It’s a tale of writing songs and playing in bands as a conduit to a world its author could once have barely imagined—a world of indie and major labels, luxury tour buses, and sold-out theatres, but also one of alcohol, drugs, and a low-level rock’n’roll Babylon. Ultimately, it’s a tale of redemption, with music as a vehicle for artistic and personal transformation and transcendence.   Make It Right features contributions from Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Linda Pitmon (The Baseball Project) and a cast of dozens. The songs aren’t directly autobiographical although the album does start with “Santa Monica,” the city and boulevard where Wynn was born and concludes with “Roosevelt Avenue,” the main thoroughfare of the Queens neighborhood in New York City that he calls home today.   “I wrote and recorded the songs on Make It Right in tandem with working on I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True, my memoir, which are being released the same week as Make It Right, my first solo album since 2010,” said Steve Wynn. “With each chapter, I would get ideas for songs inspired by the deep dive into my past and vice versa. The reflections became intertwined after a while, a mutual commentary between literal and metaphorical ruminating.”   Wynn will also be touring solo across the UK, Europe North America this Autumn as a one-man show blending songs from and inspired by the book along with a narrative structure of readings and storytelling. June 17, 2024: Today, Songwriters Hall Of Fame inductee JD Souther announced a reissue of his classic third album, You’re Only Lonely, out July 26 through Omnivore Recordings. 

 

The 9-track LP returns for the first time in 35 years, and the CD and Digital add two previously unissued bonus tracks from the album’s sessions. New liner notes from Joe Marchese (The Second Disc) feature an interview with JD outlining the recording of the album, the all-star players, and why it is an important record to him and the fans who have supported it for all these years.

 

“We always said our motto was ‘we’re building to last.’ We really spent a lot of time on the songs. The other motto was, ‘no filler.’ You don’t make a single and then put a bunch of filler on an album. You make an album and hope you have a single.” You’re Only Lonely epitomizes that ethos. It’s built to last.

 

By 1979, JD Souther had quickly established himself as the consummate singer/songwriter and performer - penning hits for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor, while delivering two now-essential releases for David Geffen’s Asylum Records. (Both John David Souther and Black Rose have been expanded and reissued by Omnivore Recordings.) He assembled an A-list band (Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Don Grolnick on piano, Kenny Edwards on bass, and Rick Marotta on drums, with Danny “Kootch” Kortchmar also contributing on guitar, David Sanborn on alto saxophone, and Dan Dugmore on guitar and steel) for his debut on Columbia Records.

 

You’re Only Lonely appeared at the end of that year and the title track stormed up the charts. “You’re Only Lonely” spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts and was a #7 Pop hit. The album itself was a critical success, hitting #41 on the LP charts. Billboard praised the LP as a “predominantly mellow, atmospheric collection of tunes . . . Souther’s guitar playing takes a backseat to his writing, with many of the tunes here among his best.” (From the new liner notes) “It was quite a good Christmas,” JD laughs. “’You’re Only Lonely’ and ‘Heartache Tonight’ (co-written by JD, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, and Bob Seger) were both in the top ten the same week. It was pretty amazing.”

 

You’re Only Lonely contains JD’s versions of tracks previously recorded by Linda Ronstadt (“White Rhythm And Blues” from Living In The USA), Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (“The Moon Turned Blue” from Dream) and Nicolette Larson (“The Last In Love” from her debut Nicolette), plus “Trouble In Paradise” (the title track of the second Souther-Hillman-Furay Band album).

Tell me more: In celebration of Manchester, England-based quintet The Speed Of Sound's 35th anniversary, Big Stir Records has issued A Cornucopia, an ambitious 3-disc set available on audio CD and limited-run vinyl. The first disc on the set features the album Minerva, a 14-track collection that showcases the group's freewheeling approach that blends power pop, indie rock, New Wave, psychedelia and punk rock stylings with artistic firepower and sonic grace. The band's signature sound is anchored by the winning dual male and female lead vocals of guitarists Ann-Marie Crowley and John Armstrong respectively (imagine an outfit headed by Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Debbie Harry and Lou Reed); the rest of the talented band includes bassist Kevin Roache, drummer John Broadhurst and pianist Henry Armstrong. Tell me more: Fans of old school British punk rock will celebrate the release of U.K. Subs' The Last Will And Testament of U.K. Subs, available now as a special CD + DVD combo edition. Recorded live at The 100 Club in London, England on Sept. 29 and 30, 2023 as part of the band's farewell tour, the essential title features 70 minutes of the incendiary quartet — formed at the dawn of punk rock explosion in 1976 — performing a mix of of its groundbreaking hardcore and street punk rock originals in an intimate setting where audience members are allowed right up to the edge of the stage. Tell me more: Los Angeles-based alternative country hero David Serby is back! Low Hanging Stars marks Serby's first collection of new music in a decade and the good news is that not a moment is wasted on the terrific 10-track set. Serby's literate and observant tales of streets stretching from Hollywood east to the Salton Sea are matched by the rousing music making where the talented singer-songwriter-guitarist is joined by his longtime producer and lead guitarist Ed Tree, bassist Greg Boaz (currently a member of Mavis Staples' band), drummer Dale Daniel (formerly of the Hacienda Brothers), and keyboardist-vocalist Darice Bailey. 'Titanic: The Musical' Thrills via Film Available on Blu-ray & DVD

Tell me more: One of the most tragic events of the 20th century, the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912 continues to fascinate and haunt the world more than 112 years after "the unsinkable ship" hit an iceberg and sank in the icy waters of the North Atlantic resulting in the death of 1,522 men, women and children.

A number of films about the doomed ocean liner were released in the years after the disaster, but no single production captured the event as powerfully as Titanic: The Musical, a two act musical that originally opened on Broadway on April 23, 1997 and went on to win five Tony Awards (including Best Musical); that initial production ran for 804 performances. With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone, that production toured the United States beginning in January 1999. I caught that production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and it was an incredible introduction to the musical for this writer. Titanic: The Musical has since received hundreds of professional and amateur productions worldwide and become a staple of musical theater.

A 2023 UK tour of the celebrated musical was filmed and has just been released on both DVD and Blu-ray (the latter format reviewed here) by Liberator Films. Chronicling real crew members and passengers on the ship, the film captures the "hopes, dreams and aspirations of all on board her faithful maiden voyage." The visual and audio quality on the 136-minute production is outstanding.

The lavish and creative stage production is matched by the strong cast; without exception the performers deliver strong acting and vocal performances.
