Darkroom/Interscope Records artist Billie Eilish has released her highly anticipated debut album, accompanied with a brand new music video for her latest single ‘bad guy,’ out today.
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? Is out now on all platforms worldwide and features global smashes “bury a friend,” “you should see me in a crown,” “when the party’s over,” and “wish you were gay,” plus 10 previously unheard tracks including Billie’s latest single “bad guy,” which comes with an official video, directed by MTV VMA-winner (Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’) Dave Meyers.
Watch the official video for “bad guy” HERE.
Yesterday, Billie Eilish made her Jimmy Kimmel Live! debut and performed “bury a friend” in-front of a live audience. On Monday, April 1 she will be a talking guest performing live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (check your local listings).
This weekend, in partnership with Spotify, and curated entirely by the 17-year-old artist, The Billie Eilish Experience boasts a fully immersive, highly visceral “enhanced album experience.” The labyrinth of rooms hosted at The Stalls at Skylight Row in Downtown Los Angeles will converge art, technology and the unexpected, creating a cerebral storytelling experience that is authentically Billie Eilish. Listen to the Billie Eilish Experience Playlist on Spotify HERE.
In other news, Billie Eilish shattered Apple Music’s record, amassing more than 800,000 Pre-Adds on the album. Listen to the album on Apple Music HERE.
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? comprises of fourteen tracks that materialize as ghostly genre-less pop projections of life’s firsts for the multi-platinum songstress as she ruminates on her first brushes with loss and love amidst the monsters under her bed and the triumphs at her feet.
“Nobody knows what the fuck dreams are, dude,” she exclaims. “You can’t give me a good enough answer as to what dreams are. Nobody can. Dreams are a big thing in my life though. They’ve always really occupied me. It’s all in the music.” One daydream manifested to set the stage for such provocation. Within three years since her 2015 debut, Billie quietly, yet unapologetically infiltrated the forefront of pop. Along the way, she and her chief collaborator, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and big brother Finneas O’Connell crafted what would become WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO? Keeping the creativity in-house, literally, they retreated back to Billie’s childhood home. Once again, they worked in Finneas’ bedroom—two feet from Billie’s room—where the songs not only came to life, but also all of the dreams. “There were a lot of opportunities and things I said, ‘No to,” she grins. “We had to do this album our way. I realized how lucky I am to have my brother in this. If I didn’t have him, I would have to figure out what the hell I was doing without someone else there with me!”
"I want people to listen,” she leaves off. “I want to be heard, and I want people to feel heard. Nothing on this album sounds the same, but it all adds up to a whole. Since I first started doing music, my life has changed a lot. One thing that hasn’t changed in my music is that I still just do me.”
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is out everywhere now.

Keane set to return with new album; announces tour dates!
This news definitely made my day. It is wonderful that one of England's greatest musical exports of the 21st century is set to return. I first caught Keane on the main stage at Coachella in April 2005 and was immediately floored; I purchased their debut album 'Hopes and Fears' the next day! Read my review of the band's 2009 concert in Anaheim here. I last caught Keane in concert in early 2013; read a short recap of that event here.

'Begin the Begin: R.E.M.'s Early Years' coming on May 14, 2019
While it doesn't seem likely that R.E.M. will ever perform together again, it's great that new details about the groundbreaking American rock troupe continue to come to light. I read the excerpt of 'Begin the Begin: R.E.M.'s Early Years' and the book promises to provide fans of the group with plenty of cool insight...Robert Kinsler

Begin the Begin: R.E.M.'s Early Years
Coming via Verse Chorus Press on May 14
Excerpt HERE courtesy of Dangerous Minds
Begin the Begin is the first biography of R.E.M. wholly researched and written since they disbanded in 2011. It offers by far the most detailed account of the group's formative years--their early lives, their first encounters with one another, their legendary debut show, early tours in the back of a van, initial recordings, their shrewdly paced rise to fame.
The people and places of the American South are crucial to the R.E.M. story in ways much more complex and interesting than have previously been presented, claims Robert Dean Lurie; he explores the myriad ways in which the band's adopted hometown of Athens, Georgia--and the South in general--shaped its members and the character of their art. The South is much more than the background here; it plays a major role: the creative ferment that erupted in Athens and gripped many of its young inhabitants in the late 1970s and early '80s drew on regional traditions of outsider art and general cultural out-thereness, and gave rise to a free-spirited music scene that produced the B-52's and Pylon, as well as laying the ground for R.E.M.'s subsequent breakout success.

Lurie has tracked down and interviewed numerous figures in the band's history who were underrepresented in, or absent from, earlier biographies--they contribute previously undocumented stories and cast a fresh light on the familiar narrative.
Advance Praise for Begin the Begin:
"Meticulously researched and always elegantly written, Begin the Begin is a critical but glorious tribute to its subject."
--Christopher Sandford, author of Bowie: Loving the Alien
"Hope, yearning, and fear are visceral here, and the portrait painted is of something joyous, mad, and brilliant all at once."
--David Guterson, author of Snow Falling on Cedars
"This beautiful, joyful book is more than a biography--it's a deep exploration of art and its bloody relationship with business, a meditation on the South, on youth and love, on family and fame, and an intelligent return to the soundtrack of the 1980s."
--Rebecca Lee, author of Bobcat and Other Stories

Record Store Day Preview
Music lovers will want to start making plans to get select, one-of-a-kind titles being released from the far-flung likes of Pearl Jam, U2, Courtney Barnett, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Weezer and Elvis Costello on Record Store Day on Saturday, April 13.
Concertgoers lucky enough to be at Coachella on April 13 can hit the air conditioned pop-up record shop on the Empire Polo Club festival groups that will be carrying Record Store Day exclusives along with new releases from Coachellafest artists (this writer was fortunate to pick up an autographed Gary Clark Jr. audio CD when the emerging artist performed there for the first time in April 2012). There will also be 30,000 vintage releases in the store, all curated by Coachella staff. Additionally, there will be merchandise like tees and totes that can only be purchased on that date.
Here is a roundup of some of the high-profile releases available on Record Store Day.
Blues harmonica legend James Cotton (who passed away in 2017) will be celebrated via Late Night Blues (Live At The New Penelope Café), captured in Montreal, Canada back in 1967. Being released on vinyl for the first-time ever, all 14 tracks of the recording reportedly feature Cotton's incredible talents on the blues harp.
Michigan-spawned rockers Greta Van Fleet's outstanding 2017 LP From the Fires will appear on vinyl for the first time.
Pearl Jam's live performance at Seattle's Easy Street Records shop in 2005 will be released on vinyl for the first time.
Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett will issue a new single titled "Everybody Here Hates You"; the release features hand-illustrated artwork by the artist. The 12-inch vinyl is limited to only 2,000 copies.

Coachella-bound Weezer will be featured on the RSD exclusive Dusty Gems and Raw Nuggets, a collection of rarities housed on limited-edition vinyl.
On a related note, April 13 will see the release of Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Weezer. The latest in CMH Label Group's Rockabye Baby series aimed at little listeners, parents and tots can check out re-imagined classics such as "Island in the Sun," "Beverly Hills," "Buddy Holly" and "Undone - the Sweater Song."
Elvis Costello & the Imposters' Purse EP is essential for fans of the songwriting great; the title collects songs that Costello wrote with Burt Bacharach, Sir Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan.

One of the most important releases coming on RSD arrives via Yep Roc Records, which is issuing a new disc from The Minus 5, the aptly-titled Stroke Manor. In November 2017, musician Scott McCaughey was nearly killed after suffering a stroke that also wiped out his musical memory (he was a member of the Minus 5 and long-time touring member of R.E.M.). While still in the Intensive Care Unit he began writing down thoughts that came into his mind; those stream-of-mind thoughts jotted down onto a notebook anchor "Stroke Manor," which will be issued on both audio CD (2,500 copies worldwide) and vinyl (2,000 copies). The disc features contributions from Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Corin Tucker, Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and others.
Omnivore Recordings is issuing four eagerly-anticipated titles on vinyl for RSD. I Don't Like the Way This World's A-Treatin' Me is a four-song tribute to Woody Guthrie. Pioneering L.A. Americana troupe Lone Justice's previously-unreleased Live at the Palomino, 1983 should generate renewed interest in the groundbreaking group (read my review of the group's 2018 release The Western Tapes, 1983 here). Culture's The Nighthawk Recordings is a seven-song EP featuring four unreleased songs; Dennis Quaid & the Sharks' terrific 2017 album Out of the Box (you can read my recent review of Quaid and company's album here) rounds out the list.
Island Records, Interscope and UMC have also announced that U2: The Europa EP, a new 3-track EP, will be released on April 13. The Europa EP: Side A features an exclusive new mix of previously unreleased material from U2's recent eXPERIENCE +iNNOCENCE Tour: Charlie Chaplin's electrifying speech from the movie The Great Dictator (1940) underscored with a mash-up of Songs Of Experience album track “Love Is All We Have Left” and 1993 classic “Zooropa,” leading into a performance of “New Year’s Day” recorded live in Dublin, Ireland on Nov. 5, 2018.
Side B is comprised of two "Euro"-tinged remixes: St. Francis Hotel's mix of the original album version of "New Year's Day" and Jon Pleased Wimmin's Euromantic mix of "Love Is All We Have Left."
The EP cover art (seen on the right) is a Chaplinesque homage to the Europe-themed artwork of U2's 1993 album Zoorapa and features the figure 130, in celebration of Chaplin's 130th birthday which falls of April 16, 2019.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will use the occasion to release their Wait and Return EP — a special remix collection of tracks which will be released exclusively for Record Store Day 2019.
Released as a limited edition 12” pressed on teal-colored vinyl with new sleeve artwork by Gareth Halliday, it will feature three new remixes of tracks taken from the #1 UK album, Who Built the Moon? London-based French DJ/producer Nicolas Laugier, aka The Reflex, provides remixes of “She Taught Me How to Fly” and “Keep on Reaching,” while British artist Richard Norris reworks “Black & White Sunshine.” The forthcoming release follows the huge success of last year’s 12” of “It’s a Beautiful World,” which was the UK's biggest-selling vinyl single of 2018.
The full track-listing for the Record Store Day exclusive vinyl is:
A1. ‘She Taught Me How To Fly’ (The Reflex Revision)
A2. ‘Keep On Reaching’ (The Reflex Revision)
B1. ‘Black & White Sunshine’ (Richard Norris Remix)
Noel says: “I love Record Store Day. It gives us, the artists, a chance to put music out there that otherwise might never see the light of day. I love the fact that the items are very limited edition and I do utter the phrase ‘I’ll save that for Record Store Day’ a LOT.'”
“She Taught Me How To Fly” was the third single to be taken from the album Who Built the Moon?, which also features the other tracks remixed on the EP. The album debuted in the UK at #1, achieving gold certification in less than two weeks after its release— making it a hat-trick of #1 UK albums for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. The Mercury-nominated Who Built the Moon? was also a record-breaking 10th consecutive chart-topping studio album in the UK For Noel— no other artist has achieved such a feat.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds recently announced new UK tour dates for summer 2019 with support from Gaz Coombes— with all shows now sold out. The 11-piece line-up will perform in more intimate venues in Edinburgh, Llandudno, Hull, and— for the first time ever for Noel—The London Palladium in May. With Noel currently recording new material in studios in London and LA, the shows are a chance for fans to potentially hear the new material for the very first time.

Mark Farner thrills faithful with classic rock favorites
Mark Farner's American Band
With: 7Horse
Where: The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA
When: Sunday, March 24, 2019
Walking around the legendary Coach House on Sunday night, I took some time to soak in the sight of some of the hundreds of signed photos of artists who have played at the venue over the past 30 years. Dick Dale – who passed away at the age of 81 on March 16 – is the latest of the countless notables whose pictures line the walls of the Coach House who are gone.
Flint, Michigan-spawned rocker Mark Farner was the headliner this night and his inspired performance was a powerful reminder that legendary artists are worth catching whenever possible (Farner had a pacemaker installed earlier this decade). The former lead singer and lead guitarist for '70s hitmakers Grand Funk Railroad, Farner and his excellent two-man backing band delivered a stellar 100-minute acoustic set that hit all the high points with the near-capacity crowd.
To be sure many came to hear the hits that were a part of their formative years, but were also surely impressed that the 70-year-old Farner has the energy, vocal range and sharp guitar chops of a musician half his age.
Opening with the apt cut "Are You Ready," Farner played the first of may snappy guitar solos that would bolster the set.
"Thank you! It's good to be back here," Farner said after the audience greeted the opening number with loud cheers and strong applause.
The next song, "Aimless Lady," found Farner pushing his talents even higher. This was a night where Farner would perform memorable versions of some of his best-known Grand Funk Railroad songs, and also share magical stories of his early days including fascinating tales of hanging out with Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King and Janis Joplin.
Among the early standouts of the set were the blues-heavy "Mr. Pretty Boy," classic rock-styled "Little Johnny Hooker," infectious "Hooked on Love" and jazzy-rocker "Creepin'," the latter which featured Farner masterfully working his Korg keyboards.
Of course the night's biggest songs were still to come, including a shimmering power-pop worthy take on "Bad Time," a joyful clap-along of "The Loco-Motion," soulful version of "Some Kind of Wonderful" and chilling home run with the night-ending "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)." And throughout the entire show, Farner displayed a genuine sense of fun – something that is all too rare at rock shows nowadays.
Opening the concert was the blues-rock bending powerhouse trio 7Horse. Comprised of dada's Joie Calio (guitar, vocals) and Phil Leavitt (percussion, vocals) and Michael "MK" Kelly (bass, vocals), the group's razor-sharp songs and performance quickly won over the crowd.
"Low Fuel Drug Run" opened 7Horse's 45-minute epic outing; the crowd were rewarded with an intoxicating track best described as having a driving rhythm, searing slide work and sublime harmonies.
Other great originals included the melodic "Two-Stroke Machine," spirited "All My Friends (Hate Me in the End)," a cover of Johnny Cash's "Man in Black" and the ferocious set-capping "Meth Lab Zoso Sticker" (the latter featured in director Martin Scorsese's film The Wolf of Wall Street.
