Record Store Day Roundup: Michael Ubaldini, Laurence Juber, The Shelters, The Zombies, Rush, David Bowie, The Cars, The Doors, much more!

The 10th anniversary of Records Store Day is coming Saturday, April 22, 2017. Here is an exhaustive roundup of some of the most noteworthy special releases set to be issued as part of the event. Please note, special releases include 7-inch vinyl singles, as well as full-length vinyl and audio CD titles! It's important to note that Record Store Day often comes to discovering and supporting the brick-and-mortar local near you. Take Pepperland Music, located in Orange, CA (and not far from me), where area rocker Michael Ubaldini will be celebrating the release of his exclusive vinyl release "The Ballad of Brian Jones" with an in-store performance at 9 a.m. on April 22. Later that day, Laurence Juber (of Paul McCartney & Wings fame) will perform instrumentals from his newly-issued album LJ Can't Stop Playing the Beatles! at noon. Pepperland Music is located at 850 N. Tustin Street, Orange, CA 92867.

Coming off an impressive SXSW, Los Angeles based rock band The Shelters —who were ranked as one of Bandsintown’s “Breakout Artists” at SXSW — have confirmed the release of a special edition 7” on Record Store DayApril 22

The release is limited to only 3,000 copies and features two of The Shelters’ favorite cover songs: “Really Wanted You” which was written and originally performed by Emitt Rhodes and “So Get Out" by Ronald Lee Wilson and Jim Pash, originally performed by The Surfaris. These songs are often included in the band’s live concert performances but the band will not have released studio versions until Record Store Day. The Shelters’ self-titled debut album — out now via Warner Bros. Records — was co-produced by one of the band’s musical heroes, Tom Petty, with all songs written by band members Chase Simpson (vocals, guitar) and Josh Jove (vocals, guitar).
The Shelters are Simpson, Jove, Sebastian Harris (drums) and Jacob Pillot(bass). Information: TheSheltersMusic.com.

Released in 1977, A Farewell To Kings is the studio follow-up to 2112 and is a continuation of Rush’s musical growth, as they continued to push traditional rock boundaries and explore new ground, both musically and lyrically. Recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, A Farewell To Kings was the band’s first U.S gold-selling album, receiving the certification within two months of its release, and was later certified platinum. Elton John is commemorated as the first ever worldwide Record Store Day legend and will release his live album 17.11.70+ on April 22, 2017, the 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day.

The legendary album is being released on vinyl in newly expanded form with six previously-unreleased tracks. This format is a 2 LP set on 180GM Vinyl, remastered by Bob Ludwig.

‘The album 17-11-70 was not meant to be a live one at all; we did one of the first-ever stereo radio broadcasts live at A&R Recording Studios in New York City in 1970 on the 17th of November. It was Phil Ramone’s studio, one of the greatest producers of all time, and we just went in the booth and played it as a three-piece: Nigel Olsson on drums and vocals, Dee Murray on bass and vocals, and myself. There was a studio audience of about 100 sitting outside the booth, hearing it coming through the loud speakers, and we just played. I’m astonished by how good we were, listening to this record. A lot of it was improvised, and you can do that when you’re a three-piece band because I’m really the lead instrument, and Dee and Nigel were so brilliant at following what I did. There’s a 16-minute track on it that was completely improvised, more or less, and I’m very proud of it: I think it’s one of the greatest live albums ever made. It wasn’t initially coming out as a live album, but there were so many bootlegs in those days that the record company put it out. I’m glad they did because it really is something I’m very, very proud of’. Elton John
