Mew announces 'Visuals,' new album due out April 28, 2017

Hear New Track "Carry Me To Safety"
(Listen here:  http://found.ee/cmtsyoutube)

Mew is pleased to unveil news of the band's upcoming (seventh) album Visuals on April 28, 2017 through Play It Again Sam alongside details of a European run of live dates in May.

Unlike previous albums, Visuals arrives fairly quickly on the back of 2015's + - album and came to fruition as front-man Jonas Bjerre explains; "The live shows around that album saw us hit a creative peak, writing tracks on-the-road and the spark was lit. Breaking the normal cycle felt right and we wanted to make an album spontaneously retaining the energy we'd generated on that world tour, rather than wait the normal three or four years."

Recorded and self-produced in Copenhagen, Visuals was completed in under a year and sees Mew at its most concise, each song representing its own little chapter and narrative. The first taste of the album comes in the shape of the mesmerizing intricacies of the album's finale "Carry Me To Safety."

Meanwhile, the slow-build euphoria of album opener, "Nothingness And No Regrets," and expansive 80's-style pop of "The Wake Of Your Life" countered by the discordant stomp of the intriguingly titled "Candy Pieces All Smeared Out" and blissful glide of "In A Better Place," compete across eleven tracks that convey an irrepressible ebullience of a band on its debut album. Many of the newer tracks evolved in light of what was happening globally. "It was pretty dark last year on many levels, so lyrically that definitely came into play, it's an important reminder to treasure the here and now," says Bjerre. Visuals feels like the culmination for one of rock's most ambitious and inventive groups.

Twenty years into its career, Visuals is the distinctive sound of Mew seizing the moment...

Mew will embark on a short run of European shows in May (listed below) with plans for a North American tour in the works.

Visuals will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally through Play It Again Sam and is available to pre-order here: http://found.ee/mewstore

2016 Award Recipients Terry Lewis and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter; Jay Wanamaker, Roland Corporation North America President and CEO; 2017 Award Recipients Andy Summers and Jean-Michel Jarre; Mr. Jun-ichi Miki, Roland Corporation CEO and Representative Director; and 2016 Award Recipient Jimmy Jam
Roland and BOSS Present Lifetime Achievement Awards to Jean-Michel Jarre and Andy Summers
Second-annual awards presented to industry icons who have contributed greatly to the music industry while using Roland and/or BOSS gear throughout their careers

Los Angeles, CA, January 24, 2017 — During the 2017 Roland International Press Conference, held Wednesday, January 18, 2017, on the eve of the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, Roland and BOSS presented their second-annual Lifetime Achievement Awards to two monumental figures in music: French composer and keyboardist Jean-Michel Jarre (Roland) and British guitarist Andy Summers (Roland & BOSS), best known for his work as guitarist in legendary rock act The Police. The Roland/BOSS Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize individuals for their invaluable contributions to the music industry while using Roland and/or BOSS gear throughout their careers. Chris Halon, Roland Corporation U.S. Vice President, Marketing, and Leslie Lewis, former Director of The Recording Academy's P&E Wing, served as masters of ceremony for the gala event, which was attended by artists, musicians and leading journalists from the music industry.

The evening began with Scott Goldman, Vice President of MusiCares; Jay Wanamaker, president and CEO Roland Corporation North America; and Yoshi Ikegami, president of BOSS Corporation, presenting the Roland & BOSS Lifetime Achievement Award to Andy Summers. Rising to fame by the early 1980s as the guitarist with the multi-million record selling rock band The Police, Summers was among the most influential musicians of his generation. The band dominated the music scene and media in the 1980s with several number-one albums and singles. The band was the recipient of countless awards, including several GRAMMY®s. Summers’ innovative guitar playing created a new paradigm for guitarists in this period and has been widely imitated ever since. Since the Police disbanded, Summers has enjoyed a robust solo career and has found further success as a photographer. He has also been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Police.

Summers shared, “Musical creativity is sometimes enhanced and encouraged by having these wonderful devices. Over the years, the products that I have used from Roland, in particular, were able to open up what I was able to do. Of course I would have to cite my guitar sound with the Police in particular. ‘Don’t Stand so Close to Me’... ‘Walking on the Moon’... ‘Every Breath You Take’ — all those hits featured Roland products, and if I hadn’t had them, I might not be standing here today. Today, I’m still making records, of course. I believe in the interaction between technology and musical creativity, and one can inform the other. It seems to be particularly important if you play the electric guitar! Roland products have always made this interaction possible. It’s an interesting time, in that technology and music are in partnership to push the creative edge forward, and I think Roland is leading the way in that.”

Next, Mr. Jun-ichi Miki, Roland Corporation CEO and representative director, and Jay Wanamaker, Roland Corporation North America president and CEO, presented Jarre with a Roland lifetime achievement award. As a pioneer in electronic music, Jarre elevated the genre to new peaks of popularity as early as the late 70’s and 80’s and has sold 80 million albums worldwide to date. His dynamic concert experiences broke new ground and paved the way for state-of-the-art outdoor live events in the decades since. Apart from his activities directly linked to musical composition, Jarre has been spokesperson for IFPI (International Federation of Phonographic Industry) and has headed various lobbies for Internet copyright legislation before the European Parliament. Since June 2013 Jarre has served as president of CISAC (International Confederation of Authors and Composers Societies), succeeding the late Robin Gibb. He is also, for the past two decades, UNESCO spokesperson and ambassador, contributing to the awareness of two key UN Millennium projects: “Water for Life” and “Education for All.”

Jarre commented, “I started electronic music before these strange machines were even called synthesizers – back when we were actually considered a bunch of crazy guys working with machines; the whole idea was, for the first time, opening new doors and virgin territories. For the first time, we were able to become our own creators of sound. I wouldn’t be here without Roland synthesizers.”

Jay Wanamaker remarked, “The Roland and BOSS Lifetime Achievement Awards were created to acknowledge true innovators for their contributions to the music industry and thank them for their long association with our brands. We are honoring Jean-Michel Jarre for his body of work and pioneering use of Roland products, and Andy Summers for his era-defining guitar sound, achieved with the help of BOSS pedals. We thank them for their contributions to Roland and to music and the recording arts.”

Fuzzrocious Pedals bring Blast Furnace, Baxstabber pedals to NAMM

The Fuzzrocious Pedals booth has a number of cool pedals on display at this year's 2017 NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA. Photo: Robert Kinsler
I got to spend some time with Ryan Ratajski of Fuzzrocious Pedals and check out the company's latest pedals at the 2017 NAMM Show. Ryan and his wife Shannon Ratajski, run Fuzzrocious Pedals from their home in Mt. Laurel, NJ.

The Blast Furnace blends heavy/gated fuzz and otherworldly delay to a guitar player's sound. When I checked out the pedal, I would describe the sound as very dirty blues on steroids. Available in spring 2017, the Blast Furnace will retail for about $175.

The Baxstabber is a Baxandall-based tone shaper that uses 144 possible settings to help shape the EQ primarily in the midrange and output. It will likely retail for about $155.

The two new products, as well as all of the company's pedals have a super cool, retro-meets-neo traditional tattoo look too!

NAMM 2017 offers wealth of sonic gizmos, gadgets and groundbreaking products

The 2017 NAMM Show runs through Sunday, January 22, 2017.
The NAMM Show has hit the ground running in 2017.

Geoff Downes, left, with yours truly at NAMM.
In addition to music icons seemingly appearing around every aisle (by Thursday afternoon, I had run into Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, Geoff Downes of ASIA and Laurence Juber of Paul McCartney's Wings fame), there is a wealth of amazing music-related products and instruments that have caught the attention of trade show goers.

Based in Modena, Italy, IK Multimedia has revealed an advanced and affordable microphone system for acoustic guitar players. The iRig Acoustic Stage is a compact digital microphone system that brings the clarity and precision of a studio microphone to a small acoustic microphone that clips to the sound hole of a guitar.
The iRig Acoustic Stage is new for 2017.

"With this iRig Acoustic Stage mic, it allows you to get the quality sound of a studio microphone live," said IK Multimedia's Starr Ackerman. She also noted there is a feature to immediately kill feedback (a frequent challenge for those playing acoustic guitars live), and other features to assist in capturing an acoustic instrument's nuanced sound when recording. The iRig Acoustic Stage mic retails for $99.

It's no wonder the company's tagline is "Musicians First." Get more information on all of the company's impressive products at: http://www.ikmultimedia.comYou can get more specifics on the iRig Acoustic at: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigacousticstage/.

First look at both versions of Yamaha's beautiful
50th Anniversary drum set.

Buena Park-based Yamaha Corporation of America is the world's largest music manufacturer and has unveiled several new products at the NAMM Show. Blending the latest technology and attention to music making, the newly-designed YSV104 SILENT Violin is the most advanced version in the 20-year history of the instrument. The YSV104 is significantly lighter than previous models and utilizes engineering advances to improve the sound of the instrument.

"The YSV104 also incorporates Yamaha's SRT Powered system, Studio Response Technology, which vibrates when you are playing it," said Heather Mansell, product manager in Yamaha's orchestral strings, band & orchestral division.

Also showcased at this year's show is the company's limited-edition 50th Anniversary drum set. Get more information on Yamaha's new products via the company's official website: http://usa.yamaha.com. As of the date of this post (Jan. 21, 2017), Yamaha also has a part of its site specifically dedicated to new products showcased at the NAMM Show, available here: https://www.yamaha.com/us/namm/2017/Default.aspx.

Deering Banjo Company introduced its Goodtime Six instrument at this year's NAMM Show. While the San Diego-based company has produced previous six-string banjo models (which are tuned and play like a 6-string guitar), the Goodtime Six marks the first Deering instrument to retail for under $1,000.

"It's fantastic for the guitar player who wants to add that banjo-esque sound to their arsenal," said Jamie Latty, vice president of sales and marketing for Deering. That's Latty holding the beautiful new Goodtime Six in the photo on the right.

Here is Larry Mullen Jr., seen performing part of "Pride (In the Name of Love") at the special Yamaha Music "The Heart of Inspiration" event last night (January 20, 2017) at the 2017 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. The band performing with Larry included one of the world's most celebrated bass players, Nathan East, as well as singer-guitarist Butch Walker. Larry was honored with Yamaha Music's Lifetime Achievement in Musical Excellence Award, and joined a great group of musicians on stage to perform a short-but-inspired set that included "Desire," "Angel of Harlem," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "Pride (In The Name Of Love)," the last song which Larry dedicated to the late Martin Luther King Jr.

NAMM 2017 products preview

Since the 2017 NAMM Show is only a few weeks away, not surprising that music industry news is starting to emerge.

Here is a roundup of some of the exciting products and events that have been announced to date...

IK Multimedia announces and ships iRig Nano Amp - the versatile micro amp with a built-in iOS interface

iRig Nano Amp is an ultra-portable, battery-powered micro guitar amplifier and interface for iPhone and iPad that gives guitar and bass players access to unlimited tones in a compact, self-contained 3-watt amplifier that can drive up to a 4x12" guitar cab

IK Multimedia once again redefines a product category for guitarists with the newly released iRig Nano Amp - the versatile micro amp with a built-in iOS interface. iRig Nano Amp gives players both a standalone portable guitar amplifier PLUS an interface that lets them plug their guitar into an iPhone or iPad and use AmpliTube for iOS to access an unlimited and inspirational world of guitar tones on the go. iRig Nano Amp is available now from IK Multimedia and music and electronics retailers around the world.

The first micro amp and interface for mobile guitarists
iRig Nano Amp is a super-compact, battery-powered, self-contained micro amp and interface for iOS that players can use by itself, with headphones or even an external speaker cabinet - this power-packed amazing little amp can drive up to a 4x12" guitar cab! But what makes it more versatile than any other micro amp available is that it features the iRig circuitry so that guitarists can plug their iPhone or iPad into it with the included TRRS cable and tap into the limitless world of AmpliTube guitar tone and more.

Dual Mode Operation - AMP/DEVICE
What makes iRig Nano Amp so unique is that it operates in two different modes: AMP & DEVICE. In AMP mode it's a standalone amp for impromptu practice anywhere. In DEVICE mode it's used as an interface and amp for an iOS device. Plus, in both modes players can use the built-in speaker or hook up an external speaker cabinet - up to a 4x12" cab - for more volume and tonal clarity.

AMP mode
iRig Nano Amp operates as a straight-up guitar amp and features a British tone stack circuit with tone and volume controls for practice on the go. Players simply plug their guitar into the 1/4" guitar input, adjust the volume and gain settings, select the output type NORMAL/BRIGHT and rock out. The British tone circuit delivers sparkling clean tones at lower gain settings and a cascading wave of overdrive when cranked to the upper limits.

DEVICE mode
iRig Nano Amp is also an interface and monitor for an iOS device thanks to its integrated iRig circuit. Players use the included TRRS cable to hook up iRig Nano Amp in DEVICE mode to an iPhone or iPad and plug in to the amazing toneful world of AmpliTube to play, practice and record anywhere, any time. This is great for grabbing ideas in AmpliTube's 4-track looper or recording studio, or just practicing with the models of AmpliTube gear and more. When used in DEVICE mode, the internal tone stack circuit is bypassed and the volume knob controls the overall output of the amp. Headphones can be used in DEVICE mode for monitoring the processed signal coming from the device.

Drive a cab
iRig Nano Amp features a 1/4" speaker out jack that can drive up to a 4x12" cabinet. Once plugged in, guitarists will be floored by the volume and tonal definition thatiRig Nano Amp provides. An external cabinet can be used in both AMP and DEVICE modes providing the most flexibility of any micro amp available.

Under the hood
iRig Nano Amp is compact - it's just slightly larger than an iPhone and features a handy "kickstand" for tilting back the unit for better monitoring. Inside, iRig Nano Amp powers a 3" speaker with a 3-watt class A/B power amp. It features a 1/4" guitar input, a 1/4" speaker output, an 1/8" headphone jack, is powered by 3 AA batteries (included) and comes complete with a TRRS cable for connection to an iOS device. iRig Nano Amp can be used in 3 output monitoring options - in DEVICE mode with headphones for private practice, or with the internal speaker active or external speaker cabinet connected to the 1/4" speaker out in both DEVICE or AMP modes.

An expandable universe of tone
Since iRig Nano Amp lets players plug into their iPhone or iPad, they'll have access to AmpliTube for iOS - the largest and expandable collection of virtual gear available from the world's top manufacturers. Available models include amps and stomps from Fender®, Ampeg®, MESA/Boogie®, Orange® and signature artists like Slash, Jimi Hendrix™ and more. With iRig Nano Amp and AmpliTube, a complete guitar rig is always close at hand.

Pricing and availability
iRig Nano Amp is available now from IK retailers worldwide or from the IK online store for only $/€49.99 (excluding taxes).
