Tell me more: A special event featuring sets from a number of legendary musicians is reason enough to celebrate, but imagine a once-in-a-generation concert boasting sets from both Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney with the former Beatles then joining forces to perform several Fab Four classics together. Those are among the many reasons to run out and get a copy of Change Begins Within: A Benefit Concert for The David Lynch Foundation. Filmed at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on April 4, 2009, the now-legendary concert also features performances teaming Moby and Bettye LaVette ("Trouble So Hard/Natural Blues"), Eddie Vedder and Ben Harper (an excellent cover of the Queen/David Bowie classic "Under Pressure"), and Sheryl Crow and Harper (George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"). Tell me more: On Oct. 23, 1988, Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens each performed individual sets while cameras rolled as part of PBS' series "Austin City Limits." Now both those performances have been issued as individual releases, with each title providing the performance on audio CD and on DVD. Although Yoakam was a native of Kentucky, from his youth he fell in love with Owens' groundbreaking "Bakersfield" sound (also a favorite of country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons) and fused that with his own bluegrass and authentic country sound. The Live From Austin, TX appearance from Yoakam is an hour-long joyride, with both uptempo favorites ("Guitars, Cadillacs," "Please, Please Baby," the night-ending "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me") and tender ballads ("Home Of The Blues," "I Sang Dixie") among the choice cuts. Yoakam is joined by Owens for a wonderful duet of their number one single "Streets Of Bakersfield," (also featuring the beautiful accordion work of Flaco Jimenez). Tell me more: It was an enthusiastic Yoakam who pulled his musical idol Owens out of a self-imposed 10-year retirement in 1988, leading up to the tandem sets showcased on the newly-issued "Live From Austin TX" releases. Owens' turn is pure fun, with the Sherman, Texas native kicking things off with his 1963 number one hit "Act Naturally" (a favorite of Ringo Starr, who recorded it with the Beatles in 1965). The fast-paced set also includes other beloved Owens nuggets including the lovely ballad "Together Again," his signature Bakerfield romp "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail," rockabilly-styled "Hot Dog" (the title track from his 1988 studio album) and honky tonk gem "Put Another Quarter in the Jukebox." Owens is joined on stage by Yoakam for a duet of "Under Your Spell Again." He caps off his performance with a countrified take on Chuck Berry's rocker "Johnny B. Goode." Tell me more: Catching Alice Cooper deliver a powerful and entertaining concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last month, this writer was anxious to watch the newly-released Welcome To My Nightmare Special Edition DVD, a title featuring both a TV special Alice Cooper: The Nightmare and the Welcome To My Nightmare concert film from the mid-1970s. Both features on the DVD will thrill fans of Cooper. Aired on ABC-TV in the U.S. in April 1975, Alice Cooper: The Nightmare fully developed the concept of Cooper's album Welcome to My Nightmare, with Cooper portraying the child Steven and Vincent Price serving as the Spirit Of The Nightmare. The television special (directed and choreographed by David Winters) is fascinating, with Cooper delivering groundbreaking segments animated by creatively-lit theatrical sets, talented dancers and dynamic glam and shock rock that bring Cooper's nightmare to life. Filmed at London's Wembley Arena in September 1975, Welcome To My Nightmare was shown in movie theaters in 1976. The entertaining concert features seminal tracks from Cooper's early career including rousing versions of "No More Mr. Nice Guy," "The Black Widow," "School's Out" and the affecting ballad "Only Women Bleed." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Reissues revisit essential rock albums, soul singles

This year has seen a burgeoning number of wonderful reissues and deluxe collections celebrating bona fide musical riches. Among the most highly-recommended titles are those celebrating the groundbreaking debut album from Garbage, a trio of singer-songwriter-guitarist Peter Frampton's releases, a reissue of The Sneakers' late '70s EP, and an outstanding collection of '60s and '70s soul rarities.

Tell me more: Listening to classic rock radio in 2015 it might seem that rocker Peter Frampton had only issued a single album (1976's Frampton Comes Alive!). In truth, the British-born artist has enjoyed a rich career stretching back to the 1960s when he was a member of the Herd and later Humble Pie. Frampton's three studio recordings stretching from 1986's Premonition to 2003's Now (sandwiched around 1989's When All The Pieces Fit) have been reissued complete with extensive liner notes that shed additional light on these overlooked discs. The material ranges from melodic pop-rock (including the mainstream hit "Lying" and synth rocker "Stop" from Premonition) to dance rock ("Holding On To You" from "When All the Pieces Fit") and a spirited anthem ("People All Over the World," with Frampton's top-tier vocals showcased). Frampton's guitar playing is always a joy, as evidenced by his remarkable cover of George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and the instrumental original "Greens" (both featured on Now). Tell me more: One of indie rock's earliest American heroes gets a well-deserved second look thanks to Omnivore Recordings' newly-issued Sneakers. The North Carolina-spawned Sneakers (notable for a lineup that included Chris Stamey and Will Rigby who went on to greater fame with the dB's, and Mitch Easter who would lead Let's Active) had a relatively brief run, but the 11-song reissue features bonus tracks and more than enough evidence to see how the band's influence stretched beyond record sales. Blending offbeat lyrics, driving garage rock, sweet vocal harmonies and intricate chord changes, the Sneakers' groundbreaking approach shines on the driving "Ruby," urgent "Condition Red," the tender baroque ballad "Story of a Girl" and a rollicking cover of the Grass Roots' "Let's Live for Today." That may be the best way to describe the vast range of wonderful recordings that grace Groove & Grind: Rare Soul 1963-1973, a collection of more than 100 tracks on a deluxe collection that stretches across four audio discs. From Don Gardner's uptempo "My Baby Likes to Boogie" and the Jelly Beans' lovely "I'm Hip to You" that kick off to disc 1, things never let up. Each of the discs has been grouped into specific categories: one disc looks at urban soul to emanate out of the five R&B capitals (just listen to Betty LaVette's yearning "Almost"), while another disc focuses on vocal harmony groups to emerge in the footsteps of the Tempations. Since its launch almost ten years ago, the David Lynch Foundation – founded by the iconic filmmaker David Lynch – has already provided scholarships to teach Transcendental Meditation to more than 300,000 at-risk youth in underserved schools, veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS), women who are survivors of domestic violence, and homeless and incarcerated individuals.  DLF Live’s mission is to create incredible, one-night-only experiences with some of the biggest, most lauded creatives of our time, to help raise money to bring evidence-based, stress-reducing meditation to these one million at-risk adults and youth across the globe.

Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr's David Lynch Foundation Benefit, Airing on THIRTEEN on Sunday, April 29, 2012


Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited on an American stage for the first time in 17 years during this historic April 2009 Radio City Music Hall benefit concert, which will be broadcast in New York on THIRTEEN on Sunday, April 29, at 10:30 pm (check local listings for broadcast dates and times in your area).

The Beatle reunion highlights the 90-minute "Change Begins Within" concert to benefit the David Lynch Foundation, a charity set up in 2005 by the iconic filmmaker David Lynch to fund Transcendental Meditation programs for at-risk youth, veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, and women who suffer from domestic abuse and violence.

McCartney performs a set of Beatles, Wings and solo classics; Starr sings his own set of Beatle and solo hits. McCartney and Starr join together on stage for "With A Little Help from My Friends," Paul’s rarely performed "Cosmically Conscious,” and Beatle fan favorite "I Saw Her Standing There.”

Also appearing on the broadcast are comedian Jerry Seinfeld as well as musicians Sheryl Crow (“My Sweet Lord”), Eddie Vedder and Ben Harper (“Under Pressure”), Moby and Betty LaVette (“Natural Blues”), Paul Horn, newly-elected Rock-and-Roll-Hall of Famer Donovan and Jim James (“Hurdy Gurdy Man”).

On June 19, Clean Slate/Epic Records will release Fiona Apple's first album in seven years.The GRAMMY®-winning artist will launch a summer headline tour that evening at the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY. The run, which will include performances at The Governors Ball Music Festival on New York City's Randall's Island (June 24) and Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium (July 13), will conclude at the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, CA on July 29.

Like Apple's 1999 record, When the Pawn..., the new album's title is a poem:
