned Flying Burrito Brothers classic "White Line Fever" and Brian Protheroe's stark "Pinball." The strength and diversity of the album's track listing continues via a poignant strings-swept version of The Bee Gees' "I Started A Joke," rootsy groove-infused version of The Guerrillas' "Lawdy Rolla" and many other powerful selections; Robert Plant (lead / backing vocals & harmonica on "Clive's Song") and Amelia Coburn (vocals on "One Last Cold Kiss") are among the other guests who appear on the highly-anticipated disc. Artist:
The Alexis P. Suter Band
Title: Just Stay High (Nola Blue Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Buddy Guy, Marcus King
Tell me more: The Alexis P. Suter Band's latest collection Just Stay High is a powerful and authentic celebration of the blues, steeped in both the traditional and modern stylings of the genre across 14 winning tracks. The opener "God Gave Me The Blues" showcases singer Alexis P. Suter's forceful vocals on the Jimmy Bennett-penned anthem (Bennett also delivers some outstanding guitar work on the track). The gospel-flavored "Some People" is bolstered by Vicki Bell's vocals and a wonderfully nuanced approach by the band. Other memorable songs on the album include the fiery "Breathe," ferocious electric Chicago-blues styled "Be On Your Way," a soulful take on Ron Davies' "It Ain't Easy" and the blues rocker "Ride All Night." The troupe also shines on a potent cover of Leon Russell's "Song For You." A project whose roots date back to the pandemic and initial writing sessions that took place via Zoom, Just Stay High showcases the triumphant nature that marked how so many musicians overcame the dangers of COVID at the beginning of this decade. Artist:
Allison August
Title: August Moon (MoMojo Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Janiva Magness, Bonnie Raitt
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Allison August's latest August Moon features a dozen cuts showcasing her strong soprano and compelling original material blending blues, soul, R&B and even jazz. Her wonderful songwriting takes aim at everything from relationships and religion to motherhood and battling cancer. Highlights include the funk-tinged "Afraid of Love," immersive blues track "Dashboard Madonna" that looks at the good and bad in Los Angeles with artistic candor, jazzy delight "What Would Mama Say," sparse blues ballad "Desiree," catchy uptempo frisk "Dog In You" and look back when she and friend Paul Barrere were both battling cancer via "The Cure." The album closes out with the sumptuous uptempo blues foray "Born Yesterday," a statement of how to soar even when the odds are against you. Information: allisonaugust.com.

New Music: 'California Music,' Dirty Honey, Cole Quest and the City Pickers, West of Texas

Veteran and rising artists revisit the classic sounds of the past with their own masterful modern-day touch.

Artists:
Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, David Marks, Jeffrey Foskett, more
Title: California Music Presents Add Some Music (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Mike Love
Tell me more: The enduring sounds of The Beach Boys and dreams of better times are celebrated across a special collection titled California Music Presents Add Some Music. A multi-focused effort spearheaded by album co-producer David Beard (editor and publisher of Endless Summer Quarterly, The Beach Boys publication of record), the 10-track collection teams up members of The Beach Boys and their children along with other family members to revisit classic songs while simultaneously  raising money for the non-profit Feeding America. The first jewel on the collection is the lead-off "Add Some Music to Your Day," a oft-overlooked Beach Boys track (the original version was featured on 1970's Sunflower) revisited by Beach Boy members Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks, as well as Carnie and Wendy Wilson (Brian Wilson's daughters), Christian, Hayleigh and Ambha Love (Mike Love's children), Justyn Wilson (son of the late Carl Wilson), and Matt Jardine (son of Al Jardine); the new reading of the song was arranged and produced by Rob Bonfiglio (husband of Carnie Wilson). Love leads an exploration of world music stylings on "Ram Raj," the intoxicating cut bolstered by the lead guitar work of Laurence Juber (of Paul McCartney's Wings fame) and keyboards of Jim Cox. Jardine's distinctive tenor takes flight on his new chamber pop original "Jenny Clover." Johnston sings and adds his own vocal harmonies while handling all instrumentation on the tender ballad "She Believes in Love Again." Bonfiglio adds a welcome shot of tuneful ear candy via his "Golden State." California Music Presents Add Some Music is a wonderful celebration to the 60th anniversary of The Beach Boys to be sure. Artist:
Dirty Honey
Title: Dirty Honey (Dirt Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Aerosmith, Greta Van Fleet, AC/DC, Humble Pie
Tell me more: Los Angeles-based Dirty Honey have arrived with their full-length, self-titled debut and the album fully delivers on the promise of the quartet's March 2019 EP (which spawned the single "When I'm Gone," the first unsigned band to ever earn a number 1 track on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart). The eight-track album recalls the style and sound of "Rocks"-era Aerosmith, but there is a modern edge that separates Dirty Honey from its musical ancestors. There is a myriad of catchy riff rock on the disc, all of it wrapped up with forceful songcraft and rock musicianship courtesy of the collective talents of singer Marc Labelle, guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian and drummer Corey Coverstone. The nimble "California Dreamin'," Zepplinesque "Take My Hand," heavy "No Warning" and zippy "The Morning" are among the irresistible rock cuts on the album. The group delivers a poignant bluesy rock ballad, "Another Last Time," with emotional heft courtesy of Labelle's sweet rasp and some sublime backing gospel-styled vocals in the choruses. Information: DirtyHoney.com.

Artist:
Cole Quest and the City Pickers
Title: Cole Quest and the City Pickers (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Steel Wheels, Old Crow Medicine Show, Sons and Brothers
Tell me more: Great lead and harmony vocals, stellar musicianship and excellent songs add up to a whole lot of magic on the eponymous release from New York City-based troupe Cole Quest and the City Pickers. Quest, the grandson of Woody Guthrie, leads the collective on a fast-paced journey sure to please fans of bluegrass music. A gorgeous take on the lovely Woody Guthrie/Billy Bragg song "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key" features Quest's strong vocals amidst an artful backdrop of acoustic guitar, dancing harmonica, banjo, bass and Hammond B3 organ. Quest's original acoustic ballad "My Sweet Little Girl" showcases his own talents as a songwriter along with the nuanced musical skills of the ensemble. The quick "7-11/ Foggy Mountain Rock" allows the ensemble of players to really cut loose. The exhilarating "If I Still Had You" closes out the outstanding EP. The City Pickers' excellent lineup includes guitarist-vocalist Christian Apuzzo, harmonica great Matheus Verardino, banjo player Mike Mulhollan, bassist Larry Cook, keyboardist Sam Reider and drummer Sean Trischka. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist:
West of Texas
Title: Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks (Pleasant Valley Ranch)
You might like if you enjoy: James Intveld, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam
Tell me more: The release of the debut from West of Texas is truly a saga worthy of the expansive sound heard across the 16 super songs that make up Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks. Singer-songwriter Jerry Zinn formed West of Texas back in 2003, with the group's 3-song EP titled The Heartache Single issued in 2010. Before a full-length LP could be completed, health issues hit Zinn and he was unable to sing. Fast forward to 2019 and Zinn was able to sing again ; the arrival of COVID-19 sadly put an end to planned live dates as part of a March-May 2020 tour. Zinn then used the uncertain time to return to the studio to finish the album he had started more than a decade earlier. And what an album it is! Produced by Rich McCulley, Heartache, Hangovers & Honky Tonks bristles with an authentic spirit recalling the groundbreaking likes of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam — it doesn't hurt that Zinn has a rich baritone that recalls the best country singers of the '60s and '70s. The honky tonk rollick "Foolin'," touching ballad "The Cost of Lovin' You," Cajun-styled "Bayou Boy," bluesy "Cheatin', Drinkin', Hurtin' Song," Western swing frolic "Fixin' to Love You" and beautiful "Sign of A Broken Heart" are among the mega cool songs on the outstanding LP.  Information: https://westoftexas.bandcamp.com/album/heartache-hangovers-honky-tonks.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — “The world could come together as one.”

These lyrics are from the 1970 Beach Boys composition “Add Some Music to Your Day,” and they are the inspiration for a new Omnivore Recordings album, California Music Presents Add Some Music, due out April 23, 2021 on CD and Digital. Initiated by Beach Boys historian and documentarian David Beard, California Music Presents Add Some Music is an uplifting collection celebrating all that is good about one of California’s greatest exports … music! Watch the music video for "Add Some Music To Your Day" HERE.

In 2020, Beard re-recorded the classic 1970 Beach Boys song “Add Some Music to Your Day” (written by Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Joe Knott) with Beach Boys members Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks and the children of the Beach Boys, including Carnie and Wendy Wilson (Brian Wilson’s daughters), Christian, Hayleigh and Ambha Love (Mike Love’s children); Justyn Wilson (son of Carl Wilson); and Matt Jardine (son of founding Beach Boys member Al Jardine). Their brilliant new rendering of “Add Some Music to Your Day” was arranged and produced by Rob Bonfiglio (member of the Brian Wilson Band and husband to Carnie Wilson).

Filling out the ten tracks are recordings by Love, Jardine, Johnston, Marks longtime Beach Boys associate Jeffrey Foskett, Bonfiglio, and a previously unreleased recording of The Beach Boys’ classic ‘Friends” from the next generation. A portion of the proceeds of this release will be donated to http://www.feedingamerica.org.

From Beard’s liner notes: “Gathering together these incredible talents in order to help those in need is as good as it gets, and when it comes to the music of The Beach Boys, it makes sense. We get to listen to music while helping others. It’s ventures like this one that make the future a little brighter.”

Quotes from The Beach Boys:

“‘Add Some Music to Your Day’ brings to mind almost a decade ago when, Brian, Alan, Bruce, David and I gathered around the piano during the 50th Reunion Tour. It’s a real joy to listen to this new incarnation of the song recorded with so many family members. The hope expressed in the lyric of the song is that music can bring people together. The world in harmony — something that is desperately needed. It’s a sweet song with an uplifting message. A special thanks to David Beard for all his work in getting us all together for this sweet song with a purpose. Peace and Love.”
 —Mike Love

“It’s been a great pleasure to be involved in this new version of ‘Add Some Music to Your Day,’ something we should ALWAYS be doing and having the proceeds go to the charity Feeding America to help feed the hungry is something I truly believe in. Thank you, David Beard, and everyone involved!” —Al Jardine

“I’ve always loved ‘Add Some Music to Your Day’ as a wonderful sweet song to have originally recorded and I’m honored to be part of this new ‘next century’ recording. I also think that the additional vocals from our close family and friends sounds great! Best of all: Musically we all are part of helping to benefit Feeding America.” —Bruce Johnston

“I am honored to be part of this worthwhile project, especially with the other Beach Boys! Thanks to David Beard” —David Marks

Brian Wilson's 11th solo studio album, titled "No Pier Pressure," to be released April 7 by Capitol Records

Exciting breaking news of interest to fans of Brian Wilson, as well as lovers of the great duo She & Him, country singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves and other modern-day sonic heroes. I love the album title too!

BRIAN WILSON'S 11TH SOLO STUDIO ALBUM, TITLED 'NO PIER PRESSURE,'
TO BE RELEASED APRIL 7 BY CAPITOL RECORDS

New Album Features Collaborations with Beach Boys Bandmates,
Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward,
Peter Hollens, and Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian

Hollywood, California - January 29, 2015- He is one of popular music's most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most gifted and influential composers of the past 50 years. For the release of his 11th solo studio album, titled No Pier Pressure, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys.  The album will be released April 7 in standard 13-track and deluxe 16-track editions, each available on CD and digitally, as well as a 16-track 2LP edition on 180-gram vinyl.

For the No Pier Pressure sessions, Brian Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, with whom he co-produced The Beach Boys' No. 3 Billboard album That's Why God Made The Radio for the iconic band's 50th anniversary reunion in 2012.  In addition, Wilson was  joined at Hollywood's Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.'s Nate Ruess, She & Him's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, Capital Cities' Sebu Simonian, and trumpet master Mark Isham.  Wilson has also brought in session all-stars Don Was, drummer Jim Keltner, Dean Parks, and Kenny Aronoff.  Members of Wilson's longtime touring band, including Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory also participated in the sessions, along with Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, and former bandmate Jeffrey Foskett.
Wilson and Thomas began collaborating on the new songs during The Beach Boys' whirlwind 50th anniversary activities throughout 2012, a banner year for the band which also included a GRAMMY® Award win for Brian for The Beach Boys' long-awaited SMiLE Sessions release.  He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.

Always most inspired when creativity is given time and space to freely flow, Wilson initially envisioned the sessions for his new album with The Beach Boys in mind, but that was not to be.  Wanting to find the right voices to complete his vision, Wilson saw an opportunity to finally become hip with his kids and recruited some amazing young vocalists who have been inspired by his music to do the job.
Throughout his iconic career, Wilson has brought ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.  For more than 50 years, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from Wilson's imagination into glorious song.
Camped out at Ocean Way, Wilson took a fluid, woodshedding approach to the recording process, deftly tailoring the vocal and instrumental parts and arrangements to each participant.  Wilson worked to hone the arrangements, often assembling pieces from various takes, a signature style of recording he has enjoyed since his earliest sessions with The Beach Boys.  In fact, several of the songs were written during the recording process.
Brian Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The band's initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966's Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.  Wilson's innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including "I Get Around," "California Girls," "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," and the No. 1 smash "Good Vibrations" made The Beach Boys America's preeminent band of the 1960s.
Brian Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 10of his own albums released to date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the '60s, Brian Wilson Presents... SMiLE, which reached Billboard's Top 20 and earned him his first GRAMMY® Award for a recording.  Wilson won his second GRAMMY Award® for producing The Beach Boys' acclaimed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions.  Wilson has also performed major, sold-out SMiLE and Pet Sounds tours in recent years with his own band.  Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a UK Music Hall of Fame inductee.  As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® Award in 2001.
