“an impressive set…The xx hasn’t sacrificed the sense of intimacy — of two people exchanging confidences — that still defines songs sung in close harmony by
Sim and Madley Croft.”—Los Angeles Times

reveal themselves.”—The Washington Post

“The xx is a rare group that appears to be playing for each other, as well as with each other. They reveal their innermost secrets within their music, and turn to each other for reassurance that they aren’t in this alone, while the music helps them try to make sense of it all.”—CityPages

“They were masterful in delivering a new sound.”—The Oregonian

“The London trio showed off their seasoned stage chops; the hit-packed show was so affecting and crisp it could’ve been a concert film.”—The Current

Florence + the Machine debut The Odyssey Chapters 4 & 5: "Queen of Peace" and "Long And Lost" short film

Mondays aren't all bad...This media release just arrived in my inbox early today and I am happy to share. I've caught Florence + the Machine three times in concert and all three shows were incredible.

THE ODYSSEY CHAPTERS 4 & 5:
“QUEEN OF PEACE” AND “LONG AND LOST”
FLORENCE + THE MACHINE DEBUT NEW SHORT FILM VIA NPR MUSIC FIRST WATCH
MAKE FIRST EVER U.S. #1 DEBUT WITH HOW BIG HOW BLUE HOW BEAUTIFUL,
TOPS CHARTS WORLDWIDE

Headline dates nationwide this fall

Florence + the Machine debut The Odyssey Chapters 4 & 5: “Queen of Peace” and “Long & Lost” today via NPR Music First Watch.
This ten-minute film, which begins with “Queen of Peace” and flows into “Long & Lost,” tells the next chapters in Florence’s Odyssey begun with How Big How Blue How Beautiful. Shot on and around the Scottish isle of Easdale, this next installment film was made with frequent collaborator Vincent Haycock. Haycock has also directed the other films inspired by the songs on this most recent release including “How Big How Blue How Beautiful,” “What Kind of Man,” “St Jude” and “Ship to Wreck.”
Watch the film here.
“We filmed ‘Queen of Peace’ and ‘Long & Lost’ in Scotland, one of my favorite places I’ve ever been to or filmed,” Haycock says of the video. “The coast of Scotland is breathtaking, beautiful and harsh, an aesthetic mix that both Florence and I have been very interested in during the making of these videos. The Scottish people are amazing and especially the town of Easdale, the small island that we lived on and filmed. We shot in the winter and it was cold, brutal and endlessly inspiring, which I think really helped the story of Florence’s struggle with her family, the younger innocence vs. the feuding violence of the men around her, etc. The end of the video was done in a single take, at the very last seconds of light during a stormy barge ride on a freezing sea. The effort and focus on both the actors and crew was so amazing, Florence delivers one of my favorite moments to date and it’s one of my proudest technical and narrative accomplishments.”
Florence recently headlined Glastonbury’s main stage, playing a massive set of which The Guardian said, “Florence Welch doesn’t so much seize the opportunity as grab it by the throat and wrestle it to the ground,” and the Telegraph praised, “It takes an extraordinary artist to make more sense headlining a huge magical old festival than all the clubs, theatres and arenas that brought her here. This was surely her superstar moment, the point where Florence Welch stops being British pop's lady in waiting and takes her place with the big boys and girls…This was pop music of the highest order”

How Big How Blue How Beautiful continues to receive widespread critical acclaim:
“She’s back and stronger than ever…”
“A sexy record that sticks to some familiar themes: a woman wrestling with lovers and emotions, often with biblical allusions, liquid-courage assists and a near-violent intensity…a magnificent bit of British brooding.”
“Her most personal set of songs yet…It's a voice built for drama, and on this album its emotional range has never been wider.”
“‘How Big How Blue How Beautiful’ is a record about maneuvering around and through matters of the heart — sometimes triumphant, sometimes sad, and always deeply felt thanks to Welch acting as tour guide.”
“Lush and ornate…cresting and crashing and cresting and cresting some more…grand, arching vocal lines, leaping deftly across her registers.”
“Welch has made her most cohesive and personal record yet…we haven't heard it all from this dynamic, ever-evolving songstress.”
“How Big is Welch’s most accomplished album yet…her emotional depth and capacity for wonder remain gigantic”

“The Machine keeps humming! Florence Welch and her gang pick up the pace in their wonderful tertiary effort…Tearing through it all is a tornadic voice of a frontwoman enmeshed in the throes of ill-fated love.”
“The band has lost none of its ethereal grandeur”

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band rock Santa Barbara Bowl

Singer/songwriter/actor/artist/peacemaker/rock 'n' roll ringmaster Ringo Starr (who also happens to be the world's most famous drummer) continues to spread magic everywhere he goes. On Saturday, July 12, on a beautiful night at the Santa Barbara Bowl lit by a bright full white moon, Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band entertained a capacity crowd of more than 4,500 fans of all ages who came to see the former Beatle and his illustrious six-man troupe revisit the past while fully celebrating the here and now.

To say the fast-moving two-hour concert offered something for everyone is an understatement. Starr was the obvious draw, armed with a number of enduring Beatles tracks (the timeless version of Carl Perkins' "Matchbox," the rollicking "I Wanna Be Your Man" and animated sing-along "Yellow Submarine") and his wonderful solo gems (classics such as "Photograph" and "It Don't Come Easy" as well as more recent "Wings" and "Anthem" off his Ringo 2012 collection). But to see Starr step back to simply become just another member of the band was fantastic too. Indeed, he had the chance to drum, play tambourine and box drum in support of hits played by other members of his ensemble, including guitarist Steve Lukather (of Toto fame), singer-keyboardist Gregg Rolie (a founding member of Santana), singer-guitarist Todd Rundgren and singer-bassist Richard Page (of Mr. Mister). Keyboardist-multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham and drummer Gregg Bisonette were an essential part of the music making throughout the night too.

One of the obvious strengths about Starr and this version of his All Starr Band is how the cast of talented players could effortlessly move from playing freewheeling rock 'n' roll (such as they did with the opening version of the Carl Perkins classic "Matchbox" or the Lennon and McCartney-penned "I Wanna Be Your Man" later in the show) to more textured material like a beautiful version of the Toto classic "Africa" or an insanely loose "Bang the Drum All Day." The audience was all in, able to sing along when the moment demanded ("Yellow Submarine" is one of the best sing-along songs ever), or to sit and take in the musical virtuoso jams (notably on the three classic Santana songs featuring Gregg Rolie on vocals and Lukather impressing big time with his stellar guitar work). What's more, the audience actually listened and seemed to take in a beautiful new song ("You Are Mine") featuring Page on lead vocals and acoustic guitar (Starr played some effective percussion seated at a box drum nearby).

Every fan, including yours truly, likely found the best performances of the night were favorite songs. I'm a huge fan of many of Starr's songs, and hearing him perform "It Don't Come Easy" is always a thrill. His song "Wings" is terrific and soared this night. Following that up was a lush version of Rundgren's lovely "I Saw The Light."

Later in the set, Starr reflected with his distinctive wit on his first original composition and went to the piano to lead off a spirited version of the White Album gem "Don't Pass Me By." The memorable night ended with a powerful "With a Little Help From My Friends" that had everyone on their feet; that emotional high led into a night-closing version of the John Lennon-penned Plastic Ono Band anthem "Give Peace a Chance."

For those who still have not caught Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band this summer, the good news is the tour continues through the end of October. Click here to see his upcoming tour dates, including a date at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday night, July 19.
