Tell me more: Every time singer-songwriter Aimee Mann releases a new album it marks another reason to celebrate her exceptional and rare legacy. On her latest masterwork Mental Illness (the ninth solo album of her distinguished career, not counting her contributions to 1999's "Magnolia" and her role in the duo dubbed The Both co-starring Ted Leo), Mann scales back the more sweeping Beatlesque sonic textures of Bachelor No. 2 and Lost In Space in favor of a more sparse delivery in the service of her bewitching songcraft. Mental Illness finds an expanse where her introspective songs continue to be bolstered by an almost otherworldly touch festooned with melodic lines ensuring that even downcast themes shimmer and charm. On the baroque folk-flavored "Goose Snow Cone," Mann sings "Even birds of a feather find it hard to fly." Later on during the enticing folk rocker "Patient Zero," she sardonically sings "Life is grand / And wouldn't you like to have it go as planned." Even on the relatively straightforward "You Never Loved Me," there is a nuanced touch and emotional weight that fully lures the listener. Tell me more: Songstress Ruthie Foster's Joy Comes Back showcases the Austin, Texas-based artist's mighty touch via performances that masterfully blend soul, gospel and blues material. In addition to featuring an original song (the soul-stirring R&B ballad "Open Sky"), Joy Comes Back offers up a diverse mix of songwriters represented across its 10-track run. Gospel choruses are given their welcome due via an uplifting take of Sean Staples' "Joy Comes Back" (featuring some hot slide guitar from Derek Trucks) and a sweet take on Stevie Wonder's "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever," while a reworked interpretation of Black Sabbath's epic "War Pigs" erupts as a heavy Chicago blues-styled firestorm. The recordings here leap across time and explode with youthful energy and garage rock grandeur. Tell me more: Fans of melodic hard rock will want to grab a copy of Don't Let Up, the 12th studio album from Night Ranger. The San Francisco-spawned rock quintet unleash plenty of hard-charging rockers in celebration of the band's 35th anniversary. In fact, this writer is certain that every track on the disc will please the faithful. The blend of driving hard rock rhythms, soaring vocal choruses and impressive guitar work featuring the tandem fast-fingered talents of Brad Gillis and Keri Kelli continues to be a surefire formula. Singer-bassist Jack Blades and singer-drummer Kelly Keagy continue to provide a strong rhythm section. The infectious "Somehow Someway," guitar-centered "Running Out of Time" and "Say What You Want," and decidedly melodic title track "Don't Let Up" are among the standouts on the 11-song LP. The Return of Gorillaz celebrated with album news; hear four tracks now
Great news for a Friday with yesterday's announcement that Gorillaz are set to return with a new full-length album on April 28, 2017! Titled Humanz, the new album features the "virtual band" led by Blur leading man Damon Albarn and collaborator Jamie Hewlett.
Gorillaz has been mostly quiet since 2011, so it's fantastic to see their official return is now official. The icing on the cake of the news about the upcoming album is a six-minute video titled "Saturnz Barz," which not only features that song but parts of three other album tracks too!

The album was recorded in Paris, London, Chicago, New York and Jamaica. For those lucky enough to be on the other side of the Atlantic, Gorillaz will headline their Demon Dayz Festival in Margate, England on June 10, 2017. There are a number of notable big names who guest on the new album too.

Aimee Mann’s highly anticipated new album Mental Illness—out on March 31 via her own SuperEgo Records—is exclusively streaming now on NPR First Listen, who proclaim “…these songs are buoyantly catchy in their own way, with calmly dispensed beauty that consistently outweighs their dourness,” while the Los Angeles Times furthers “Every doomed syllable is sacred and every tragic rhyme fits, as though each song were a puzzle to which only Mann knows the solution.” Additionally, Mann will perform her track “Goose Snow Cone” on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Monday, March 27. Mental Illness shows off Mann’s rich, incisive and wry melancholia in an almost all-acoustic format, with a “finger-picky” style inspired by some of her favorite ‘60s and ‘70s folk-rock records, augmented by haunting strings arranged by her longtime producer, Paul Bryan. Additional players include: Jonathan Coultonon acoustic guitar and backing vocals, Jay Bellerose on drums, Jamie Edwardson piano, John Roderick as a co-writer and Ted Leo (who recently joined her in a joint side project, The Both) as a background singer.
On this eleven-track album, the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning singer remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the songs but tales told by friends. “I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs,” Mann says. “I don’t know—people may have a different viewpoint—but that’s my own interpretation of the cliché about me. So if they thought that my songs were very down-tempo, very depressing, very sad and very acoustic, I thought I’d just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-they’re-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I could…I mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but it’s so blunt that it’s funny.”

After several albums with Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of her record label, SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on many film soundtracks, most notably the score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, with “Save Me” landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song.
In 2014, Mann joined up with Ted Leo for a more rock-oriented duo project, releasing a self-titled album under the name The Both. Other extracurricular activities since her previous record Charmer ranged from playing herself on the hit TV series Portlandia to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Named one of The Huffington Post’s “13 Funny Musicians You Should Be Following On Twitter,” Mann has gained a diehard social media following for her quick wit and stinging observation.

Saturday, May 20, is a day geared toward rock fans with Joe Walsh, Robin Trower and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience set as headliners. Sunday, May 21, is decidedly going to appeal to fans of soul with Melissa Etheridge's Memphis Rock & Soul (a tribute to Stax Records), gospel great Mavis Staples, JJ Grey & Mofro, and the Marcus King Band set to perform.
Other notables set to perform at the festival include singer-songwriter/guitarist Chris Isaak, singer-guitarist Samantha Fish, classic blues rockers Canned Heat, country guitar great Junior Brown, killer ensemble Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, dynamic blues duo Moreland and Arbuckle, and France-based singer-guitarist Nico Duportal.
There are three stages featuring music, and there is a real positive spirit among the fans who attend the event every May.

NEW CHUCK BERRY ALBUM 'CHUCK' SET FOR JUNE 16 RELEASE ON DUALTONE RECORDS
ST. LOUIS, MO - MARCH 22, 2017 -- Dualtone Records (an Entertainment One Company), has set a June 16 release date for 'CHUCK,' the final album and first new recordings in nearly four decades by founding rock and roll legend Chuck Berry, who passed away last week at the age of 90.
Comprised of ten new recordings, eight of which were written by Berry, 'CHUCK' is his first new album since 1979's 'Rock It.' It was recorded and produced by Berry in various studios around St. Louis and features his longtime hometown backing group - including his children Charles Berry Jr. (guitar) and Ingrid Berry (vocals, harmonica), plus Jimmy Marsala (Berry's bassist for forty years), Robert Lohr (piano), and Keith Robinson (drums) - which supported him for nearly two decades on over two hundred residency shows at the famed Blueberry Hill club. The album also includes guest performances from Gary Clark Jr., Tom Morello, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Chuck's grandson Charles Berry III. Acclaimed author and historian Douglas Brinkley contributes liner notes.

"Working to prepare the release of this record in recent months and in fact over the last several years brought him a great sense of joy and satisfaction," the Berry family said in a statement posted to Facebook earlier this week. "While our hearts are very heavy at this time, we know that he had no greater wish than to see this album released to the world, and we know of no better way to celebrate and remember his 90 years of life than through his music."
Some of the songs on 'CHUCK' were originally conceived as far back as the 1980s, with Berry developing them in his home studio in St. Louis over many years during down time between tours. He worked on the album through 2014. When health concerns forced him to stop touring and recording in 2015, Berry continued to oversee production and planning for 'CHUCK,' enlisting his family and close friend Joe Edwards, the owner of Blueberry Hill, to fulfill his wishes that the album be completed and released. And from album highlight "Lady B. Goode," a spiritual sequel to the iconic "Johnny B. Goode" featuring ripping solos from three generations of Berry guitarists, to the poignant country balladry of "Darlin'," a duet with his daughter Ingrid, 'CHUCK' truly is a family affair.
"Working on my Dad's record has been one of the best experiences of my life," said Charles Berry Jr. "I will forever treasure the musical conversations we had, and the time we spent together completing it."
Chuck Berry's passing on March 18, 2017, prompted an outpouring of support and condolences from fans, fellow musicians, and world leaders - from members of The Rolling Stones and Beatles, to former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Rolling Stone claimed that Berry "defined rock & roll during it's early years and for decades to come." The New York Times called Berry rock's "master theorist and conceptual genius, the songwriter who understood what the kids wanted before they knew themselves," adding that after 60 years, his earliest music "still sounds reckless and audacious."
