The Long Strange Trip continues for one of the world’s most beloved bands. RSD 2018 Ambassadors Run The Jewels are fulfilling their duties by releasing The Stay Gold Collectors Jewel Box, a limited edition metal box set which includes a 12” EP etched with custom Marvel-branded art, an RTJ slipmat, and which provides a fitting place to house your RTJ vinyl collection. More hip-hop, both new school and old, comes to record stores courtesy of Rapsody, J Dilla, Czarface, Rob Base & DJ EZ-Rock, Nas, 9th Wonder and more. David Bowie releases are always a Record Store Day highlight and this year’s list includes four Bowie releases proper, including Parlophone’s three very special limited-edition David Bowie items; Welcome To The Blackout (Live London 1978), Let’s Dance (Demo), and available for the first time commercially, the rare Berlin-era U.S. promo album Bowie Now and a release from Lulu, on which Bowie acts as guest vocalist, instrumentalist and producer on two of his own classic songs. George Thorogood & the Destroyers are releasing a limited-edition 7" single for Record Store Day featuring two new recordings. The A-side features a cover of "Shot Down," originally recorded by legendary garage rockers The Sonics, backed with "Ain't Coming Home Tonight," an all new original penned by longtime Destroyers guitarist Jim Suhler and legendary producer Terry Manning (Al Green, Joe Walsh, Widespread Panic), with Grammy-winning producer Jim Gaines mixing the track. A download card will be included with each purchase.   The 7" single was engineered and produced by Shawn Berman, whose engineering credits range from Ice Cube to Guns N' Roses. Berman has engineered five George Thorogood & the Destroyers albums and Thorogood's 2017 solo release Party Of One. "I wasn't aware of the song 'Shot Down' until my wife turned me onto it," Thorogood said. "Turns out it's a perfect Thorogood song. As for 'Ain't Coming Home Tonight,' Jim Suhler is a genius!  I hope you dig these songs as much as I do." Jazz fans have a lot to be excited about as ORG Music presents An Evening With Ornette Coleman (Part 2), taken from a 1965 concert at Fairfield Hall in Croydon, England.  This album showcases Coleman’s experimentation with contemporary classical forms, features new artwork, and is exclusive to RSD 2018.  Verve is releasing Ella Fitzgerald’s Ella Live at Zardi’s for the first time on opaque pink and opaque blue vinyl.  John Coltrane’s “My Favorite Things” is being released as a 7” single through Atlantic, a replica of the original 7” “My Favorite Things Part I & II”, a hit single for the jazz giant in 1961.  And Thelonious Monk’s 100th birthday is celebrated with Columbia/Legacy’s re-release of Thelonious Monk’s 1964 classic Monk. Syd Barrett, Neil Young and Tom Waits all walk into a bar…no, not really…but they are ALL at a record store in April.  Legacy Recordings presents Pink Floyd’s debut masterpiece, Piper At The Gates of Dawn in MONO Neil Young’s Tonight's The Night Live At The Roxy 1973, a black vinyl double LP of a recording made when Uncle Neil and his band decided to blow off some steam after recording Tonight’s The Night, gets a special RSD 2018 version with a gatefold package and a limited edition photo insert.  Three separate Tom Waits colored vinyl double LPs come together as a special treat from ANTI-. Originally released as part of Waits’ Orphans collection, this music received stunning praise on its initial release (and that’s not JUST because Tom covers two Ramones tracks!) The Motor City gets a shout out from a few titles this year, including Modern Harmonics’ release of two very early 7” singles from the MC5, pressed at Third Man Pressing. Third Man Records co-founder (and Detroit native) Ben Blackwell curates a collection called The Stooges (Detroit Edition). Speaking of Third Man Records, they offer a little Nashville in the mix, with a single from Joshua Hedley, a new country signing who you’ve probably seen leading the band at the iconic Robert’s Western World this past decade or so. Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if Bruce Springsteen, U2 and The Rolling Stones ALL released records on April 21? Well, guess what…they are!  The Boss is stepping away from Broadway to release a Greatest Hits LP on colored vinyl. U2 are releasing a 12” picture disc with two different versions of “Lights of Home.” The Stones are re-issuing their 1967 LP Their Satanic Majesties Request on splatter vinyl exclusive to independent record stores, with original gatefold artwork and restored 3D cover. You know, if you turn it just right, you can see all four Beatles in the 3D artwork. Today’s stars are well represented this year. Taylor Swift has taken over the pop world with several massive releases and Swifties can pick up special record store colored vinyl editions of three of them this April 21. New West Records’ Jason Isbell’s Live At Twist And Shout, is just that: a a six song recording of a performance from his 2007 in-store at Twist & Shout in Denver, Colorado. Mom & Pop Records has two from  Courtney Barnett for RSD 2018: a 12” single with two songs from Courtney’s upcoming LP, and a picture disc edition of The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas. The youth are wild, but the kids are all right, and that may be because of the music they get at record stores on 2018. Records geared towards kids but enjoyed by everyone include Rockabye Baby’s lullaby versions of Beastie Boys songs, a reissue from Brookvale Records of Marlo Thomas’ classic Free To Be You And Me and a Blitzen Trapper record created with toy instruments actually called Kids Album!  Continuing the independent spirit, Kartel is re-releasing the hauntingly beautiful 1995 classic Né La Thiass from Senegalese musician Cheikh Lô.  Post-hardcore favorites Touche Amore are releasing a tenth-year anniversary pressing of their demo 7" released as a one-time 12" with an etched b-side on No Sleep Records. Rare Noise Records is releasing Cuts Up, Cuts Out by the noise supergroup Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, Thurston Moore, and Balazs Pandi. Empire Records brings us the 2001 debut album from the prolific underground rap crew, Living Legends,Almost Famous, available for the first time on vinyl on RSD 2018. Common’s Can I Borrow A Dollar?, his 1992 release that put Chicago on the hip-hop map, is being re-issued as a double LP by Fat Beats and Nature Sounds. Various artist compilations and movies from films are a big part of the mix too. Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales continues its series of Music to Drink Beer To compilations and throws in a little sumthin sumthin by calling this edition Music to Drink Beer And Make Love To! Past & Present are releasing Girls in the Garage Volumes 2 and 3, collections of rare 60s girl group singles prove that long before Patti Smith and Joan Jett, girls were rocking in the garage as hard as the guys. Select-O-Hits brings us Malaco: The Last Soul Company 50 Years of Excellence, an RSD-curated collection of songs on gold vinyl from the 50 years of Malaco, featuring artists like Johnnie Taylor and Bobby Bland, proceeds of which benefit the BMI Foundation. The Official Film of Record Store Day 2018 is The Godfathers of Hardcore, which tells the continuing fascinating story of Agnostic Front. Composer Aaron Drake’s score makes its vinyl debut on Record Store Day 2018. In all, it’s one of the most diverse lists of titles ever to be put together for a Record Store Day celebration and whether you find an armful or a select few that pique your interest, they all play a part in helping us throw our favorite party of the year. We’re gonna leave with something that Reid Robinson of Co-Op Records of Moline passed along to us: “My favorite RSD quote ever was from a few years ago. Dead & Company keep band's legacy alive at Forum show

The Grateful Dead's unique musical odyssey was launched Palo Alto back in 1965 and seemingly came to an end with the death of singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia in August 1995. But don't tell that to the Deadheads who packed the Forum in Inglewood on Wednesday night (Dec. 30, 2015) to check out the aptly-dubbed troupe Dead & Company. The same ensemble wraps up its winter tour at The Forum tonight (New Year's Eve).

Here were founding members Bob Weir (guitar, vocals), Mickey Hart (drums) and Bill Kreutzmann (drums) joined by singer-guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti performing a concert stretching for more than 3-1/2 hours (including a 35-minute intermission) and seemingly thrilling every fan in the house (including basketball legend Bill Walton, moving and cheering on the band where he stood amidst the faithful in front of the stage).

Opening with "Minglewood Blues," a bluesy song showcasing Weir's raspy vocals, Mayer was featured on an early guitar solo with Weir performing an impressive one of his own later. That song, which checked in at eight minutes, likely proved to be an average length on a night where jam-centered sorties often extended beyond the 10-minute mark. Indeed, an 11-minute celebration of the Grateful Dead's "Here Comes Sunshine" featured Mayer's sterling lead vocals while the song featured segments where the dynamics would build and fall, with textured exchanges among the players – particularly when Mayer and Chimenti locked into a lovely passage toward the song's finale blending guitar and piano play.

The entire night seemed to encapsulate the spirit of the original Dead, with blues and bluegrass, country and reggae, funk, jazz and rock all playing a seminal part. 

Among the key highlights of the first set was a cover of the Dead classic "West L.A. Fadeaway" featuring Mayer on lead vocals (with Chimenti adding some rousing work on the organ), and the beautiful "Althea" with Mayer's fretwork particularly expressive. A version of Garcia's "Loser" found Weir and Mayer singing artfully together; the song's wide-ranging journey included an especially strong final chorus and a nuanced finale.

The even more expansive second set found the six musicians stretching on more lengthy jams, including a segment featuring drums and percussion. The highlight for this listener was the Chicago blues-styled "Viola Lee Blues," with Mayer's fiery guitar playing positioned around shining vocal harmonies he delivered with Weir and Chimenti.

Obvious crowd favorites included "Shakedown Street" (with the Allman Brothers-styled dual guitar lead section), the piano-anchored blues ballad "Wharf Rat," buoyant cover of Bobby "Blue" Bland's early '60s nugget "Turn on Your Love Light" and the night-ending acoustic take on the Dead's "Friend of the Devil."

Concert review: Phish fry at the Fabulous Forum

Much was made of a recent trio of high-profile "Fare Thee Well" shows where the surviving core members of the Grateful Dead joined Trey Anastasio of Phish and singer-pianist Bruce Hornsby to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead. But watching Phish perform Saturday night (July 25, 2015) before a near-capacity Forum that clocked in at nearly three hours was to confirm that the late Jerry Garcia's wide-ranging spirit has long thrived in the capable genre-blending hands of the Dead's most noteworthy musical descendants.

Formed back in 1983, the Burlington, Vermont-spawned Phish has long secured its staying power. The enduring line-up of the aforementioned Anastasio (guitars, lead vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, lead and backing vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, backing vocals) and Page McConnell (keyboards, backing vocals) offered up a winning brew of rock, funk, jazz-rock, psychedelia, Celtic, jam rock and folk rock in what often felt like a Dead show (including the ancillary add-ons such as tie dye and '60s-styled attire).

No mere Dead impersonator, Phish-heads were treated to a long night of original material that touched on all periods of the band's two-part run (the group was on hiatus from August 2004 to March 2009) while the hazy skies above the floor were filled with floating beach balls and a parade of thrown glow sticks. A dazzling range of multi-colored lights emanated from above and behind the stage further adding to the experience.

Phish was on fire most of the night, notably with the 10-minute "Down With Disease" that started with heavy bass but soon morphed into an extended sortie allowing for intricate interplay between all four instruments and some sweet three-part vocal harmonies. At one point during his virtuoso-worthy guitar solo, Anastasio began jumping up and down in excitement as the multi-generation crowd cheered.

After the relatively hard-rocking "Down With Disease," Phish shifted sonic gears and performed the lovely "Waiting All Night," a jazz-tinged song that was nuanced throughout.
The first half of the show ended with a dazzling one-two punch of the jam rock-powered title track off the band's latest studio disc (2014's wonderful "Fuego") and subsequent 2002 gem "Walls of the Cave."

The second half of the concert was even more intense, with Phish performing forceful versions of a new song "No Men in No Man's Land" (complete with an expansive psychedelic-minded guitar solo), as well as classics such as the hard-rocking "Carini" (bolstered by a dueling guitar and keyboard solo), funky "Tweezer" and "Slave to the Traffic Light" (a song that somehow blended a myriad of subtle styles during its prolonged run).

The band's 20-minute encore included the crowd favorite "You Enjoy Yourself" complete with the winning live attraction known as "The Rotation Jam" where each member would briefly perform another member's instrument. And, yes, Gordon and Anastasio used the live standout to astound with their ability to complete intricate choreography while jumping on their mini-trampolines.

Orange Gives Campaign Benefiting Little Kids Rock Kicks off Today at SXSW 

Orange Amps Will Donate to the Music Education Charity for Each #OrangeGives Hashtag on Twitter or Instagram March 12-16

(Austin – March 12, 2014) Orange Amplification is getting loud at SXSW 2014 to support music education in schools amidst budget cuts nationwide that are eliminating programs in low-income communities. The renowned amplifier manufacturer – known for its unique tones and distinctive design – is encouraging music fans at SXSW and around the world to join them in bringing free music education and instruments to children in under-served public schools across the U.S.

Orange will donate $1 to Little Kids Rock every time someone posts to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #OrangeGives (limited to one entry per person/social media identity). FOUR NEW DATES ANNOUNCED FOR JERRY GARCIA SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION FEATURING WARREN HAYNES

Round Records Releases Re-mastered, Limited Edition Vinyl Of Garcia, Jerry Garcia's Solo Debut, On Record Store Day, April 19

The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration Featuring Warren Haynes will visit four additional cities this spring: Wallingford, CT, Chicago, IL, Milwaukee, WI and St. Louis, MO. 

This groundbreaking orchestral adventure - curated by the Garcia family - will feature his storied original compositions as well as classic interpretations of timeless standards that were hallmarks of Garcia and the Grateful Dead's shows. GRAMMY®-winning vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule) will lend his soul-soaked, introspective blend of rock, blues, R&B and jazz to Garcia'smasterworks. Haynes brings an intimate knowledge of the material, having performed extensively with The Dead and Phil Lesh & Friends. He will be collaborating with some of the country's most respected symphonies. A limited number of tickets are still available HERE for the previously announced May 13 and 14 dates with The Boston Pops and conductor Keith Lockhart at Symphony Hall in Boston, MA.

In celebration of Record Store Day, Round Records will re-issue Garcia, Jerry Garcia's solo debut, on Saturday, April 19. The white 180-gram vinyl will come inindividually numbered foil-stamped packaging (edition of 1,500) and include a free MP3 download card. The limited edition re-issue features newly re-mastered audio from the original 30ips 1/4" mix master reels.

Garcia was originally released in January 1972 and peaked at No. 35 on theBillboard 200 - the highest charting solo release of Garcia's career.  Garcia provides most of the album's instrumentation himself, performing on acoustic guitar, electric guitar, pedal steel, bass, piano, organ, samples and vocals.  Grateful Dead drummerBill Kreutzmann appears on drums.  The album's songs - six of which became staples in the Grateful Dead repertoire - are credited to Garcia, Kreutzmann and lyricist Robert Hunter.  

Garcia spoke lightly of the album at the time, telling Rolling Stone, "I'm just going on a trip. I have curiosity to see what I can do, and I've a desire to get into sixteen track and go on trips that are too weird for me to want to put anybody else I know through. And also I want to pay for this house."

While Garcia characterized the album as "self-indulgent," AllMusic.com notes, "Time has rendered that assessment utterly false, as Garcia is nothing short of a full-bodied artistic expression from one of rock & roll's most multi-faceted musicians."
