100 YEARS OF BLUES
is front-porch, down-home music with Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite trading licks and vocals on 12 rootsy, spirited songs, mixing nine originals with three reimagined classics. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Although Bishop and Musselwhite have known each other since the early 1960s and recorded as guests with John Lee Hooker (and other friends), this is the first time that they ever teamed up to make a full record. According to Musselwhite, “This is us sitting down to play the music that we love and resonating together effortlessly because we’re 'coming from the same place.’” On June 3, 2022, Charlie Musselwhite released his new Alligator Records album, Mississippi Son.

The idea for the album came about in 2017 when the two musicians laid down the original version of the song 100 Years Of Blues for Bishop’s Big Fun Trio album. They realized then that they had a special musical chemistry between them. In 2019, Bishop and Musselwhite played a series of stripped-down shows – along with their mutual friend, pianist/guitarist Bob Welsh – swapping songs and telling stories. The audiences went wild, and Elvin and Charlie had so much fun they knew they had to capture the magic in the studio.

The album was recorded at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studios and Bishop’s Hog Heaven Studios in northern California. It was produced by Andersen and co-produced by Bishop, Musselwhite and Welsh. The laid-back, spontaneous nature of 100 YEARS OF BLUES highlights the heartfelt passion of each performance. Throughout the album, the interplay of guitar, vocals, harmonica and piano is virtually telepathic.

Bishop and Musselwhite have continued touring with their own bands and creating critically acclaimed, award-winning music, so this special performance featuring these two icons of the blues is not to be missed.

Plenty of important news and music to share for a Wednesday...Robert Kinsler

Watch Michael Ubaldini's timely hard-hitting videos

Michael Ubaldini / Photo credit: Jesse Navarro
Singer-songwriter great Michael Ubaldini has released two new videos that seem to tap into the turmoil of the times more strongly than any other music videos I've seen this year, in large part, because of the power of the songs and his straightforward performance of those songs. The videos for Ubaldini's "Badge of Freedom" and "Peace Sign" are embedded below.

Elvin Bishop, Rosanne Cash, Ry Cooder, Angela Davis, Alice Randall, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Thorn, RIAA’s Mitch Glazier and Michele Ballantyne Plus More First-Rate Speakers Added to Programming Lineup at Thriving Roots: A Virtual Community Music Conference

Top Row (L-R): Elvin Bishop, Rosanne Cash, Ry Cooder
Middle Row: Bonnie Raitt, Paul Thorn, Angela Davis
Bottom Row: Mitch Glazier, Michele Ballantyne, Alice Randall
Just one week after announcing its first programming lineup, the Americana Music Association Foundation (AMAF) has revealed a second wave of programming for Thriving Roots: A Virtual Community Music Conference. The three-day online gathering will host an important discussion led by Rosanne Cash on the history of protest music featuring Ry Cooder, revered political activist Angela Davis, Bonnie Raitt and award-winning author Alice Randall. RIAA Chairman/CEO Mitch Glazier and COO Michele Ballantyne will be leading a conversation on the current state of the recording industry. More programming info can be found below. Passes are on sale here.

In just a little over a month, Thriving Roots will invite attendees online for inspiring panel sessions with first-rate speakers as they navigate talks on music, culture and everything in between. For the panel “Love and Vigilance,” Cash herself shares the idea behind it best, saying, “I invited some old friends — Bonnie Raitt and Ry Cooder — and some new friends — Alice Randall and Angela Davis — to play songs and talk with me about the history of protest music, the long, hard journey of Black musicians to achieve justice, and the anger and longing of the present moment.”

Given the ever-evolving nature of the music industry, hearing rare and up-to-date insight from its leading professionals is paramount. During “Record Setting,” join the Recording Industry Association of America's Glazier and Ballantyne for a conversation on the state of the recording industry, current trends and their outlook. Elsewhere, “The Future of Americana” links up Foo Fighters’ Chris Shiflett with industry veterans Leslie Fram (CMT), David Macias (Thirty Tigers), Linda Ryan (Gimme Radio) and Bruce Warren (WXPN / NPR Music’s World CafĂ©) for a forecast into the genre’s future over a decade after The Recording Academy established its “Best Americana Album” category.

Additional new programming includes “Striking a Chord,” which finds GRAMMY® Museum Executive Director Scott Goldman sitting down with this year’s Americana Instrumentalist of the Year Nominees Ellen Angelico, Annie Clements, Brittany Haas, Zachariah Hickman and Rich Hinman as they share stories about their respective career journeys. Attending artists will want to check out “How to Stay Creative When You’re Off the Road,” an inside look at how musicians can maximize their productivity while being grounded in one place, led by Bill Bowker (KRSH) in conversation with roots artists Elvin Bishop and Paul Thorn.

In between panels and after business hours, attendees will also be treated to re-energizing music break segments and immersive special events, rounding out the variety of content found at Thriving Roots. Attendees should tune into Dualtone Music Group’s virtual music break highlighting the breadth of their artist roster and Radio Woodstock's Empire State of Americana, which spotlights five rising stars.

Previously announced Thriving Roots programming includes intimate conversations between Brandi Carlile and Yola; Emmylou Harris and Ken Burns; and Jackson Browne and Mavis Staples. There will also be artist-friendly songwriting workshops and case studies like Mary Gauthier’s "Accessing the Universal in Your Songs: Mercy Now,” Taj Mahal’s “Music Is the Healing Voice” and an artist development breakdown with Black Pumas. Moreover, the Woody Guthrie Center will examine the use of music in political campaigns during “Music as a Rallying Cry,” while “The Anatomy of a Publicity Campaign” groups top PR pros to dissect artist campaigns.

With over 50 panel discussions and more than 40 special events filled with music, Thriving Roots will bring the Americana music community together from across the world for three full days of engaging insight from its top industry professionals and leading artists. Previously announced speakers include Rhiannon Giddens and John Leventhal.

The Thriving Roots platform will launch ahead of the three-day virtual conference at a later date to be announced so attendees can personalize their online presence, customize their own daily schedule and begin networking with other attendees.
The virtual conference agenda will be announced in late August. For the latest updates, please visit americanamusic.org.

Album reviews: Michael Ubaldini, Seth Swirsky, Hank Williams, Alligator Records collection

Upcoming albums from groundbreaking Southern California-based artists Michael Ubaldini and Seth Swirsky, as well as an essential Hank Williams collection and a superb blues compilation from Alligator Records make for some mighty fine listening.

Artist: Michael Ubaldini
Title: Starshaker (Blackwater Records)
You might like if you enjoy: John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones' "Exile on Main Street"
Tell me more: Alt-Americana rocker Michael Ubaldini is set to release an album that is very much of our time even while it is steeped in authentic songcraft that ensures it is a masterwork for the ages. While even gifted songwriters are often content to revisit the same themes over and over again, Ubaldini is able to draw inspiration aplenty from a far-flung assortment of places. His Starshaker is ripe full of timely observations: the biting "Politician Superstar" is likely the sharpest jab ever aimed as modern-day candidates while "Jeanie Lees Phone" takes an equally direct swing at those who see the world exclusively through their smart phone. The affecting Mississippi blues-draped "Ballad of Brian Jones" celebrates the enduring power of the late Rolling Stones guitarist's legacy; authentic country (including some great pedal steel from Gary Brandin) is used to support Ubaldini's infatuation-filled tale of "Tombstone Woman." Artist: Seth Swirsky
Title: Circles and Squares (Grimble Records)
You might like if you enjoy: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, ELO, Brian Wilson
Tell me more: Seth Swirsky is a true power-pop master, able to tap into the best of his influences and create something as contemporary as it is original. His latest album Circles and Squares marks another milestone for the singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (who plays the majority of instruments on the 16-song set). The shimmering "Shine" (which could have been at home on the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds), wistful "Far Away" (tapping into a Jeff Lynne-meets-Paul McCartney vibe), beautiful baroque pop musical proposal "Let's Get Married" and sparse acoustic ballad "The Simplest Way" are among the many fantastic originals on Circles and Squares. If Roger McGuinn and Sir Paul had ever teamed for a song, it might come off as the scintillating "Table." Wonderful stuff start to finish. Information: seth.com.

Artist: Hank Williams
Title: The Complete Mother's Best Collection…Plus! (Time Life)
You might like if you enjoy: Hank Williams, Michael Ubaldini
Tell me more: When Hank Williams died in January 1953, he was only 29. Despite his young age, he left an enduring legacy widely acknowledging him as the first and most formidable country music superstar; he is also one of America's greatest songwriters of the 20th century. Now fans of "the Hillybilly Shakespeare" can dig even deeper into his mastery thanks to one of the most important collections of 2016. Hank Williams: The Complete Mother's Best Collection…Plus! features 15 audio CDs and 1 DVD gather together in a box set. There are 142 performances from Williams' "Mother's Best Flour Radio Shows" recorded in 1951 and the DVD that features behind-the-scenes conversations with Williams' daughter (Jett Williams) and several of Hank Williams' band members (Don Helms and Big Bill Lister). Information: HankWilliams.com.

Buy 'Hank Williams: The Complete Mother's Best Recordings…Plus!' (15CD/1DVD)

Artists: Shemekia Copeland, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Tommy Castro, more
Title: Alligator Records 45th Anniversary Collection (Alligator Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Joe Bonamassa, James Cotton, Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Lee Rocker
Tell me more: It is difficult to single out any of the tracks on the outstanding collection Alligator Records 45th Anniversary Collection. Disc 1 includes memorable tracks from a slew of legends including Shemekia Copeland, Elvin Bishop, Charlie Musselwhite, Koko Taylor and Tommy Castro & the Painkillers. Up-and-comers including guitar great Selwyn Birchwood, Toronzo Cannon, and the amazing Moreland & Arbuckle bring a modern-day energy to the proceedings. Moving on the disc 2, what better way to start than with the amazing tandem of harmonica legend James Cotton and guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa to deliver the hard-charging "Cotton Mouth Man." The slow side of Chicago blues is captured by the great Albert Collins on "If Trouble Was Money." The late Johnny Winter is celebrated via a propulsive slide guitar-powered "Shake Your Moneymaker." And this writer hasn't even mentioned outstanding turns from Lee Rocker, Delbert McClinton, Mavis Staples and Guitar Shorty. There are stellar moments everywhere. Information: alligator.com.

Inbox Update: AC Myles, The Canyon Rays, Danielle Nicole

Good morning, here is the latest news from the area of blues, roots and Americana...

Blues-Rocker Guitarist-Singer AC Myles Releases 'Reconsider Me'!

“AC Myles 'Reconsider Me' promises to provide some of the most memorable moments of 2014!” - Tom Hyslop - RockMrTom

San Jose, CA – Blues-rocker guitarist/singer AC Myles' new studio recording, Reconsider Me, groups songs that outline his musical development and his maturing into one of the more valid guitarist and vocalists in the blues arena. Recorded & produced in San Jose, CA. by Kid Andersen at his own Greaseland Studio, the album combines originals and choice covers to tell the roadworthy story of this well traveled and very talented Californian.

“Perhaps the only soulful thing to come out of Fresno, AC Myles can play the hell out of a guitar, and he's growing as a songwriter” - San Jose Metro Editor Steve Palopoli

With Reconsider Me, Myles very confidently delivers a “beyond amazing” vocal range, as well as his unyielding lead and slide guitar work. The song selections vary from traditional blues to 70's blues-rock overload. With the opening track of the Jimmy Johnson inspired & Fenton Robinson penned “You Don't Know What Love Is”, as well as the amazing vocal workout of the title track, Johnny Adams “Reconsider Me”, Myles proves his traditional stylings are up to snuff both vocally and on guitar. The self-penned tracks “Three Ways to Fall’’ and the tour de force “Livin' a Lie” showcase fierce rock n roll slide guitar and vocal chops, following right in line with Rory Gallagher's “Do You Read Me” and the co-written clever southern rocker “Call 'em All Baby”.

Says Myles, “ 'Reconsider Me' is the culmination of originals with choice covers that reflect the career & growth. The covers are songs of artists that influenced me and is the first step into something uniquely AC Myles. Most I have had the fortunate to work with while sprouting musically in the SF Bay area and developed relationships with over the last 10 years.”

Myles spent his later teens and twenties touring with his own band eventually finding his way to the San Francisco Bay Area, playing sideman to a wide array of acts, most notably blues man Fillmore Slim and modern day soul man John Nemeth. Along the way, with a keen ear and sincere passion, A.C. has become a gifted entertainer and musician. His personal appearances have a 'take no prisoners' approach which; along with a healthy dose of humor, usually gets even the toughest audiences on his side.

In addition, Reconsider Me features tracks by artists Myles has had the opportunity to share stages with in his career, including Elvin Bishop's “Rock my Soul”, Roman Carter's blues gem “Queen Bee”, and the Fillmore Slim funk arrangement of the Fats Domino R&B classic “Blue Monday”. The self-penned “Death Bed Blues”, which has a darker lyrical output and showcases his grasp and retention of blues traditions, while “What Is Love”, a cover of Oakland’s blues/mod/soul kings The Loved Ones, is an ode to the region of California that became adopted home territory for Myles and sprouted his musical growth and career.

Says Myles, “The album was recorded live in two days (sans a few keyboard and vocal overdubs) at Greaseland Studio headed by Kid Andersen in San Jose, CA. Very little was written 'for the album' as opposed to reaching into the vault and pulling from near dormant ideas. It was rewarding to complete them as well as some of our favorite live covers. Once the pre production demos were complete and we worked the kinks out we went in and cut the record.”

In support of Reconsider Me, AC Myles and his band have been touring throughout the summer with record release parties held in his home state of California in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Central California. Also added to AC's official website is some great looking and sounding video of the live band. Festivals and club dates, as well as support to other acts, for 2015 for U.S. & Europe are currently being booked. AC also has begun to write the next untitled album, which should be ready for summer 2015 as well.
