RISING COUNTRY ARTIST COLTON BOWLIN SHARES NEW SINGLE “DON’T COME HOME”
PRODUCED BY DAVID FERGUSON

December 5, 2025—Rising singer, songwriter and musician Colton Bowlin’s new song, “Don’t Come Home,” is out now via Thirty Tigers; listen/share HERE.
Of the track, Bowlin shares, “‘Don’t Come Home’ is a dark tale about betrayal, revenge, and consequence. I often heard tall tales around the feed mill, and this song was imagined in one of those moments.”
Produced by David Ferguson (Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson) and written by Colton, the song was recorded live in studio—Bowlin’s first time working within a fully established recording process.
Praised as “a generational talent” by Holler, Bowlin continues to cement himself as one of country music’s most compelling new voices. Raised on the Kentucky–Tennessee state line, Bowlin grew up surrounded by the work ethic and storytelling traditions of small-town life. He spent his days working at his grandfather’s feed mill and his nights writing songs, drawing early inspiration from the old-timers he grew up around. Rooted in classic country and shaped by a wide range of influences, Bowlin writes with an honest focus on love, family, faith and finding your way through change. In 2024, Bowlin self- released his debut album, Songs From The Holler, and has since shared the stage with artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Colby Acuff, Whiskey Myers, Ashley McBryde and Brent Cobb.

Old 97's set to release new album 'American Primitive' on April 5

Check out the wonderful music video for the new Old 97's track "Where The Road Goes" and get details on the beloved band's forthcoming new album "American Primitive" set for release on April 5...Robert Kinsler

Old 97’s Celebrate 30th Anniversary with
New Album American Primitive
Out April 5 via ATO Records

West Coast Tour Kicks Off April 3

February 20, 2024:
Thirty years after the release of their powerhouse debut Hitchhike to Rhome, alt-country pioneers Old 97’s are celebrating with the announcement of their lucky 13th studio album American Primitive that will be released on April 5 via ATO Records. Opening with the lyric “You’ve got to dance like the world is falling down around you, because it is,” American Primitive radiates with rambunctious joy even as Miller’s lyrics contend with complex questions of love and mental illness and the routinely daunting state of the world. Today, the three-decade-long lineup of singer and guitarist Rhett Miller, bassist Murry Hammond, guitarist Ken Bethea, and drummer Philip Peeples released the official video for first single “Where The Road Goes” which features Peter Buck on guitar.

“I was in Montana and found myself on the banks of the Blackfoot River, watching the water pounding with a ferocious power, and I started building this song as a statement of gratitude for having survived this long,” explains Miller. “It revisits some of the darkest moments of my life, including a suicide attempt at age 14 that by all rights I shouldn’t have lived through and yet somehow did. In a way it’s like a spiritual travelogue that rolls back through all the places that shaped me for better or worse, and ends up in this beautiful place that I felt so thankful to experience.”

Produced by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, Neko Case) and featuring iconic guest musicians like Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Scott McCaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5, the album took shape in a series of deliberately whirlwind sessions at Flora Studio in Portland, Oregon. “This was the first record we’ve ever done with zero pre-production,” Miller points out. “It’s us working completely on instinct, leaning on 30 years of playing together to come up with something on the fly rather than overthinking any of our choices.”

The album’s title was lifted from a bit of fictional art criticism in Stephen King’s psych-horror novel Duma Key and experienced a full-circle moment when King himself tweeted the news about the album early. In choosing the cover art for American Primitive, Old 97’s selected a painting created by Hammond’s 17-year-old son Tex Hammond — a prodigious talent who, at age 14, became the youngest artist ever to exhibit at the prestigious LA Art Show. It’s a fitting choice for a band who’ve maintained a certain youthful exuberance more than three decades into their career, and for an album in which a palpable sense of wonder prevails despite its world-weary undercurrent.

“Over the last year of touring in celebration of our 30th anniversary, it’s been impossible not to feel some emotion welling up at the idea that my bandmates and I have been in this close brotherhood for so long,” says Miller. “I think a lot of that longevity has to do with the fact that we’re really the same band we were back then. We’ve experimented with pushing in different directions, and we’ve had experiences outside the band where we’ve learned new things, but the way we approach this music has fundamentally remained the same. Our heart is still in the exact same place.”

Old 97’s will kick off a spring west coast tour in Santa Fe, NM on April 3 and make stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and more. Find a full list of tour dates below or visit their website.

Early Acclaim for Old 97’s American Primitive:

“If it’s the end of the world as we know it, this is the record we want to hear to push us on through to the next level.” - Rosanne Cash

- Rainn Wilson

“This is all I'll be listening to until the next Old 97’s album.”
- Tig Notaro

Kris Kristofferson releases "Live At Gilley's" tomorrow - Taste of Country premieres album in its entirety today (9/1/2022)

Check out this eagerly-awaited recording featuring Kris Kristofferson today...Robert Kinsler

KRIS KRISTOFFERSON TO RELEASE LIVE AT GILLEY’S - PASADENA, TX: SEPTEMBER 15, 1981, TOMORROW VIA NEW WEST RECORDS

FEATURING LINER NOTES WRITTEN BY MICKEY GILLEY, GEORGE STRAIT, AND BILLY SWAN

TASTE OF COUNTRY PREMIERES ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY TODAY

Kris Kristofferson will release Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 tomorrow via New West Records. The previously unreleased 15-song set was the final date of Kristofferson’s 1981 tour and was recorded at the legendary Pasadena, TX honky tonk most well known for its role in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy. Kristofferson is backed by an incredible live band featuring Stephen Bruton, Billy Swan, Donnie Fritts, Tommy McClure, Glen Clark, and Sammy Creason. The album also features exclusive liner notes written by the country music legend & Gilley’s co-owner Mickey Gilley, as well as additional pieces written by the legendary George Strait, and Billy Swan.

Today, Taste of Country premiered the album in full, a day ahead of its release, exclaiming, "Too many albums are labeled as 'essential' in the 21st century, but this project truly transports country fans to an essential era in the genre's history. The Live at Gilley's album is raw, rowdy, and inspired." Hear Kris Kristofferson’s Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 in its entirety HERE.

From his liner notes written three months before his passing in May, Mickey Gilley offered, “Gilley’s could hold several thousand people, but the club was very intimate. You were right there on the stage with people all around you. You could bend down and shake hands with people.” He continued, “Right next to the club was the recording studio, and we recorded everything that was done onstage. We could record onto the 24-track machine that we had in the studio, then we would do the mixing…We booked a lot of shows around that time, including some people I didn’t think would want to play the club. We got some acts that made me think, ‘Are you kidding me?’...Kris Kristofferson was one of those artists that I didn’t think would want to play Gilley’s, because he was such a big name and a tremendous talent.”

George Strait exclaimed, “What a great album this is! Classic Kristofferson songs throughout, and live!! Kris was in his prime and his vocals were outstanding and very soulful as always. I got to play Gilley's a few times back in those days and this record takes me right back there. You can tell the crowd is loving him and he’s loving them right back. That’s what it’s all about. It was an exciting time to say the least. So close your eyes and listen to this record. Imagine you’re right there standing in front of the stage with the man himself looking right at you. I think you’ll get a really good idea of what Gilley's was like back then when Kris played there. What a treat that must’ve been.”

Kris Kristofferson's Live at Gilley’s - Pasadena, TX: September 15, 1981 will be available across digital platforms, on compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A very limited to 300 White Vinyl Edition will be available exclusively at Texas Retailers while a limited, foil stamped and numbered to 750, Opaque Metallic Silver Vinyl Edition will be available via Vinyl Me, Please. New Music: Hoodoo Gurus, Band of Horses, Jackie Bristow, Hank Williams

Eagerly-awaited returns from Australia's Hoodoo Gurus, American rock troupe Band of Horses and Nashville-based songstress Jackie Bristow are among the new essential titles featured in my column this week. There is also a new collection of extraordinary recordings by groundbreaking country music icon Hank Williams available now.

Artist:
Hoodoo Gurus
Title: Chariot of the Gods (Big Time Phonographic Record Co/EMI Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Hoodoo Gurus, The Scientists, Ghostwriters
Tell me more: More than a decade since the release of their last album (2010's Purity of Essence) and first new music since 2014 (the EP Gravy Train), Hoodoo Gurus has returned with the brilliant Chariot of the Gods. Formed in Sydney, Australia back in 1981, Chariot of the Gods finds the quartet tearing artfully through more than a dozen outstanding originals —  utterly proving their literate and unique rock approach is fully relevant in 2022. The thundering "World of Pain," confessional "Was I Supposed To Care?," punk-styled "Hang With The Girls" and introspective "My Imaginary Friend" are early standouts on the disc. The melodic '60s-tinged "Equinox," blistering "I Come From Your Future," soaring "Carry On" and sparkling "Settle Down" keep the magic soaring on the last half of the album. Let's hope that we hear more from Dave Faulkner (vocals, guitars), Brad Shepherd (vocals, guitar), Rick Grossman (vocals, bass) and Nik Reith (drums) soon. Information: hoodoogurus.net.

Artist:
Band of Horses
Title: Things Are Great (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: Band of Horses, Neil Young, The War on Drugs
Tell me more: While the title of Band of Horses' long awaited new album  Things Are Great  is seemingly at odds with the world around us — just think of soaring inflation, Russia's terrifying war against the innocent people of Ukraine and the continuing death toll from the global pandemic — there is no denying the marvelous experience at being immersed in the band's first new studio album since 2016. Lead singer Ben Bridwell and company have crafted another modern day masterwork; this is an album that recalls the expansive joy of 2010's Infinite Arms. The parade of enthralling originals on Things Are Great includes the soaring "Warning Signs" and "Lights," ascending "Crutch," luxurious "Tragedy of the Commons," inspired "In Need of Repair" and dreamy "Aftermath." Information: BandOfHorses.com.

Artist:
Jackie Bristow
Title: Outsider (Mesa Bluemoon Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Alice Wallace, Darling West, Kasey Chambers
Tell me more: Released on March 4, Outsider is Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jackie Bristow's first new album in six years. Blending rock, pop, Americana and country music across a dozen delightful tracks, Bristow's wonderful soprano is positioned amidst a backdrop of nuanced acoustic and electric guitars, banjo and pedal steel, and even strings and horns. The contributions of Bristow's longtime musical partner Mark Punch (Kasey Chambers, Tim Finn) along with a number of top-tier singers and musicians further elevate the project. The material ranges from the smooth "Livin' For Love," lovely "Shakin' My Bones" (the latter bolstered by Norwegian singers Tor Egil Kraken and Mari Kraken of Darling West fame) and bewitching "Without You" to the Southern soul-drenched "Tennessee" and the expansive jewel "Never To Late." Artist:
Hank Williams
Title: I'm Gonna Sing: The Mother's Best Gospel Radio Recordings (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Gram Parsons
Tell me more: The new Hank Williams collection I'm Gonna Sing: The Mother's Best Gospel Radio Recordings marks a perfect chance to discover (or rediscover) the art of Hank Williams. Although he died when he was only 29, Williams remains one of the most significant and influential American singer-songwriters of the 20th century even nearly 70 years after his passing. The track listing on I'm Gonna Sing never falters, with harmonies-adorned pre-20th century hymns ("I Am Bound For The Promised Land," "That Beautiful Home," "The Blind Child's Prayer"), early 20th century hymnals ("The Old Country Church," "I'll Fly Away," "I'll Have A New Life"), black gospel ("When God Dips His Love In My Heart," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand"), 1940s material ("Thy Burdens Are Greater Than Mine," "Searching For A Soldier's Grave") and Williams originals ("I Saw the Light," "Jesus Died For Me," "I'm Gonna Sing," "Jesus Remembered Me") collectively showcasing Williams' deep and life-long connection with gospel and religious music. The audio 2-CD digipak version reviewed here comes with an informative 12-page booklet that includes detailed liner notes by Williams biographer Colin Escott. The set has also been released via a three-LP triple-gatefold album pressed on 140g vinyl, marking the first time these recordings have been issued on vinyl. The 40 tracks recorded at the dawn of the 1950s sound fantastic; the collection was produced by Cheryl Pawelski while the recordings were restored and mastered by Michael Graves. Groundbreaking artists return with indispensable albums

Fans of Americana, traditional country, as well as modern and classic rock all have something to celebrate thanks to a handful of welcome returns.

Artist: The Mavericks
Title: Play the Hits (Mono Mundo Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Mavericks, Roy Orbison
Tell me more: Thirty years into their singular career blending neotraditional country, Americana, rockabilly and Tex-Mex styles, the Mavericks have come full circle offering up their signature sound on 11 reworked covers on Play the Hits. The track listing features specific classics that influenced and inspired the Miami-spawned troupe; it is a project that works masterfully in the talented hands of the Mavericks. The opening selection is "Swingin'," an uptempo and infectious take on John Anderson's 1983 hit. This version shines via the Mavericks' strong dance groove, Raul Malo's amazing lead vocals and super cool saxophone work from Max Abrams. The Mavericks are masters at honoring the spirit and power of the original versions while simultaneously making them decidedly their own. Waylon Jennings' "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" has all the assurance and power of the original even while this rendition has a sonic stamp that stands on its own. The beautiful retro-mining "Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)" showcases Malo's shining tenor, as well as the artful textures of his musical companions on a particularly affecting arrangement. This is truly a tribute that never falters; interpretations ranging from a New Orleans rhythm and blues take on Bruce Springsteen's "Hungry Heart," the buoyant "Once Upon A Time" (featuring guest vocals from Martina McBride) and sumptuous version of the Elvis Presley hit "Don't Be Cruel" are among the other terrific takes on this winning set. Information: TheMavericksBand.com.

Artist: Jason James
Title: Seems Like Tears Ago (Melodyville Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Gram Parsons, George Jones, Dwight Yoakam
Tell me more: Jason James' sophomore release Seems Like Tears Ago is a welcome celebration of traditional country music. The traditional-minded Texas-based singer-songwriter has a voice able to deliver the sweetest of ballads ("Seems Like Tears Ago," "Achin' Takin' Place," "Simply Divine") as well as more swinging tempo faves – notably "I Miss You After All," "Move a Little Closer" and Cajun waltz "Cry on the Bayou." All of the songs on the outstanding disc were penned by James, who is backed on the John Evans-produced effort by a top-tier band of players and backup singers. Lovers of pioneering artists ranging from George Jones and Gram Parsons to Mel Tillis will want to get "Seems Like Tears Ago." Information: JasonJamesBand.com.

Artist: Keane
Title: Cause and Effect (Island)
You might like if you enjoy: Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Keane
Tell me more: Keane explores both familiar and new territory on the band's fifth full-length album Cause and Effect, the quartet's first new album since 2012's Strangeland. On Keane's eagerly-awaited return the beautiful "I'm Not Leaving," "Love Too Much," "Chase the Night Away" and "The Way I Feel" recall the signature anthemic modern rock that introduced the beloved British band to the world courtesy of 2004's Hopes and Fears. Elsewhere there are flourishes of contemporary pop and electronica via "Stupid Things" and "Put The Radio On." The intimate "Strange Room," enticing "Thread" and probing "Phases" are among the other standouts on the album. But to be sure, Cause and Effect is a wonderful return for singer-guitarist Tom Chaplin, keyboardist Tim Rice-Oxley, drummer Richard Hughes and bassist Jesse Quin. Note: the deluxe edition of this album (available at Barnes and Noble) includes five bonus tracks – a total of 16 new tracks. Information: KeaneMusic.com.

Artist: Jeff Lynne's ELO
Title: From Out of Nowhere (Columbia)
You might like if you enjoy: ELO, The Beatles, the Traveling Wilburys, Pugwash
Tell me more: Listening to The latest album from Jeff Lynne's ELO, From Out of Nowhere, is to be immersed in the rich and Beatlesque warmth of the summer sun. The intoxicating title track, Traveling Wilburys-flavored "Help Yourself" and driving "Down Came the Rain" are among my favorites on the dazzling LP. There are some genuine surprises including the radiant "All My Love" that is anchored by a hypnotic guitar line and graceful lead vocals, the wistful "Losing You," and the disc closing "Songbird" that features some of Lynne's most memorable and affecting vocals of his long career. From Out of Nowhere is an even stronger effort than Lynne's 2015 LP Alone in the Universe. Information: JeffLynnesELO.com.
