MIXES OF A LOST WORLD, conceived and compiled by Robert Smith, is a new remix collection of tracks from The Cure’s acclaimed #1 2024 album, SONGS OF A LOST WORLD. The set features brand-new remixes from Four Tet, Paul Oakenfold, Orbital and many more, with the deluxe edition including additional remixes and reworks by Chino Moreno (Deftones), Mogwai and 65daysofstatic, among others.

 

This stunning collection will be released on June 13th on Fiction/Capitol Records, with all The Cure's recording royalties benefitting War Child UK (https://www.warchild.org.uk).

 

MIXES OF A LOST WORLD will be available as 3LP/3CD/3MC deluxe editions featuring both the ‘Artists’ & ‘Remixers’ tracks. The 3LP set includes three half speed mastered 180g heavyweight black bio vinyl LPs, a tri-gatefold printed sleeve, and a large foldout poster; the triple deluxe CD has an 8-panel digisleeve and includes a foldout poster; the limited edition 3MC set has individually printed o-cards and obi-strip and is exclusive to The Cure store (https://shopuk.thecure.com/collections/music-1).

Initially formed in 1978, The Cure has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, headlined the Glastonbury festival four times and been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. They are considered to be one of the most influential bands to ever come out of the UK. The Cure’s first album in 16 years, Songs Of A Lost World reached #1 in fifteen countries and the top 5 in a further seven, including the U.S. at #4.

 

Andy Vella, a long-time Cure collaborator, has ‘remixed’ the artwork for the album, which as with Songs Of A Lost World, features 'Bagatelle', a 1975 sculpture by Janez Pirnat.

Los Angeles – April 22, 2025 – Steely Dan’s darkly cynical and musically intricate fifth album, 1976’s The Royal Scam, with such fan favorites as “Kid Charlemagne,” “The Fez,” “The Caves of Altamira,” and the biting title track, will return to vinyl for the first time in more than forty years on June 6, 2025 via Geffen/UMe, concluding the extensive reissue program of the band’s classic ABC and MCA Records catalog that began in November 2022 with the Dan’s legendary debut LP, Can’t Buy A Thrill. The series, which is personally overseen by founding member Donald Fagen, returns the group’s first seven records to vinyl, most of which haven’t been available since their original release.   Pre-order The Royal Scam now: https://steelydan.lnk.to/TheRoyalScamLPPR   The Royal Scam has been meticulously remastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tapes for release as a limited edition premium 45 RPM version on Ultra High-Quality Vinyl (UHQR) from Analogue Productions, the audiophile in-house reissue label of Acoustic Sounds. Analogue Productions is also releasing this series of titles on Super Audio CD (SACD).   UMe’s standard 33 1/3 RPM 180-gram version has been remastered by Joe Nino-Hernes at Sterling Sound from high-resolution digital files and pressed at Precision. They will be housed in reproductions of the original artwork. Nino-Hernes’ new remaster of The Royal Scam will also be available to stream on the DSPs on June 6, joining the already available remasters of the rest of the catalog – Can’t Buy A Thrill, Countdown To Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, Aja, and Gaucho - which were remastered by Alex Abrash from Bernie Grundman’s masters.    The 45 RPM UHQR versions will be pressed at Analogue Productions’ Quality Record Pressings on 200-gram Clarity Vinyl, packaged in a deluxe box, and will include a booklet detailing the entire process of making a UHQR along with a certificate of inspection. Each UHQR is pressed, using hand-selected vinyl, with attention paid to every single detail of every single record. All of the innovations introduced by QRP that have been generating such incredible critical acclaim are applied to each UHQR. The 200-gram records feature the same flat profile that helped to make the original UHQR so desirable.   Led by the songwriting and virtuoso musical duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan released an extraordinary run of seven albums on ABC Records and MCA Records from 1972 through 1980. Filled with topline musicianship, clever and subversive wordplay, ironic humor, genius arrangements, and pop hits that outshone the Top 40 of its day, their records, which were as sophisticated and cerebral as they were inscrutable, were stylistically diverse, melding their love of jazz with rock, blues, and impeccable pop songcraft.   Released in 1976, The Royal Scam marked a pivotal moment in Steely Dan’s evolution toward studio perfectionism, delivering a darker, more cynical tone wrapped in complex jazz-rock arrangements. This album features some of the band’s sharpest songwriting and introduces legendary drummer Bernard Purdie to the fold—his first appearance on a Steely Dan record—bringing his signature groove to tracks like “Kid Charlemagne” and “Green Earrings.” Guitarist Larry Carlton delivers searing solos throughout the album, particularly on “Don’t Take Me Alive,” while Dean Parks adds talk box flair to the reggae-influenced “Haitian Divorce.” The album also includes standout cuts like the funky, offbeat “The Fez” and the epic title track, “The Royal Scam,” a scathing portrait of shattered American dreams. With contributions from bassist Chuck Rainey, keyboardist Paul Griffin, and the soaring background vocals of Michael McDonald, The Royal Scam combines biting social commentary with masterful musicianship, making it a cult favorite and a testament to Steely Dan’s uncompromising artistic vision.   Despite achieving gold record status and peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, The Royal Scam was not as critically well-received as its predecessors at the time, or the band’s masterpiece, Aja, that would follow just a year later, but since its release more than 50 years ago it has become a favorite among the fans as well as the music press who have come to better understand its quixotic charms and cryptic characters. In 2004, Rolling Stone awarded the album five stars in their retrospective review, atoning for their original less than stellar review. More recently, in March 2025, four of the tracks (“Kid Charlemagne,” “The Caves of Altamira,” “Sign In Stranger,” The Royal Scam”) were ranked in the band’s top 25 in the magazine’s ranking of every Steel Dan song. “Kid Charlemagne” was ranked as the band’s second-best song (while Mojo ranked it as #3), exclaiming, “Drawing on the exploits of famed LSD manufacturer (and Grateful Dead audio engineer) Owsley Stanley, ‘Kid Charlemagne’ is an outlaw parable for the ignominious end of the Sixties counterculture. A bustling rocker juiced by a sprightly clavichord jump and laced with a first ballot hall of fame guitar solo from Larry Carlton. Donald Fagen tells the tale like a hippie noir — diamonds crossed with pearls and Technicolor motorhomes dissolving into darkly comic bumbling.” Meanwhile, The Royal Scam was ranked as Steely Dan’s second-best album by Stereogum, declaring it “their fiercest, funkiest record in their entire catalog, a classic that transitioned them from the uneasy company of the yacht-rock smooth to a mean unit that grooved like Stevie for pessimists.”

ABOUT STEELY DAN Steely Dan helped define the soundtrack of the '70s with hits such as "Reeling in the Years,” "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Peg," "Deacon Blues," "Babylon Sisters," and "Hey Nineteen," culled from their seven platinum albums issued between 1972 and 1980 (including 1977's groundbreaking Aja). Coachella 2025: Weekend 1 sets the stage for Weekend 2 music making

Headed to Weekend 2 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival? In addition to catching well-known acts such as Lady Gaga, Green Day and the Go-Go's, there are more than 150 other artists scheduled to play over the three-day span (April 18-20). Here are some under-the-radar rock artists worth catching when they perform in Indio this weekend.

TOPS — Canadian indie rock troupe TOPS (singer Jane Penny, guitarist David Carriere, drummer Riley Fleck and keyboardist Marta Cikojevic) impressed throughout their 40-minute set in the Sonora tent on Friday afternoon; TOPS blended '80s and modern rock stylings into their own signature sound. The band's debut album Tender Opposites was released in 2012, and TOPS has since released three more full-length studio albums.

Benson Boone — Performing on the Coachella Stage on Friday evening, rising singer-songwriter Benson Boone impressed in the early evening with a set that ended with an inspired cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and his own hit "Beautiful Things," both selections featuring guitar great Brian May in a surprise appearance. The sight of May playing guitar so masterfully was great to see; the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer suffered a minor stroke back in September 2024 that rendered him temporarily without the use of his left arm. At Coachella, May looked terrific and this writer hopes he makes an encore appearance Weekend 2. 

The Marias — The Los Angeles-based quartet made an eagerly-awaited return to Coachella last weekend, having last performed at the festival in 2022. The band delivered one of the best and most memorable sets of Weekend 1 with an incredible hour-long performance on the Outdoor Theatre stage on Friday night. Fans of Cocteau Twins, the Album Leaf and Zero 7 will all find something to love about the Marias' bewitching sound.

Parcels — Blending funk, electropop, disco, progressive and modern rock, Australian quintet Parcels defies easy categorization — and that's a good thing. At their performance last Friday night, the crowd danced and grooved to the group's infectious originals including "Tieduprightnow," "Safeandsound" (the latter featuring a fiery close recalling the power of Neil Young & Crazy Horse), infectious "Gamesofluck," shimmering "Somethinggreater," and harmonies-adorned ballad "Leaveyourlove."

Blonde Redhead — An enduring American rock outfit that blends psychedelic, dreamy alt rock, Baroque pop, shoegaze and art damage stylings, Blonde Redhead delivered a mesmerizing performance in the Sonora tent on Saturday. Catch them if you can when they return for Weekend 2.

The Beaches — Canadian rock quartet the Beaches performed in a packed Gobi tent on Sunday afternoon, offering up a slew of catchy melodic rock originals over the course of 45 fast-moving minutes. The all-female rock outfit offers up a winning style that blends post-punk, melodic rock, dance rock and indie effortlessly; "Everything Is Boring," burning "Edge of the Earth" and fiery kiss-off "Blame Brett" were among the strong songs the Beaches tore through during their Weekend 1 set.

The American Blues icon Charlie Musselwhite. He's been writing classic songs for nearly six decades. He's a prolific songwriter who writes organic, compelling stories with ease. There is real emotional depth at the core of his songs.   When asked his "Sad Eyes" by Glide magazine, Mussewhite said, "Sad Eyes is about a lonely single guy in a club that sees a girl that looks lonely with sad eyes. They might not be all that attracted to each other, but why not enjoy each others company for awhile anyway? It's not love, but it's not bad. Check out the Glide article here.   More than any other harmonica player of his generation, Charlie Musselwhite can rightfully lay claim to inheriting the mantle of many of the great harp players that came before him with music as dark as Mississippi mud and uplifting as California's blue skies. In an era when the term legendary gets applied to auto-tuned pop stars, this singular blues harp player, singer, songwriter, and guitarist has earned and deserves to be honored as a true master of American classic vernacular music.   Recorded at Kid Andersen's Greaseland Studio in San Jose, California, and Clarksdale Sound Stage in Clarksdale, Mississippi, it's the first time Charlie has recorded with his long-time touring band, comprised of guitarist Matt Stubbs (GA-20), drummer June Core (Robert Lockwood Jr.) and bassist Randy Bermudes (James Cotton), along with Andersen who has been in and out of the band for many years. Photo by Michael Weinstrob ABOUT CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE Charlie Musselwhite has received 13 Grammy nominations throughout his illustrious career, including his last release, Mississippi Son, and 33 Blues Music Awards. In 2014, his collaboration with Ben Harper Get Up won a Grammy, and in 2010, he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Charlie's career took off quickly soon after arriving in Chicago in the early sixties, where he was an integral part of the blues renaissance along with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, both genuine proteges of Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf. In 1967, at just 22 years of age, he released his debut album, Stand Back! , which garnered significant critical acclaim. On a whim, Musselwhite relocated to San Francisco that same year. Contemporaries like Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield followed suit and were welcomed into the counterculture scene around the Fillmore West as authentic purveyors of real-deal blues. Charlie has also collaborated with an eclectic list of incredible artists over the years, including Ben Harper, Cyndi Lauper, Eddie Vedder, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Gov't Mule, INXS, Mickey Hart, and Japan's Kodo Drummers, George Thorogood, Eliades Ochoa, Cat Stevens, Elvin Bishop and, close friend and best man at his wedding John Lee Hooker. In 2023, Musselwhite was cast in Martin Scorsese's film Killers of the Flower Moon in the role of Alvin Reynolds. Musselwhite's sixty-year journey has taken him from Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago, and California. He is living proof that great music only gets better with age. Sixty years of nonstop touring, 20 albums, 1 Grammy, and 33 Blues Music Awards later, his depth of expression as a singer and an instrumentalist grew more profound with each passing year. THE ALBUM LEAF SHARES NEW ATMOSPHERIC AMBIENT LP ROTATIONS   LISTEN NOW   ANNOUNCES SPECIAL LOS ANGELES SHOW ON APRIL 22, 2025 AS PART OF COAXIAL’S 10th ANNIVERSARY April 11, 2025 – Today, The Album Leaf shares his new ambient LP, Rotations. The record is a mediative experiment into atmospheric sound. Creator Jimmy LaValle explains, “This collection of music is a true reflection of my creative process—rooted in sound exploration, experimentation, and spontaneous response. Each track captures a moment of creative discovery, free from the pressure of achieving a polished result. Throughout my career, I’ve often placed significant weight on what an album should be. With this release, I’ve let go of those expectations to share a body of work that feels genuine and authentic.”    The Album Leaf also announced he will play his first show in Los Angeles on April 22 as part of Coaxial Art’s 10 year anniversary celebration with a special in-the-round performance at Human Resources along with Emma Palm and Marc Merza, Lenard Smith, and Joshua Oduga. More information and tickets can be found HERE. The prolific Los Angeles-based electronic artist The Album Leaf has had a fruitful few years. He released his acclaimed 2023 full-length album, Future Falling, the 2024 EP, Blast, featuring sax player Aaron D4VD (Anderson Paak., Tyler The Creator, Herbie Hancock), a series of remixes by esteemed artists like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Dustin O’Halloran, Boom Bip, and Balmorhea, written several scores, including one for the film Things Will Be Different (SXSW 2024 premiere) and Touch Me that just was applauded at Sundance. He also was featured on several charity compilations for the Los Angeles fires, including ambient compilation FOR LA, curated by Hollie Kenniff, and indie rock compilation Love Los Angeles, which includes artists like Ducks LTD, Shannon Lay, and Kevin Devine.   Stay tuned for more to come from The Album Leaf. Now based in LA, Jimmy LaValle started out in the San Diego music scene creating vivid, rhythmic, soaring instrumentals centered around the Rhodes piano. With over two decades of acclaimed releases (for Sub Pop, City Slang, and others) and numerous collaborations with artists and brands, he has become a touchstone for the next generation’s wave of melodic and meditative electro-organic music.   A prolific musician, he has also composed music for film and television, scoring over 20 projects, including award-winning films, the Calm App, Netflix shows, and commercials for companies like Nike and Google.
