Americana heroes on display via rousing returns

Three new album titles, as well as a wonderful 2019 reissue will be wonderful additions to any music lover's collection.

Artist: The Jayhawks
Title: XOXO (Sham/Thirty Tigers)
You might like if you enjoy: The Jayhawks, The Fallen Stars, Mark Olson
Tell me more: One of Americana's most important and enduring voices, the Jayhawks are back with their newly-issued 11th full-length studio LP XOXO that ranks with the Minneapolis-spawned troupe's most beloved albums. The intoxicating opening track "This Forgotten Town" welcomes listeners with a reflective moodscape, the band's nuanced and detailed approach revealed via a rich pastel of guitars, piano, rhythm section and lush vocal harmonies that build artfully before descending into a comforting quiet. A true democratic effort, all long-time core members (Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg and Tim O’Reagan) share lead vocal and songwriting duties across the album. The range of material reflects the team effort as evidenced by the tuneful power pop-styled rocker "Dogtown Days," Beatlesque "Living in a Bubble," piano-anchored chamber pop ballad "Ruby" and indie rocker "Society Pages" on the first half of the disc. The power of the album's track listing never dims; the country-tinged "Bitter Pill" finds Louris providing a tale about a weary wanderer's endless quest for happiness. The Jayhawks' lyrical portraits are as real and affecting as their music making to be sure; the lovely "Across My Field," ambitious harmonies-anchored rocker "Little Victories" and acoustic romantic lament "Looking Up Your Number" are exquisite. Those who buy the initial pressing of XOXO (on vinyl or audio CD) will be getting the deluxe edition of the LP, which offers three bonus tracks ("Jewel of the Trimbelle," "Then You Walked Away," "Hypocrite's Lament"), all of which add power and purpose to this wonderful return. Information: JayhawksOfficial.com.

Artist: Bobbo Byrnes
Title: SeaGreenNumber5 (My Squirrel Music)
You might like if you enjoy: The Fallen Stars, Wilco
Tell me more: As prolific as he is gifted, singer-songwriter Bobbo Byrnes is back with a new album that comes on the heels of a parade of excellent solo LPs as well as his role with the Fallen Stars and Riddle and the Stars. Byrnes brings the same adventuresome spirit he has explored with the Fallen Stars to his exciting new solo album SeaGreenNumber5. The mix of acoustic folk and Americana soundscapes are used in the service of originals that are poignant and intimate; these are songs that draw in the listener with winning melodies and nuanced lyrics. Byrnes is expert in tapping into traditional influences and making them his own, as evidenced by the exuberant "Queen Of The Party," breezy "When We Ride," spirited skip "Eveline," sparse baroque ballad "Every Sound That Crashes" and Celtic-flavored instrumental "Geo's Jig." The album's energetic spirit is bolstered by the surrounding cast of players including bassist-vocalist Tracy Byrnes, percussionist Matt Froehlich, fiddler Georgiana Hennessy, pedal steel player Jeremy Long and backing vocalists Jen Moraca and Tawny Ellis. Information: BobboByrnes.com.

Artist: Ted Russell Kamp
Title: Down In The Den (PoMo Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Shooter Jennings, Merle Haggard
Tell me more: Set for release on July 24, Ted Russell Kamp's Down In The Den celebrates the artist's signature mix of country, Americana, soul and roots music at every turn. Armed with a rich and articulate baritone voice and his top-tier talents on a slew of instruments, the album kicks off in high gear with the rollicking "Home Sweet Hollywood" (with Shooter Jennings adding dynamic vocals to the track), before he moves into other reaches of his far-flung musical universe with the moody "Have Some Faith," New Orleans-mining "Waste a Little Time With Me" and Hobo Nickel," and authentic country ballad Stick With Me" shining on Side 1 of the disc. On Side 2, standouts include the Southern rocker "The Good Part," Memphis soul offering "Word For Word," reflective "Only Son" and emotive album closer "Take My Song With You." Along the way a who's who of genre talents join Kamp on the 14-song LP; in addition to the aforementioned Jennings, vocalists Gordy Quist, Sarah Gayle Meech, Shane Alexander, Grant Langston and Kirsten Proffit, as well as many more top-tier musicians and singers add to the magical proceedings. REDISCOVERED CLASSIC

Artist: Cindy Lee Berryhill
Title: Straight Outta Marysville (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Cindy Lee Berryhill, Michelle Shocked, Courtney Barnett
Tell me more: When Cindy Lee Berryhill released The Adventurist in 2017, it marked the Southern California-based artist's first new studio album in a decade. That wonderful return served as a strong reminder of Berryhill's groundbreaking anti-folk sound and led Omnivore Recordings to reissue an expanded and remastered version of Berryhill's celebrated 1996 album Straight Outta Marysville. Released in August 2019, the Straight Outta Marysville reissue is filled with literate and introspective songs that are bolstered by smart arrangements, subtle performances and the always-compelling delivery of Berryhill. The Los Angeles native is a joy to listen to across the disc, with her inviting vocals (be they spoken or sung) shining in quiet verses as well as more dynamic choruses (just listen to the infectious "Diane"); all of that compelling delivery coming via truly superb songs. The strength of the disc is uniformly mighty, with this writer's favorites including the energetic opener "High Jump," mandolin-adorned "Riddle Riddle," roots rocker "Jane And John," the dream pop of "Unwritten Love Song," acoustic "Talkin' With A Mineral" and a creative cover of Donovan's 1966 classic "Season Of The Witch." The reissues features the 14 cuts that appeared on the 1996 release along with six previously-unissued bonus tracks; these tracks are a wonderful addition to the cuts that appeared only on the original release. Four far-flung titles worth celebrating

Those looking for musical diversity need not look further than the four far-flung titles celebrated in my latest roundup of new releases.

Artist: John Wesley Harding
Title: Greatest Other People's Hits (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Bruce Springsteen, Fastball, the Minus Five
Tell me more: Singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding delivers in full on his delightful new LP Greatest Other People's Hits, a 17-track disc where he covers a diverse field of cuts while joined by a talented field of players who bring these lively reworkings to life. The Minus Five joins Harding for a shimmering take on Pete Seeger's "Words Words Words"; Fastball helps hit Joseph Egan's "Star" out of the park via bona fide power pop perfection; the wistful "Je Suis Venu Te Dire Que Je M'en Vais" poignant soundscape is further enlightened by Harding's vocal reading in French. Other artfully reworked standouts include a sparse take of Bruce Springsteen's "Jackson Cage," a teaming with the Universal Thump for a joyful run through George Harrison's "Wah Wah," and Americana-styled "Wreck on the Highway," the latter a live performance where the song's writer (the aforementioned Springsteen) contributes vocals and acoustic guitar. Other guests heard across the album include Lou Reed, Kelly Hogan and Rick Moody. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist: Lasers Lasers Birmingham
Title: Warning (Lasers Lasers Birmingham)
You might like if you enjoy: Phosphorescent, George Jones, Gram Parsons
Tell me more: Many of this writer's favorite artists have issued top-tier releases independently sans the support or bigger recording budgets afforded by working with a successful record label. Add to that list Los Angeles-based Lasers Lasers Birmingham whose Warning is an 11-track album that shines with the cosmic country sound of Gram Parsons even while infused with enough 21st century aplomb to make this the artist's own. Lasers Lasers Birmingham – the moniker for singer-songwriter Alex Owen – wrote the songs in a persona, an experience pushed even further after a near-death experience when he was in a car crash in the mountains of Ojai, CA. The real-world focused lyrics often find the lead character losing control in their life; to be sure the music finds singer-guitarist Owen and a collection of contributing musicians (along with noted producer Jason Soda) firmly in control as they unleash a bold brew blending authentic Americana, folk and rock. The lovely pedal steel-adorned title track, country rocker "After Party After Life," confessional acoustic nugget "Lead Me On", breezy "Numbers and Figures" and probing tale "What a Shame" are among the outstanding songs on Warning. Information: https://www.facebook.com/LasersLasersBirmingham/.

Title: New Songs for the 20th Century
Written by: Chris Stamey (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter
Tell me more: Written, arranged and produced by dB's co-founder Chris Stamey, New Songs for the 20th Century is an amazing album. The songs astound, as if lifted out of a time machine; to highlight some songs and note others is almost criminal. Those familiar with the Great American Songbook will likely be enthralled by this rich collection. Backed by the ModRec Orchestra, many great musicians bring Stamey's new songs to life. The beautiful and luxurious "I Don't Believe in Romance" features singer Caitlin Cary and has the magic of a Burt Bacharach classic; the wistful "What is This Music that I Hear?" and "On an Evening Such as This" are both bolstered by singer Kirsten Lambert's affecting vocals. The jazzy "There's Not a Cloud in the Sky" and more contemporary "I Am Yours" are among the memorable tracks on disc one. The jazzy "Beneath the Underdog" (featuring Marshall Crenshaw, Don Dixon and Django Haskins), the beautiful "In Spanish Harlem," and nuanced "Lover, Can You Hear Me?" bring equal power to the second disc. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist: Highest Intention
Title: Universal Light (Highest Intention Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Bob Marley, 311, Andrew Tosh
Tell me more: Lovers of reggae music steeped in undeniable rhythms, strong lead vocals and good vibes will want to get a listen of the debut from San Francisco Bay Area band Highest Intention. Universal Light provides a welcome introduction for the Ben "Down" Lowe-led troupe, adept at offering up a range of songs. The romance-minded "Ocean," aptly-titled "Vibes" (complete with an extended instrumental section), tuneful "Riverside," jubilant "Escape" and horn section-bolstered "Hold Your Own Love" are among the excellent tracks on the disc.  Information: highestintentionband.com.

Sights and Sounds: dada to release new music; GRAMMY MUSEUM® exhibit; Cindy Lee Berryhill to tour

I've been on heavy concert duty (Coachella, The Zombies, Kiefer Sutherland, etc.) and before I immerse myself prepping for the upcoming Doheny Blues Festival, I wanted to catch up and post some notable items here of interest...I am super excited to hear one of my favorite artists of all time, dada, is set to release new music too!

Rock Band dada Readies First New Single in Over a Decade
dadaforever U.S. Tour is Set, as Band Celebrates 25th Anniversary

dada, from left, Joie Calio, Phil Leavitt and Michael Gurley.
Rock band dada has recorded its first new single in over a decade. The track, entitled ‘The Bluebird’, will be released this summer, and coincides with a summer/fall ‘dadaforever’ U.S. tour celebrating the band’s 25th Anniversary.

In the years since their debut album ‘Puzzle’ and its smash single ‘Dizz Knee Land,’ dada -- singer-guitarist Michael Gurley, singer-bassist Joie Calio and drummer Phil Leavitt -- has established itself as a live act to be reckoned with…a trio known for its extraordinary musicianship, ear for atmospheric songwriting, melodic hooks and tight harmonies (delivered via Gurley and Calio’s overlapping vocals). At times described as pop, alternative, progressive or experimental, dada is at its core a kick-ass three-piece rock band, ready to play anywhere, anytime, and to deliver epic shows for its fans.

The trio’s bond with their audience is forged by mutual respect and in an elemental sense of connectedness. Leavitt commented, “We called the tour dadaforever because we wanted our fans to know we still believe and will always be there.”

dada’s new single was recorded during April 2017 at The Waystation in Los Angeles, and was engineered and co-produced by multiple Grammy Award-winner David Way (Pink, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, more). A collector’s edition vinyl 45 pressing will be available, in limited edition and signed by the band, with details to be announced soon.

More about dada: Since the release of dada’s groundbreaking 1992 debut Puzzle, the trio has created an array of songs boasting progressive rock musicianship, dazzling vocal harmonies and melodic power pop layered with inspired psychedelic and experimental rock impulses. Adding to the trio’s groundbreaking line of attack are the marathon-length shows that deliver on the promise that every performance is the only one of its kind.
Two decades after the Los Angeles outfit embarked on its singular journey, singer-guitarist Michael Gurley, singer-bassist Joie Calio and drummer Phil Leavitt are celebrating dada’s 25th anniversary.

“dada is about digging into our roots, examining and celebrating it,”  says Calio.
Puzzle was released on September 8, 1992, and it didn’t take long for the band’s sonic imprint to find an audience. The album’s first single “Dizz Knee Land” found widespread airplay on alternative and mainstream rock outlets cracking the Top 5 on the Modern Rock Single’s chart and pushing the album’s sales to over 1,000,000 worldwide. The band was soon touring around the globe, opening for the celebrated likes of Crowded House, Depeche Mode and Sting.

“People always ask, ‘Do you still talk to each other after all these years?’ So that’s really why I wanted to commemorate it because no matter the size of the career if you can stick together and still have a desire to play music together you have accomplished something” explains Leavitt.

Dada was founded when Gurley and Calio began writing songs and performing as an acoustic duo in the late ‘80s. But from the beginning, their approach was unique amidst the onslaught of ‘90s bands featuring lead singers and mostly generic backing bands.
“Joie and I were both lead singers. But we really found quickly that harmonies were going to be a big strength for us,” recalled Gurley, noting both he and Calio are fans of Simon & Garfunkel’s pioneering harmonies.

Gurley noted that once they recruited Leavitt, they were able to blend the thunderous power of trios such as Cream with the artful harmony-minded songcraft of Simon & Garfunkel.
The success of Puzzle was followed in 1994 by American Highway Flower, featuring the ambitious “Ask the Dust” and astounding “Feet to the Sun,” dada has gone on to create a magnificent discography featuring a half-dozen full-length albums and an EP. The trio has also issued a number of solo efforts and offshoot projects along the way exploring a range of styles including folk, blues, jazz and rock. Gurley and Leavitt were both members of Butterfly Jones while dada was on hiatus in the early ‘00s; Calio has released several solo discs and with X Levitation Cult.  Mike Gurley and the Nightcaps are a popular jazz group in Southern California.

Additionally, Leavitt has stepped out from behind the drum set as lead singer and Calio is playing guitar in 7Horse, a psychedelic blues project that has released 3 albums to date. Bringing a stripped-down approach, 7Horse cuts to the bone and identifies core feelings and phrases in their music. Their latest effort Livin’ In A Bitch of A World was released earlier this year. Their debut album Let The 7Horse Run spawned the hit song Meth Lab Zoso Sticker, which was chosen by Martin Scorsese for his film The Wolf of Wall Street. Since then, it’s had over 1.2 million views, 5.5 million streams and over 100,000 downloads.
Long-time and new fans of dada all have one thing in common; they are passionate about the band and have a deep connection with its three members.

Cindy Lee Berryhill Hits the Road for Summer Tour - New Album The Adventurist Out Now on Omnivore Records

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Cindy Lee Berryhill marks an affecting, intimate, and dazzling return to record-making with The Adventurist, an ambitious song cycle set for release by Omnivore Recordings. To celebrate The Adventurist, Berryhill is embarking on a summer tour throughout the U.S, first w/ David Lindley followed by dates with 1000 Maniacs and before embarking on Roots on the Rails w/Dave Alvin, Jon Langford and others.
Written and recorded over the course of the last five years and funded in part by a Kickstarter campaign, The Adventurist was co-produced by Berryhill with David Schwartz, Sheldon Gomberg, Ben Moore, and Lee Ray. Contributing musicians include singer-songwriter Syd Straw, Probyn Gregory and Nelson Bragg of Brian Wilson’s band, DJ Bonebrake of X, and David J Carpenter of Dead Rock West.
While it eschews biographical detail or a confessional tone, the album was inspired by Berryhill’s life with her late husband Paul Williams. Founder of the first modern American rock magazine Crawdaddy in 1966 and a prolific writer and critic, Williams married Berryhill in 1997. Two years earlier, Williams suffered a traumatic brain injury in a bicycling accident. Following the early onset of dementia in 2004 and deepening medical challenges, he was placed in full-time care in 2009; he died in March 2013.
Berryhill says, “I vowed to write Paul a song cycle. Not songs of sadness or the despair I’d felt, but songs that reflected the love I had for him, and a remembering back to the enormous flood of feelings we’d had on meeting and courting. I wanted to write songs that felt like they’d come from that muse-driven place we feel when we fall in love.
Berryhill began writing the songs that were later recorded for The Adventurist in 2011. From the first sessions for the record with David Schwartz in the summer of 2013, Berryhill harkened back to the sound of her widely admired 1994 release Garage Orchestra, which found the onetime “anti-folk” performer delving into a denser, more orchestrated style. Two players from that record, cellist Renata Bratt and percussionist Randy Hoffman, returned for the new collection.
“In some ways you could say that Garage Orchestra, with its orchestral experiments and themes, is directly related to the new album,” she says. “I would offer that they are bookends — Garage Orchestra signifying the beginning of my time with Paul, and The Adventurist being the end of that time.”
Further recording dates followed with Schwartz in Santa Monica, Moore in San Diego, and Gomberg in Los Angeles’ Silver Lake district. The sessions all drew a degree of inspiration from the unusual instrumentation and arrangements and the live-in-the-studio approach heard on Brian Wilson’s groundbreaking ’60s productions for Pet Sounds and the abortive Smile.
“I guess I want things to be more immediate,” Berryhill says. “I really get that old idea, that way of doing it. Something I learned from Brian is that you can have a lot of instruments, but you don’t have to go big. Phil Spector went big with the Wall of Sound. But you can still be intimate and have 14 instruments going.”
Berryhill views her highly personal new release as a response to the challenges life handed her. “My family would say, ‘When the going gets rough, play music.’ I dove really far and really deep into the playing of music, and let the music carry me away. It was my happy place to go to while I went through my daily chores of caring for my husband and my son. It brought me a lot of joy. And it’s an escape — music is the place I go to. It’s the Enchanted Forest.”

New music: R. Stevie Moore & Jason Falkner, The Shins, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Guy Clark

Potent songwriting is at the heart of four noteworthy new collections released in early March.

Artists: R. Stevie Moore and Jason Falkner
Title: Make It Be (Lost Colony Music & Bar/None Records)
You might like if you enjoy: XTC, Beck, Jellyfish
Tell me more: It is hard to think of a recent collaboration as interesting, eclectic and ambitious as the new Make It Be from indie hero R. Stevie Moore and singer-songwriter/guitarist Jason Falkner. The perfect mix of brilliant original songwriting, experimental spoken word pieces and several beautiful instrumental guitar interludes captivate across the fast-paced 18-track collection that is as accessible as it is groundbreaking. Those who love traditional power pop-styled songs featuring shimmering harmonies will find themselves immersed in the sonics of "Another Day Slips Away," "I Love Us, We Love Me" and "Sincero Amore," as well as the lush "Horror Show." Driving garage rock is given its glory on the art damage rocker "Stamps" while the psychedelic folk song "Play Myself Some Music" and experimental piano-meets-electronica foray "Passed Away Today" are late album highlights. There is also a just-for-fun take on Huey Smith & the Clowns' rollicking 1958 single "Don't You Just Know It." Across the disc, the wide-ranging talents of Moore and Falkner as vocalists and musicians dazzle bright. Information: bar-none.com.

Artist: The Shins
Title: Heartworms (Columbia)
You might like if you enjoy: The Shins, Broken Bells
Tell me more: The Shins are back with their fifth studio album (and first since 2012's outstanding Port of Morrow). The newly-released Heartworms finds singer-songwriter James Mercer and company building on an established sound that is a hybrid of indie rock, dream pop and '80s-styled synth pop. Romantic dreams are celebrated via the electronica Erasure-flavored "Cherry Hearts," while the Shins somehow fuse authentic Americana into their sonic brew via the magical "Mildenhall." The magnificent "Rubber Ballaz" and propulsive "Half A Million" are bolstered by dance floor-worthy rhythms without sacrificing lyrical and melodic elegance. "So Now What" finds Mercer's high-reaching tenor perfectly positioned against a symphonic expanse where he sings of painful new beginnings as a long-term relationship ends. Artist: Cindy Lee Berryhill
Title: The Adventurist (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Kerry Getz, Emmylou Harris, Cindy Lee Berryhill
Tell me more: Cindy Lee Berryhill's welcome return The Adventurist is an amazing listen to be sure. The songs here resonate powerfully, part of a song cycle for Berryhill's late husband Paul Williams whose traumatic brain injury ultimately led to a number of medical challenges including dementia; he died in March 2013. Berryhill began writing the first of the songs that appear on The Adventurist in 2011, and her ability to share the most intimate of emotions is at the heart of The Adventurist. The joys and challenges of deep love and loss are articulated with beauty, a touch of humor and uncommon depth at every turn by Berryhill, whose songs are lavishly enhanced by a talented group of players who add cello, vibraphone, violin, glockenspiel and many more voices across the 14-track journey. The soundscape used by Berryhill to paint her musical portrait runs from indie rock ("American Cinematography") and baroque pop ("Somebody's Angel," "Thanks Again") to dream pop ("Gravity Falls") and indie low-fi rock ("Deep Sea Fishing"). Artist: Guy Clark
Title: The Best of the Dualtone Years (Dualtone Records)

Tell me more: Acclaimed singer-songwriter Guy Clark, who died on May 17, 2016, is celebrated on the essential The Best of the Dualtone Years. The two-disc set is comprised of stellar material from his final three studio albums, his 2011 live set Songs and Stories, along with three previously-unreleased songs offered up as intimate demo recordings. The complete 19-track collection is gold, filled with Clark's insightful and descriptive lyrics sang with a lived-in-the-world baritone. Against a rich musical backdrop as rich and vast as his native Texas, the range of Americana-styled nuggets includes the sumptuous "Rain In Durango," magical musical tale "The Guitar," the ultimate tale of escape ("L.A. Freeway"), and the romance-themed acoustic ballad "My Favorite Picture of You." Information: dualtone.com.
