Day 1 at NAMM 2014: Jonny Lang, Blue Öyster Cult, Shawn Jones, Alana Springsteen, more

While NAMM certainly offers a great place to discover the latest innovations in music making-related technology and the rollout of new instruments, it is also a wonderful way to catch established and up-and-comers performing in front of the most discerning of audiences.

Day 1 at the 2014 NAMM Show (Jan. 23, 2014) offered the chance to see established acts such as Jonny Lang and Blue Oyster Cult, as well as talented under-the-radar and rising stars. Believe me, this post will not be the last time you hear the name Alana Springsteen.

Jonny Lang brought his powerful fusion of blues-rock, soul and gospel to the official opening night concert held on the GoPro stage on the outdoor plaza positioned in front of the Anaheim Convention Center. His 90-minute set was another ideal setting for the 32-year-old artist to make a case to celebrate the power of blues-rock. Opening with "(Blew Up) The House," the single from his latest album Fight for my Soul, Lang and his band fired up the chilly evening with his distinctive mix of powerful vocals (notably on "Turn Around" and "Red Light") and blazing guitar work that just keeps getting better (as evidenced by "A Quitter Never Wins"). He closed out his concert with the jam-minded "We Are the Same" (with several of his band mates featured) before offering up a Muddy Waters cover, "Forty Days and Forty Nights," as a fitting encore.

Blue Öyster Cult is not known as an acoustic band, so the curiosity factor was palpable when the band took the stage inside Peavey's booth armed only with acoustic guitars. With the Peavey booth (actually a large room on the second level of the convention center) having a capacity of only 200, many fans simply couldn't get into the showcase if they didn't arrive early for the 2 p.m. set. BÖC didn't disappoint; lead singer-guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser led the classic rock outfit through fiery acoustic versions of some of the band's most beloved material. Opening with the 1981 hit "Burnin' for You," it was clear that Roeser's talents on guitar translated just fine to via the unplugged setting, and harmonies provided by Eric Bloom and Richie Castellano brought the ambitious songs (which have always featured a mix of progressive and hard rock strains) to life. The crowd positioned right up against the stage greeted the announcement the band was going to play "Then Came the Last Days of May" (off the group's 1972 debut) with wild cheers, and the masterwork allowed the group to flex its musical muscles in full; the song's shifting tempos, blend of sterling guitar work from Roeser and Castellano, and lush textures of all three guitars together was outstanding.

BÖC had still one other surprise for the fortunate gathering, with the announcement that lead guitarist Alex Skolnick (of the pioneering metal band Testament) was going to join the band for their final song. With four talented guitarists on stage, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" was given the ultimate NAMM treatment with an extended version that featured Skolnick and Roeser trading licks, and the crowd getting in on the act with a sing-along of the "Don't Fear the Reaper" chorus.

Shawn Jones frequently performs in Orange County, but his appearance at the GHS Strings booth was something special. He performed instrumental versions of four of his original songs, showcasing his chops that are frequently on display as lead guitarist for singer Deana Carter (including on her just-released album Southern Way of Life). At NAMM, Jones  showcased his love of the blues with a potent take on "Bottom of the Bottle" and a nuanced, graceful version of the Celtic-styled "Missing the Mourns" featuring some beautiful harmonics.

There was nothing short of genuine surprise and awe when 13-year-old Alana Springsteen began to perform her song "Waste of Time" in the lobby of the Anaheim Marriott. She had been invited to participate in a "Song Round" performance with well-known area artists Tim Moyer and Kerry Getz. After Springsteen (no relation to the Boss) played her first song, it was clear her shining soprano, effortless acoustic guitar work and warm personality are a potent package. She was then instructed she should play another song which was equally powerful and cast an obvious spell on the large crowd seated around the stage. She was then told by the veterans sharing the stage she should go ahead and just play her songs for the remainder of the session.

Her next songs provided a glimpse that Springsteen's talent is for real and the depth of her collective talents clearly outdistance her youth. The Norfolk, Virginia native closed her set with the original ballad, "What I Wouldn't Give," which featured her textured acoustic guitar work and a powerful lyrical message of thanks to the military. She was then given a standing ovation, something that I can't recall seeing happen in the intimate afternoon showcases that feature top-tier songwriters from around the world during NAMM. 

Although I never checked in with the media folks to see what other surprises were at NAMM, I did literally walk into Vintage Trouble guitarist Nalle Colt, whose band blew away this writer in an afternoon set at Coachella last year. He broke the news that the band will be going back into the studio later this month to begin work on their sophomore album and followup to 2012's The Bomb Shelter Sessions.

Media Preview Day recap offers preview of 2014 NAMM

Daytime temps might have visitors from around the globe swearing it's summertime, but the kickoff of the 2014 NAMM Show can only mean one thing; January has arrived and so has the world's largest gathering of the music products industry. The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) kicked off their annual winter show held at the Anaheim Convention Center earlier today with Media Preview Day.

With more than 100,000 attendees from 90 different nations expected to attend the NAMM Show (Thursday-Sunday, Jan. 23-26), the Media Preview Day held earlier today (Wednesday, Jan. 22) afforded a nice chance to get an intimate leap on this year's trade show with about 20 companies showcasing their products for a swarm of reporters, bloggers, photographers and new media insiders.

It is always the blend of cutting-edge technology and time-honored craftsmanship of acoustic instruments that makes checking out NAMM pretty special. I couldn't take my eyes off the beautiful OM-ECHF Navy Blues Limited Edition guitar, the third in a series of collaborations between C.F. Martin & Co., Eric Clapton, and Hiroshi Fujiwara. With fewer than 200 of these guitars set to be made (and each signed by Clapton, Fujiwara, Dick Boak and C.F. Martin IV), it's easy to see why the suggested retail price is $6,999. While acoustic guitars (especially great ones!) will never go out of style, innovation is another big part of NAMM. Dion Dublin, a former English footballer, brought his new creation known as The Dube to showcase how it offers a full percussion drum sound in a futuristic package. He explained that he developed the instrument about eight years ago while he was still playing professional football. Not only did The Dube sound great during a demonstration, but there is little doubt that the instrument is easier to transport than a full drum kit and likely perfect for many live settings.

And of course NAMM wouldn't be complete without live performances by top players. Art Alexakis, lead singer of the alternative rock outfit Everclear, came in support of Los Angeles College of Music, where he was recently selected to be chair of songwriting department. He performed a powerful acoustic version of "Santa Monica" and stressed the importance of providing young people with the chance to perform and write music.

The rocker recalled that when he was asked about teaching at the school, he was both honored and excited by the challenge.

"I want to inspire like I was inspired," Alexakis said.

He noted that while at NAMM he is working with several students from the school at the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus which is parked in front of the Anaheim Convention Center throughout the NAMM Show. Click here to watch Alexakis perform "Santa Monica" courtesy of the NAMM site.

While at Media Preview Day, I also got a look at some amazing Deering Banjos that I hope to check out in more detail this weekend; I also spent a good amount of time at the IK Multimedia display where I got a look at some amazing gadgets and gizmos including the iRig Mic HD, the first handheld universal digital microphone for use by owners of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac/PC and Android devices. I also was treated to a demonstration of iRing, the first wearable, touch-less ring controller for music apps that was so impressive it needs to be seen to be believed. Whew!

Damon Albarn's first solo record titled 'Everyday Robots' in April

Exciting news for fans of Blur and Gorillaz; singer-songwriter Damon Albarn is set to release his first-ever solo album on April 29!

NEW ALBUM: EVERYDAY ROBOTS   Title Track Video World Broadcast Premiere Tonight on Sundance Channel 

A new studio album by Damon Albarn - his first solo record - titled Everyday Robots will be released by Warner Bros. Records on April 29, 2014.

Recorded last year at Albarn's West London studio 13, Everyday Robots is produced by Richard Russell of XL, with whom Damon produced Bobby Womack's The Bravest Man In The Universe - and features guest appearances from Brian Eno and Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes).

Led by title track "Everyday Robots", the 12 songs here invite the listener into Albarn's world for a genuine 'one-to-one' and are the most soul-searching and autobiographical since his musical journey began: a career that started with Blur and spans Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Mali Music, Monkey: Journey To The West, Dr Dee and Africa Express.

The songs' subject matter is more directly personal than before and is inspired by Albarn's experiences from early childhood to now, including the trappings of our modern existence, computer games, mobile phones and nature versus technology.

The lead, title track "Everyday Robots" is accompanied by a video directed by artist and designer Aitor Throup that receives its world broadcast premiere tonight on the Sundance Channel (10:45PM ET on dual feed cable; 7:45PM PT on DIRECTV and DISH). The film is a digital portrait of Albarn by Throup and uses CGI software and actual cranial scans and facial reconstruction techniques to explore and reveal the process of building a uniquely personal portrait of an artist and individual.

Throup also creatively directed the visual concepts for the single and album artwork, as well as shooting Albarn for the album cover image.

Damon Albarn is confirmed to appear at The Governors Ball Music Festival taking place June 6-8 on Randall's Island in New York City with a band including guitarist Seye, drummer Pauli The PSM, bassist Jeff Wootton and Mike Smith on keyboards.

Everyday Robots will be available as a digital download, CD and 12" vinyl.

Rock and Worship Roadshow roars into Anaheim

My review was originally published on The Orange County Register site on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.

Led by the hard rock of Skillet, the power of Third Day and the Alarm-ing passion of newcomers the Neverclaim, the praise-filled event proved praiseworthy indeed.

There was truly a little bit of everything for Christian music enthusiasts who came out Friday night (Jan. 17, 2014) for the Rock and Worship Roadshow at Honda Center.

From the hard-hitting metal of Skillet (above) and melodic Southern rock of Third Day, the event’s top-billed stars, to newer sounds like the catchy, Michael Jackson-esque dance-pop of Royal Tailor and U2-mining anthems of the Neverclaim, the eclectic mix of short sets changed swiftly at an event where believers were encouraged to help sponsor children via Compassion International. (That cause was introduced by comedian Tom Wolf, who tempered his humor with heartfelt appeal.

The crowd was treated to nine different performances, most running a mere 15 minutes, with several young up-and-comers rightly impressing a capacity crowd, the majority of which paid $20 and under to attend.

Royal Tailor proved to be one of the most pleasing acts, with young singer Tauren Wells’ soaring tenor and cool moves showcased on the up-tempo “Making Me New” as well as the beautiful R&B ballad “Remain.” He also tapped into more current urban dynamics with the powerful rock-rap showcase “Got That Fire,” the leadoff track from the group's excellent self-titled sophomore album.

Other early standouts came courtesy of the Neverclaim, a six-man Portland (Ore.) troupe whose music and stage presence recalled the fire of U2 and the Alarm in the early ’80s.

They opened with mid-tempo Americana-tinged rocker “The Soul Longs,” which played like the Alarm’s Mike Peters fronting Mumford & Sons, with banjo adding a nice touch to the traditional feel. Then came “One Truth One Life,” a more straightforward praise song, but the band’s firepower, especially singer Jeremiah Carlson, remained impressive, ending with the uplifting and instantly memorable “Revival.”

Not every young artist on the bill was able to attain the same heights, however. The heavy rock of We as Human had 13 minutes to make it count – and they didn't – while New York hip-hop artist Andy Mineo failed to fuse enough hooks into his selections to awe. Bogata-based band Soulfire Revolution was a bit stronger, stirring with its new original “We Sing.”

Third Day delivered the strongest performance of the night, the Atlanta troupe's crowd-pleasing 35-minute turn enhanced by an audience eager to sing and clap along with its infectious rock offerings. “Kicking and Screaming,” one of several songs from the quartet’s latest album, Miracle, was especially energetic, outdistancing the studio version and placing singer Mac Powell’s powerful baritone fully on display. The textured “God of Wonders,” on the other hand, shined via a magical solo from guitarist Mark Lee.

Singer-songwriter Jamie Grace, a 22-year-old out of the same city discovered via her YouTube channel, delighted with her upbeat reggae-leaning tune "Hold Me." While her far-reaching, Nelly Furtado-like vocals and appealing personality proved entertaining over 15 minutes, she likely needs to bring a more focused approach to get to the next level.

The night-ending set from Skillet boasted a blend of metal and hard rock that was a bit too loud and forceful for a number of older fans, who headed for the exits. The Memphis-spawned band delivered powerfully, though, focusing on its latest albums, 2009’s Wake and last year’s Rise.

Thundering versions of “Hero” and “Sick of It” launched the set before several additional musicians on electronic violin and cello added a symphonic lift to “Not Gonna Die,” further strengthened by the harmony of lead singer John Cooper with drummer Jen Ledger's pretty soprano on the choruses. Later in the set, the ballad “American Noise” offered an introspective look at how the band's faith sits with modern-day life, before the band roared back to full strength for the forceful “Monster.”

About Toad The Wet Sprocket’s 2013 release, New Constellation

 

New Constellation brings all of the sincerity of Toad the Wet Sprocket’s early catalog into the present, with a collection of songs that seamlessly picks up where the band left off in 1997, while also showcasing the band members' individual growth as songwriters and musicians since then.

 

The same creative curiosity that inspired the band to form in 1986 and then to branch out in different directions in 1998 has brought them full circle to come back together again. As Glen Phillips put it, "At some point we would play shows and remember not why we'd broken up, but why we got together in the first place. That made it possible and exciting to move forward again." The result is New Constellation, an album of 11 new songs produced by Mikal Blue.

The band's relentless touring saw them captivate music fans at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, along with standout performances on Letterman, Fallon, Leno and Conan. However, this extensive touring is where the musicians began grappling with both significant inner turmoil and the external pressure created by notoriety. After some time, the guys all agreed that the answer was to return to the band's roots and find the anchor of musical simplicity.

Rivers In The Wasteland - the sound of a band excited to reconnect with the idea of a fresh start - was co-produced by the band with the help of various producers including Joe Chiccarelli, Kevin Augunas, Ed Cash and Jerrod Bettis, and was recorded at the band's own Plantation Studios in Charleston, Fairfax Recordings (formally Sound City Studios) in Los Angeles and Blackbird Studios in Nashville.

Earlier last month, SCYTHIA released their new music video for ‘Bear Claw Tavern’ via Guitar World. The video has gone viral with more than 50,000 views in less than a week’s time. Also last month, the band shared a brand new track via Metal Injection entitled ‘Into The Storm’. Listen here! The track features a blistering guitar solo by Teemu Mäntysaari of Finnish melodic power metal band Wintersun. The track was recorded by Lasse Lammert, mixed by Nino Laurenne, mastered by Svante Forsback.

Formed in 2008, SCYTHIA’s music is recognized throughout their home country for its rich, poetic storytelling and epic melodies. Because of this, and touring like a cavalry of nomads, they have taken the independent scene by storm as they gather more and more fans both domestically and internationally. They were nominated for the Best Metal Group/Duo for Canada’s Sirius XM Indies - Independent Music Awards, amongst other reputable Canadian metal bands. Other nominees included Bison B.C, Derelict, Devin Townsend Project and Mares Of Thrace.

SCYTHIA delivered their first album Of War in 2010 where the band's distinctive sound was forged, which carried on to their next release Of Exile. While recording their third release, For The Bear, their sole purpose was to bring great melodic metal to the table, which in response has received nothing but a sensational response in the media and radio. Most of all they did not forget their fans, new and remnant from their earlier years. For The Bear was released last year as an EP.

We Were Promised Jetpacks will return this winter with E Rey - Live in Philadelphia, an album that was recorded at Philadelphia's Union Transfer. The live album will be released on February 25 via FatCat and follows up We Were Promised Jetpacks critically acclaimed sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach. Consequence Of Sound premiered "Peace Sign" the first new We Were Promised Jetpacks song in over two years. The track is an early live-version taster of their upcoming studio album, which will be released in the fall. ZZ WARD ANNOUNCES ‘LAST LOVE’ TOUR AND COACHELLA DEBUT

Following a year of sold out dates, festival performances and TV appearances, ZZ Ward is kicking off 2014 with a bang, announcing her ‘Last Love’ headline tour set to kick off February 28^th with a hometown show in Philadelphia PA (Ward was born in Abington PA) and culminate with two performances at this year’s Coachella Music Festival April 11 & 18 alongside Outkast, The Replacements and Broken Bells.  Direct support on the Last Love Tour will be indie-popsters Grizfolk with a third opener to be announced shortly.  An engaging and mesmerizing performer, ZZ’s live performances have been called out by everyone from the Boston Herald who described Ward as having, “the confidence and swagger of a hip-hop MC” to the Chicago Tribune who declared, “So what are you waiting for? UME TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM MONUMENTS ON MARCH 4TH VIA DANGERBIRD RECORDS

Austin rock band Ume has announced that they will release their much-anticipated new album, Monuments, on March 4th via Dangerbird Records.Monuments is the follow-up to the trio's heralded debut full-length album Phantoms, which was released in 2011. The new album was recorded in Seattle, WA at Robert Lang Studios and produced by Grammy® Award winning producer Adam Kasper (Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Cat Power). "We didn't hold anything back with Monuments. Ume explores the artier, heavier side of indie rock, post-punk, and alternative rock and have already garnered the attention of Nylon, who declared, "This band is ready to break out in a whole new way... Ume have won over audiences across the country as a result of their momentous live show and toured over 150 dates in support of their prior release. They've supported ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Warpaint, The Smashing Pumpkins, Franz Ferdinand, Helmet, and Cursive, and were personally invited to open for Jane's Addiction at a Lollapalooza afterparty by Perry Ferrell last year.
