In this column, I feature a handful of outstanding releases released in the first four months of 2022, including a mix of new studio titles and reissues.

Artist: Seth Swirsky

Title: Songs From The Green Couch (Lolipop Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Beatles, the Monkees, Badfinger, Julian Lennon

Tell me more: Singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Seth Swirsky is back with another batch of indispensable ear candy courtesy of his self-produced Songs From The Green Couch, a 15-track disc that is as ambitious as it is listenable. Take the opener; "Sunny Day" opens with a chamber pop section before burgeoning into a Beatlesque celebration. The instantly-inviting "I Don't Wanna Lose You" is pure power pop and executed with absolute perfection. Standouts abound on this terrific release; the beautiful Baroque-mining "Cashmere Sweaters," the frightful "Dead," irresistible "Making It Up As We Go Along," shimmering "Rose Avenue" (the latter bolstered by some sharp guitar work from Kirk Hellie) and luxurious closer "American Bar" are among this writer's other favorites on the masterwork. "The record was a two year process," Swirsky says in the press notes for the album. "I started writing and recording the record at the beginning of a serious new relationship I was having — it continued during a very painful breakup. Thus, the album oscillates between many hi’s and lo’s for me personally, which are reflected in the lyrics." If you love melodic and smart songcraft, get a copy of "Songs from the Green Couch." Information: RealSeth.com.

Title: In Cinerama (Omnivore Recordings)

You might like if you enjoy: She & Him, Belle and Sebastian, Susanna Hoffs' 2012 album "Someday," French pop music

Tell me more: April March's In Cinerama was originally release as a limited edition vinyl-only release for Record Store Day in 2021. Thankfully, Omnivore Recordings has given this marvelous album a wider release in 2022. Singer April March (whose career in the entertainment industry has included music making with greats such as Brian Wilson and Jack White as well as being an animator on "Pee Wee's Playhouse") mines the retro stylings of classic French pop, the 5th Dimension, Belle and Sebastian and Burt Bacharach to come up with something that is magically her own. The uptempo and bouncy "Life Off," lush "Rolla Rolla," romantic genre-bending "Open Your Window Romeo," bewitching "Ride Or Divide," bouncy Runaway" and sweeping "Baby" are among the delights on the 13-track album. The audio CD version of In Cinerama reviewed here includes updated artwork, new liner notes (both in English and en Francais), printed lyrics as well as two previously-unissued bonus tracks (the wonderful "Goodbye" and "Friends Peculiar"). Title: Gather Round (Upright Records)

You might like if you enjoy: The Stray Cats, Carl Perkins

Tell me more: Both as a member of the Stray Cats and his subsequent celebrated solo work, Lee Rocker has done as much as anyone to keep rockabilly music alive. Armed with his signature baritone vocals and amazing talents on a slew of instruments (double upright bass, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, accordion), Rocker conjures up the magic of rock and roll's rousing beginnings across his latest album Gather Round. The fiery disc opener "Gather Round" recalls the magic he created as a member of the Stray Cats, the track bolstered throughout by Buzz Campbell's virtuoso lead guitar flash and Matt Jordan's piano work. The romantic "The Last Offline Lovers" is beautiful and showcases Rocker's emotive vocals. The album's strength spans its 10-track run, with the sly "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat," propulsive "Pickin and Grinning" rockabilly romp, tuneful "Every Time I See You," roaring "When Nothing's Going Right" and reworked take on Robbie Robertson's "Ophelia" adding to the collective magic. Information: LeeRocker.com.

Title: Amoeba Teen (Big Stir Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Jellyfish, The Lickerish Quartet, Blur, Teenage Fanclub

Tell me more: Stourbridge, England-based Amoeba Teen's self-titled debut blasts out of the speakers with the raw approach of a concert recording (no surprise since the media release notes the foursome recorded the album live at Claptrap Studios in Stourbridge). Indeed, singer-guitarists Mark Britton and Mike Turner, drummer Carl Bayliss and bassist Simon Muttitt deliver 10 potent songs enhanced by an effective mix of garage rock, '70s glam, power pop, folk and Britpop. The quartet's winning approach shines on the melodic "Just Not That Into You," lush "New Material World," tender "A Good Reason Why," the countrified gem "January" and sumptuous "Melody Told You." Other standouts include the driving "Monica Wake Up," literate "Putting the Kids Through College" and full-blooded indie rocker "King of the Cut." Information: BigStirRecords.com.

Title: Forever On My Mind (Easy Eye Sound)

You might like if you enjoy: Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Robert Johnson, Delta blues 

Tell me more: The story of blues great Son House is truly the stuff of legend. Born in Lyon, Mississippi in 1902, Son House was featured on several commercial 78s in 1930 and two field recordings captured by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress at the dawn of the 1940s before returning to relative obscurity for more than two decades. That changed in 1964 when he was rediscovered at the age of 62 working at a train station in Rochester, New York; he subsequently returned to music and toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and was even chronicled in a story in Newsweek magazine. Fast forward to 2022 and producer Dan Auerbach (the Black Keys) has issued a stunning new edition celebrating the legendary "Father Of The Delta Blues." The remastered eight tracks on Forever On My Mind were tracked in the 1960s after Son House's reintroduction to the world (Son House passed away at the age of 86 in 1988). They offer a true glimpse into the early sounds of the Delta blues. The artist's freewheeling vocals and guitar playing are spirited and there is an otherworldly quality to the selections. The Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza, the largest and longest-running music festival in Mammoth Lakes, CA, is proud to announce its line-up for the 26th Annual Event, set to take place Thursday-Sunday, Aug. 4-7, 2022.

Weekend 2 of Coachella 2022 (April 22-24, 2022) offered up so many great performances, it's impossible so soon after the event to proclaim any single performance — or even any day — the best of the event. 

One thing that is clear is how this year's running of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival clearly thrust women into the limelight. In addition to Billie Eilish's incredible headlining set on the Coachella Stage on Saturday night, the parade of top-tier women extended from early-in-the-day emerging acts such as Holly Humberstone, Nilüfer Yanya, The Regrettes, Yola and Giselle Woo & the Night Owls to bona fide favorites Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, The Marias, Beach Bunny and Maggie Rogers. Weekend 2 Coachellagoers even got Paramore lead singer Hayley Williams as a guest during Eilish's turn.

The HU — Mongolian hard rock outfit The HU lived up to their well-deserved buzz with a 40-minute set of electrifying cuts that fused head banging rhythms wrapped in in guttural singing and propelled by undeniable grooves. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, The HU is unlike any group this writer has ever seen and the use of instruments from their native land like the Morin Khuur (horse head fiddle), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumar Khuur (jaw harp) and strong presence made for an unforgettable outing on the Outdoor Theatre Stage. "Wolf Totem" was among the otherworldly tracks the band performed with absolute perfection.

Phoebe Bridgers — Standing out on a three-day bill featuring more than 150 artists isn't easy, but Los Angeles singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers did that with her bewitching hour-long set Friday night. Launching her showcase with the lovely "Motion Sickness," Bridgers performed a set that showcased her amazing songcraft and ability to use her musical talents — and those of her amazing band members — to create a soundscape that is fully her own. It didn't hurt that the video projection screen would feature a colorful animated book that would flip pages between the songs and twinkling night sky adding additional atmospheric magic to the setting. Her nuanced and artful performance reached a dramatic close with the explosive finale of "I Know The End."

Other Friday highlights included area favorites Giselle Woo & the Night Owls, English rockers Spiritualized, the soul-meets-pop New York-based Lawrence (featuring siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence), rising Los Angeles band The Marias, French singer-DJ Madeon and headliner Harry Styles — the latter who was joined by Lizzo for a version of "I Will Survive."

Beach Bunny - an early Saturday standout, the Lili Trifilio-led Chicago outfit Beach Bunny offered up a winning mix of melodic punk and power pop on the Outdoor Theatre Stage on Saturday afternoon. Although the quartet was reduced to a trio (the band's guitarist Matt Henkels was not in the lineup for some reason), the group's second-ever appearance at Coachellafest was a success with Trifilio handling all the guitar duties with enough power to help propel their great 45-minute set.

Japanese Breakfast — The moniker for singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Michelle Zauner, Japanese Breakfast was clearly a wonderful discovery for many at the festival. Japanese Breakfast delivered a fully original and joyful set inside a packed Mojave Tent on Saturday afternoon. The diversity of the material included the lovely "Glider" (written for a video game), melodic sortie "Savage Good Boys" and set-ending experimental art rocker "Diving Woman." The yearning "The Body Is a Blade" from her latest album "Jubilee" was one of the most affecting songs this writer heard during the fest.

Danny Elfman — On Oct. 31, 1995, Danny Elfman said goodbye to his beloved Oingo Boingo via a 3-hour, 40-minute finale at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles (read my review of that legendary concert HERE). With that well-publicized finale, Elfman dove full time into his burgeoning career as a composer and has since written a slew of acclaimed film scores. Fast forward 27 years to Elfman's appearances at Coachella 2022 and the artist has truly come full circle. On Saturday night, Elfman and an amazing band along with an orchestra and choir performed a handful of Boingo classics as well as selections from some of his most beloved film scores along with new material from his 2021 solo album "Big Mess." This was a dazzling and satisfying run through Elfman's singularly rich sonic universe. Standouts included an amped take on the "Simpsons" theme, a medley of songs from "The Nightmare Before Christmas," and gorgeous symphonic run through "Ice Dance / The Grand Finale" (from "Edward Scissorhands"); it was marvelous to hear Elfman and company run through inspired versions of Boingo classics like "Just Another Day," "Only a Lad" and "Dead Man's Party." The new material was compelling too, especially the decidedly dark "Happy."

Billie Eilish — Although Weekend 2 attendees didn't get the celebrated Damon Albarn (who appeared at Weekend 1) as a guest during the "Bad Guy" singer's highly anticipated set on Saturday night, they did get to enjoy a guest making her first-ever appearance at the famed festival. "Oh, look! An empty seat. Who is that for?" Eilish asked. She then introduced Paramore's Hayley Williams; they joined forces along with Eilish's brother FINNEAS (the latter who handled acoustic guitar duties) for a powerful take on Paramore's 2007 rocker "Misery Business." Make no mistake; 20-year-old Eilish is already a bona fide star. In addition to her unique vocal and musical style, she is a compelling songstress more focused on nuanced songcraft than glitzy bombast. Sure, her set included dance-minded cuts like "NDA" and "My Strange Addiction," but the gorgeous "idontwannabeyouanymore," "Lovely" and "Getting Older" revealed a greater force at play than the majority of her contemporary hitmakers. 

Other Saturday highlights included rising British rock quartet Yard Act, Disclosure and wonderful R&B singer Amber Mark.

FINNEAS — FINNEAS repeated the power of his previous week's solo set with his appearance on the final day of Coachella. Standouts of his 45-minute set on the Outdoor Theatre stage included the soulful piano-anchored "I Lost a Friend," R&B-meets-rock foray "The 90s" and heart-wrenching "Break My Heart Again." He closed out his set with the soaring Americana mining "Till Forever Falls Apart" and breezy acoustic nugget "Let's Fall in Love for the Night."

Maggie Rogers — Appearing on the Coachella Stage, singer Maggie Rogers' emotive "Light On" and soulful follow-up "Falling Water" really showcased her uplifting approach and soaring vocals. She ended her 45-minute appearance with the driving dance track "That's Where I Am."
