Marillion set to release nine classic tracks re-imagined via 'With Friends From The Orchestra' on Nov. 29, 2019

I know many of my American friends are not familiar with British rock band Marillion, a great and ambitious troupe that has a long and rich legacy. Here is news on the band's next project...

'With Friends From The Orchestra' available on Friday, November 29, 2019

Earlier this year, Marillion entered the studio with the intention to record selected songs from their rich catalogue along with friends from the orchestra.

Recorded at The Racket Club and Peter Gabriel‘s Real World Studios, and with a running time of almost 80 minutes, With Friends From The Orchestra features nine classic Marillion tracks re-imagined and accompanied by the In Praise Of Folly String Quartet with Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute).

Marillion explain:

“So our brilliant producer and collaborator Michael Hunter wrote some new string arrangements and we took a week out to go to Real World Studios and record with our friends. The result has exceeded our expectations, is indeed a thing of beauty.

We hope you enjoy the songs and agree with us that some of them are actually better than the originals(!). Whether or not you agree with that bold statement we’re sure this work will move you.”

Estonia,” originally from 1997’s album This Strange Engine and the first song to be revealed from the album, gives a first insight into the hauntingly beautiful and touching versions of some of the band’s most beloved songs.

The official video grants an exclusive peak behind the scenes of the album recording sessions and can be watched on Marillion’s official Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/c1UEHTMHkxM

New Music Roundup: The Cure, Big Star, Fastball, elbow

A sure-fire selection of fantastic new releases includes titles featuring The Cure, Big Star, Fastball and elbow are worth discovering.

Artist: The Cure
Title: 40 Live Curaetion  25 + Anniversary (Eagle Rock)
You might like if you enjoy: The Cure, The Church, Interpol
Tell me more: The Cure celebrated the band's 40th anniversary last year with a series of special concerts, several of which are celebrated in their entirety on the newly-released 40 Live Curaetion  25 + Anniversary, a two-disc Blu-ray (the title is also available as a Limited Edition Deluxe Box). Each of the concert films on the set stands alone and distinctive form the other. The first film, "Curaetion 25: From There To Here / From Here To There" was filmed on the tenth and final night of the 25th Meltdown Festival at London's Royal Festival Hall on June 24, 2018. Directed by Nick Wickhamthe Cure (singer-guitarist Robert Smith, bassist Simon Gallup, drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell, guitarist Reeves Gabrels) performed a song from each of their 13 studio albums in chronological order, the idea being to showcase the evolution of the Cure's sound from 1978 to 2018. The band then performed two unreleased songs from 2018, and then journeyed backward to play an equal number of tracks and ending with a song from 1979. Directed by Tim Pope, "Anniversary: 1978-2018 Live In Hyde Park London" features The Cure's complete 29-song, 135-minute concert in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 65,000

All of the band's best-known songs are covered across the two full-length concert films. Early-era favorites "10:15 Saturday Night," "Jumping Someone Else's Train," "A Forest" and "Boys Don't Cry" are here along the British band's best-known radio hits ("Just Like Heaven," "Friday I'm In Love," "Why Can't I Be You," "Lovesong"). But more than any single song or moment, it is the depth, range and sweeping power displayed both marathon-length performances that impress to be sure; the concept-winning visuals and amazing immersive audio quality add to the experience across the two concerts. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Big Star
Title: In Space (Omnivore Recordings)
You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, The Replacements, The Box Tops
Tell me more: Big Star's enduring legacy has long been certified in the rock 'n' roll universe but it sure doesn't hurt to have the band's final studio album reissued via an expanded and glorious edition sure to please followers of the groundbreaking power pop heroes. Through a series of unfortunate series of events and ill-fated timing, the Memphis-spawned outfit's first three albums released in the 1970s failed to make an impactful commercial mark even while ultimately consistently landing on many rock aficionados "best of all time" lists. Few fans were anticipating the release of In Space in September 2005, a full-length studio LP featuring original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens joined by the Posies' Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow. Omnivore Recordings' 2019 remastered reissue of the album casts a spectacular and well-deserved spotlight on In Space"with the release featuring all dozen original tracks (10 originals, a soulful cover of The Olympics' "Mine Exclusively" and French Baroque composer Georg Muffat's "Aria, Largo"), as well as six bonus tracks. There are a slew of wonderful tracks on "In Space," notably the melodic opener "Dony," the enticing "Lady Sweet," the Beatlesque "Best Chance," the shimmering "February's Quiet" and the reflective "Hung Up With Summer." Notable among the bonus tracks is the soulful rocker "Hot Thing" (previously only available on the out-of-print "Big Star Story") and an acapella version of "Turn My Back on the Sun." In Space is set for release on Oct. 25; the reissue will be available on audio CD as well on translucent blue vinyl. Additionally, there are liner notes shedding all kinds of details on this important release. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Artist: Fastball
Title: The Help Machine (33 1/3 Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Big Star, Del Amitri, Dada
Tell me more: One of the year's best new albums, Fastball's The Help Machine exudes a sonic landscape created with melodic song craft, nuanced arrangements, artful vocal harmonies and the talents of the band's all original lineup of Tony Scalzo (lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Miles Zuniga (lead vocals, guitar), and Joey Shuffield (drums, percussion). Anyone who loved the trio's seminal 1998 album All the Pain Money Can Buy (which featured the Grammy-nominated hit "The Way") will find plenty to love across the Austin, Texas-based band's seventh album. The ambitious genre-defying title track, elegant "Friend or Foe," rootsy "The Devil's Hand," gospel-tinged blues of "Redeemed" infectious confessional rocker "All Gone Fuzzy" and forceful "Doesn't It Make You Feel Small" are among the far-flung tracks that shine on "The Help Machine." Information: FastballTheBand.com.

Artist: elbow
Title: Giants Of All Sizes (Polydor/The Verve Label Group)
You might like if you enjoy: elbow, Peter Gabriel, Porcupine Tree
Tell me more: Since I discovered elbow at Coachella in April 2011, I've continued to be impressed and dazzled by the Manchester, England-based band that blends the best of alternative and progressive rock styles into a sound that is their own. elbow  led by singer-songwriter Guy Garvey – has made a deeply personal and poignant album (the newly-issued Giants Of All Sizes) in tune with this moment in time. The luxurious and adventuresome seven-minute lead track "Dexter & Sinister" finds Garvey singing powerfully amidst middle age and mortality: "Loss is a part of life this long / But Dexter & Sinister / I've the heaviest heart jackhammering inside me / And I don't know Jesus anymore." The disc's second track, the beguiling "Seven Veils," takes aim at romantic disintegration: "There's no roses in this garden / No sun melting in the sea." Elsewhere, there is a wake for civilization via the soaring "Empires," a pulsating rock meets symphonic moodscape lures the listener across "White Noise White Heat," while "My Trouble" explores romantic loss with naked command. The dynamic and musically rich arrangements and use of diverse instrumentation make for an involving and rewarding listen throughout Giants Of All Sizes. elbow has several upcoming January 2020 concert dates in Southern California, including at House of Blues in San Diego, The Wiltern in Los Angeles and The Observatory in Santa Ana.  Information: www.elbow.co.uk.

Essential New Music Documentaries from Cleopatra Entertainment

Some pretty cool news courtesy of the folks at MVD Entertainment Group...

via MVD Entertainment Group

The Life and Times of Steve Marriott is a compelling documentary about one of rock's most dynamic, exciting, and sadly; unsung heroes of rock and roll. Showcasing revelatory interviews with Humble Pie's Peter Frampton, Jerry Shirley, and Greg Ridley, the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson, Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, John Waite, Bad Company/Free drummer Simon Kirke, Quiet Riot's Kevin Dubrow, Ricky Byrd and Marriott historian John Heller among others, the documentary vividly tells the tale of Steve's tragically short life via the use of previously unseen photos, memorabilia, and home movies. Rare fiery performance footage of The Small Faces and Humble Pie frames the action, drawing the viewer closer to this wonderful and underrated artist.

Come On Feel The Noize: The Story Of How Rock Became Metal features exclusive, long-lost live material from rock's most iconic bands and artists, as well as all-new original interviews with the living legends themselves. This film is an access-all-areas backstage pass to Heavy Metal and Hard Rock history. Delve into the rich history of Heavy Metal: from its scandalous origins in the 1960s to its heyday in the 1980s, from its glam phase in the 1970s to its indestructible present in 2017. A backstage pass into the history of how Rock became Heavy Metal.

Melody Makers is a stunning, award winning film that goes behind the scenes to explode the myths, honor the legends, and reveal the incredible stories and never-before-seen photographs of rock giants like Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Ray Davies, Frank Zappa, Patti Smith and many, many others. This tell-all reveals anecdotes and unpublished photos from the world's most influential music publication, Melody Maker magazine with its intimate access to legendary rock bands including The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Animals and on and on. At the heart of this film is Melody Maker's head photographer, Barrie Wentzell who takes us along on an intimate journey with his colleagues into the world of rock icons. These journalists, with cameras in hand, had free rein and were creatively involved with the artists, something unheard of today. The film captures this unique period telling the story behind the magazine's rise and fall, showing first hand how the artists, the record companies and journalists came to move a generation. The magazine was a "must read" during its time, now the movie is a "must see" for musicians, music fans and photo buffs alike!

-----------------------------------

As they lead the charge for this week’s Number 1 spot in the UK (set to be their third consecutive U.K Number 1 album), British band elbow has announced they will be returning to North America in January 2020 for a handful of west coast dates in California. Starting on January 18, they will be kicking things off at the House of Blues in San Diego then making stops at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, Fox Theatre in Oakland and The Observatory in Santa Ana. Local pre-sales start Thursday, October 17 at 10AM PT. General on-sale starts Friday, October 18 at 10AM PT. For more information, go to: www.elbow.co.uk

Last Friday, elbow released their eighth studio album ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ (Polydor/The Verve Label Group), to vast critical acclaim across the globe. Praised as "rich, expansive and inventive" by NPR who spoke to lead-man and lyricist Guy Garvey on All Things Considered recently [Listen HERE], this remarkable full-length continues to hold the Manchester four-piece well and truly at the top of their game and dear in the hearts of fans all over the world. Listen to ‘Giants of all Sizes’ HERE.

Giants of All Sizes’ was recorded at Hamburg’s Clouds Hill StudioThe Dairy in Brixton, 604 Studios in Vancouver and Blueprint Studios in Salford, with additional recording taking place at various band member’s home studios in Manchester. Lead singer and lyricist Guy Garvey describes the album as “an angry, old blue lament which finds its salvation in family, friends, the band and new life.” It is a record that lyrically takes in moments of deep personal loss whilst reflecting its times by confronting head-on, the specters of injustice and division not just in the UK but across the world. It is a record that could only have been made in the 21st Century.

Given such bleak, if ultimately redeemed subject matter, it is also perversely the most relaxed record which elbow have made in some time. On ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ each band member extended their usual process of working on demos alone and followed their vision to its conclusion rather than, as Craig Potter puts it, ‘taking the edges off things to find compromise’. In tandem with this, they returned to playing live in the studio, encouraged to experiment with the banks of analogue equipment at Clouds Hill in Northern Germany, giving songs a looser, more live feel.

The result is the most starkly dynamic record from the band in recent times, “sonically unabashed”, as Guy would have it. Whilst album closer ‘Weightless’ has the gossamer melodies and communal harmonies for which the band have latterly been known, this album echoes earlier elbow work at times whilst also breaking new ground.

‘White Noise White Heat’ is motorik, metal machine soul driven by a vocal that is rage incarnate, ‘Doldrums’ mixes John Carpenter with The Plastic Ono Band to brilliantly disturbing effect and ‘On Deronda Road’hitches stark bass beats and glitches to an ad-hoc choir. ‘Empires’ delivers dark resignation via an insidious melody and ‘Seven Veils’ continues the subversion by inverting the perception of elbow as a band for lovers into a band for haters, a double-barreled fuck-you song par excellence.  ‘The Delayed 3:15’ marries mariachi guitars to jazz dynamics, Morricone via Buddy Rich, and ‘My Trouble’ is a clockwork, analogue shuffle housing a delicate melody that builds over the course of the song into a fragile monolith to the power of love.

Lead track, ‘Dexter & Sinister’, released on 10” ahead of the album, encapsulates the whole album. A seven-minute musical journey that blends deep bass grooves, sudden keyboard stabs, dislocated piano and guitar runs and soul stylings then abruptly shifts gear, parts the storm clouds and takes wing, flying towards the heat of the sun. It is the soundtrack for these ‘hope free, faith free, charity free days’, a denial of the divine and a reconciliation, two songs in one song, two emotions for one emotion, human, fragile and brilliant, like the album which it opens.

As with their previous four studio albums, ‘Giants Of All Sizes’ was produced and mixed by keyboard player Craig Potter. Guests across the album include Jesca HoopThe Plumedores and South London newcomer Chilli Chilton.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

The nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2020 have just been announced.

On first view, I would love to see Depeche Mode, Todd Rundgren, Kraftwerk and the Dave Matthews Band get in next year.

Rundgren, Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode have been previously nominated, and all three are totally deserving of the honor.

Other nominees that deserve to get in now, or at a later date include T. Rex, Nine Inch Nails and Thin Lizzy.

What are your thoughts?
