Blu-ray Roundup: Peter Gabriel's 'Taking The Pulse' and the original dance show 'Message In A Bottle' based on the songs of Sting

In this column I review two newly-issued Blu-ray releases.

Artist:
Peter Gabriel
Title: Taking The Pulse (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, elbow
Tell me more:
Peter Gabriel's "Taking The Pulse" is an ambitious concert film that finds the groundbreaking English. artist and the New Blood Orchestra reworking 16 selections sans guitars, bass and drums. Working with arranger John Metcalfe, the concert filmed on Sept. 26, 2010 captured Gabriel, several backing singers and a full orchestra under the baton of Ben Foster performing at the legendary Arena di Verona in Italy.

The thrilling performance seen on the newly-released Mercury Studios Blu-ray includes a parade of beloved Gabriel songs including the chilling "San Jacinto" (which makes full use of the orchestra's powers), driving "Digging in the Dirt," dynamic "Signal to Noise" that grows in might with each passing measure, the wistful "Mercy Street," luxurious "Red Rain," buoyant "Solsbury Hill," and emotive "In Your Eyes" and "Don't Give Up"  the latter two bolstered by Ane Brun's vocals that work well with Gabriel's signature baritone. Directed by Anna Gabriel, "Taking The Pulse" fuses dazzling concert footage with dramatic lighting and artful graphics to deliver Peter Gabriel's theatrical vision across the 97-minute performance. Title:
Message In A Bottle (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Modern dance, the music of Sting and The Police
Tell me more: Fans of the music of The Police and Sting, as well as lovers of top-tier modern dance will all find something to love on the newly released filmed adaptation of the stage production of "Message In A Bottle." Available now via a beautiful two-disc 4K Ultra HD+Blu-ray edition presented by Mercury Studios and Sadler's Wells, the celebrated full-length dance show plays out against the music of 17-time Grammy Award winner Sting. Kate Prince's choreography fuels a compelling storyline featuring two dozen or so dancers from ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company
. The audio and visual quality on the release is fantastic.

The new recordings of many of Sting's most recognized and beloved songs are artfully used to help propel the story of a displaced family and their journey through joy, love, despair and triumph. Alex Lacamoire's new arrangements feature Sting and guest artists such as Beverley Knight singing "Every Breath You Take," "Roxanne," "Fields of Gold," "Shape Of My Heart," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Invisible Sun" and many others. A number of dance styles ranging from pantomime, break dancing, ballet, folk and expressionist dance are used by the talented cast.

In the notes provided to this writer, Sting accurately states: "When I first saw 'Message In A Bottle,' I was overwhelmed by all the different styles of dance in the show. What I really didn't expect was to be so emotionally engaged in the story. Kate's imaginative story and beautiful choreography has brought my songs to new life, and I am thrilled that there is now a film of the fantastic stage show."

New Music: Peter Gabriel, Blue Öyster Cult

Groundbreaking rock is on full display via several new titles available now.

Artist:
 Peter Gabriel
Title: Back To Front - Live in London (Mercury Studios)
You might like if you enjoy: Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, elbow
Tell me more: Available in 4K Ultra High Definition for the first time ever, Peter Gabriel's Back To Front - Live in London (released on May 10, 2024) is a marvelous showcase of how top-tier music making and state-of-the-art technology immerse and capture the power of a perfect concert. Filmed over two nights at The O2 arena in London on Oct. 21 and 22, 2013, the Hamish Hamilton-directed 142-minute Back To Front - Live in London was shot on Gabriel's tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of his groundbreaking 1986 album So. Gabriel embarked on that tour with his original 1986-87 touring band members drummer Manu Katché, bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes and keyboardist David Sancious, who collectively played So in its entirety for the first time ever. The stellar visuals and audio quality on Back To Front - Live in London only bolster the power of the setlist. After opening with a previously-unheard and unfinished selection ("Daddy Long Legs" which would be further developed into "Playing For Time" for the artist's long-awaited 2023 full-length return i/o), Gabriel and company (including backing singers Jennie Abrahamson and Linnea Olsson) perform favorites and deep album cuts. Early standouts include the nuanced "Come Talk To Me," propulsive "Shock The Monkey," luxurious and poignant "Family Snapshot" and breezy crowd-pleasing track "Solsbury Hill."

The performance of So selections includes a stunning "Red Rain" (enhanced by Katché's dynamic drum playing), euphoric "Sledgehammer" and "Don't Give Up," the latter teaming Gabriel's affecting vocals with Abrahamson's soprano. Gabriel shows off his theatrical talents and dance moves on an especially infectious version of "Big Time." The encore includes a performance of the ambitious art rocker "The Tower That Ate People" and impactful "Biko."

Among the bonus features on the title is an interview with Gabriel and light show designer Rob Sinclair. A colorful 16-page booklet included with Back To Front - Live in London features a slew of photographs from the concert film as well as insightful liner notes penned by Mark Beaumont. Artist:
 Blue Öyster Cult
Title: Ghost Stories (Frontiers Music s.r.l.)
You might like if you enjoy: Blue Öyster Cult, the Animals, Raspberries
Tell me more: Leave it to the technological magic of artificial intelligence and 21st century digital technology to assist one of rock's great enduring acts to complete a collection of choice cuts in 2024. Blue Öyster Cult's Ghost Stories is a full-length album of "reimagined and newly completed songs" that span from 1978-2016. The "lost gems" featured on the album were recorded mostly between 1978 and 1983 — the exception being 2016's heartfelt cover of the Beatles' beloved "If I Fell." Now the archival recordings originally tracked on reel-to-reel analog tape by audio engineer George Geranios have been completed. Produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano, original band members Eric Bloom and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser as well as Albert Bouchard, Rick Downey and Castellano worked to complete the tracks heard on Ghost Stories. Early highlights on this new disc include the blues-rock opener "Late Night Street Fight," haunting "So Supernatural," a winning cover of the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," Neo-psychedelic nugget "Soul Jive," and rousing rocker "Gun." The dreamy "The Only Thing," a freewheeling lead guitar-fueled version of MC5's "Kick Out the Jams," the classic rock flavored "Money Machine" and melodic prog rocker "Don't Come Running To Me" are among the standouts on the disc's last half. Order Ghost Stories HERE.

Catching Up on 2023: Peter Gabriel, Jason Aldean, Juan Carlos Quintero

Before 2023 fully fades into history, I want to highlight several outstanding late year releases worthy of your full attention.

Artist:
Peter Gabriel
Title: i/o (Real World Productions)
You might like if you enjoy: Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Kate Bush
Tell me more: Before the release of Peter Gabriel's i/o this year, the groundbreaking English artist hadn't released a full-length album of material since 2002's Up. The good news for the countless millions of lovers of the 73-year-old English singer-songwriter-producer is that the new masterwork that has been in the works since early 1995 was well worth the wait. What jumps out with an initial listen is how fully and powerfully intact his signature vocals are across the disc, and how sophisticated and detailed the sonic landscape that surrounds each track. In early 2023, Gabriel began releasing a new song from the album with the arrival of every full moon; the initiative also served as a way to let each selection to be the focus on listeners' radar for a full month before another song was released. The full album was released as a cohesive collection on Dec. 1, 2023 (each of the dozen tracks are presented via two stereo mixes; a third "In-Side Mix" version is presented in Dolby Atmos). The intoxicating opener "Panopticom," experimental "The Court," masterfully luxurious "Playing For Time," stirring "And Still" and reflective title track (the latter bolstered by the most artful of dynamics) just begin to tell the story of an album that demands repeated listens and continues to reveal its bewitching secrets with each subsequent play. Information: petergabriel.com.

Artist: Jason Aldean
Title: Highway Desperado (Broken Bow Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Luke Bryan, 3 Doors Down
Tell me more: One of country music's biggest stars of the 21st century, Jason Aldean has successfully used his talents as a dynamic live performer and exceptional recording artist to propel more than two dozen of his singles to number 1 on either the Hot Country Songs or Country Airplay charts. On his latest full-length album Highway Desperado, the Macon, Georgia native continues his incredible run with a terrific collection that showcases real life triumphs and struggles while simultaneously celebrating the American spirit with an otherworldly and emotional touch. Aldean has been especially masterful at blending modern country and classic rock genres into a signature style that resonates at festivals and arena settings. Each of the 14 songs on Highway Desperado are immediately infectious; the timely number one hit "Try That In A Small Town" taps into the well-founded fears of millions of Americans who have seen violent crime soar in big cities across the United States over the past several years. The Michael Knox-produced album's strengths are found across its run; the tender ballad "Hungover in a Hotel" offers a heartfelt message of regret, while the country rocker "Let Your Boys Be Country" celebrates time-honored traditions that champion how boys grow into men. Aldean sings of romantic loss poignantly on the beautiful "Whose Rearview" and "I'm Over You." Aldean explores newfound love on the soaring "Knew You'd Come Around," while the moody closer "Highway Desperado" taps into the powerful and invisible forces that lure some to keep moving on down the open road. Information: JasonAldean.com.

Artist: Juan Carlos Quintero
Title: desserts... (Moondo Records)
You might like if you enjoy: Craig Chaquico, Laurence Juber
Tell me more: Guitar master Juan Carlos Quintero's latest album desserts... is a ravishing celebration of Latin-jazz instrumental music and the artist's flawless fretwork. The self-produced 10-track desserts... brings together the Medellin, Columbia-born artist's incredible jazz mining guitar playing with the sounds, rhythms and grooves of the Southern American and Caribbean regions. Surrounded by a terrific group of top-tier players (bassist Eddie Resto, pianist Joe Rotondi, drummer Aaron Serfaty and percussionist Joey DeLeon), the troupe brings a stylish elegance to wonderful originals composed by Van Morrison (the artfully reworked "Moondance"), Armando Peraza (the joyful "Estampa Cuban"), Eden Ahbez (the luxurious and deeply affecting "Nature Boy"), John Gillespie (fleet-footed "A Night In Tunisia") and more. New music roundup: Peter Gabriel, Metal Marty, The Vogues, PiL

With the arrival of 2023 have come announcements about a number of just-released advance singles as well as forthcoming new full-length titles set for the early part of the year. Here is a roundup of notable new music releases.

Legendary singer-songwriter Peter Gabriel is back with a new song "Panopticom (Bright Side Mix)," the first track from a forthcoming album titled i/o — the LP will mark the artist's first set of wholly new material since his September 2002 album Up

The song recalls Gabriel's groundbreaking and luxurious recordings of the 1980s as well as material from Danny Elfman's most recent album Big Mess. It is a bewitching and impressive listen.

As noted in a news release, Gabriel worked with longtime collaborators bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes and drummer Manu Katché, as well as producer-musician Brian Eno. Gabriel noted that he will release a new selection with each full moon.

"Some of what I'm writing about this time is the idea that we seem incredibly capable of destroying the planet that gave us birth and that unless we find ways to reconnect ourselves to nature and to te natural world we are going to lose a lot," Gabriel explained in the release. "A simple way of thinking about where we fit in to all of this is looking up at the sky...and the moon has always drawn me to it."

Information: PeterGabriel.com.

Supersuckers guitarist Metal Marty is set to release the tongue-in-cheek titled Metal Marty's Greatest Hits on Feb. 3, 2023 via Acetate Records

The album will feature 10 songs, and the 35-minute disc will provide listeners with a sonic tour of Magic City, Idaho, an "unusual lakeside resort town with a penchant for partying and no shortage of odd characters."

"It's quite a place if ya got grit, which we have in spades," notes Marty "Metal Marty" Chandler. Indeed, the artist is a resident of Magic City, a small Idaho community. "I think it sounds like a greatest hits record. There's every kind of song on it, yet it still flows. And it's a ridiculous title for a first record."

Omnivore Recordings has just announced the forthcoming release of The Vogues At Co & Ce  The Complete Singles and More. The collection — set for release on Feb. 24 — will mark the first ever collection of the vocal group's A and B sides from Co & Ce Records.

Formed while they were in high school as The Val-Aires in 1958, Bill Burkette, Don Miller, Hugh Geyer and Chuck Blasko recorded their first single on a local label. After high school, the members joined the military service or went to college, eventually joining forces again to record, this time as The Vogues.

Now here for the first time, the A- and B-sides to all eight original Vogues singles from 1965–1967 have been collected on The Vogues At Co & Ce – The Complete Singles And More. This compilation marks the CD and Digital debut of material that has been unavailable for nearly 60 years. In addition to those singles, the set also includes seven tracks from 1996’s out-of- print You’re The One: The Best Of The Vogues (The Co & Ce Sessions), featuring songs written by P.F. Sloan/Steve Barri, Roger Christian/Barry Mann/Cynthia Weill, and Don & Dick Addrisi. Produced for Release by Grammy® winner Lee Lodyga and Cary E. Mansfield, with restoration and mastering from Grammy® winning engineer Michael Graves, the set also contains new liner notes from Scott Schinder, which have been approved by both remaining original members of the band, Hugh Geyer and Chuck Blasko. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Public Image Ltd. (PiL) is back with a wonderful new track, "Hawaii," which is truly legendary band leader John Lydon's most affecting original. According to a new media release, the song "is a love letter to John's wife of nearly five decades, Nora, who is living with Alzheimer's. A pensive, personal yet universal love song that will resonate with many, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent, and in particular, one of their  happiest moments together in Hawaii."

Indeed, known for his groundbreaking hard-edged approach with the Sex Pistols, along with PiL, the emotional ballad is a strong departure for Lydon.

“It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most,” says Lydon via the media release. “It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.”

PiL are confirmed to take part in the competition to represent Ireland at the 67th annual Eurovision Song Contest with "Hawaii." . The competition will take place at 9:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Pacific Time) on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 on Ireland's "The Late Late Show" and can be live streamed HERE. PiL plans to release a new full-length album later this year. Information: PILOFFICIAL.COM.

Marillion set to release nine classic tracks re-imagined via 'With Friends From The Orchestra' on Nov. 29, 2019

I know many of my American friends are not familiar with British rock band Marillion, a great and ambitious troupe that has a long and rich legacy. Here is news on the band's next project...

'With Friends From The Orchestra' available on Friday, November 29, 2019

Earlier this year, Marillion entered the studio with the intention to record selected songs from their rich catalogue along with friends from the orchestra.

Recorded at The Racket Club and Peter Gabriel‘s Real World Studios, and with a running time of almost 80 minutes, With Friends From The Orchestra features nine classic Marillion tracks re-imagined and accompanied by the In Praise Of Folly String Quartet with Sam Morris (French Horn) and Emma Halnan (Flute).

Marillion explain:

“So our brilliant producer and collaborator Michael Hunter wrote some new string arrangements and we took a week out to go to Real World Studios and record with our friends. The result has exceeded our expectations, is indeed a thing of beauty.

We hope you enjoy the songs and agree with us that some of them are actually better than the originals(!). Whether or not you agree with that bold statement we’re sure this work will move you.”

Estonia,” originally from 1997’s album This Strange Engine and the first song to be revealed from the album, gives a first insight into the hauntingly beautiful and touching versions of some of the band’s most beloved songs.

The official video grants an exclusive peak behind the scenes of the album recording sessions and can be watched on Marillion’s official Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/c1UEHTMHkxM

DVD gift guide: Peter Gabriel, MST3K, Santana IV, Iggy Pop, Gregory Porter

With the holidays fast approaching, there is simply no time like the present to begin thinking about great DVD titles to give as gifts  or to put on your own wish list for the season!

Artist: Peter Gabriel
Title: Still Growing Up + Live & Unwrapped (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Tell me more: The two-disc DVD release "Still Growing Up + Live & Unwrapped" features groundbreaking rock artist Peter Gabriel  in the early '00s performing some of his most treasured material. Still Growing Up boasts a wonderful full-length concert in Belgium that showcases incredibly powerful versions of "Red Rain," "Secret World," "San Jacinto" and "Digging in the Dirt." Bonus material on that title includes early studio footage of Gabriel and his band performing "Darkness," "No Way Out" and "Growing Up" ahead of the then-forthcoming 2002 "Growing Up Live" tour, as well as Gabriel appearing live on the BBC show "Later...with Jools Holland" playing "Downside Up" and "Father, Son." Information: eagle-rock.com.

Title: Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XXXVII (Shout! Factory)
Tell me more: One of the most unique and groundbreaking shows in the history of television, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is celebrated via the latest DVD box set ("Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XXXVII") featuring four previously-unreleased episodes. For 11 wonderful years MST3K somehow blended science fiction, comedy, pop culture and music together with aplomb in an unadulterated celebration of terrible moviemaking. Take "Escape 2000," an early '80s low-budget Italian film that allowed ample chances for the crew of the Satellite of Love to reference everything from Ziggy Stardust, the Talking Heads and "Purple Rain" to the Kinks, Eddie Money and Ringo Starr. Across the four movies, many of the crew's riffs are even sung. The latest MST3K set also features the '60s hot rod/rock 'n' roll film "The Horror of Party Beach," as well as "The Human Duplicators" and "Invasion of the Neptune Men." Information: shoutfactory.com.

Artist: Santana IV
Title: Live at the House of Blues, Las Vegas (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Tell me more: A few weeks before the classic late '60s/early '70s lineup of Santana released their much-anticipated reunion album Santana IV album in April 2016, the group performed a special concert at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. The lineup of guitarist Carlos Santana, guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist-lead vocalist Gregg Rolie, drummer Michael Shrieve, congas player Michael Carabello and several other players shine across the new concert film Live at the House of Blues, Las Vegas. Those who love that troupe's blend of heavy grooves and percussion get that from the get go with Shrieve, Carabello and percussionist Karl Perazzo offering up dynamic rhythmic interplay on "Soul Sacrifice" and follow-up "Jingo" with Santana layering the proceedings with his Latin-flavored lead guitar work. An extended version of the rock staple "Evil Ways" features all sides of the sweet-sounding ensemble with Rolie delivering his distinctive vocals and strong work on the keyboards while Santana and Schon (of Journey fame) trade blistering lead guitar work. Among the strongest tracks are the breezy "Anywhere You Want to Go," tandem-guitar propelled "Choo Choo" and dynamic freewheeling "No One to Depend On." The DVD includes a revealing interview with the band. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Iggy Pop
Title: Post Pop Depression: Live at the Royal Albert Hall (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Tell me more: Filmed on the heels of the release of his acclaimed Post Pop Depression collaboration with Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme recorded mostly at Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, the newly released concert film and companion audio recording Post Pop Depression: Live at the Royal Albert Hall delivers on Iggy Pop's powerful blend of hard rock, punk and alt rock via a 22-song performance in front of an adoring crowd. In addition to potent new material (particularly the guitar-heavy "Gardenia"), Pop and his excellent band (including Homme) play bona fide classics including a remarkably tender take on "China Girl" and propulsive "Lust for Life" (the latter two which he co-wrote with the late David Bowie).  "Post Pop Depression" is available on DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD and via digital formats. Information: eagle-rock.com.

Artist: Gregory Porter
Title: Live in Berlin (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Tell me more: An amazing vocalist and top-tier songwriter, Grammy winner Gregory Porter's jazz-meets-soul style is displayed across the wonderful Live in Berlin (released Nov. 25, 2016). Backed by a sterling four-man band, the concert features the memorable blue-tinged jazz ballad "Hey Laura," uptempo medley "On My Way to Harlem / What's Going On" and rousing R&B tribute to his son "Don't Lose Your Steam." A singer able to sing with technical skill and emotional depth free of cliche, Porter is able to bring his life experiences, world issues and family ties brilliantly into song. The film features all of the songs featured on the accompanying audio CDs, with Porter providing narrative asides on the stories behind most of the tracks. Live in Berlin is available on DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD and via digital formats. Information: eagle-rock.com and GregoryPorter.com.

Sights and Sounds: Jimi Hendrix, Peter Gabriel, The Pretty Reckless

Whew! I am still playing "wake up" after catching the incredible performance from Radiohead last night at the Shrine in Los Angeles. Here are several big news items to catch everybody up with...

Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show  12/31/69 out September 30, 2016 on CD, 2 LP 180 Gram Vinyl, high resolution SACD and digital

Historic Debut Concert of Band of Gypsys to Be Released in its Entirety For First Time Ever
August 9, 2016- New York, NY- Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, are releasing Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69, fully documenting the debut performance of Jimi Hendrix’s short-lived but eternally influential Band of Gypsys on September 30. The group played four historic concerts at the Fillmore East in New York City – two on New Year’s Eve 1969, and two on New Year’s Day 1970. Never before has the first of these sets been available in its entirety. The vast majority of the performances have never seen the light of day in any configuration.

Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 was produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott, the same team who have overseen all of Jimi Hendrix’s audio and audio visual releases by Experience Hendrix L.L.C. since 1995. Kramer served Jimi Hendrix as his primary recording engineer throughout his lifetime and the newly mixed Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 from the original 1” 8 track master tapes. The album was mastered by Grammy Award winner Bernie Grundman and will be simultaneously released, on CD, 2 LP 180 gram vinyl, high resolution SACD and digitally. Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 is available for pre-order on CD: http://smarturl.it/jh_mg_cd and Vinyl: http://smarturl.it/jh_mg_vinyl
Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 marks the first ever Jimi Hendrix SACD and high resolution digital release. Additionally, Experience Hendrix is also releasing People, Hell & Angels on the same day. People, Hell & Angels, a collection of previously unreleased studio recordings, peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart in March 2013. The album features studio versions of many of the songs featured on Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69.
Over the course of four extraordinary years, Jimi Hendrix placed his indelible stamp upon popular music with breathtaking velocity. Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix’s legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career which boasted of indefinite possibilities.
The revolutionary impact Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox, and Buddy Miles had upon the boundaries and definitions of rock, R&B, and funk can be traced to four concerts over the course of two evenings on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. These performances were first celebrated by Band Of Gypsys, which featured six songs from the two January 1, 1970 concerts including “Machine Gun,” the album’s dramatic centerpiece. Issued in April 1970, Band Of Gypsys challenged and surprised the guitarist’s wide following with its extended arrangements and vibrant mix of rock and soul. Nonetheless, the album proved to be a runaway commercial success and sadly, with his death in London in September 1970, would become the last album Jimi Hendrix personally authorized for release.
Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 documents the first of the group’s four legendary Fillmore East concerts. This set presents an assortment of fresh, exciting new songs such as “Earth Blues,” “Ezy Ryder,” “Stepping Stone,” “Burning Desire,” and “Machine Gun”—none of which had ever before been issued on disc. Moreover, nearly all of the group’s material had never been performed before an audience. “We decided that we couldn’t do any songs that had already been released,” explains Billy Cox. “We wanted to give them something different. So we went at the project in a joyous, creative posture and ultimately developed the repertoire of the Band of Gypsys.”

While promoter Bill Graham had advertised the concerts as ‘Jimi Hendrix: A Band Of Gypsys’, few could have anticipated what Hendrix had in store. “We had two shows New Years Eve and two shows New Years Day,” remembered Cox. “We didn’t know what to expect from the audience and the audience didn’t know what to expect from us, but from the time we hit that first note, they were in awe. You had Jimi Hendrix, a drummer who had been with the Electric Flag and Wilson Pickett, and I was the new kid on the block.”

With the anticipation of the sold out Fillmore audience heightened to fever pitch, Hendrix led his trio through a scintillating, seventy-five minute opening performance. None of the eleven songs presented had yet to grace an Experience album. In the place of signature songs like “Purple Haze” and “All Along The Watchtower” were confident renditions of “Power Of Soul” and “Hear My Train A Comin.’”

Jimi generously extended center stage to Buddy Miles, providing a showcase for “Changes” and a charged rendition of the Howard Tate R&B hit “Stop”. “We had rehearsed “Changes” and a few others for Buddy,” explains Cox. “All of the songs we performed had been rehearsed. We didn’t look at it as Buddy’s part of the show. We were all there to give. We were all there to help and material went on whether it was written by Jimi or not.” Former Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke, who authored this collection’s liner notes, describes “Stop” as being something akin to “a psychedelic power-trio Temptations.” Hendrix’s scalding version of Elmore James’ “Bleeding Heart” is the set’s only other cover, underscoring the new band’s emphasis on the blues.

As the Fillmore audience roared with approval, the Band Of Gypsys left the stage confident that they had validated Jimi’s new music before his loyal followers. “After the gigs were finished, Jimi was quite relieved,” remembers Cox. “We felt the concerts went well. I might add that in previous gigs with the Experience he had used a fuzz face [tone control pedal] and a Wah-Wah pedal, then at Woodstock he used a fuzz face, Wah-Wah pedal and Uni-Vibe, but at the Fillmore East he used a fuzz face, Wah-Wah pedal, Uni-Vibe and Octavia and it was incredible. In fact you could hear all of it kicking in on ‘Machine Gun.’ It was incredible. There were people in the audience with their mouths open.”

“Machine Gun” stands as one of Hendrix’s finest and most influential compositions. Hendrix pushed Delta blues into places its pioneers could not have imagined, fusing his extraordinary instrumental skills within his passionate expression of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. “Machine Gun” endures as a classic amongst the already classic-drenched Jimi Hendrix canon. Fricke notes of this version, the first that Hendrix and company had ever played in concert, “..Here it is, after 46 years, another revelation – a stunning essay in pain, rage and determined survival, fully formed in its initial outing.”

Long sought after by the guitarist’s worldwide following, Machine Gun: The Fillmore East First Show 12/31/69 presents the complete performance in its original sequence.

EAGLE ROCK ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS
PETER GABRIEL
GROWING UP LIVE + STILL GROWING UP & UNWRAPPED BLU-RAY+DVD
STILL GROWING UP LIVE & UNWRAPPED 2DVD
GROWING UP LIVE DIGITAL VIDEO
~SEPTEMBER 16, 2016~

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce a double release from Peter Gabriel on September 16, 2016. This features a reissue of the 2DVD set “Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped”[MSRP $29.98] and for the first time a Blu-ray+DVD set of “Growing Up Live + Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped” [MSRP $34.98] containing all the material from the original DVD releases plus the previously unreleased“Growing Up On Tour – A Family Portrait”Growing Up Live will also be released on digital formats.
The “Growing Up Live” concert film was recorded on the tour of the same name from 2002/3 and boasts key tracks Sledgehammer, In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, Digging In The Dirt, More Than This, Red Rain, Growing Up, Mercy Street, Here Comes The Flood and more.  “Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped” includes the concert film of the Still Growing Up tour from 2004 and the “Unwrapped” film (both shot in standard definition), which give a more intimate look at Peter Gabriel on tour and explore the world behind the songs featured in the shows. The Blu-ray+DVD set has all the material from these three DVD discs included on one Blu-ray disc and one DVD. Also included on the Blu-ray disc is the Family Portrait film.
In 2002 and 2003, following the release of his album “Up”, Peter Gabriel went on the road with his “Growing Up” tour, once again collaborating with production designer Robert Lepage to create a spectacular and theatrical live experience. The tour took in thirty-two cities across the USA, Canada and Europe with this concert film, directed by Hamish Hamilton, being shot over two nights at the FilaForum in Milan in May 2003 with Peter Gabriel and the band performing “in the round” at the center of the arena. Filmed in high definition, this was originally released on DVD in 2003 but never on Blu-ray. The DVD is now being reissued and the concert is being released on Blu-ray for the first time.
“Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped” is taken from the “Still Growing Up” tour of 2004, which took Peter Gabriel and his band into smaller and more intimate venues in contrast to the large arenas chronicled in the “Growing Up Live” film. Award-winning director Hamish Hamilton reunites with Peter Gabriel for this concert film. The ‘Unwrapped’ film sees Anna Gabriel take over the director’s chair with the collaboration of Hamish Hamilton. A simpler approach suggested a different set list and Peter, Hamish and Anna were determined that this should be filmed in a very different style. It shows Peter Gabriel as many of his fans love to see him, just playing the music.
For the Blu-ray+DVD edition “Growing Up Live” is presented in high definition for the first time on the Blu-ray disc. Also on the Blu-ray disc in standard definition are the “Unwrapped” film and its bonus features and, as an added bonus, Anna Gabriel’s previously unreleased film “Growing Up On Tour – A Family Portrait” has also been included. The DVD in this set contains the “Still Growing Up Live” film and its bonus features.
“Growing Up Live” + “Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped” are important films that capture one of our most innovative and best loved artists at his very best.

The Pretty Reckless announces 'Who You Selling For' due out October 21, 2016 via Razor & Tie

FIRST SINGLE "TAKE ME DOWN" OUT NOW

US TOUR DATES THIS FALL

After topping the rock charts in 2014 and 2015, The Pretty Reckless returns with their extraordinary third studio album Who You Selling For, due October 21st on Razor & Tie. The new album is the band's anticipated follow up to Going To Hell, which spawned the biggest rock song of 2014 in "Heaven Knows" and a total of three #1 Mainstream and Active Rock hits. The first single from the new album, "Take Me Down," premiered worldwide July 15th on iHeart Radio and impacted at rock radio four days later on July 19th, quickly climbing to #7 on the chart. Listen to the new single HERE

Produced by longtime collaborator Kato KhandwalaWho You Selling For is an arresting collection of rock tunes that expand the band's sound to encompass soulful, bluesy undertones, written by front woman Taylor Momsen and guitarist Ben Phillips. This raucous 12-track collection puts Momsen's dark lyrics and raw, charismatic vocals on full display while the band delivers at full intensity with a level of musicianship that raises the bar.

Formed in 2009, The Pretty Reckless released their debut album Light Me Up in 2010 scoring legions of fans worldwide, but it was their sophomore record Going to Hell that positioned the band to become the first new artist to breakout of rock in years, debuting in the Top 5 on Billboard's Top 200.  Achieving three #1 Rock hits - "Heaven Knows," "Fucked Up World" and "Follow Me Down" - was a feat that has not been accomplished by a female fronted group since The Pretenders in 1984, nearly a quarter of a century ago.

Despite feeling the physical and emotional demands from their epic two-year run supporting Going to Hell, Momsen and Phillips jumped right into writing the songs for the new album. "We had so much we wanted to say, it was like shaking a can of soda on tour, and then when we started writing we cracked the seal," says Momsen. "The touring life is very isolating. You look at the world through a bus or airplane window. But music is the healing factor. It's the one thing that is grounding and a true companion through the forest. It saved us - again."

With Who You Selling For the band continues to take bold steps forward, cementing their place at the forefront of rock. The deeply personal album features a diverse set of standout tracks, from the blistering hard rock of "Oh My God" to the classic southern rock of "Back to the River". Lead single"Take Me Downfeatures Taylor's distinctively smoky voice rolling over '60s - tinged rock guitar.Loudwire says, "'Take Me Down' features a bit of rasp and a soulful delivery from Momsen, while guitarist Ben Phillips gets a solid mid-song riffing showcase that raises the track to a new level.  Add in some backing organ playing and you've got a blistering new song from the band."

The band will hit the road this fall in support of the album and will run through major US cities such as Chicago, New York and Nashville before wrapping on December 6th in Los Angeles. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday August 12th at 10 AM local time. Please visit The Pretty Reckless for complete info.
