Record Store Day Roundup: Andrew McMahon, Varèse Sarabande, Warner Bros. Records, alt-J, more!

Coachella isn't the only music event happening this weekend; Record Store Day arrives on Saturday, April 16, 2016, and there is plenty of news on the music-minded affair to share. Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 as a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding approximately 1,400 independently-owned record stores in the U.S., and thousands of similar stores around the world. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica...

JOHN WICK – Featuring Previously Unavailable Marilyn Manson Track
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON – Designed To Replicate The Dragon’s Eye
and DARK SHADOWS In Honor Of The Show’s 50th Anniversary!

Varèse Sarabande announces three soundtrack album releases for Record Store Day on April 16, 2016:  JOHN WICK featuring original music by Tyler Bates with the Marilyn Manson track “Killing Strangers”; HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, the beloved animated film featuring music from John Powell; and the classic television series DARK SHADOWS with music by Bob Corbet.  The label will also be releasing Moody Blues #1 from the Moody Blues and Good Friday by The Easybeats on their Varèse Vintage label.

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, How to Train Your Dragon tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.  On vinyl for the first time the album includes the track "Sticks and Stones" from Jonsi (of Sigur Ros).  This limited edition, numbered release of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is made to emulate a Dragon's Eye.

On the 50th anniversary of the original release of the Dark Shadows television series, this Billboard top 20 album from 1969 features over a dozen of the show’s popular musical selections, including “Shadows of the Night (Quentin’s Theme),” and “Dark Shadows Theme”.  This re-release comes with the original poster from the 1969 album, and will also be presented on spooky limited edition purple vinyl.

Co-produced by Gardner and Jack Dragonetti (The Submarines, Jack Drag), Adventures is a stellar showcase for the 19-year-old Illinois native's brisk hooks, high-spirited melodies, and a musical eclecticism that reflects his deep love for his pop-rock predecessors, including The Beatles, Ben Folds, and Vampire Weekend. Gardner first began to attract attention with the album's opening track "Let's Get Started" when he put it up on Spotify last year. After being included on a popular playlist called "Smart Is The New Sexy," the track caught fire and began racking up plays. (It is now over seven million.) Watch the official video here.
