New music: Caroline Cotter, Idina Menzel, Julie Christensen

Acclaimed artists Caroline Cotter, Idina Menzel and Julie Christensen are back with essential new albums.

Artist:
Caroline Cotter
Title: Gently as I Go (Independent)
You might like if you enjoy: Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Natalie Merchant, Carol Martini
Tell me more: On her newly released album Gently as I Go, Maine-based folk singer Caroline Cotter showcases a lovely soprano heard on a range of introspective and heartfelt originals. The album opener "Coming Your Way" is a beautiful introduction where Cotter's lyrics and vocal yearning paint a picture of two soulmates who share a powerful bond and how no distance can keep them apart. On "The Year Of the Wrecking Ball," there is a deep sense of melancholy to be sure about the ghosts of childhood and the painful loss of the comfort we find in family: "Inside the bedroom I hear her still on the phone / 33 years of pleading God, please don't leave me alone." The album's first single, "Don't Wait," is a song of encouragement pushing listeners to seize the day; indeed the song's strong call includes the admonition to: "Don't wait for the sun to rise to get out of bed / Don't wait for money to get ahead / Don't wait for praise to feel proud and strong / Don't wait for the true love to feel you belong." Other bewitching tracks on the outstanding independent album include the sweeping "The Call" (written for her 104 year old grandfather's funeral), the heartbreaking "Gently As I Go" that explores a doomed relationship and hopeful album closer "Morning Mantra." The music on Cotter's third album is artfully sparse, with gentle instrumentation adding mood to her poignant and beautiful songs that capture love, loss, hope and the most powerful experiences and emotions that shape our lives. Artist: Idina Menzel
Title: Drama Queen (BMG)
You might like if you enjoy: Cheryl Lynn, Cher, ABBA
Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter and Tony Award-winning performer Idina Menzel conjures up the groundbreaking dance music of the late 1970s and early '80s on her aptly-titled Drama Queen. The album is a true departure from her six past albums, but the aptly-dubbed "Queen of Broadway" brings bona fide vocal firepower and joy to the collection of dance floor-minded anthems on the nine-track album. The lead track "Move" immediately immerses the listener into an infectious disco moodscape, the driving beat catapulting the song forward with every beat. The contemporary R&B track "Beast," ABBA-styled gem "Dramatic," soulful "Paradise" (the latter featuring guest vocals and cool guitar work from Nile Rodgers), funky "Make Me Hate Me" and soaring "Funny Kind of Lonely" further expand Menzel's reach across the outstanding album. In addition to Menzel's talents as a great vocalist and songwriter, a slew of global hitmakers (including the aforementioned Rodgers as well as Jake Shears, Eren Cannata, Simon Wilcox, Lindy Robbins, Michelle Zarlenga and others) bring their skills to elevate the ambitious project. While so much music today is focused on the dangers of romance, self doubt and turmoil across a divided planet, there is something to be said for a stellar collection of songs geared toward escape and the lure of the dance floor.  Information: Website idinamenzel.com.

Artist: Julie Christensen
Title: The Price We Pay for Love (Wirebird Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, Rachael Yamagata
Tell me more: Julie Christensen's latest full-length album The Price We Pay for Love features the New Mexico-based artist teaming up with bassist and string arranger Terry Lee Burns for an album of genuinely moving tracks that flawlessly blend Americana, jazz, blues and singer-songwriter stylings. Delivering a mix of self-penned tracks and original arrangements of material written by other artists, Christensen's emotive vocals shine across the 10-track disc. A mesmerizing 7-minute take on Joni Mitchell's "Hejira" opens the album, with Burns' majestic bass playing bringing a lofty creativity to the musical reading. Christensen brings palpable emotion and forcefulness to the acoustic Michael Moss-penned "Goldbridge Road" as well as the Jimmy Webb classic "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," the latter enhanced by John Funkhouser's touch on the piano. Other highlights on the wonderful The Price We Pay for Love include the tender original "How He Lost Her," plaintive version of Steve Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home" and sorrowful closer "Hilltop." Glen Campbell's recording of "Wichita Lineman" inducted into National Recording Registry

Amidst all the bad news over the past month, I was happy to see one of my favorite songs acknowledged in such deserving fashion. Robert Kinsler

Check out Episode 6 of our "Top 100 Songs" where I celebrate "Wichita Lineman" and discuss why it is one of my favorite songs of all time:

Glen Campbell's classic recording of "Wichita Lineman," written by Jimmy Webb, inducted into National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress

LOS ANGELES – MARCH 25, 2020 – Glen Campbell’s recording of “Wichita Lineman,” with its yearning refrain of “I need you more than want you and I want you for all time,” has been inducted into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, ensuring that, like the lonesome lover’s sentiment in the timeless song, it will live on until the end of time.
The honor was announced today by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden who inducted the recording along with two dozen others in the 2019 class of audio treasures worthy of preservation because of their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the nation’s recorded sound heritage. Each year, the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress chooses recordings showcasing the range and diversity of American recorded sound heritage in order to increase preservation awareness. The diversity of nominations received highlights the richness of the nation's audio legacy and underscores the importance of assuring the long-term preservation of that legacy for future generations.
“‘Wichita Lineman’ is the ultimate expression of the musical and spiritual bond between my husband Glen and his songwriting soulmate Jimmy Webb,” said Kim Campbell, Campbell’s widow. “Despite ‘Wichita Lineman’ being such an important song for Glen it was also one of his favorites and I know he’d be so thrilled and honored to have his original recording preserved in the Library of Congress.”
“I’m humbled and, at the same time for Glen, I am extremely proud,” said Jimmy Webb. “I wish there was some way I could reach him to say, ‘Glen, you know they’re doing this. They are putting our music in a mountain--it will be preserved for all time.”
Written by Jimmy Webb in 1968, “Wichita Lineman” was the title track of Campbell’s 12th album which was released by Capitol Records in November 1968 as the singer and musician was becoming a television star, film actor and crossover sensation. Following the unprecedented success Campbell experienced as a result of having a hit with Webb’s “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” which was released the year prior and garnered two GRAMMY Awards, Campbell asked the songwriter to write another geographical song as a follow up to “Phoenix.” For the song’s inspiration, Webb thought back to an indelible image he had etched in his memory that he once saw while driving through rural Oklahoma of a solitary lineman working on a telephone pole in an endless line of poles and the loneliness and longing that a man like that might feel. On deadline to deliver the song, Webb turned in a version that he felt was unfinished, warning producer and arranger Al De Lory that he needed to add a third verse. Unbeknownst to him, Campbell, who said he cried upon hearing it because he was homesick, recorded it immediately, adding a bass guitar interlude to complete the song. Webb initially assumed that Campbell didn’t like the song since he hadn’t received any feedback so was surprised to find out from Campbell when he ran into him several weeks later that he had recorded it.
With its instantly recognizable opening six-note bass intro that gives way to sweeping, orchestral strings, tremolo guitar and Campbell’s plaintive vocals, the wistful pop-country ballad “Wichita Lineman” didn’t sound like anything else of the day when released more than 50 years ago and still sounds singular today. Produced by Al De Lory and recorded with the legendary Los Angeles studios musicians The Wrecking Crew (Al Casey, James Burton, Carol Kaye, Don Bagley, Jim Gordon and Al De Lory), the multimillion-selling "Wichita Lineman" was a massive crossover hit for Campbell that went to No. 3 on the pop chart and topped the country and adult contemporary charts for weeks. The song earned several GRAMMY nominations including Record of the Year and Best Male Contemporary Pop Vocal Performance, was nominated for Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Award and stayed atop the country music charts for 20 weeks where it was the year’s top release in the genre. “Wichita Lineman” helped propel the album of the same name to multi-platinum status selling more than two million copies and becoming Campbell’s first #1 album where it stayed on the pop chart for five weeks.
“Wichita Lineman” has proven to be that rare song that transcends genres, eras and cultures. It has been recorded and covered live by hundreds of artists from across the globe including Guns N’ Roses, James Taylor, Johnny Cash, José Feliciano, Keith Urban, King Curtis, Kool & The Gang, The Meters, Ray Charles, R.E.M., Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66, Smokey Robinson, Toby Keith, Tom Jones, Wayne Newton, and many others. After Campbell's death, Webb sang the song with Little Big Town in a heartfelt tribute during the 51st Annual Country Music Association Awards.
To experience some of Campbell’s classic performances of the song as well as inspired versions by a host of the aforementioned musicians head over to YouTube for a curated playlist for a sampling of some of the best performances. Watch here: https://UMe.lnk.to/WichitaLinemanPR/YouTube
An enduring classic and one of Campbell’s signature songs, “Wichita Lineman” is widely considered one of the best songs ever written. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked it at #195 of the “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time” and in 2014 they ranked it #16 of the “100 Greatest Country Songs Of All Time.” In 2000, it was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. This latest honor for the late country icon who died in 2017 following a courageous years-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease comes shortly after the February 2020 opening of The Glen Campbell Museum and Rhinestone Stage at the corner of Broadway and 2nd Avenue in Nashville. The museum celebrates Glen Campbell’s incredible life and legacy through never-before-seen artifacts from his early years on the farm in Arkansas through his climb to super-stardom and features an exciting array of instruments, awards, stage outfits and keepsakes including intimate family photos. Harry Nilsson's final album, 'Losst and Founnd' finally to see the light of day, Nov. 22 via Omnivore Recordings.

This is news definitely worth sharing!

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The music world was stunned on January 15, 1994, when superstar vocalist Harry Nilsson was struck down by a heart attack at the young age of 52.

What the music world did not know at the time was that the multiple Grammy®award-winning artist was at work on his first album of original material in nearly fifteen years — fans would have to wait another quarter of a century to hear it.

Omnivore Recordings is proud to release Losst and Founnd, a brand new album by Harry Nilsson. Produced by Mark Hudson (Ringo Starr, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne), the album features nine Nilsson originals as well as covers by Jimmy Webb and Yoko Ono. With musical contributions from an all-star cast of musicians, including Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, Webb, and Harry’s son, Kiefo, the album features classic Nilsson melodies that have been his trademark for over 50 years.

Nilsson’s estate is administered by Warner Chappell Music (WCM), who championed the album as part of the company’s effort to create new opportunities around catalog. WCM is working on a four-series podcast delving into the backstory behind Losst and Foundd, to be released leading up to the November album drop.

Losst and Founnd will be available in CD, LP and Digital on November 22, 2019.

Nilsson’s legacy — a body of work including “Everybody’s Talkin’,” “Without You,” “Coconut,” “Jump Into the Fire, “Spaceman,” and “I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City” — has been bolstered in the last few years with the successful documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin’ About Him)? and the many, many usages of Harry’s songs in film and television including this year’s Netflix hit Russian Doll, which features Nilsson’s “Gotta Get Up” from his classic Nilsson Schmilsson album.

From the liner notes by producer Mark Hudson: “Dear Harry . . . It’s been a little over 25 years since we’ve had one of “our conversations” and I can’t tell you how much I miss your wisdom, humor, passion, stories, and most of all . . . your music . . . Anyway, I finally finished the record we were working on . . . All of your ideas I would write down, and I have put them into this project . . . Making this album was a dream come true for me. I promised you we would finish it and get it out there one day and that day has finally come!"

Find out why everybody’s still talkin’ about one of rock’s greatest singer/songwriters with new music by Harry Nilsson on Losst and Founnd.

Glen Campbell's "Adios" video premiering today on CMT Music and CMT.com

VIDEO FOR GLEN CAMPBELL’S “ADIÓS” PREMIERING TODAY ON CMT MUSIC & CMT.COM

DIRECTED BY PETER ZAVADIL AND FEATURING DAUGHTER ASHLEY CAMPBELL AND GRANDSON JEREMY OLSON

Los Angeles – July 24, 2017 –  The video for “Adiós,” the bittersweet Jimmy Webb-penned title track of country legend Glen Campbell’s acclaimed farewell album, will exclusively premiere today, July 24 via CMT where it will be broadcast repeatedly throughout the day on their 24-hour music video channel, CMT Music, and online at CMT.com. It will then go into current rotation. Directed by Peter Zavadil, the award-winning director behind videos for Eric Church, Lady Antebellum and The Black Keys, the video features iconic archival videos and photos of the Rhinestone Cowboy interspersed between the story of his guitar journeying from Nashville to California where it plays its last note. It begins with Glen’s daughter Ashley Campbell handing off the guitar in Nashville and culminates with his grandson Jeremy Olson giving the six string an emotional sendoff. Watch the video here:http://www.cmt.com/videos/glen-campbell/1713952/adios.jhtml

“In my view, "Adios" is Glen's farewell to the spotlight. I wanted the music video to reflect those sentiments,” says Zavadil. “The guitar is a symbol of Glen's legacy...a 'spiritual baton' as it were, carried on by all those influenced by his music, beginning with one of his daughters and ending with one of his grandsons. The fact that no one will ever hold a match to Glen’s skill on the guitar is memorialized by giving his guitar a proper ‘Viking Funeral’ on the California coast. The project truly was an honor and an adventure.”

Glen’s daughter Ashley, who is following her father’s footsteps and performs banjo and sings backing vocals throughout the Adiós album, opens the video by passing off Glen’s guitar and thus starting its last tour. “My father's music has touched so many people's lives so I hope that this video will resonate with a lot of people,” says Ashley. “Music moves through us all in different ways, lighting a fire in each of us. That fire will always be burning as music keeps moving and as each of us continues to pass the torch.”

Several generations of the Campbell family are featured in the video as it concludes with Glen’s grandson, Jeremy Olson, in an emotional final goodbye. Olson says: "My grandfather is a man I've loved and admired my entire life. The emotion when dealing with a project that is his last, sung his unique way, really hit home and brought back all the amazing memories he and I have shared. This single and album truly encompasses his career and is something I know he would be proud of, which is why I couldn't be more honored to be involved.”

Glen’s farewell album, Adiós, was released on June 9 via UMe to universal acclaim. In the U.S., the album debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 giving Glen his 16th Top 40 album and his 19th Top 10 Country Record of his astonishing career. The album, which caps off an extraordinary career that has spanned more than six decades and 50 million albums sold, has been hailed as one of his best. It has received an incredible reaction around the world from the likes of Rolling Stone, USA Today, NPR, Billboard and many others.
Adiós was recorded in 2012 following Glen’s “Goodbye Tour” which he launched after revealing he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As Glen’s wife of 34 years, Kim Campbell, explains in the album’s touching liner notes, “Glen’s abilities to play, sing and remember songs began to rapidly decline after his diagnosis in 2011. A feeling of urgency grew to get him into the studio once again to capture what magic was left. It was now or never.” She concludes, “What you’re hearing when listening to Adiós is the beautiful and loving culmination of friends and family doing their very best for the man who inspired, raised, and entertained them for decades – giving him the chance to say goodbye to his fans, and put an amazing collection of songs onto the record store shelves.”

Produced by longtime friend and bandmate, Carl Jackson, the 12-track collection features songs from some of his favorite songwriters like Jimmy Webb, his longtime collaborator behind some of his biggest hits like “Wichita Lineman,” “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” and “Galveston.” Other songwriters featured are Willie Nelson, who duets on his classic, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Roger Miller, Jerry Reed and Dickey Lee.

Campbell who turned 81 in April, is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He lives in Nashville where he is surrounded by his loving family and getting the very best of care.

Enduring legends shine on new releases

Some of the most important and beloved music heroes of the late 20th century are featured on crucial new releases.

Artist: Simple Minds
Title: Acoustic In Concert (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
You might like if you enjoy: Simple Minds, U2, Coldplay
Tell me more: Although it has been 40 years since Simple Minds formed in Glasgow, Scotland, the troupe's music resonates with as much power as ever as on the DVD+CD release Acoustic In Concert. Captured at London's legendary Hackey Empire on Nov. 10, 2016, Simple Minds' performance as part of BBC Radio 2's "In Concert" series is a revelation for those who love textured and artful melodic alt rock. While the band members use acoustic instruments this is definitely no easy listening affair. Singer Jim Kerr leads the ensemble through a potent and impassioned concert that includes well-known hits such as "Promised You a Miracle," "Don't You (Forget About Me)" and "Sanctify Yourself," as well as tributes to some of the group's own heroes (David Bowie's "Andy Warhol" and Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot"). The concert ends with Simple Minds being joined on stage by groundbreaking English singer-songwriter Steve Harley to perform a joyous "Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Glen Campbell
Title: Adiós (Ume)
You might like if you enjoy: Glen Campbell, Jimmy Webb, Willie Nelson
Tell me more: The process of recording Glen Campbell's Adiós was understandably difficult. After all, the legendary country and pop singer was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2011 and retired from live performing in November 2012. After his final tour, Campbell was able to work with his wife Kim and producer/musician Carl Jackson to record a number of songs he had talked about over the years for what would be his final studio LP. Across Adiós Campbell still displays a stunning tenor voice and the album sounds polished despite the challenges of his debilitating disease. Among the highlights on the album are Campbell's interpretations of four Jimmy Webb's songs. Among the crop of Webb contributions are the lovely "Just Like Always," the wistful "It Won't Bring Her Back" and "Postcard From Paris," the latter especially touching with three of Campbell's children singing the bittersweet line "I wish you were here" throughout the song. There is also a magical pairing of Campbell and Willie Nelson on "Funny How Time Slips Away," with the two icons swapping verses. Information: GlenCampbell.com.

Artist: Chuck Berry
Title: CHUCK (Dualtone Music)
You might like if you enjoy: Chuck Berry
Tell me more: Chuck Berry's final gift to the world ranks with one of the late icon's best-ever recordings. Berry, who died at age 90 in March 2017, had not released a new studio album since 1979 before CHUCK was issued earlier this month. The rock 'n' roll founding father is joined by a collection of guests and family members that joyfully join forces to capture Berry's exuberant blend of rock, blues, hillbilly and R&B that has influenced everyone from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to ELO and Gary Clark Jr. Rock's first-ever guitar hero, Berry was also a master storyteller and his lyrics doubled as pure poetry. All those remarkable gifts are on display here; the infectious "Wonderful Woman" features Berry as well as his son, grandson and Texas bluesman Gary Clark Jr. The album's first single "Big Boys" is a buoyant and cheerful track that captures the energy of Berry's beloved early singles with a driving rhythm and high-spirited lead guitar work. Other songs explore his love of blues (particularly an enticing cover of "You Go To My Head"), old styled country music (the tender ballad "Darlin', a duet he sings with daughter Ingrid Berry) and Caribbean vibes (the reggae-styled "Jamaica Moon"). Information: chuckberry.com.

Artist: Ray Davies
Title: Americana (Sony Legacy)
You might like if you enjoy: The Jayhawks, The Kinks
Tell me more: Ray Davies has long been rightly recognized as having a creative voice able to fully capture the English experience. But on the aptly-titled Americana, the long-time Kinks frontman has masterfully tapped into the American landscape to create a number of lovely songs that chronicle tales set on this side of The Pond. Backed by one of America's best and most enduring Americana groups, The Jayhawks, Davies' 15-track disc is a mix of his memorable songs and intelligent arrangements. It are the big and little things that work across the album; on "The Deal" there is the straightforward satire-laced tale of scoring success in the entertainment industry but the use of spoken word and lush musical textures makes sure the song works on multiple fronts. Everywhere there are eloquent forays, with the beautifully sparse "Message From The Road" (featuring Davies sharing lead vocals with Jayhawks singer-keyboardist Karen Grotberg), the bluesy politically-charged "Change For Change," infectious roots rocker "The Great Highway" and probing "Wings Of Fantasy" among the diverse songs that tackle the American experience with artistic candor. Information: LegacyRecordings.com.

Artist: Ride
Title: Weather Diaries (Wichita Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: The Smiths, Blur, Oasis
Tell me more: Weather Diaries is Ride's first new album in 21 years and the great news is the album is every bit as great as the English quartet's remarkable return witnessed at Coachella in April 2015. The group's original lineup (guitarist-singer Andy Bell, lead singer-guitarist Mark Gardener, drummer Laurence "Los" Colbert and bassist Steve Queralt) is back together for Weather Diaries, which kicks off with the haunting and hypnotic rocker "Lannoy Point." That powerful musical statement is no fluke; every cut on the album thrives on the power of mood, clever song craft, and skilled musicianship. The electronica-styled "All I Want," lush "Home Is A Feeling," sweeping and swirling "Cali," and zestful "Lateral Alice" are among the terrific tracks on this welcome return. Glen Campbell's unforgettable albums "Gentle On My Mind," "Wichita Lineman" and "Galveston" to be reissued on Vinyl

Glen Campbell fans who love vinyl will love this news...

Gentle on My Mind, Wichita Lineman and Galveston, the star-making albums that helped make Glen Campbell a global superstar and household name, will be reissued on vinyl on March 24, 2017 via Capitol Nashville/UMe. The three titles, which haven't been available on vinyl for decades, will be released on standard black vinyl and housed in replicas of the original sleeve art. Each album will also receive a limited edition color run that will be available exclusively at GlenCampbell.com at a later date.

Gentle on My Mind, released in 1967 on Capitol Records, was Campbell's breakthrough album. It was the first to go to No. 1 on the country music charts and reach the platinum sales mark of one million albums sold. At its heart was the single, "Gentle on My Mind," a cover of John Hartford's original that so enchanted Campbell, he called in some of his buddies from his legendary studio band, The Wrecking Crew (which included Leon Russell), and recorded it himself to submit to his producer Al De Lory. His first major hit, the song earned him his first two Grammy Awards and made the Arkansas native a rising star. Gentle on My Mind can be pre-ordered here https://UMe.lnk.to/GlenCampbellGentleAmzPR and  streamed here: https://ume.lnk.to/GlenCampbellGentlePR
Released as Campbell was becoming a television star, film actor and crossover sensation, Wichita Lineman remains Campbell's best-selling album. The double-platinum release reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and stayed there for a month (bracketed by Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and only unseated by The Beatles (The White Album). Wichita Lineman stayed atop the country music charts for 20 weeks and was the year's top release in the genre. Centerpiece single, "Wichita Lineman," written by Campbell's songwriting soulmate Jimmy Webb, was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy Awards and Single of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. In 2000, the title track – one of Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" – was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Wichita Lineman can be pre-ordered here https://ume.lnk.to/GlenCampbellWichitaAmzPR and streamed here: https://ume.lnk.to/GlenCampbellWichitaPR
Campbell teamed up with Webb again for two hits on his next album, Galveston, released in 1969. The title track returned to No. 1 and was a crossover hit. The duo logged another minor hit with the follow up single, "Where's the Playground Susie." Campbell's last platinum-selling album of his late-1960s run arrived as he began to host his own television variety show, "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour," and became a household name in the U.S. Galveston can be pre-ordered here https://ume.lnk.to/GlenCampbellGalvestonAmzPR and streamed here: https://ume.lnk.to/GlenCampbellGalvestonPR
Taken together, Gentle on My Mind, Wichita Lineman and Galveston capture the Country Music and Musicians Halls of Fame member at the height of his powers. A country superstar, a member of The Beach Boys with his fingerprints on music history, one of pop's greatest guitar players – all his personas can be found on this amazing run of albums.

Sights and Sounds: ZZ Top, The Beatles, 10th Annual ACM Honors, Charlie Rich

Here is a pretty lengthy roundup to catch everyone up on a number of exciting new releases and events set to land soon...

'ZZ TOP LIVE - GREATEST HITS FROM AROUND THE WORLD'

New collection to be released tomorrow (Friday, September 9, 2016)

For the very first time in more than 46 years, ZZ Top is releasing a full-length live album.  Live - Greatest Hits From Around The World, the new release is exactly as its title suggests: a collection of the band’s best known repertoire recorded at venues on three continents.  The album, available on CD, as a 2 LP vinyl set and digitally, is set for release on Friday, September 9 from Suretone Records through ADA, the independent music and film distribution arm of Warner Music Group. Recorded over the course of several tours in cities ranging from New York to Berlin to São Paolo, the album picks the greatest moments and biggest hits from ZZ Top’s illustrious catalog, captured with all the phenomenal energy and exuberance of their legendary live shows.  The band is, in fact, now on tour in North America, having recently returned from their latest run of dates in Europe.  ZZ Top has a number of upcoming tour dates set, including an appearance at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Oct. 6, and at Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage on Oct. 8.

Greatest Hits From Around The World covers everything from their breakthrough hit "La Grange,” and “Tush” through their huge crossover hits – "Gimme All Your Lovin’,” "Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs" – and then to the present day.  In point of fact, the album includes a recent London collaboration with Jeff Beck on the Tennessee Ernie Ford / Merle Travis standard "Sixteen Tons,” the first time that the song has been included on any ZZ Top album release.
Billy F Gibbons, the band’s resident guitar god, calls the collection  “the true document of life de la ZZ.  In an abstract surrealism style, this collection is a definitive chronicle of the band hangin' together for four plus deluxe decades, getting down to do what we get to do. Enjoy and listen to loudness!”

ZZ Top’s live performances have long been the subject of critical laudation. The New York Times suggested, “If you are the kind of person who likes to use a suspect and imprecise and maybe impossible term about music, then go ahead, because this was, more or less, a perfect concert.”  The Guardian (UK) noted, “The band sound both timely and timeless… It’s an unexpectedly wonderful return from an undervalued band.”

The album will be on released on CD, gatefold LP*, and digitally through all streaming and download stores.

Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard formed ZZ Top in Houston late in 1969. Their third album, 1973’s Tres Hombres, catapulted them to national attention with the hit "La Grange,”  which is still one of the band’s signature songs today. The band’s momentum and success built during its first decade, culminating in the legendary World Wide Texas Tour, a production that included a longhorn steer, a buffalo, buzzards, rattlesnakes and a Texas-shaped stage.
1983’s Eliminator album mixed their fiery blues roots with tech-age trappings that soon found a visual outlet with the nascent MTV. The trio became music video icons throughout the album’s three smash singles, "Gimme All Your Lovin’,” "Sharp Dressed Man" and “Legs." The melding of grungy guitar-based blues with synth-pop was seamless and continued with the follow-up album Afterburner as they continued their chart juggernaut.
ZZ Top had accomplished the impossible; they had moved with the times while simultaneously bucking ephemeral trends that crossed their path. They had become more popular and more iconic without ever having to be flavour of the week. They had become a certified rock institution, contemporary in every way, yet still completely connected to the founding fathers of the genre.
Along the way, they performed in front of millions of fans through North America on numerous landmark tours as well as overseas where they’ve enthralled audiences from Slovenia to Argentina, from Australia to Sweden, from Russia to Japan and most places in-between. The band’s discography continued to grow throughout, most recently with 2012’s fifteenth studio album La Futura, co-produced by Rick Rubin and Billy Gibbons.

Without a doubt, the Beatles are one of the most iconic bands in rock and roll history. Over the years, much has been said and written about them, and the mythology behind their legendary status inspired director Ron Howard to begin work on The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years, a film that focuses on the Beatles' touring years from 1962 - 1966. Following them from their time as fledglings performing in the Cavern Club all the way through their final, monumental concert in San Francisco's Candlestick Park, The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years gives Fab Four fans a peek behind the scenes, as well as a front row seat to their most memorable shows. The film will premier in theaters on September 15th before being released on the streaming service Hulu on September 17th.
Morrison Hotel Gallery will celebrate the film release with Eight Days A Week: The Beatles in Photographs, an exhibit and sale of images September 12-20, 2016 featuring photographers who worked closely with the Beatles over the touring years. Many of these images are also included in the film. At Morrison Hotel Gallery locations inSoHo and West Hollywood, fans can experience these photographs in person, providing a look at the Beatles in the middle of electric performances in packed arenas to images of them happily goofing off in front of the camera or relaxing at the hotel.

The legendary photographers featured in this exhibit are:
Lynn Goldsmith's multi-award winning work has appeared between the covers of Life, Newsweek, Time, Rolling Stone, Interview and People magazines among others. She has released numerous books and her iconic images have graced hundreds of album covers. Her work has been shown in museums and galleries worldwide. Goldsmith first photographed the Beatles two days after her 16th birthday when they arrived at the Deauville Hotel in Miami on February 13th, 1964, to perform on the Ed Sullivan show.
Curt Gunther first met the Beatles while they were touring in Europe and was invited to accompany them to the US as their official tour photographer. During this time, he traveled with them, lived with them, and was able to document their lives in the glare and frenzy of the spotlights and screams, as well as in candid moments behind the scenes.
Emilio Lari specializes in set photography, which is what led the Italian photographer to work with American director Richard Lester on the set of the Beatles' film Help! He has shot over 140 films.
Terry O'Neill has had his work displayed in galleries throughout the world and has photographed political icons such as presidents and prime ministers, as well as pop culture legends. He photographed the Beatles before their meteoric rise to stardom. O'Neill's work has been featured on movie posters, as well as album covers and fashion plates for top designers.
Ken Regan was born in New York City and used the city as backdrop and subject as he honed his skills as a photojournalist. He shot the Beatles during their very first trip to NYC. Regan's work has appeared in a long list of publications, among them Time, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone and Newsweek.
Rowland Scherman has made photography his life's work for over fifty years. Traveling the world, he was the first photographer for the Peace Corps starting in 1961. He photographed the Beatles on their first US tour in 1964. Over the years, his work has been published in Life, Time, National Geographic and Playboy, among other noteworthy magazines. He received a Grammy Award in 1968 for Best Album Cover for Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits. That same year, he also won the Washington DC Art Director's Award for Photographer of the Year.
Charles Trainor worked in Miami during the 1950's and on through the 1970's. He photographed icons such as John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Muhammad Ali, and the Beatles. His photographs became iconic in and of themselves, and his work has been published in Life and Look, Sports Illustrated and Rolling Stone.
Robert Whitaker happened to meet the Beatles on their 1964 Australian tour when he accompanied one of his journalist friends to an interview with the band's manager, Brian Epstein. The photo he took during that meeting resulted in Epstein offering him the position of staff photographer at NEMS, where he worked with all of the artists. During his time working with the Beatles, Whitaker became extremely close with the band, photographing them onstage, as well as in quiet moments at home.
In addition, this exhibition and sale includes photographs from renowned photographer collector and Beatles photographic archive specialist, Vincent Vigil. Among his incredible collection of Beatles photography are two signed prints from Linda McCartney, which started his immense collection, as well as 30 transparencies from the film, Help! Many modern prints, taken from their original source, now reside in the permanent collection of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. These images have also appeared in several books, magazine articles and exhibits.

Memphis International sets October 14, 2016 release for Charlie Rich Tribute album 'Feel Like Going Home'

JIM LAUDERDALE, SHOOTER JENNINGS, PRESTON SHANNON, WILL KIMBROUGH, KEITH SYKES, CHARLIE RICH, JR,  OTHERS

“I don't mean to take anything away from Elvis or Jerry Lee, but I don't think I ever recorded anybody that was better as a singer, writer, and player than Charlie Rich.” - Sam Phillps

Feel Like Going Home/The Songs of Charlie Rich, the first new album release from Memphis International Records since the imprint’s acquisition by Jeff Phillips, a third generation member of the Memphis music’s storied family, is set for release October 14th.  It’s a 13-track album produced by Michael  Dinallo with Johnny and Jeff Phillips serving as Executive Producers and highlights the eclectic artistry of one of Sam Phillips most significant discoveries as interpreted by a broad spectrum of contemporary performers.   The album will simultaneously be available on CD, LP and digitally.

Participating artists, including Jim Lauderdale, Keith Sykes, Charlie Rich, Jr., Preston Shannon, Shooter Jennings, Will Kimbrough and others recorded at Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis where Charlie Rich originally recorded most of the tracks heard on Feel Like Going Home.  In fact, the same piano that Charlie Rich played on his original recording of “Break Up” is still in the studio and was employed by Charlie Rich, Jr. when he recorded the song for the new collection.

In the late 1950s, Charlie Rich was signed by Sam Phillips. His grandnephew, Jeff Phillips, now helms Memphis International Records.  Sam Phillips’ Sun Records changed the course of music and cultural history with ground breaking artists like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, Little Milton, Harmonica Frank and many others.  It’s worth noting that Charlie Rich recorded for Sam’s Phillips International Records imprint.  Not so coincidentally, the Memphis International logo was inspired by Phillips International’s and was, in fact, sanctioned by Sam Phillips back in 2001.

Producer Michael Dinallo is a veteran musician whose Boston-based band the Radio Kings have a strong following.  As a producer, he’s been involved with releases by Stax veteran Eddie Floyd, bluesman Jerry Portnoy, platinum selling Norwegian pop star William Hut as well as projects with Feel Like Going Home participants Kevin Connolly, Johnny Hoy and Juliet Simmons Dinallo.  He noted of the project, “I’ve wanted to do this for 10 years, ever since I read Peter Guralnick’s Feel Like Going Home and Lost Highway.  I love all the music he wrote about but what he wrote about Charlie Rich really stuck with me.  I went out and bought every Charlie Rich record I could find.  He just grabbed me; it was something very powerful. I was absolutely floored when I first heard the song “Feel Like Going Home.”

After some false starts, Dinallo put the idea on the back burner but it came to the fore with the Phillips’s purchase of Memphis International. “Johnny Phillips had signed me to my first record deal and to do this at Sam Phillips Recording Studio completed the picture,” he noted.  The album’s basic tracks were all cut there by Dinallo and Tim Carroll on guitar, Preston Rumbaugh on bass and drummer Tom Hambridge.

Dinallo’s passion for the project is self-evident:  “You do things for yourself but you do them because you just have to.  Charlie Rich’s music has become so important to me over the years so I wanted to take what he did and bring it out and have people hear it because, as popular as he was, few really know him.  He struck a chord in me to the extent that this just had to happen. I’m a guitarist and he was a piano player but he’s, by far, my favorite musician.  I wanted people to hear the music; I think we made a record that he and Sam Phillips, both great innovators, would be proud of.”

Feel Like Going Home/The Songs of Charlie Rich
Artists and Songs

“Lonely Weekends” / Jim Lauderdale – Released in 1959, this was Rich’s second Phillips International single.  It spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #22 in May of 1960. Over the course of his career, Jim Lauderdale has released 23 albums and has collaborated with scores of artists with his songs having been recorded by such notables as George Strait, Elvis Costello, Blake Shelton, Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill and Patty Loveless.  He has been an enduring presence in the Americana music movement for the past 30 years.

“Caught In The Middle” / The Malpass Brothers – The original version was released in 1961 as the B-side of “Who Will The Next Fool Be.” The Malpass Brothers have toured with the late Don Helms, former steel player for Hank Williams, as well as numerous times with Merle Haggard.  Their most recent album, released last year, was produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson.

“Whirlwind” / Juliet Simmons Dinallo – This was Charlie Rich’s debut single for Phillips International in 1958 and featured on his 1960 debut album for the label, Lonely Weekends With Charlie Rich. Country singer-songwriter Juliet Simmons Dinallo’s debut album with her band Juliet and the Lonesome Romeos is titled No Regrets and was produced by her husband and songwriting partner Michael Dinallo.

“Sittin’ and Thinkin’” / Will Kimbrough – Charlie Rich’s 10th single was released in 1962 on Phillips International, shortly before he was signed to RCA’s Groove Records subsidiary.  Will Kimbrough is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who has produced albums by Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider, Kim Richey and others.  His songs have been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat and Todd Snider, among many others. The Americana Music Association named him 2004 Instrumentalist of the Year.

“Time and Again” / Susan Marshall – The song was recorded in January of 1962 and would later be included on Sun and Bear Family Charlie Rich compilation sets. Susan Marshall has been a background singer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lenny Kravitz, Afghan Whigs, Primal Scream, North Mississippi Allstars, Lucinda Williams and has released three solo albums.

“Break Up” / Charlie Rich, Jr. – The song was written by Charlie Rich but first recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis for Sun in 1958.  The son of Charlie Rich and songwriter Margaret Ann Rich, Charlie Rich, Jr. has been a professional musician, singer-songwriter for the entirety of his professional life.  He represented his late father when he was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.

“Who Will The Next Fool Be” / Holli Mosley – Originally released in 1961, it was Charlie Rich’s 7th single and later covered by Jerry Lee Lewis and blues great Bobby Blue Bland. Alabama native Holli Mosley was the youngest winner of the Mississippi state title of the Colgate Country Showdown, the largest talent search for country artists in the nation. While this track, like the others on the album,  was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Services in Memphis, it was produced by Halley Phillips, granddaughter of Sam Phillips and Rodney Hall, son of FAME Studios founder Rick Hall, and mixed at FAME in Muscle Shoals.

“Rebound” / Shooter Jennings – This was Charlie Rich’s third single, written by the singer with Bill Justis and originally released in 1959.  Singer-songwriter Shooter Jennings has recorded 10 studio albums over the course of the past 10 years and has worked within the outlaw country, southern rock and psychedelic rock genres.  He is the only child of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter.

“Midnight Blues” / Anita Suhanin – Written by Rich and released in 1962, the song was re-recorded several times. Boston-based Anita Suhanin, a Berklee College of Music graduate was formerly with Groovasaurus and is now a solo artist.

“Easy Money” / Preston Shannon – The song is another Charlie Rich original and was the flip side of “Midnight Blues.”  Mississippi-born Preston Shannon a celebrated electric blues and soul singer, guitarist and songwriter who has recorded six solo albums to date.

“Don’t Put No Headstone On My Grave” / Johnny Hoy – Charlie Rich wrote the song which was soon covered by Jerry Lee Lewis and Esther Phillips.  Johnny Hoy & The Bluefish have released three albums on Tone-Cool Records playing Chicago blues with dashes of zydeco, jump/swing, New Orleans funk and rockabilly.

“Everything I Do Is Wrong” / Keith Sykes with Grace Askew – The song was the 1959 B-side to “Lonely Weekends” and something of a novelty.  Keith Sykes is a singer-songwriter who has been at it for more than 40 years.  He has written songs recorded by Rosanne Cash, George Thorogood, John Prine and Jimmy Buffett.  Grace Askew is Memphis born and raised and came to national attention when she performed “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” on The Voice a few years ago.

“Feel Like Going Home” / Kevin Connolly – Is the only song in the collection that is from the later period of Rich’s career. Still, it is very appropriate to the spirit of the album and connects directly to the Peter Guralnick book that so inspired Michael Dinallo.  The author titled his book Feel Like Going Home, after the Muddy Waters song of the same name. Years later, the book inspired Charlie Rich, a friend of Gurlanick’s, to write a song with that same title.  Kevin Connolly is a singer-songwriter who has released ten solo albums, the latest of which is Ice Fishing, released last year.
