Tell me more: The return of 20/20 is one of the most exciting realities of early 2025. The beloved Tulsa, Oklahoma-spawned power pop legends have just released Back To California, the band's first new album since 1998's Interstate. Steve Allen (vocals, guitar), Ron Flynt (bass, vocals) and Ray Flynt (drums, percussion) have delivered a new studio album that expands 20/20's discography and legacy. The opening title track is undeniably catchy while simultaneously tapping into sorrow-tinged overtones that are wonderfully palpable. The album's strengths continue to reveal themselves across the 11-track masterwork via literate and instantly-memorable originals. The shimmering "The End Of The Summer" is a melodic juggernaut, bolstered by great lead vocals, sublime harmonies, jangly guitars and an artful arrangement. The edgy guitar-anchored rocker "Springtime Love Song," driving "Lucky Heart," sumptuous "Laurel Canyon" tapping into the mythology of the fabled mountainous area in the Hollywood Hills, infectious romance-minded ear candy "Spark" and heartfelt closer "Farewell" are among the other terrific cuts on the album. Title: Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown [50th Anniversary Extended Version] (Vince Guaraldi Film Productions)

Tell me more: Although it has been 50 years since the beloved "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" debuted on CBS-TV, composer-pianist Vince Guaraldi's full score has finally been issued via an expanded 30-track edition available on audio CD, vinyl and via streaming services; the title includes the complete 22 cue score and eight never-before-heard bonus tracks. Guaraldi layers his Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano to bolster his signature jazz sound, and his own artistry is enhanced by a trio completed by Seward McCain (electric bass) and Vince Lateano (drums). Among my favorite selections on the wonderful collection are the playfully uptempo "Paw Pet Overture," wistful "Freddie's Mood (Chopin's Nocturne in E flat major, Op.9 No.2)," emotive "Never Again," a decidedly alternative take on "Linus and Lucy," the jazzy delight "Last Call for Love," and a number of alternate versions of his memorable "Heartburn Waltz." The CD includes an 8-page insert, and the vinyl includes a 4-page insert. Both the CD and vinyl include art from the special and liner notes that give a track-by-track analysis by producer Sean Mendelson and notes by producer Jason Mendelson and Derrick Bang (author of "Vince Guaraldi at the Piano"). Tell me more: Lovers of power pop, art rock, synth pop, post punk and classic rock will all find something to love on He's Dead Jim's wonderful new album Head Like A Toyshop. The Scotland troupe featuring Andy Milne (drums), Neil Christie (guitar, vocals) and Allan Bell (vocals, bass) isn't afraid to mix it up across the 14-track album, incorporating a number of musical genres and wide-ranging topics (ranging from science fiction and trash comics to literature, war and more) along the way. The speedy "On The Beach" and "Ticket To Explode," confessional "Why I Gave Up," power pop gem "Wire Buddha," indie rocker "Haywire," electronica foray "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" and other tracks on the album collectively add up to something very special. Title: Stories With Guitars (Kool Kat)

Tell me more: Joe Giddings' second album for the Kool Kat label is a solid collection of great songs that are as infectious as they are smart. The singer-songwriter began writing and recording the collection in March 2024, starting things off with the scintillating harmonies-filled gem "Then Came Madeline" for his daughter before quickly embarking on a quest to complete the 11-track masterwork. Memorable tracks abound on the release, including the soaring opener "Tonight Tonight," Queen-flavored "My Riviera," the decidedly timely melodic punk rocker "A.I. Lover," 12 string guitar-fueled "David Stepanski," and the enticing closer "Won It All Before Saying Goodbye." Information: koolkatmusik.com.

Tell me more: Austria's leading post black metal band Harakiri For The Sky is back with a new studio album (Scorched Earth) that finds the band unleashing a fiery mix of atmospheric hard hitting rock, hardcore and metal in the service of songs that pry into the our torn modern day society. Tell me more: Rock's most tragic tale likely involves power pop pioneers Badfinger, a British troupe that scored a handful of enduring singles ("Come and Get It," "No Matter What," "Day After Day," "Baby Blue") before financial and personal struggles led to the suicide death of 27-year-old leader Pete Ham in 1975. But now the band's shining legacy returns via the release of their long-lost album Head First 50 years after the disc's original recording in 1974; the new collection features Ham's final studio recordings and is definitely a welcome addition to Badfinger's stellar discography. For years, the master tapes for the Head First sessions were believed to have been lost. However, the recent rediscovery of the original multi-track tapes allowed for the mixing and mastering process of the tracks 50 years after they were recorded in the Apple Recording Studio on Savile Row in London. Tell me more: In September 2022, classic rock greats Blue Öyster Cult thrilled fans with a once-in-a-lifetime trilogy of sold-out concerts, each dedicated to one of the beloved genre-defying band's first three albums. Founding member Albert Bouchard (drums, vocals) joined the original core duo of Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead vocals, lead guitar) and Eric Bloom (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) along with Richie Castellano (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Danny Miranda (bass) and Jules Radino (drums, percussion) at each of the special performances. Now the third night of the concert series has been released courtesy of Frontiers Music; 50th Anniversary Live — Third Night is available on audio CD and vinyl as well as via DVD and Blu-ray. The concert recording is outstanding, with the early part of the set presenting the 1974 album Secret Treaties in its entirety. Tell me more: Ringo Starr is back with one of his most delightful solo efforts, the country music-focused Look Up. Produced and co-written by T Bone Burnett, the album features a rich mix of tracks ranging from the infectious opener "Breathless" (featuring guitarist Billy Strings) and the buoyant title track anchored by Starr's emotive lead vocals to the sorrowful "Time On My Hands" and rockabilly mining "Never Let Me Go." Other standouts include the beautiful ballad "I Live For Your Love" (the latter bolstered by Molly Tuttle's vocal harmonies and mandolin playing), country rocker "Rosetta" (featuring Tuttle and the Southern blues duo Larkin Poe), shimmering "String Theory" and reflective self-penned "Thankful" (the latter featuring Alison Krauss' harmony vocals and Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar). Tell me more: Available in 4K Ultra High Definition for the first time ever, Peter Gabriel's Back To Front - Live in London (released on May 10, 2024) is a marvelous showcase of how top-tier music making and state-of-the-art technology immerse and capture the power of a perfect concert. Filmed over two nights at The O2 arena in London on Oct. 21 and 22, 2013, the Hamish Hamilton-directed 142-minute Back To Front - Live in London was shot on Gabriel's tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of his groundbreaking 1986 album So. Gabriel embarked on that tour with his original 1986-87 touring band members drummer Manu Katché, bassist Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes and keyboardist David Sancious, who collectively played So in its entirety for the first time ever. The stellar visuals and audio quality on Back To Front - Live in London only bolster the power of the setlist. After opening with a previously-unheard and unfinished selection ("Daddy Long Legs" which would be further developed into "Playing For Time" for the artist's long-awaited 2023 full-length return i/o), Gabriel and company (including backing singers Jennie Abrahamson and Linnea Olsson) perform favorites and deep album cuts. Early standouts include the nuanced "Come Talk To Me," propulsive "Shock The Monkey," luxurious and poignant "Family Snapshot" and breezy crowd-pleasing track "Solsbury Hill." 

The performance of So selections includes a stunning "Red Rain" (enhanced by Katché's dynamic drum playing), euphoric "Sledgehammer" and "Don't Give Up," the latter teaming Gabriel's affecting vocals with Abrahamson's soprano. Gabriel shows off his theatrical talents and dance moves on an especially infectious version of "Big Time." The encore includes a performance of the ambitious art rocker "The Tower That Ate People" and impactful "Biko."

Tell me more: Leave it to the technological magic of artificial intelligence and 21st century digital technology to assist one of rock's great enduring acts to complete a collection of choice cuts in 2024. Blue Öyster Cult's Ghost Stories is a full-length album of "reimagined and newly completed songs" that span from 1978-2016. The "lost gems" featured on the album were recorded mostly between 1978 and 1983 — the exception being 2016's heartfelt cover of the Beatles' beloved "If I Fell." Now the archival recordings originally tracked on reel-to-reel analog tape by audio engineer George Geranios have been completed. Produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano, original band members Eric Bloom and Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser as well as Albert Bouchard, Rick Downey and Castellano worked to complete the tracks heard on Ghost Stories. Early highlights on this new disc include the blues-rock opener "Late Night Street Fight," haunting "So Supernatural," a winning cover of the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," Neo-psychedelic nugget "Soul Jive," and rousing rocker "Gun." Lynyrd Skynyrd and the music live on

I last saw Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert in May 2022 (read my review of that memorable concert HERE). One of my most notable concert experiences was seeing Gary Rossington perform with members of Blue Öyster Cult, Van Halen and others at the NAMM Show in 2015 (read my review of that event HERE). Lynyrd Skynyrd announces plans to continue on following passing of Gary Rossington

 

After the recent death of original founding member Gary Rossington, the Lynyrd Skynyrd band members and estates have been in discussion on what was next for the group and the music that is celebrating 50 years of generational history in American Rock and Roll.  The current members, led by Johnny Van Zant, the singer for the past 36 years, was unsure if they would continue following Gary’s untimely passing.  After much discussion with the band, the families of Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins, and Dale Rossington, the collective has reached unified support, and feel that continuing to perform LIVE, and keeping the music alive, is in the best interest of the fans and everyone involved.

Dale Rossington shares, “I recently lost my husband and partner of over 41 years. He was an amazing father, grandfather, brother and friend, but most importantly was a world class musician and songwriter.  It’s been my honor and privilege to share the stage with him for all these years. His music touched so many millions of people around The World, and Gary was always the first to say how, ‘Skynyrd’s music is bigger than me or any one person.’  Gary made it known at every chance to express how timeless the music was, and it was always his goal to keep the music alive for his brothers because that was always their dream. He spent his entire life trying to carry on that dream for Ronnie, Allen, Steve and all the others over the years. While he was not able to physically be on stage with the current lineup over the last couple years, he supported them in every way. His dream will continue thanks to Johnny, Rickey and the rest of our band mates to continue to carry his legacy and music on for future generations.”

Johnny Van Zant adds, “Gary was not only my brother, bandmate and friend.  I think he loved me as much as I loved him. We would do anything for each other.  We laughed, we fell, we cried and made up, and shared the stage for the last 36 years.  Gary, along with my brother Ronnie and Allen started this band and left us all a legacy of music that has stood the test of time, and crossed three generations of fans.  The music they created, and the music we created, together since 1987, was always meant to be experienced LIVE. We have come together with the founding band member estates, and everyone involved, and feel the music should continue for everyone to love and enjoy.  So we will continue to perform for the Skynyrd Nation.”

 

Judy Van Zant Jenness adds, “Lynyrd Skynyrd has been a part of my life for 50+ years. The journey has been filled with love, joy, friendship and tragedy. Ronnie, Gary and Allen’s dream was to write music that would connect with people and to play that music live. I cannot say with certainty what those who have passed on would want us to do, but I do know what Gary wanted. And I know what the fans want. To show our undying love for those who are no longer with us and to pay tribute to them, the music will continue. The Lynyrd Skynyrd family is unified in this decision.”

 

In June, Encore will present Lynyrd Skynyrd’s performance filmed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on November 13, 2022. The concert film captures the final public performance of Gary Rossington, and will be exhibited on big screens in movie theaters across the U.S. It will then be broadcast in August on PBS. The CMT Music Awards presented an all-star tribute live on CBS from Austin’s Moody Center on April 2, honoring original founding member Gary Rossington featuring Billy Gibbons, Chuck Leavell, Cody Johnson, Paul Rodgers, Slash, and Warren Haynes with LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd joining as “The Honkettes.” Recently, Lynyrd Skynyrd was honored by Spotify for reaching the milestone achievement of ONE BILLION Streams for “Sweet Home Alabama.”

 

The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour, the first co-headlining tour featuring ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd will stage performances in twenty-five cities in North America this summer, with special guest Uncle Kracker. Produced by Live Nation, the tour kicks off on Friday, July 21 at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL, and wraps in Camden, NJ at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion on Sunday, September 17.
