New Music: Van Morrison, Tony Banks, Tinsley Ellis

There is a trio of wonderful new releases from decidedly-different corners of the sonic universe to recommend. A concert film featuring Van Morrison, an orchestral album from legendary Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks and a new studio set from bluesman Tinsley Ellis would make welcome additions to any music lover's library.

Tell me more: The newly-released In Concert features a memorable Van Morrison concert filmed at the BBC Radio Theatre in 2016. The iconic singer is backed by a terrific musical cast of players and singers as he explores a stellar catalog that encompasses a mixture of blues, folk, jazz and classic soul. The 76-minute concert includes a few choice hits (including an animated "Wild Night" and jazzy "Brown Eyed Girl," the latter bolstered by Van the Man's sax playing), but the larger joy of this fast-moving performance is in the choice of deep cuts. The gorgeous "Every Time I See A River" (a newer track from his 2016 LP "Keep Me Singing"), spiritual "Whenever God Shines His Light," yearning ballad "Carrying A Torch" (enhanced by Dana Masters' backing vocals) and the set-ending "In The Garden" are among the winning numbers featured during the inviting show. Tell me more: As a founding member of Genesis, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tony Banks is recognized for his work as a keyboardist and songwriter with that legendary progressive rock group. Fans of Genesis can catch up with Banks via his extraordinary new orchestral album titled 5. The disc's opener "Prelude to a Million Years" is an ambitious piece that draws favorable comparisons with Howard Shore's riveting score of the  "Lord of the Rings" trio of films; however, Bank's piece was actually commissioned for the 70th Cheltenham Music Festival in 2014. The success of that work's world premiere on July 5, 2014 under the baton of conductor Maxime Tortelier with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra was the genesis of 5. The five track album marks Banks' 10th album apart from his work with Genesis, and the emotional weight and beauty of the work here is lavishly delivered by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra and Choir along with conductor Nick Ingman. Produced by long-time collaborator Nick Davis, "5" features an intoxicating blend of symphonic textures and forays. The nuanced "Reveille," aptly-titled "Ebb & Flow," the cinematic "Autumn Sonata" and a reworking of the exhilarating Genesis-era composition "Renaissance" fill out the wonderful 5. The album is set for release on Feb. 23, 2018. Tell me more: Fans of electric blues music – and great guitar playing – should check out Tinsley Ellis' new album Winning Hand. "The Sound of a Broken Man" is the album's first entry, and Ellis' fiery guitar work impresses with every phrase. But that proves to be just the beginning, as the Atlanta native offers up scorching performances that showcase his virtuoso chops and artistic touch where even the most blistering lead solos come in the service of solid songs. The History of Canadian Rock 'n' Roll does a good job of celebrating the far-flung contributions of Canada's music notables, including Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Joni Mitchell, Rush, Alanis Morrissette, Bryan Adams, Leonard Cohen, The Band and dozens more. It's nice to see the author hasn't forgotten to feature some of the nation's under-the-radar heroes including the great singer-songwriter-guitar great Bruce Cockburn and singer-songwriter k.d. lang. I've returned from a short vacation and it's no surprise my inbox was stuffed with news! Here is a quick roundup as it relates to a number of exciting new albums and DVD/Blu-ray releases set for release in the coming months...

Genesis to release official career-spanning documentary 'Sum of the Parts' on January 13, 2015 on Eagle Vision

After more than 300 million album sales, the current rediscovery of the hugely successful and influential Genesis continues with the DVD and Blu-ray release of an official career-spanning documentary Sum of the Parts which will be released on January 13, 2015 on Eagle Vision.

Featuring contributions from key members past and present Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips, as well as a wealth of archive performance footage of the band’s biggest tracks and fan favorites, this first official study of the band’s history commences with their formation at Charterhouse in 1967 and reunites the band for the first time in many years.

Produced by Eagle Rock Film Productions and directed by John Edginton, the film recounts an extraordinary musical story, exploring the band’s song writing as well as emotional highs and lows, alongside previously unseen archive material and rare performance footage from across their entire career.

Sum of the Parts explores the dynamic between the band members that have enabled them to survive numerous line-up changes alongside solo careers outside of the band.

The remarkable story encompasses their visionary influence as the leading lights of progressive rock with landmark albums such as Foxtrot, Selling England By ThePound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway; the huge crossover success of the Eighties and Nineties which saw them hit the upper reaches of the singles charts with era-defining hits such as “Turn It On Again,” “Invisible Touch,” “No Son of Mine,” and “I Can’t Dance”; and through to their 2007 Turn It On Again comeback tour which included a show in front of 500,000 people at Rome’s Circo Massimo.

Sum of the Parts contains the BBC’s Together and Apart documentary, which aired on October 4. It adds more than 30 minutes of previously unseen footage, and represents the perfect DVD and Blu-ray companion to the 3CD anthology R-Kive which was released by Warner Music Group / Rhino on September 30.

“We’re the only band, I think, that have managed the solo thing and the band thing for quite a few years side-by-side, and made it a plus rather than a problem,” says Mike Rutherford. Peter Gabriel concurs: “I think when we got it right we had something that none of us could do on our own. And there were different musical histories merging together in a powerful way.”

The Brand New Heavies to release new studio album on November 24th

London-based Acid Jazz innovators and expert purveyors of funky grooves and incredibly soulful harmonies, The Brand New Heavies are releasing their new studio album Sweet Freaks on Nov. 24, 2014.

The eleven tracks featured on the quartet’s tenth studio album Sweet Freaks is full of the band’s signature irresistible grooves, well thought-out melodies and as much lively energy and enthusiasm as on any of their highly successful early outings. The band’s electrifying new vocalist, Jersey born Dawn Joseph originally debuted on 2013’sForward (sharing vocal duties with the band’s then lead singer N’Dea Davenport). Now as lead vocalist, Joseph has come into her own in a big way, as evidenced on tracks like “In the Name of Love”, “Self Portrait” or “Get On,” which showcase her self-assured, powerful and also immensely versatile voice.

Supertramp co-founder Roger Hodgson readies Fall Tour as "Crime of the Century" celebrates 40th Anniversary

Roger Hodgson, legendary vocalist and singer-songwriter from Supertramp, is heading back to North America for a series of fall dates. Following extensive tours of Europe and Brazil, Hodgson kicks off his North America tour on November 4 in Wabash, Indiana.

Hodgson, one of the most gifted composers and lyricists of our time, co-founded the progressive rock band Supertramp in 1969.  Roger was the driving force behind what fans call the "golden years" of the band that made Supertramp a worldwide phenomenon with album sales in excess of 60 million. He wrote, sang, and arranged the enduring rock standards such as "Breakfast in America," "Give a Little Bit," "Take the Long Way Home," "The Logical Song," "Dreamer," "It's Raining Again," "School," and "Fool's Overture."

Accompanied by a four-piece band, Roger Hodgson continues to perform all his hits he wrote and later recorded with Supertramp plus other classics of his such as "Child of Vision," "Hide in Your Shell," "Sister Moonshine,"  and "Even in the Quietest Moments," plus favorites from his solo albums - "Only Because of You," "Lovers in the Wind," and "In Jeopardy" - many of which can be found on his current CD release, Classics Live.

Uniting generations, Hodgson is transporting baby boomers back to their youth while giving younger concertgoers a taste of why his heartfelt songs have endured. In fact, this year marks the 40th Anniversary of "Crime of the Century," released in September 1974 (see press release below). Hodgson's song, "Dreamer," became Supertramp's first international runaway hit, driving the album to the top of the charts. "School," "Hide in Your Shell," and "If Everyone Was Listening" are also fan favorites from the album that Hodgson wrote and composed and often plays in concert.

ABOUT SUPERTRAMP'S CRIME OF THE CENTURY:

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary since its release in 1974, Crime of the Century features the cream of Rick Davies' and Roger Hodgson's songwriting, and was the first of the many peaks in Supertramp's illustrious career; an album that had everything to prove and tunes that effortlessly straddled the world of pure pop and progressive rock. The significant change that happened with Supertramp on this album was that Hodgson and Davies had each found their strength as songwriters and were writing alone. With the unmistakable blend of the two songwriters – Davies' and Hodgson's work, it married the sweetness of Hodgson's Dreamer -- the band's first big hit single -- with the grit of Davies' similarly beloved Bloody Well Right. In School, Rudy, and the title track, the band – Davies, Hodgson, John Helliwell, Bob Siebenberg, and Dougie Thomson – helped define what would soon be known as Adult Oriented Rock. This was -- and is -- not just an album that showed Supertramp's increased maturity, but a timeless gem marked by the incredible melodies and thoughtful lyrics of Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies.

This 40th Anniversary edition will be released December 9 in the US and contains the classic original album, remastered by Ray Staff at Air Studios, and a second disc features the band’s 1975 Hammersmith Odeon concert, mixed from the original tapes by original on-the-night engineer Ken Scott.  It captures the band on the verge of stardom, showcasing all of Crime, and also previewing tracks from the then-as-yet-unreleased follow-up, Crisis? What Crisis? The LP eventually peaked at Number 4 on the UK charts and saw the band on the US Top 40 for the first time.

Dreamer also became the band's first hit single. "I'm fortunate to have written songs that have become hits without ever trying to write one," Hodgson says. "I've never sat down and said 'OK I'm going to write a hit song.' Inspiration comes in many different ways. Usually it comes when I get out of the way losing myself in the sound of the instrument I am playing – it's almost like being in a meditative state. With Dreamer, the inspiration was born out of excitement and just erupted out of me." Hodgson continues, "Looking back, it was quite serendipitous that as a young songwriter with so many dreams I had my first hit with a song named Dreamer. It was certainly a thrill to hear it being played all over the radio. Creating our reality, I've since realised, often starts with our dreams."

If Everyone Was Listening, another of Hodgson's philosophical musings, reaches back to Shakespeare's As You Like It adage ('All the world's a stage, and all the men are merely players') for allegorical inspiration.

"It's all simply a play," says Hodgson, "The world is the stage for all of us, and the song is more about just becoming aware of what is really real in life. And it's a longing for love in a world that is falling apart." Hodgson added, "To this day it has always been my ambition as an artist to try to make the world a better place through my music ever since The Beatles inspired me by how they made such a difference in the world."

Three Sides Live was filmed in November 1981 on the “Abacab” tour in North America and was originally released on VHS to coincide with the live album of the same name. It has only been released on DVD in the limited edition box set The Movie Box 1981-2007. Originally filmed in 16mm, the footage has now been fully restored and is being reissued as a standalone DVD and Blu-ray for the first time. The show focuses on tracks from the Duke and Abacab albums and the tracks are intercut with behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the band members.

As always with Genesis, the show is visually stunning and it captures the band in their transition from their progressive days in the seventies through to the hugely successful pop/rock act they became from the mid-eighties onwards. The line-up on Three Sides Live features Tony Banks (keyboards, backing vocals); Phil Collins (drums, lead vocals); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass, backing vocals) with Daryl Stuermer (guitar, bass) and Chester Thompson (drums).

LEGENDARY GUITARIST SHUGGIE OTIS TO RELEASE FIRST-EVER LIVE ALBUM LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG SET FOR RELEASE ON OCTOBER 14 FROM LOS ANGELES-BASED CLEOPATRA RECORDS

LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG, the first live album from legendary guitarist Shuggie Otis, will be released by Los Angeles-based independent Cleopatra Records on October 14. Recorded at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, the album features the most complete collection of Otis' extensive songwriting canon, including "Strawberry Letter 23" (one of the most sampled tracks in modern music history), "Inspiration Information," "Sparkle City," "Miss Pretty" and many other classic songs.   For Otis, the album marks the opportunity to capture a live performance on his memorable comeback tour, with an audience he calls, "both peaceful and excited at the same time. It was the first time I ever played at the Music Hall, and the crowd was partially insane! The energy was amazing." In addition, LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG is a recorded testament to his band, which includes his son, Eric on guitar and his brother, Nick on drums (another son, Lucky, is a producer and has also played in his dad's band). "It was a great feeling having my brother and my two sons playing with me in various parts of the globe last year," he said. "They have their own music as well, and I love them, and am also very proud of them. It's special to play with them, and it was really important to me to capture one of our performances on record." A family connection to music is not new to Los Angeles native Shuggie Otis. The son of the legendary Johnny Otis, a pioneer of the LA R&B scene, Shuggie, born in 1953, honed his musical chops performing with his father's bands. He began playing guitar at age 11 and soon appeared in clubs and on recording sessions with Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan and T-Bone Walker.  "Growing up musically in my father's band was a blessing," he says. "I was getting my second set of guitar lessons through having to perform on stage."  Shuggie was "discovered" as a solo artist by noted songwriter, musician and producer Al Kooper, and as a 15-year-old guitar prodigy, played on seven tracks on Kooper's second "Super Session" album, KOOPER SESSION: AL KOOPER WITH SHUGGIE OTIS.  At 16, Shuggie recorded his first official album under his own name, HERE COMES SHUGGIE OTIS, produced by Johnny Otis on Epic Records. Subsequently, Shuggie himself produced his second solo Epic LP, FREEDOM FLIGHT, featuring "Strawberry Letter 23." It was his biggest commercial success. At 21, he produced his seminal album, INSPIRATION INFORMATION, also for Epic, which was released in 1974. UK-based writer Chris Campion ranks the LP alongside such late-'60s/early-'70s breakthroughs by black artists as Love's Forever Changes, the Jimi Hendrix Experience's Axis Bold As Love, Sly & the Family Stone's There's A Riot Going On, and Stevie Wonder's Innervisions.   A "musician's musician," Shuggie is acclaimed and admired by artists such as Raphael Saadiq, QuestLove, Lenny Kravitz, Prince, David Byrne and B.B. King, who upon hearing his debut album called the then-teenage Otis, "his favorite blues guitarist."  According to Shuggie, "this is the biggest compliment that I have EVER received!"  Following the release of INSPIRATION INFORMATION, Otis was approached by Billy Preston to take the place of the departing guitarist Mick Taylor for The Rolling Stones' world tour.   He decided against it, wanting to make his own music and not be a sideman.  Around that time, Quincy Jones produced a version of Shuggie's "Strawberry Letter 23" with the Brothers Johnson, and it became a pop hit that reached #1 on the R&B charts. After that, Shuggie seemingly disappeared, although he never stopped making music. He wrote, played and recorded. That material recorded at his home studio over several years make up the bulk of his "lost" album, WINGS OF LOVE, which Sony/Legacy issued in tandem with the re-release of INSPIRATION INFORMATION in 2013. He and his band played extensively in support of that album release on what he called the Never Ending World Domination Tour, the show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 19, 2013 among the many stops along the way. A DVD of the LIVE IN WILLIAMSBURG concert will be released by Cleopatra Records in the near future, and Shuggie is currently recording new material for a forthcoming studio album.
