(Los Angeles – March 9, 2020) –  Today, Eddie Vedder revealed the lineup for the fifth annual Ohana Festival, which he founded, taking place Friday, September 25^th – Sunday, September 27^th at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, CA.  Headliners on the beachfront stage include Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder and Kings of Leon.  The weekend will also feature performances by My Morning Jacket, Maggie Rogers, Pretenders, Dermot Kennedy, Durand Jones & The Indications, CAAMP, The Frames, EOB (Ed O’Brien of Radiohead), Mac Demarco, Yola, Mon Laferte, Sharon Van Etten, Broken Social Scene, Gang of Youths, Inhaler, Jade Bird, Cavetown, Brian Fallon, Night Moves, Real Estate, Shovels & Rope, Combo Chimbita, Wild Belle, Son Little, Plague Vendor, Greer, Kevin Garrett, La Luz, Amo Amo, Modern Eyes, Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, Ethan Gruska, The Aquadolls, Liz Brasher, Timmy Curran, Jonny Roundhouse, Pony Bradshaw, Rob Machado and Will Dailey.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 13 at 10am local time at ohanafest.com. Ticket options include Single Day GA, Single Day VIP, Weekend GA and Weekend VIP.

Beyond Ohana’s musical line-up, the Storytellers Cove will once again include a collection of exhibits & panels with leading conservationists, environmentalists, researchers, and professional surfers. More information be announced soon.

Ohana Festival was founded by Eddie Vedder in 2015. A portion of the proceeds from Ohana will benefit the San Onofre Parks Foundation and the Doheny State Beach Foundation. A full list of Ohana participating charities include California Department of  California Coastal Commission, Doheny State Beach Foundation, Rob Machado Foundation, San Onofre Parks Foundation, Sea Legacy, Surfrider Foundation, South OC Chapter, WSL PURE and Los Cerritos Wetlands Land Trust.

Open to all ages, the festival will feature craft beer, wine, signature cocktails, as well as artisan food options from local restaurants and food trucks.

In the mid-1980s as Johnny Cash found himself between labels, Mercury Records snatched up the country legend for what would end up being a prolific string of six albums in five years. The records, released from 1986 to 1991, were a diverse collection that included a notable reunion with fellow Sun Records alumni Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, star-studded collaborations with Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney, Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jr. and others, inspired takes on songs from Elvis Costello, Guy Clark and Harry Chapin, the Man in Black revisiting his classic hits, and some of the finest songs ever written by Cash. Despite the quality of material, Cash’s stint with Mercury has never been revisited—until now. 

On April 24, Cash's often overlooked and underappreciated chapter of his body of work will be showcased with a suite of releases via Mercury/UMe including a comprehensive new box set, The Complete Mercury Recordings 1986-1991, and a new greatest hits album, Easy Rider: The Best Of The Mercury Recordings, a newly assembled collection that compiles 24 highlights selected from Cash's Mercury catalog. Easy Rider will be released as a single CD, double LP and digital download.

The Complete Mercury Recordings 1986-1991, available on 7CD or 7LP on 180-gram vinyl, collects all six albums – Class of '55: Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming (1986), Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town (1987), Water from the Wells of Home (1988), Classic Cash: Hall of Fame Series (1988), Boom Chicka Boom (1990) and The Mystery of Life (1991), and –  that Cash recorded during his Mercury tenure and presents them together for the first time in a handsome slipcase emblazoned with the distinctive bold Cash logo. All of the albums have been remastered from the original Mercury master tapes by noted engineer Kevin Reeves at UMG Studios Nashville. The set was assembled by Grammy Award-winning producer Bill Levenson and features extensive new liner notes by veteran music journalist Scott Schinder.

Also on April 24, all of the albums will be released individually on 180-gram black vinyl, with Classic Cash: Hall Of Fame Series as a two-LP set. This marks the first time that Cash's Mercury albums have been reissued.

The CD version of The Complete Mercury Recordings 1986-1991 is augmented with several rare or previously unreleased tracks and an additional 20-track disc of spare early mixes aptly titled Classic Cash: Hall Of Fame Series (Early Mixes), mastered from tapes newly discovered in the Mercury vaults. Although these never-before-heard versions are not included in the vinyl box, they're being released on April 18, 2020 as a Record Store Day exclusive, as a stand-alone limited edition double LP. 

While the mid ‘80s to early ‘90s saw Cash, who was still touring heavily, a bit creatively adrift, he never stopped making distinctive, personally charged music. Signing with Mercury after ending his almost 30-year relationship with Columbia, Cash’s output for Mercury demonstrated that his musical gifts remained as sharp as ever. 

Cash’s first album for Mercury, the all-star session, Class of '55: Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming, reunited him with fellow Sun Records alumni Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins. With veteran Memphis producer Chips Moman behind the board, the four singers tackle a mix of old and new material, including the Cash-led "I Will Rock and Roll with You" and the Presley tribute, "We Remember the King." Another Elvis ode, John Fogerty's "Big Train from Memphis," features a vocal chorus that includes Fogerty, June Carter Cash, Rick Nelson, Dave Edmunds, Dan Penn and the Judds.

Johnny Cash Is Coming to Town reteamed Cash with producer "Cowboy" Jack Clement, who as Sun Records' house engineer had overseen many of Cash's '50s sessions and written some of his early hits. The album’s studio team includes wife June Carter Cash and her singing siblings Anita and Helen and daughter Carlene Carter, Cash’s then son-in-law Marty Stuart, and Waylon Jennings, who lends his voice to the warmly nostalgic "The Night Hank Williams Came to Town." Other highlights include rousing readings of Elvis Costello's "The Big Light" and James Talley's "W. Lee O'Daniel (and the Light Crust Dough Boys)."

With Clement producing again, the star-studded Water from the Wells of Home features guest appearances by Cash’s wife June Carter Cash and daughter Rosanne Cash, along with Glen Campbell, Jessi Colter, the Everly Brothers, Tom T. Hall, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney and Hank Williams Jr. on an eclectic set of material including "That Old Wheel," a duet with Williams that became Cash's highest-charting single in over a decade. 

Classic Cash: Hall of Fame Series finds Cash revisiting such vintage classics as "I Walk the Line," "Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Get Rhythm," "I Still Miss Someone" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down" with considerable gusto.

With veteran Nashville musician Bob Moore producing, Boom Chicka Boom —named in honor of the trademark rhythm that Cash pioneered in the '50s—is a straightforward vehicle for Cash's talent, vision and humor. Highlights include the surreal Cash composition "A Backstage Pass," a remake of Harry Chapin’s "Cat's in the Cradle" and the poignant "Hidden Shame," which Elvis Costello wrote for Cash. The CD of Boom Chicka Boom includes seven bonus tracks not on the original album, including several b-sides and early versions and the unreleased gem "I Draw The Line."

The Mystery of Life, again produced by Clement, emphasized Cash’s own songwriting, e.g. "The Greatest Cowboy of Them All" and "I'm An Easy Rider," while also dipping into the songbooks of Tom T. Hall and John Prine. The CD version of The Mystery of Life also includes Cash's historic collaboration with U2, "The Wanderer," which appears as an extended version previously released only on the soundtrack album of director Wim Wenders’ film “Faraway, So Close.” The song also closes out the best of collection.

The Complete Mercury Recordings 1986-1991 and Easy Rider: The Best Of The Mercury Recording represent an overdue deep dive into Johnny Cash's Mercury catalog, revealing its importance as the bridge between his better-known work for other labels. As mentioned by Schinder in the box set’s liner notes, these recordings “stand as a notable transitional body of work, and an illuminating prelude to the full-blown creative resurgence that Cash would experience in the 1990s.”

Record Store Day: Omnivore Recordings announces titles featuring previously unheard music from Andrew Gold, America, New Riders of the Purple Sage

This just came my way and this Record Store Day is shaping up to be a great one...

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Omnivore Recordings has announced its titles for Record Store Day 2020, to be held April 18 at brick-and-mortar record retailers throughout the U.S. and around the world. Released for the occasion will be three titles of previously unheard music: Andrew Gold: Something New: Unreleased Gold on gold vinyl; America: Heritage II: Demos/Alternate takes 1971-1976; and New Riders of the Purple Sage: Field Trip.

 

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the U.S. and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place in 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica. 

It is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store — the staff, the customers, and the artists — to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day.

Andrew Gold – Something New: Unreleased Gold

 

In the mid-1970s, Andrew Gold’s skills as a musician and an arranger were ubiquitous, appearing on some of the biggest records of the decade by artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, and James Taylor. By 1977, he had reached the Billboard Top 10 as an artist and writer with his self-penned hit, “Lonely Boy.” In the mid-’80s and early ’90s, Andrew’s song “Thank You for Being a Friend” was used as the theme for the hugely successful NBC-TV sitcom The Golden Girls. From 1992–1999, Andrew was the TV theme voice of the Paul Reiser-Helen Hunt comedy star Mad About You, and in 2019, Andrew’s “Spooky Scary Skeletons” found new life thanks to a viral dance craze on TikTok that has reached more than 250 million people!

 

But in 1973, like so many singer songwriters in Los Angeles, Gold was just another talented guy looking for a record deal. Brought to Clover Recorders by producer Chuck Plotkin (Bruce Springsteen), Gold set out to lay down the many songs he had written that he’d hoped would land him a recording contract. Over a period of many months, Plotkin and Gold recorded numerous songs that would ultimately land him a deal with Asylum Records, which released his first album in the fall of 1975. Interestingly, none of the songs recorded in 1973 would appear on any of Andrew’s four solo albums over the next several years ... until now!

This set of previously unreleased music, including a gold vinyl disc for Record Store Day, contains liner notes by Grammy® Award-winning producer Peter Asher. The CD and Digital versions will be available one week later on April 24, 2020.

America – Heritage II: Demos/Alternate Takes 1971-1976

 

In 2017, Omnivore Recordings released America’s Heritage: Home Recordings/Demos 1970-1973. And now, due to critical acclaim and commercial demand, here’s the follow-up, Heritage II: Demos/Alternate Takes 1971-1976.

 

This collection picks up where the first volume left off, centering mostly on the beginning of the Sir George Martin era. Martin produced seven albums by America; Heritage II focuses in on demos and alternate takes from the Holiday, Hearts, and Hideaway albums from 1974-1976. Hear, for the very first time, an unreleased Gerry Beckley song, “Mandy”; demos of songs from Holiday (“What Does It Matter” and “Mad Dog”), outtakes from Hearts (“Simple Life”) and alternate mixes from Hideaway (“Amber Cascades” and “Today’s the Day”).

 

In addition to these gems, there’s a real rarity from 1971, an acoustic instrumental jam by Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek entitled “Jameroony,” lasting nearly 13 minutes. Unearthed from the band’s archives, this track has been rumored for years but only just found recently. An early ’70s soft rock fan’s dream come true.

 

This collection, containing liner notes by band member Beckley, spotlights a new direction in the band’s sound as Sir George Martin takes the reins and leads them to many more platinum albums and hit records. New Riders of the Purple Sage – Field Trip

 

With Billboard magazine hailing the New Riders of the Purple Sage as “the definitive band of the country-rock genre,” 1972 was a year of major growth for the band. By the time summer rolled around, Buddy Cage (who passed away this year) was now firmly entrenched as Jerry Garcia’s replacement on pedal steel guitar, and the band’s second studio album, Powerglide, was getting rave reviews. On the live front, they were beginning to fill concert halls across the U.S. while continuing to emerge from the shadows of the Grateful Dead with an intoxicating mix of classic and original American songwriting from the worlds of country, rock, bluegrass, and soul.

 

August 27, 1972 found the New Riders once again on the bill with the Grateful Dead for what turned out to be one of the more legendary events in this subculture’s history. On the grounds of what is now the Oregon Country Fair, Chuck Kesey (brother of author and Merry Prankster icon Ken Kesey) put together a benefit concert — which quickly became known as the “Field Trip” — for the local Springfield Creamery. As fellow Prankster Ken Babbs recalls, “No one ever suspected it would become a historic event with an attendance of 20,000 on the hottest day ever — they ran out of water, the guitars warped in the heat and now everyone you talk to, hundreds of thousands, were there on that all-time greatest most spectacular day.”

 

Taken from the original 16-track master tapes, Field Trip is a crystallized moment in time-capturing all the elements of the day along with the thumping and driving energy of a smokin’ set delivered by the New Riders. Early versions of “Groupie,” “Whiskey” and “Linda” are offered, along with a blazing “Whatcha Gonna Do.” Once again, the band kicks out the jams with bassist Dave Torbert leading the way on the classics “I Don’t Need No Doctor” and “Willie and the Hand Jive.”

 

The 2-LP set was produced by NPRS historian Rob Bleetstein and contains liner notes by Ken Babbs.
