Power pop savant Richard X. Heyman releasing 13th album Pop Circles

Always a great day when there is news of another Richard X. Heyman release on the way...

Pop Circles is the 13th solo outing from NYC-based power-pop savant Richard X. Heyman. He produced the set at Eastside Sound in New York and the Kit Factory, his home studio. Special guests include cellist Julia Kent (Rasputina) and Chris Jenkins on viola. Pop Circles is being released by Turn-Up Records June 14.

Recording sessions for the new album began at Eastside tracking drums, then moved to Heyman's home studio. He laid down keys, percussion, a bit of bass and layer upon layer of lustrous, ringing rhythm and lead guitar parts with his collection of vintage instruments: Rickenbacker 360 12-string, PRS Starla, Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster, Dan Electro baritone Martin Shenandoah acoustic and D-28, and Yamaha acoustic 12-string. The bulk of bass duties fell to his wife Nancy Leigh and the sumptuous string parts were performed by Kent and Jenkins.

 

Richard was one of the first "one man band" recording artists to emerge along with Paul McCartney, Emitt Rhodes and Todd Rundgren. Critical praise began with the release of his first album Living Room!! which Rolling Stone magazine proclaimed "an undiscovered treasure." All Music Guide later called him "perhaps America's greatest unsung hero of power pop, a songwriter of uncommon talent and intelligence and a one-man rock band without peer;" the Hartford Courant proclaimed him to be "a true heir to [Brian] Wilson's mantle, amid an ocean of pretenders;" and the Chicago Tribune observed, "Heyman creates something fresh from his influences rather than parroting them." David Wild writing in Rolling Stone praised him saying, "rock'n'roll doesn't get any better than this."

 

In recent years, Heyman has juggled his own work with his activities as a member of the reactivated Doughboys, who first reunited in 2000 to play at his surprise birthday party, and have remained productive ever since, delivering a quintet of well-received albums - Is It Now?, Act Your Rage, Shakin' Our Souls, Hot Beat Stew and Front Street Rebels. Their song Why Can't She See Me? (written by RXH) was chosen #3 Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage Sirius XM channel at the time of its release. Five of the songs on Pop Circles are his versions of tunes originally recorded by the band.

 

The lifelong passion for music is what's driven Heyman since his days growing up in Plainfield, New Jersey. He began playing drums at the age of seven and was proficient on guitar and piano by his teens. By then, he had already begun writing songs. He has developed a versatile singing voice, which can range from sweet crooning balladeering to balls-to-the-wall rock'n'roll wailing.

RXH was still in junior high school when he achieved his first taste of rock 'n' roll notoriety as drummer with fabled garage band The Doughboys, whose raucous live sets won them a rabid following in the New York/New Jersey area during the second half of the 1960s. The Doughboys recorded a pair of singles for the Bell label, made multiple appearances on the local TV show Disc-O-Teen (emceed by legendary horror-show host Zacherle), shared stages with the likes of the Beach Boys, the Buckinghams, Neil Diamond and the Syndicate of Sound, and served as the house band at the Café Wha? in Greenwich Village during the summer of 1968.

 

By the time Heyman reemerged as a solo artist in the late 1980s, he'd matured into a singularly distinctive songwriter with an uncanny ability to channel his vintage rock 'n' roll influences into tunes that are both infectiously catchy and emotionally resonant. Those qualities were prominent on his self-released, home-recorded efforts Actual Size and Living Room!! Both generated considerable critical positive press and music-industry word of mouth, leading to a major-label deal with Sire/Warner Bros., which released the widely acclaimed Hey Man! in 1991.

 

Recording for a corporate label helped to win RXH a wider audience and a higher media profile. But it also proved to be a frustrating experience, and it wasn't long before he was back in indie territory, making and releasing his music on his own terms. His subsequent albums Cornerstone, Basic Glee, Rightovers, Actual Sighs, Intakes, Tiers/And Other Stories, X, Y, Incognito and the reimagining of Hey Man!appropriately entitled Yeh Man!, as well as the EP Heyman, Hoosier and Herman (with guest vocalist Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits) chronicled his ongoing musical evolution to name but a few. Heyman also found time to release the career-spanning video retrospective X-Posures, and to pen the vivid rock 'n' roll memoir Boom Harangue.

 

Besides working as a solo artist and with the Doughboys RXH has performed with a wide array of other artists over the years, including several of musical heroes. He's played drums behind Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson, seminal guitar icon Link Wray, Left Banke leader Michael Brown and beloved indie troubadour Jonathan Richman. He also served as guitarist in Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss' band during her recent comeback and played keyboards with soul legend Ben E. King.

Featured on the record is a song with Beck, entitled “Night Running,” and today they debut its music videodirected by Jennifer Juniper Stratford. “For ‘Night Running,’ I wanted to create a realm where a super computer that hosts a simulation program creates a series artificial worlds,” said Stratford. “While Beck would appear to live within the software as a master control, Matt would be transported to different worlds and new identities leaving him to question what is real.”

there is no Other, the new album by Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi, is out today on Nonesuch. Tracing the overlooked movement of sounds from Africa and the Arabic world and their influence on European and American music, there is no Other illuminates the universality of music and the commonality of the human experience. The album has received critical praise and later today the New Yorker Radio Hour will air an interview and performance with Rhiannon and Francesco. Over the past week the duo has visited WNYC, WFUV, Sirius, and NPR’s World Café for interviews and performance segments; stay tuned for run dates. 

 

Giddens and Turrisi will perform there is no Other on an extensive fall tour that includes the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC on October 4 and at Pico Union in Los Angeles on October 19. A European tour for November-December was announced this morning. Full itinerary is below.

 

Produced by Joe Henry and tracked over an intensely productive five day period in Dublin, Ireland, there is no Other is at once a condemnation of “othering” and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. It primarily features only Giddens and Turrisi playing one or two instruments together. The album comprises a mix of original songs penned by Giddens and a diverse set of interpretations ranging from Ola Belle Reed’s “I’m Gonna Write Me a Letter” and Oscar Brown, Jr’s “Brown Baby” to the Italian traditional “Pizzica di San Vito” to the aria “Black Swan” by Gian-Carlo Menotti.

In addition to the release of there is no Other, Giddens will be joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra on May 22nd and 23rd for a pair of performances, and on May 24thand 25th she will curate concerts that highlight the great black composers who have been hiding in plain sight, featuring Lara Downes and Darius de Haas. She also appears in Ken Burns' upcoming Country Music series airing in September on PBS, revealing the lesser-known black roots of country music.   The vinyl edition of the album is available for preorder at the Nonesuch store. The two-LP set includes four previously unreleased songs, along with expanded notes about the album written by Rhiannon.

This new edition picks up where the previous one left off and adds songs from Campbell’s thrilling late-career renaissance to paint a complete picture of his peerless and pioneering catalog. Now included are songs from his string of acclaimed albums of the aughts – 2008’s Meet Glen Campbell, 2011’s Ghost On The Canvas, 2014’s soundtrack to his revealing and emotional documentary, Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, and 2017’s Adiós, released shortly before he passed away from complications from his long, public battle with Alzheimer’s. This beautiful box set includes a stunning 60-page booklet and updated liner notes by well-known music scribe Joel Selvin who wrote the original liners.

Opening with “Turn Around, Look At Me,” Campbell’s first single released in 1961 shortly after he moved to Los Angeles from Albuquerque to break into the music business, Glen Campbell – The Legacy [1961-2017]includes songs from nearly all of the sixty plus album’s he released in his lifetime, providing an outstanding overview of this influential, rare talent.

The collection traces his extraordinary evolution from his earliest days with songs like the bluegrass tune“Kentucky Means Paradise,” the honky-tonk oldie “Too Late To Worry – Too Blue To Cry,”  Buffy St. Marie’s protest anthem “Universal Soldier” and “Guess I’m Dumb,” written and produced by his friend Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys who Campbell substituted for on tour when Wilson bowed out, to his first works with producer Al De Lory, who helped him hone his signature sound with the song that would kickstart his recording career and put him on the map: the 1967 John Hartford-penned masterpiece “Gentle On My Mind.” As Joel Selvin writes in his illuminating liner notes, “Despite a modest chart performance, ‘Gentle On My Mind’ did turn out to be the definitive record of Campbell’s career, the point where he not only took charge of his own artistic destiny but became his own creation.”

Campbell, who was concurrently also a first-call session musician recording with the likes of The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Simon & Garfunkel, The Righteous Brothers, Merle Haggard and so many more as part of The Wrecking Crew, followed the hit with a song that would end up being a turning point for him.“By The Time I Get To Phoenix” both introduced a new lush sound for Campbell and a little known songwriter from Oklahoma named Jimmy Webb. The song, which along with “Gentle On My Mind,” helped him make history at the 1967 GRAMMY® Awards by sweeping the song and performance awards in both the pop and country and western categories, was a crossover success that spent an incredible six months on the charts and catapulted Campbell to fame. It also began a fruitful lifelong partnership between the musician and songwriter that would last more than five decades and include some of Campbell’s biggest hits such as “Wichita Lineman”and “Galveston,” which kicks off disc two.

The late ‘60s and early ‘70s were especially prolific for Campbell who, in between starring in his hit TV show“The Glen Campbell Good Time Hour” and becoming a movie star opposite John Wayne in the western“True Grit” (of which he recorded the Oscar-nominated theme song) and his feature film follow-up, “Norwood,”released four albums in 1970 and three more the following year. The Legacy collection includes many of the tracks released during this period including Webb’s “Where’s The Playground Susie,” and “MacArthur Park,”"I Wanna Live” (a number one country hit), and several songs recorded with labelmate Bobbie Gentryincluding “Let It Be Me,” Scarborough Fair/Canticle,” and the Everly Brothers hit, “All I Have To Do Is Dream.” There’s also Campbell’s version of Roy Orbison’s “Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream),” the sweeping Gordon Lightfoot-penned title track from his album “The Last Time I Saw Her” and a medley withAnne Murray of “I Say A Little Prayer/By The Time I Get To Phoenix.”

The second half of the box set features Campbell’s trademark song “Rhinestone Cowboy,” which earned him his first number one record and became his theme in many ways, and his sprightly spin on Allen Toussaint’s “Southern Nights.” More than four decades later Campbell’s rendition of “Southern Nights” would prominently feature in the film and soundtrack to “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2” introducing a whole new generation to his music. Other highlights include “God Only Knows,” Campbell’s beautiful take on Brian Wilson’s opus,“Sunflower,” a breezy #1 hit written by Neil Diamond and “Highwayman,” which eight years after recording the Jimmy Webb song, Campbell would introduce to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. They not only used the name for their supergroup but also won a GRAMMY®.

The final disc of the collection, which includes Campbell showcasing his love for gospel and his faith with a stirring live rendition of “Amazing Grace,” and flexing his incredible guitar skills on “Classical Gas,” has been expanded to include songs from his albums released in the 2000s. Included from his acclaimed 2008 album,Meet Glen Campbell, which saw the icon tackle contemporary and classic songs, is his inspired covers of theFoo Fighters “Times Like These,” Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” and Jackson Browne’s “These Days.” 2011’s Ghost On The Canvas is represented with a spirited take on the Paul Westerberg song of the same name while 2013’s See You There is represented with “Waiting On The Comin’ Of My Lord.”

The last song Campbell ever recorded was “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” This touching goodbye to his family and fans co-written by him and producer Julian Raymond and recorded with members of The Wrecking Crew, is one of the many high points that round out the box set. The song featured in the documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” which chronicles Campbell’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and his final tour, won the GRAMMY® Award for Best Country Song and was nominated for Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards. The retrospective culminates with three songs from Campbell’s bucket list album Adiós, recorded while fighting his disease and released in 2017 to universal acclaim: a banjo-filled take on “Everybody’s Talkin,’” country weeper “It Won’t Bring Her Back” and the bittersweet title track, which brought Campbell’s career full circle by reuniting him one last time with his lifelong collaborator Jimmy Webb.
