Jeff "Skunk" Baxter brings 'Speed of Heat' to The Coach House

Who: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Roselune

Where: The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA

When: Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022

Review by Robert Kinsler

Photography by Bob Steshetz

Over the past 35+ years I've been fortunate to see some of the world's greatest guitarists at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. From Buddy Guy to the late Alvin Lee of Ten Years After fame, the long list also includes the far-flung likes of Nils Lofgren, Jason Falkner, Walter Trout, Tab Benoit, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Peter Frampton, Michael Gurley (with Dada), Jim Babjak (with The Smithereens), Joe Bonamassa and countless others.

Jeff "Skunk" Baxter in the zone.

On Thursday night, I checked in at the Coach House to add another notable guitar master to that list; Jeff "Skunk" Baxter came to the venue as part of a West Coast Tour in support of his debut solo album Speed of Heat (BMG/Renew Records). The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is known for his marvelous fret work with Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers in the 1970s and with Spirit in the 1980s. Equally impressive are his contributions as a session / studio session guitarist where he has worked with the likes of Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Eric Clapton, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Rod Stewart and Burton Cummings.

"Thank you so much for coming out," the personable Baxter said after coming on stage. "We'll be playing the new record top to bottom."

From left, CJ Vanston, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Mark Damian and Hank Horton.

Indeed, Baxter and his top-tier band
— keyboardist CJ Vanston, drummer-backing vocalist Mark Damian and bassist-lead vocalist Hank Horton — proceeded to champion the Speed of Heat track listing while ultimately delivering an opportunity to celebrate Baxter's contributions to popular music over the past 50 years.

Opening with "Ladies From Hell," the quartet took the enthusiastic audience on a sonic trip across the Atlantic with a Scottish-flavored ramble. Baxter is a guitarist able to play with both fire and technical precision, and that was evidenced immediately with the dynamics displayed in the instrumental opener.

Concertgoers were then rewarded with a rousing and truly rocking take on the Steely Dan favorite "My Old School," with Baxter handling both the signature fretwork and lead vocals of the 1973 single. The troupe then turned on a dime to perform the jazzy "Giselle," a beautiful and moody work with a sublime arrangement where all four musicians played gracefully to bolster the beautiful composition.

CJ Vanston at The Coach House.

Throughout the set Baxter and Vanston would provide insights into each of the selections, further elevating the magic of the showcase.

Hank Horton at The Coach House.

The propulsive, aptly-titled rocker "Speed of Heat," ambitious flamenco-tinged "My Place In The Sun" (with Horton acing the vocal lines that Michael McDonald completed on the album recording) and rollicking surf rock-styled "Apache" (the latter an enduring 1960 release from the Shadows) were among the other early standouts of the night.

Mark Damian behind the drum kit on Aug. 4, 2022.

A completely reworked jazz-soaked version of the 1972 Steely Dan favorite "Do It Again," an amped take on "I Can Do Without," the sly rocker "Bad Move" (a song co-written by Baxter, Vanston and Clint Black) and funky "Insecurity" were among the standouts played later in the two-hour set.

Before launching into his encore Baxter thanked the crowd for listening to the track listing of songs from his new album, and also noted: "Let's hear it for the Coach House."

The first selection of the encore was an artfully reworked take on "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," with the extended version including a symphonic opening featuring Vanston's keyboards before the 1974 classic's original arrangement was pushed to the forefront.

Fans of Baxter's work with the Doobie Brothers were rewarded with a particularly interesting take on "China Grove." This version was fully reworked into a countrified reading that served as another reminder how great musicians can create magic in ways listeners may never expect.

Opening the bill was a promising young area quintet Roselune that played a blend of rock, Americana, surf rock and jam rock with confidence and solid chops.

June 9, 2022 (Los Angeles): Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro has released a new music video for "Why Not", written and sung by multi-platinum hitmaker and movie soundtrack king Kenny Loggins. The track is a deliciously upbeat slice of soul-pop with hooks for days and an effervescent ukulele solo that will set pulses racing. View the video here.

“Working with Kenny was a blast,” says Shimabukuro. “We started off doing things simply, but once we got going, Kenny wanted to try out different ideas, and I just let him go. Watching him do his thing was a real education in record making.”

Shimabukuro’s incredible latest album Jake & Friends (Mascot Label Group/Music Theories Recordings and JS Records) was released on November 12, 2021 and features a who’s who of music royalty: Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Moon Taxi, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Vince Gill and Amy Grant, Jon Anderson, Ziggy Marley, Warren Haynes, Jack Johnson, Jesse Colin Young, Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel, Sonny Landreth, Lukas Nelson, and Billy Strings.

“I have to pinch myself when I see those names on my own album,” he says. “It’s like, ‘Did that really happen?’ Making the album was a real challenge, but I’m deeply honored that all artists agreed to record with me.”

Shimabukuro is set to perform two shows next week in New York state before kicking off his UK tour on June 16. For more information on Jake, or to purchase tickets for his tour, please visit www.jakeshimabukuro.com.

New Music: Bob Marley and The Wailers, Nina Simone, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Buck Owens and His Buckeroos

The horrific events unfolding in Afghanistan over the past several weeks, a continuing pandemic, devastation in the wake of Hurricane Ida and wildfires in California, and an escalating wave of violent crime gripping America can collectively feel overwhelming to be sure. Leave it to a diverse field of great artists to lift us up with song via a range of long-lost treasures and reissues as well as a long-awaited new studio album.

Artist:
 Bob Marley and The Wailers
Title: The Capitol Session '73 (Tuff Gong / Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Bob Marley and The Wailers, Peter Tosh, Joe Higgs
Tell me more: On the eve of global super stardom, Bob Marley and The Wailers performed a closed-door set at Capitol Records Tower in Los Angeles in October 1973. Nearly a half century after the performance featuring Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Joe Higgs, Aston Barrett, Carlton Barrett and Earl "Wya" Lindo was captured via four cameras, the performance is coming to DVD+CD, colored 2LP vinyl, digital and audio CD (the latter format reviewed here) on Sept. 3. The footage was long considered lost until a freelance researcher uncovered a few frames. After more than 20 years, the complete film was found, restored and remastered. A single listen to the audio recording reveals the exhaustive efforts that included a search of archives and storage units in New York, London, San Diego and beyond was worth the effort. Marley is rightfully considered reggae's most influential and important artist; all of the Jamaican artist's strengths as a singer, songwriter, musician and band leader are on display across The Capitol Session '73. After Tosh (who would soon embark on his own successful career) sings the opener "You Can't Blame The Youth," Marley takes the reins for a compelling set of timeless protest- and social justice-minded classics. The intoxicating "Slave Driver," rhythmic "Burnin' & Lootin'," entrancing "Stir It Up," defiant "No More Trouble" and explosive closer "Get Up Stand Up" make for a magical trip back to the metamorphosis of a legend. Information: bobmarley.com.

Artist:
 Nina Simone
Title: Little Girl Blue (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: Nina Simone, Dorothy Donegan, Mary Lou Williams
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/composer/virtuoso pianist Nina Simone burst on the world in 1959 with the release of Little Girl Blue. Only 25 at the time, her brilliant debut has been newly remastered and reissued; it is available via vinyl, audio CD and digital platforms. Listening to the timeless album today is still an astonishing experience, all the more impressive when you learn that the 11 tracks on the disc were recorded in a single 14-hour recording session where she was accompanied by Jimmy Bond (bass) and Albert "Tootie" Heath (drums).  While the future Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs a lone original work on "Little Girl Blue" (the dashing instrumental "Central Park Blues"), her fleet take on Duke Ellington's swinging "Mood Indigo," refined reading of Arthur Hamilton's "He Needs Me," buoyant jazz-meets-Baroque "Love Me or Leave Me" and the classical music-flavored title track — the latter which creatively incorporates the traditional Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas — all showcase her signature contralto vocals and improvisational talents at the keyboard. Several of her best-known recordings are also on the album; her evocative version of "I Loves You, Porgy" (a major hit at the time of the album's release) and joyful "My Baby Just Cares For Me" are truly remarkable. Information: bmg.com and amazon.com.

Artist:
 Toad the Wet Sprocket
Title: Starting Now (Abe's Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Toad the Wet Sprocket, Pete Yorn, Del Amitri
Tell me more: Toad the Wet Sprocket is back with their first new studio album since 2013 — the 10-track masterwork Starting Now — that also happens to be one of the best new albums I've heard in 2021. The Santa Barbara-spawned heroes don't tinker too much with their signature sound blending folk and alternative rock styles but now that it's 2021 the trio uses its musical voice in the service of songs aimed at the here and now. The events of 2020 and 2021 have made most of us rethink our own lives and the world itself and singer-guitarist Glen Phillips, bassist Dean Dinning and lead guitarist Todd Nichols capture and explore those forces brilliantly on Starting Now. Take "Hold On," where singer Phillips delivers a poignant plea: "I need a little bit of hope, one ray of light / need just enough peace to make it through the night." In the glorious title track Phillips delivers a more hopeful message as he sings: "I've wasted years, won't waste another instant / I fed my fears on things that haven't been yet / Well hope don't mean you sit there, just waiting for the changes / It's fighting for the long shot / It's getting in the trenches." The songs are uniformly strong on "Starting Now." The yearning "Transient Whales," Americana-styled "In the Lantern Light," experimental "Dual Citizen," affecting climate change warning-aimed "Fever" and soulful "Best Of Me" (the latter featuring guest vocalist Michael McDonald) are among my other favorites on the terrific return. Information: ToadTheWetSprocket.com.

Artist:
 Buck Owens and His Buckeroos
Titles: Sweet Rosie Jones; I've Got You on My Mind Again; Tall Dark Stranger (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard
Tell me more: Beginning earlier this month and continuing through Oct. 1, Omnivore Recordings is in the midst of reissuing nine albums featuring Buck Owens and His Buckeroos. The albums are being released in their original configurations on audio CD and Digital (in both standard and high resolution); each has been mastered from the original analog tapes by Michael Graves and produced for release by Grammy-winner Cheryl Pawelski, and all feature expanded artwork and new liner notes from Owens biographer Randy Poe.

One of the reasons Owens was so successful can be heard across the myriad of reissues; his musical approach was straightforward with his signature baritone vocals used to propel songs featuring winning story lines and clever wordplay, catchy vocal choruses ( with two-part vocal harmonies featuring his guitarist Don Rich) and nuanced musicianship from his terrific Buckeroos.Sweet Rosie Jones was the troupe's third album of 1968; 10 of the 12 songs on the set were written or co-written by Owens. The title track, a lovely acoustic ballad, hit number 2 on the country singles chart; the parade of other great cuts on the disc includes the uptempo "Hello Happiness, Goodbye Loneliness," high-flying "If I Had Three Wishes," twangy delight "The Heartaches Have Just Started" and authentic cover of Merle Haggard's "Swinging' Doors."

Another 1968 release, I've Got You on My Mind Again, featuring outstanding tracks including the catchy "Let the World Keep On a Turnin'" (a hit duet with Buck's son Buddy Alan) and tuneful "I Wanna Be Wild and Free" and "Sing a Happy Song." Originally released in September of 1969, Tall Dark Stranger, features the album's enticing hit title track that was a number 1 on the singles chart as well as the mournful "White Satin Bed (co-written with Gene Price) and captivating "Across This Town and Gone
." Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Music Worth Buying: 'Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIX' collection, 'The Dukes of September,' Break of Reality

Why would I include the latest Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection in a roundup of noteworthy new music titles?

Look no further than the first of four episodes on Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIX (set for release by Shout! Factory on Tuesday, March 25), a rightful skewering of the 1957 teen exploitation flick Untamed Youth. The film not only features early rock 'n' roll hero Eddie Cochran ("C'Mon Everybody," "Summertime Blues") but has the distinction of boasting the first-ever on-screen performance of a rock song sung by a female (famed actress Mamie Van Doren). To be sure the movie itself is dated and campy, but thanks to the clever work of the writers and performers of MST3K, hilarity ensues. Among the extras on the new collection is an interview with the aforementioned Van Doren, and the original theatrical trailer for Untamed Youth. The other three films that get a well-deserved Satellite of Love treatment include Hercules And The Captive Women, The Thing That Couldn't Die and The Pumaman. Laughter aplenty! Information: ShoutFactory.com.

Get Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIX

Televised earlier this month as part of PBS' "Great Performances" series, The Dukes of September is now available on both DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of 429 Records. Captured live at Lincoln Center in November 2012, the Dukes of September Rhythm Revue (featuring Donald Fagen, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs and a top-tier group of seven other musicians and two back-up singers) features not only some of the trio's biggest hits but rock and R&B nuggets such as "Love T.K.O." and "Sweet Soul Music."  There are all kinds of highlights on the disc (which looks and sounds fantastic), notably Fagen leading the way through Steely Dan's "Kid Charlegmagne" (which features some masterful guitar work from Jon Herrington) and an inspired "Lido Shuffle." For more information, visit www.429records.com/dukesofseptember.

Blending rock and classical with an authenticity rarely reached, cello-anchored band Break of Reality is back with a new collection titled Ten set for release on March 25 that features 10 instrumental compositions co-written by Patrick Laird (cello) and Ivan Trevino (drums, percussion). From the melancholy-blanketed rocker "Helix" to the more atmospheric "Star" and cinematic "Storm's End" and "Nine Deep," Laird, Trevino and cellists Laura Metcalf and Adrian Daurov, and several guest players, create a world that is at once familiar and new. Magic music making indeed. Information: www.breakofreality.com.

Inbox Update: The Doobie Brothers, Gary Clark Jr., 'Wrecking Crew' screening

This is a long post, but features news and updates from around the sonic universe. What a great way to get an early start on the weekend, right?

'Let The Music Play – The Story Of The Doobie Brothers' coming to DVD, Blu-ray and Digital Video on November 13, 2012

Eagle Rock Entertainment, on November 13, 2012, will release Let The Music Play – The Story Of The Doobie Brothers on DVD, Blu-ray, and Digital Video.

Let The Music Play is the authorized story of The Doobie Brothers from their beginnings in California in 1970 to worldwide success, selling over 40 million albums during their long career. The film features interviews with band members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald, John McFee ,Tiran Porter, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, their manager Bruce Cohn and long term producer Ted Templeman, revealing the full story of the band’s highs and lows through four decades of musical evolution.

The Doobie Brothers breakthrough came with “Listen To The Music” in 1972, and they went on to experience both sustained success and line-up changes in the mid-seventies. The band made a change of musical direction and enjoyed further success following the arrival of Michael McDonald in 1976. Worn out by non-stop touring and internal disagreements, the band broke up after a “farewell” concert in 1982. There were sporadic reunions in the eighties before the band reformed permanently in the early nineties and have continued touring and recording ever since.

As well as the film itself, Let The Music Play – The Story Of The Doobie Brothers features bonus live performances of: “Rainy Day Crossroad Blues,” “Without You,” “Listen To The Music,” “Black Water,” “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “Rockin’ Down The Highway,” “Neal’s Fandango,” “Long Train Runnin’,” and “China Grove”.

Let The Music Play – The Story Of The Doobie Brothers is more than just a rockumentary, exposing their incredible career and achievements. Boasting an additional nine live tracks, with a total running time of well over two hours, this is the complete package for any fan of this amazing band.
