Rock 'n' Roll Revisited

Looking to spend those gift cards on some super cool rock albums that came out in 2017? Here is a roundup of a handful of great rock albums to consider.

Artist: Queens Of The Stone Age
Title: Villains (Matador Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Eagles of Death Metal, Band of Skulls
Tell me more: Produced by Mark Ronson, the latest album from Queens Of The Stone Age (Villains) marked a remarkable step forward for the band even while retaining what has always made the Palm Desert-spawned rockers so powerful. From the intoxicating riff rocker "The Way You Used To Do" and dreamy "Fortress" to the rapid-fire "Head Like a Haunted House" and swirling groove rocker "Hideaway," this is an album that pushes the creative boundaries of Joshua Homme's outfit in their first full-length effort since 2013's ...Like Clockwork. Information: qotsa.com.

Artist: The Foo Fighters
Title: Concrete and Gold (RCA)
You might like if you enjoy: Queens of the Stone Age,
Tell me more: There are times listening to the Foo Fighters' Concrete and Gold where I was suddenly surprised hearing echos of Beatlesque sounds ("The Sky Is A Neighborhood," "Dirty Water," "Happy Ever After (Zero Hour)"), but that is not to take anything away from a band that has released another epic album of memorable and decidedly original rock songs. The exhilarating "The Line," grooving "La Dee Da," and signature melodic rocker "Arrows" all deliver on band leader Dave Grohl's quest to blend a massive rock sound with interesting melodies and arrangements. Information: foofighters.com.

Artist: Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie
Title: Lindsey Buckingham Christine McVie (Atlantic Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham
Tell me more: A breezy and sumptuous album that captures the magic of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors, the first-ever collaboration between Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie was one of 2017's biggest and most welcome surprises. With 10 terrific songs performed with shimmering arrangements that showcase the affecting voices of Buckingham and McVie, the riches include the infectious "Feel About You," lush "Red Sun," power pop-mining "On With the Show" and piano-anchored ballad "Game of Pretend." Information: BuckinghamMcvie.com.

Artist: Robert Plant
Title: Carry Fire (Nonesuch)
You might like if you enjoy: Robert Plant
Tell me more: Robert Plant's 11th solo studio LP Carry Fire is a wonderful and ambitious album that will please fans of the singer while they forever wait for a Led Zeppelin reunion. The title track "Carry Fire" visits the distant sounds of India, while the electronica-infused "Keep It Hid" might rest comfortably on a Moby disc. "Bones of Saints" is a more straightforward blues-flavored track; "Season's Song" is a lovely and expansive track. Every song on the album is very different from every other song, a reason that will provide listeners reason to explore and be rewarded with each new listen of "Carry Fire." Information: RobertPlant.com.

Artist: Van Morrison
Title: Roll With The Punches (Caroline International)
You might like if you enjoy: Van Morrison, Lead Belly
Tell me more: Van Morrison has returned with the must-hear Roll With The Punches, his 37th studio album. Showcasing a full-on exploration of the blues, the 72-year-old singer offers up poignant takes on classics written by the legendary likes of Little Walter ("Mean Old World"), Bo Diddley ("I Can Tell"), Sister Rosetta Tharpe ("How Far From God") and Sam Cooke ("Bring It On Home To Me") and a handful of original songs too (the Chicago blues-styled "Ordinary People" is a standout). A wonderful and rousing addition to the Belfast native's impressive career. Information: VanMorrison.com.

New Reviews: Eagles of Death Metal, Paul Kelly, Peter Himmelman, Arcade Fire, A.J. Croce

Artist: Eagles of Death Metal
Title: I Love You All The Time: Live at The Olympia in Paris (Eagle Rock)
You might like if you enjoy: Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal
Tell me more: In the midst of Eagles of Death Metal's concert at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris on Feb. 16, 2016, gunmen entered the venue and opened fire. Tragically, that terrorist attack left 89 persons dead. Three months later, the Palm Desert, California-spawned rockers returned to France to complete the show as part of The Nos Amis Tour, performing at a packed Olympia Hall. That emotional return is captured on the new DVD release I Love You All The Time: Live at The Olympia in Paris. The concert kicks off with the powerful rocker "I Only Want You" and follow-up post-punk salvo "Don't Speak (I Came to Make a Bang!)," and the show never lets up. In addition to the full-length concert filmed in France, there are three memorable bonus cuts from a performance at the Taragram Ballroom in Los Angeles in October 2015; the high-octane blues rocker "Anything 'Cept The Truth" and Steppenwolf-styled '70s rocker "Bad Dream Mama" really capture the energy of the genre-blending outfit. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Paul Kelly
Title: Life Is Fine (Cooking Vinyl)
You might like if you enjoy: Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, Bruce Springsteen
Tell me more: A veritable treasure in his native Australia, singer-songwriter Paul Kelly has just released an aptly-titled album titled Life Is Fine that showcases the genuine strengths that make the artist so beloved at home. A gifted singer, songwriter and guitarist able to bring rock, folk, and Americana sounds together with ease, the new album is further elevated by the range of great singers and musicians who join Kelly on the mostly-upbeat project. The songs breathe and vibrate with life's power; the first track on the album "Rising Moon" mirrors the passion of a Springsteen track with its blend of rock dynamics, hopeful spirit and sense of the dramatic. "Finally Something Good" is a joyful exploration of love finally found. Beyond the instinctive and emotional pull of the songs is how Kelly has brought in guest vocalists Vika and Linda Bull to enhance select songs; indeed Vika Bull delivers lead vocals on the retro blues "My Man's Got a Cold." while Linda Bull sings the shimmering melodic folk rocker "Don't Explain." Kelly's own affecting baritone is more than up to the task everywhere else, including on the lively and expressive "Letter in the Rain," stirring country-flavored "Petrichor" and sparse title track. Life Is Fine will be released on Aug. 11. Information: paulkelly.com.au.

Artist: Peter Himmelman
Title: There Is No Calamity (Himmasongs Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Elvis Costello, Bruce Cockburn
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Peter Himmelman's There Is No Calamity (set for release on Aug. 11) is a marvellous album that tackles intimate and universal themes in tune with a troubled and imperfect world. The titles alone often reveal the core of the matter ("245th Peace Song," "Fear Is Our Undoing," "Rich Men Run the World"), but the disc's dozen songs extend far beyond cliche or creative rote. Produced by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, "There Is No Calamity" is a cohesive gathering of powerfully-performed songs that challenge while they entice, spun with nuanced arrangements and real world wisdom. On the folk rock album opener "245th Peace Song" Himmelman sings: "Scapegoating, killing, hating on the other / Isn't it time that we finally discover / Everyone you see could be your sister and your brother / Did you forget that in your pain? Has weakness made you insane?" The baroque pop "Burning Through the Days,"  acoustic-styled "The Depth of You" and poignant "I Pity You Poor Spirits" unlock more secrets with each listen, a testament to their depth and power. Information: peterhimmelman.com.

Artist: Arcade Fire
Title: Everything Now (Columbia Records Group)
You might like if you enjoy: Arcade Fire, the Shins
Tell me more: Make no mistake, many high-profile reviews of Arcade Fire's new album Everything Now have been negative. But while the Win Butler-led group's latest effort lacks the anthemic firepower of the band's earliest efforts (2004's Funeral and 2007 sophomore effort Neon Bible), it is simply ludicrous to ignore the joys of the Canadian troupe's 2017 effort. An intelligent exploration of today's obsession with the here and now, as well as a growing detachment of deep human connections courtesy of a dependence on technology and instant gratification make this an important album. Society's obsession with remaining young at any cost is artfully explored on the pulsating "Peter Pan," and there are other points across the 13-track disc where the dangers of celebrity culture, empty nightlife and suicide are explored amidst dance- and disco-minded soundscapes. Before dismissing this album, this writer encourages discerning listeners to check out the electronica sweep of "Creature Comforts" and the wistful "Put Your Money On Me," two fantastic songs that blend vibrant music making and topical lyrics in spades. Information: EverythingNow.com.

Artist: A.J. Croce
Title: Just Like Medicine (Compass)
You might like if you enjoy: Jim Croce, Leon Russell, Andrew McMahon
Tell me more: Bona fide talent and an independent artistic voice collectively work wonders for artists trying to escape the shadow of more famous parents. Just as drummer Zak Starkey has established himself as one of today's greatest rock drummers free of comparisons with his dad (Ringo Starr), singer-songwriter/piano great A.J. Croce has fully escaped all but passing nods to his late father Jim Croce (who sadly died in a plane crash in September 1973 at the age of 30). On his ninth full-length album Just Like Medicine, A. J. Croce puts his virtuoso talents at the keyboard and strong lead vocals on display in the service of 10 soulful songs that recall the sounds of Memphis and New Orleans. The songs here range from the graceful bluesy grooves of "Gotta Get Outta My Head" and buoyant "The Heart That Makes Me Whole" (co-written with Leon Russell) to the beautiful ballad "I Couldn't Stop," the latter injecting a bit of continental jazz into the disc's Muscle Shoals luster. The album also features a special track, "The Name of the Game," a blues-styled song that was the last song written by Jim Croce. Never recorded by the elder Croce, A.J. Croce's version is a true gem and features celebrated guitarist Vince Gill. Elsewhere on the fast-moving LP, guitar hero Colin Linden, electric guitar great Steve Cropper and the Muscle Shoals Horns are featured. Information: ajcrocemusic.com.

American Valhalla - The Story Of Iggy Pop, Joshua Homme and Post Pop Depression

The celebrated collaboration between Iggy Pop and Joshua Homme will be featured on a new documentary coming to theaters soon. Here is the official media release that landed in my inbox early today...

“YOU RISK NOTHING, YOU GAIN NOTHING”
-Joshua Homme
New York, NY (May 31, 2017)--More2Screen and Eagle Rock Films proudly present the theatrical release of American Valhalla - a documentary recounting the musical journey of Iggy Pop and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Joshua Homme. Co-directed by Homme and Andreas Neumann, the film explores the collaboration that evolved into the release of Iggy Pop’s most recent album Post Pop Depression (2016) and a subsequent critically-acclaimed tour. American Valhalla traces this kinship from Iggy’s initial text to Homme, through the album’s creation and the following tour, narrated by only those who were there.
A young Joshua Homme spent his days blasting Iggy Pop’s Repo Man theme from his boombox - the raw, raging sounds driving his hands to pick up a guitar and make a rock ruckus all his own. Fast forward a few decades -- his idol gets in touch with him out of the blue, and asks if he’d like to work on some songs. A casual collaboration developed into a landmark release for both artists: Post Pop Depression.
American Valhalla follows Iggy, Homme, his Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate Dean Fertita (guitar), and Matt Helders (drummer - Arctic Monkeys) as they wrote and recorded Post Pop Depression -- in total secrecy -- at Rancho De La Luna studio in the Mojave Desert. The film sits the viewer right in the room with Iggy, Homme, & co. behind the boards and between the riffs, examining their creative process. Lyric sheets, letters and journal entries open the doorway to the chemistry and energy of their musical experience.
In the midst of planning the tour to support the album, Iggy receives news of David Bowie’s passing, moving him to deep contemplation of his own impermanence and legacy…We watch him, at his most vulnerable, rehearse with Homme, Fertita and Helders, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar) and journeyman bassist/guitarist Matt Sweeney. Kicking off at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles last March, the tour culminated in a final, explosive show at the Royal Albert Hall in London (captured on Post Pop Depression: Live From The Royal Albert Hall, which was released on DVD and Blu-ray via Eagle Rock Entertainment last fall).
With conversations led by Anthony Bourdain, complemented by stunning photography and cinematography by Andreas Neumann, American Valhalla sets its lens on the journey from the studio, to rehearsals, to the concerts, capturing the growing bond between the musicians every step of the way.
Amidst this unflinching portrait of inspiration and creativity, a central mantra of American Valhalla’s 81 minutes is revealed: “You risk nothing, you gain nothing”.
Theater tickets on sale soon.

New Episode Premieres January 4th on PBS

Austin, TX—January 3, 2014—Austin City Limits (ACL) rings in the new year with new episodes, starting the second half of Season 39 with an electrifying hour from rock innovators Queens of the Stone Age. Recently nominated for two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Album, QOTSA prove they're one of the best bands today in a dynamic, full-hour performance. The new episode premieres Saturday, January 4th. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online at acltv.com immediately following the initial broadcast.

Queens' frontman Josh Homme appeared on ACL back in 2009 as part of the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (alongside Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones), but in this appearance he makes his long-awaited ACL debut with Queens of the Stone Age, the band he's led for nearly two decades. QOTSA recently released their first album in six years...Like Clockwork, debuting at #1 on Billboard's 200 and earning unanimous raves on critic's Year-End Best Albums of 2013 lists including Spin, Rolling Stone, Alternative Press and NPR. QOTSA combines metal, blues, thrash, punk and psychedelia into a sound that is both classic and unique. The band's ACL performance includes songs from the new record and hits from throughout their storied career. The scorching eleven-song set opens with signature tracks from their 2002 breakthrough Songs for the Deaf delivered with rabid guitars and head-banging drums. Ringleader Homme guides the Queens through songs from their latest release along with seminal records Rated R and Era Vulgaris, complete with grinding riffs, menace and muscle, sex and swagger, in an addictive performance that is a master class in rock'n'roll.

"Josh Homme is a genius, and he's made Queens of the Stone Age one of the best rock bands of our time,” says ACL executive producer Terry Lickona. “They make some serious rock and roll, but without taking themselves too seriously."
