New music: Pete Ham tribute, Sam Barber, Carmen Ratti Band

In this column, I review three outstanding new audio titles available now.

Tell me more: Beloved Welsh singer-songwriter Pete Ham was only 27 when he tragically took his own life on April 24, 1975. Despite his death at such a young age, the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of Badfinger left an incredible legacy and has undeniably influenced countless artists over the past 50 years. Now a special tribute album titled Just Look Inside The Cover — Songs Of Pete Ham further celebrates Ham's timeless talent; this unique album features songs that were only previously released as home demos and never recorded by Badfinger. The songs are treasures to be sure, and those Ham-penned compositions are bolstered by a wide range of artists who bring magic across the 22-track collection. Early standouts on the marathon-length tribute include the melodic opener "A Lonely Day" performed by Mike Delevante, Pezband's wonderfully Beatlesque "Tulip," Eric Dover's rollicking "Leaving On A Midnight Train," Bill Lloyd's luxurious "Our Song," Rob Bonfiglio's soaring harmonies-filled "Hand in Hand" and Mary Karizen's genre-defying delight "Dawn." Fans of Badfinger will love The Fraternals' anthemic power pop sortie "Catherine Cares." The collection's parade of treasures continues via Tobin Sprout's tender "Keep Your Country Tidy," Humbert's affecting "Little Mary," The Parlophonics' joyful "Make Me Feel Good," Richard Barone's mellifluous "I'm Only Human," Mark Healey's wistful "It Doesn't Really Matter" and Ron Griffiths' soulful "Take Good Care of My Baby." Another top-flight track on the disc is Bob Jackson's "Just Look Inside The Cover," a track that could have been a hit in the 1970s or '80s, and is deserving of airplay aplenty in 2026. Title: Broken View (Atlantic Outpost)

Tell me more: Sam Barber's second studio album, Broken View, finds the rising young Americana singer-songwriter exploring the world around him with uncanny depth and artistry. Only 23, Barber has quickly become one of his generation's most acclaimed artists; last month he won "Breakthrough Country Artist" at the 2026 American Music Awards. Broken View is an album whose songs have a palpable power that hit their mark with a single listen and Barber's authentic vocals fully bolster the 13 originals on the disc. The biting aptly-titled opener "Borrowed Time," introspective roots rocker "Far Past" examining an imperfect relationship, emotional "Just A Kid," lost love-minded title track, yearning "All For You," emotional "Satellite" and gorgeous "I Will Follow" are among the stellar songs on the outstanding album. Barber will spend much of the rest of 2026 on tour, and upcoming dates include at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on July 18, and at Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix, AZ on Dec. 11. Tell me more: San Francisco Bay Area's Carmen Ratti Band featuring singer Jill Dineen has released the blues album Come to Me, an 11-track disc that showcases the troupe's energetic blend of electric blues and roots music. Formed in 2018, the ensemble artfully infuses gospel, soul, rock blues and even funk into material on the disc. The album features a slew of great tracks including the driving soul gem "Get In Line," the nuanced ballad "Come to Me," Southern-styled blues sortie "I Can See," gospel ballad "Blessing In The Blues," Southern rock-tinged "Coming Down" and R&B "Pretty Good Man." In addition to Carmen Ratti (vocals, guitar) and Dineen (lead vocals), the band includes Tony "Macaroni" Lufrano (organ, piano), Steve Hazlewood (bass) and Randy Hayes (drums). In this column I showcase the latest album releases from celebrated country music great Kacey Musgraves, power pop heroes The Knack and legacy blues singer-songwriter/guitar master Duke Robillard.

Tell me more: Kacey Musgraves is back! The acclaimed country music artist's seventh studio album has been met with widespread acclaim and for good reason. The 13-track album chronicles life's ups and downs with authenticity, heart and an infectious musical soundscape that will keep discerning listeners coming back again and again. There are so many highlights on the album, country music lovers will want to dive into the track listing with abandon. Musgraves wrote many of the songs after a painful divorce and period of isolation so the songs have a heft that will resonate with a single listen. The reflective ballad "Back On The Wagon," accordion-drenched two-stepping duet with Willie Nelson titled "Uncertain, TX," steamy "Mexico Honey," irresistible "I Believe in Ghosts" and aptly-titled "Loneliest Girl" are among the great originals on the disc. The playful "Horses and Divorces" is a winning duet teaming the top-tier vocal talents of Musgraves and Miranda Lambert. Based on the strength of her fantastic performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, fans will want to catch her in concert this fall. Musgraves' forthcoming "Middle of Nowhere" Tour includes dates in Phoenix, AZ on Oct. 17 and in Los Angeles on Oct. 18 and Oct. 19. Tell me more: The power and excitement of The Knack's explosive power pop-meets-New Wave sound shines across the 19 studio, live and demo tracks featured on the newly-released Knackology: The Zen Recordings. From the ferocious opener "Let Me Out" (recorded live in Los Angeles in 1978), intoxicating rockers "Pop Is Dead" and "Ambition" (the latter two cuts from the band's essential 1998 LP Zoom) to a terrific cover of Badfinger's 1970 Pete Ham-penned hit "No Matter What," a breezy 1973 demo of "That's What The Little Girls Do," power pop perfection courtesy of "Can I Borrow A Kiss" and a hard rocking "Shine" captured at Leeds in 1991, magic abounds on this must-have collection. Among the other standouts are energetic live takes on some of The Knack's most beloved originals; inspired readings of "(She's So) Selfish" and "My Sharona" captured at a concert in Mountain View, California in June 1994 as well as the affecting "One Day At A Time" recorded in 2002 will thrill new and long-time fans of the Doug Fieger-led troupe. Tell me more: Duke Robillard, who recently celebrated his 77th birthday, is firing on all cylinders across his latest album Blast Off! Indeed, the legendary singer-songwriter/guitar great along with his All Star Band explore his love of blues, soul, R&B, jazz and more American roots genres across the 12-song collection. The album's parade of inviting cuts includes the exuberant Floyd Dixon-penned opener "When I Get Lucky," the jump blues sortie "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead (You Rascal You)," Chicago blues-styled ballad "Feel My Cares" showcasing Robillard's guitar chops and signature vocals, the instrumental swing foray "Play Boy Hop," soulful "Confusion" and lead guitar-anchored instrumental blues track "Galactic Grease." Catching up on 2025: Turnpike Troubadours, Cheap Trick, Edward Rogers, The Black Keys, The Iveys

Before the arrival of 2026, I wanted to highlight a handful of the year's best albums I hadn't yet celebrated in previous columns. The latest full-length discs from Cheap Trick, Turnpike Troubadours, The Black Keys and Edward Rogers as well as a new anthology featuring The Iveys are among my favorite audio releases of the year.

Title: The Price of Admission (Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers)

You might like if you enjoy: Shooter Jennings, Trampled by Turtles

Tell me more: I was recently able to catch up with the Turnpike Troubadours' sixth album, The Price of Admission, released in April 2025. An 11-track masterwork where the timeless sounds of neotraditional country, honky-tonk and Americana are fused with songs of incredible lyrical depth, the Shooter Jennings-produced album immerses the listener upon a single listen. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Evan Felker's top-tier voice delivers the wide range of material with real world emotion while the rest of the ensemble delivers nuanced and virtuoso musical accompaniment at every turn. Highlights on the stellar album include the deeply affecting opener "On The Red River" (a powerful song that looks at loss and love for a late father), the countrified "Searching For A Light" that looks at remaining hopeful despite life's bona fide challenges, the uptempo bluegrass-fueled "The Devil Plies His Trade," the exuberant "Ruby Ann" celebrating the magic of new love, and the rousing roots rocker "What Was Advertised." Tell me more: Cheap Trick returned in a big way in 2025 through a number of high profile appearances (including at the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 7 where the quartet performed in honor of their "lifelong brothers" KISS), as well as via the release of the beloved American rock band's 21st studio album All Washed Up. On the 11-track All Washed Up, singer Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Daxx X Nielsen deliver a bunch of killer originals with their signature zeal, blending power pop and alt rock with aplomb. They bust right out of the gate with the driving title track, and follow that up with the winning likes of the fiery "The Riff That Won't Quit," haunting "Bet It All" that looks at the dangers of gambling, the melodic romance-themed "The Best Thing," soaring "Twelve Gates," aptly-titled "Love Gone," bewitching "A Long Way to Worcester" and music hall-styled "Wham Boom Bang," the latter album closer really showcasing Zander's impressive tenor vocals. Tell me more: New York City-based singer-songwriter Edward Rogers is back with Astor Place, his first solo album in five years. Fans of '60s-era classic rock, modern power pop and literate singer-songwriter styles will all find something to love across the Don Fleming-produced 10-track disc. Tell me more: The Black Keys returned this year with No Rain, No Flowers, an album showcasing the myriad of strengths of the ambitious Akron, Ohio-spawned duo (singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney). The shimmering opener "No Rain, No Flowers," soulful "Make You Mine," melodic indie rocker "A Little Too High," playful romantic romp "Babygirl," melancholy-filled "Down to Nothing," edgy "Man On A Mission," dance floor-ready "Kiss It" and roots ballad "Neon Moon" are among the standouts on the Black Keys' 13th album. Title: Miniskirts And Rainbows (Y&T Music)

Tell me more: Miniskirts And Rainbows is an important new collection that features 19 tracks recorded between 1966 and 1969 by The Iveys, a pioneering power pop band that would later rise to fame as Badfinger courtesy of a series of memorable hit singles (including "No Matter What," "Come and Get It" and "Baby Blue"). Although many of the tracks on Miniskirts And Rainbows are demos and not originally intended for commercial release, the historical importance and palpable spirit of the essential recordings shine across the set. Among the wonderful cuts are "Cleopatra In A Miniskirt" (featuring lead vocals from Tom Evans), the buoyant "I Love You" (sung by Pete Ham), countrified delight "Blodwyn [demo]" (featuring outstanding vocal harmonies from Ham and Ron Griffiths), the Baroque ballad "Angelique [demo]," the psychedelic "Black & White Rainbows [version 2]," poignant Ham-penned "Yesterday Ain't Coming Back [demo]," Beach Boys flavored "Love Means Happiness," nostalgic "All The Fun Of The Fair" and Ham's sentimental "I Miss You [demo]."  Information: badfingerlibrary.com.

Essential new titles featuring power pop legends Badfinger, genre-defying rockers Blue Öyster Cult and beloved singer-drummer Ringo Starr are reviewed this week.

Tell me more: Rock's most tragic tale likely involves power pop pioneers Badfinger, a British troupe that scored a handful of enduring singles ("Come and Get It," "No Matter What," "Day After Day," "Baby Blue") before financial and personal struggles led to the suicide death of 27-year-old leader Pete Ham in 1975. But now the band's shining legacy returns via the release of their long-lost album Head First 50 years after the disc's original recording in 1974; the new collection features Ham's final studio recordings and is definitely a welcome addition to Badfinger's stellar discography. For years, the master tapes for the Head First sessions were believed to have been lost. However, the recent rediscovery of the original multi-track tapes allowed for the mixing and mastering process of the tracks 50 years after they were recorded in the Apple Recording Studio on Savile Row in London. The parade of soaring originals on Head First includes the melodic opener "Lay Me Down," biting "Hey Mr. Manager," glorious harmonies-drenched "Turn Around," acoustic "Back Again," lovely "Keep Believing," Beatlesque "Moonshine," and ambitious rock opus "Passed Fast." Tell me more: In September 2022, classic rock greats Blue Öyster Cult thrilled fans with a once-in-a-lifetime trilogy of sold-out concerts, each dedicated to one of the beloved genre-defying band's first three albums. Founding member Albert Bouchard (drums, vocals) joined the original core duo of Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (lead vocals, lead guitar) and Eric Bloom (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) along with Richie Castellano (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Danny Miranda (bass) and Jules Radino (drums, percussion) at each of the special performances. Now the third night of the concert series has been released courtesy of Frontiers Music; 50th Anniversary Live — Third Night is available on audio CD and vinyl as well as via DVD and Blu-ray. The concert recording is outstanding, with the early part of the set presenting the 1974 album Secret Treaties in its entirety. Standouts from that album's performance include the rocking opener "Career Of Evil" (whose lyrics were penned by punk rock poet Patti Smith), the jazz-meets-prog rock gem "Subhuman," hard charging rocker "Dominance and Submission," and an extended version of the dazzling "Flaming Telepaths." The marathon-length show also provides BÖC time to perform stellar takes of long-time favorites "Burnin' For You," "Godzilla," "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and the set-closing "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll." Tell me more: Ringo Starr is back with one of his most delightful solo efforts, the country music-focused Look Up. Produced and co-written by T Bone Burnett, the album features a rich mix of tracks ranging from the infectious opener "Breathless" (featuring guitarist Billy Strings) and the buoyant title track anchored by Starr's emotive lead vocals to the sorrowful "Time On My Hands" and rockabilly mining "Never Let Me Go." Other standouts include the beautiful ballad "I Live For Your Love" (the latter bolstered by Molly Tuttle's vocal harmonies and mandolin playing), country rocker "Rosetta" (featuring Tuttle and the Southern blues duo Larkin Poe), shimmering "String Theory" and reflective self-penned "Thankful" (the latter featuring Alison Krauss' harmony vocals and Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar). Tell me more: Released in early October, America & Friends — Live At The Ventura Theater is a new Blu-ray title that captures classic rock favorite America performing the band's hit singles "A Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," Sister Golden Hair," "I Need You" and more. Additionally, guests Andrew Gold and Stephen Bishop perform their most beloved hits at the event and join America's Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley on stage as well. Tell me more: There were so many great rock bands in the mid and late 1970s, it's easy to overlook a key artist of the era. Leave it to a special previously-unissued recording featuring The Babys (Live At The Bottom Line, 1979) released by Omnivore Recordings in January 2024 to recall the collective power and magic of singer-songwriter John Waite, guitarist Wally Stocker, bassist Ricky Phillips, keyboardist Jonathan Cain and drummer Tony Brock. Recorded on the band's "Head First" tour, the concert recording features three new-at-the-time songs making their official debut. The crowd-pleasing opener "Head First," Bad Company-styled rockers "Give Me Your Love" and "Run To Mexico" (the latter bolstered by Wally Stocker's sharp lead guitar play), inspired "Every Timer I Think Of You" and a poignant reading of their 1977 hit "Isn't It Time" all shine on the wonderful 11-track live set. Title: Slowhand At 70 — Live At The Royal Albert Hall  (Mercury Studios)

Tell me more: Slowhand At 70 — Live At The Royal Albert Hall is a landmark concert film previously issued on DVD and Blu-ray in November 2015, but is now newly available for the first time via the immersive 4K UltraHD format. Eric Clapton's 2015 performances during a seven-night run at Royal Albert Hall found the singer-guitarist celebrating his 70th birthday at his favorite venue; highlights include Slowhand playing both bona fide classics and deep cuts. Among this writer's early favorite performances on the title are his artful cover of JJ Cale's "Somebody's Knockin' On My Door" that opens the set, a musical reading of Willie Dixon's Chicago blues-flavored "Hoochie Coochie Man," and his reggae take on his 1974 number one hit "I Shot The Sheriff." The concert film's power only grows from there as evidenced by potent acoustic-styled takes on the tender "Tears In Heaven" and "Layla," as well as rousing electric versions of "Let It Rain," "Crossroads," "Cocaine" and "High Time We Went." While the parade of blues rock classics highlight Clapton's enduring powers as a guitar virtuoso, the heartfelt "Wonderful Tonight" showcases his emotive lead vocals. Information: mercurystudios.co.

Tell me more: For those who haven't yet caught up with the magic of Continental Drifters, White Noise & Lightning: The Best of Continental Drifters is the perfect introduction to the beloved collective. The 11-track LP and 15-track audio CD collection casts an outstanding light on the congregation of musical talents whose members first found fame in the illustrious likes of the Bangles, Dream Syndicate, the dB's, the Cowsills and more. Brilliant songcraft, top-tier musicianship and alluring vocal harmonies are among the key elements of Continental Drifters' signature sound. Among this writer's top cuts is the jangly opener "The Rain Song" co-penned by Susan Cowsill and Vicki Peterson, the propulsive Americana rocker "Mezzanine" featuring Carlo Nuccio, countrified Peter Holsapple-penned "Invisible Boyfriend," shimmering "Get Over It," dreamy "Mixed Messages" and reflective "Drifters." The CD version of the collection features a previously unissued 12-minute live version of "Who We Are, Where We Live." Tell me more: Cracker's exhilarating 35-year run is celebrated in spades across the wonderful Alternative History: A Cracker Retrospective collection available via 3-LP vinyl or 2-CD. The far-flung material showcased on the early part of the essential title includes the alt country-flavored "Sick of Goodbyes," infectious alt rocker "Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)" from the band's 2006 Redux album, bluegrass-styled "Mr. Wrong" (the latter featuring Leftover Salmon), rousing roots rocker "I See The Light," fiery favorite "Low" and traditional country nugget "Merry Christmas Emily." On the eve of the British rock outfit's largest UK/European run ever — including a sold-out date at Wembley Stadium — Def Leppard streamed a one-off live concert performance from the historic Sheffield venue The Leadmill. This unique 13-track set was one of the most intimate shows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers had played in more than 35 years, and included bona fide hits as well as material from the band's latest album Drastic Symphonies (recorded at Abbey Road Studios). There is a genuine excitement and energy displayed between the band members and audience across the 13-track concert. The set is front loaded with deep album cuts and rarities while the home stretch features several of the quintet's most beloved material. Tell me more: June 6, 2024 marked the fifth anniversary of the passing of groundbreaking singer-songwriter/pianist Malcolm John Rebeennack, Jr. — better known as Dr. John. The beloved champion of New Orleans who fused jazz, blues, funk and swamp rock together into a signature brew is celebrated on the wonderful new collection Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974, a wonderful 26-track retrospective revisiting choice material John released at the beginning of his high-profile solo career via a parade of memorable Atco/Atlantic album releases. The wealth of musical riches on the collection extends from the spoken word-anchored opener "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya," colorful "Mama Roux" and infectious "Jump Sturdy" to the stylish "Wash Mama Wash," buoyant cover of the traditional New Orleans favorite "Iko Iko" and especially joyful reading of "Let The Good Times Roll." A flashy blues-draped take on Buddy Guy's "A Man of Many Words" finds John teaming up with Guy and Eric Clapton. Of course, the new collection wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of John's timeless 1973 hit "Right Place Wrong Time" and tender "Such a Night," the latter a song that was also performed as part of The Band's "The Last Waltz" concert in 1976. Tell me more: The Blu-ray Slow Ride - Live In Concert released in April 2024 captures classic English rock quartet Foghat at an essential moment in time; the concert film was recorded and filmed at two dates in Houston, Texas in September 1999 — sadly lead singer and founding member Lonesome Dave Peverett passed away from complications related to kidney cancer in February 2000 at the age of 56 (less than five months after the performances featured on the title were recorded). The energetic concert is a rousing and great snapshot of Foghat; in addition to the talents of Peverett on lead vocals and guitar, lead guitar virtuoso Bryan Bassett, drummer Roger Earl and bassist Tony Stevens are seen locked in and firing on all cylinders. The dream track listing includes an extended take on "Drivin' Wheel," a rousing version of the classic blues cut "Somebody's Been Sleepin' In My Bed," and a dynamic slide guitar-anchored reading of the Peverett original "Stone Blue." Other highlights include an amped up take on Robert Johnson's blues nugget "Sweet Home Chicago," the beautiful blues ballad "Angel of Mercy" and the hard rocking "Fool For The City." The Jack Updyke-directed concert film wraps up with a powerful take on the Willie Dixon classic "I Just Want To Make Love To You" and a marathon version of the band's enduring 1975 hard rock hit "Slow Ride."

In addition there are segments across the film featuring interviews with the band members recorded at the time; at one point Everett notes the name "Foghat" had its genesis as a nonsense word he created during a childhood game of Scrabble he was playing with his brother.

Tell me more: Although it has been nearly 50 years since his premature death at the age of 27 in April 1975, Pete Ham's legacy as the principal singer-songwriter of 1970s power pop great Badfinger shines bright. Now a treasure trove of newly-discovered home demos recorded between 1966 and 1972 — many of them songs that were never recorded or released by Badfinger or that group's earlier incarnation The Iveys — have been gathered together for release on an essential limited edition audio CD titled Gwent Gardens issued by Y&T Music. The tracks on the physical special CD version of Gwent Gardens were released on March 8, 2024 and were also issued via all streaming services on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024. 

The impressive demos feature Ham performing with guitar or piano accompaniment; the prolific artist often double-tracked his vocals to add heft to the recordings. The 18-track collection begins with the poignant "The Day Begins," where Ham's signature vocals deliver a beautiful and yearning original. Equally poignant is the lovely "Let The Sun Shine Through," which is bolstered by Ham's falsetto vocals and several overdubbed instrumental tracks to showcase his vision for a full band version of the melodic gem. Indeed, the concert film is available on 4K UHD for the first time; the 4K Ultra HD title looks and sounds spectacular. The concert film chronicles Mötley Crue's final performance featuring its original lineup on Dec. 31, 2015 when the legendary quartet (singer Vince Neil, bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee and guitarist Mick Mars) performed at Staples Center in their hometown of Los Angeles in front of a capacity crowd. Opening with the surefire hit "Girls, Girls, Girls," the hard rock outfit delivered more than a dozen well-known originals, as well as a crowd-pleasing drum solo courtesy of Lee and guitar solo from Mars. The energy displayed by the band and dancers/backing vocalists Allison Kyler and Sofia Toufa never falters, and the enthusiasm of the crowd adds to the power of the performance; impressive pyrotechnics and a cutting-edge stage design also enhance the event. Among the early concert standouts performed by the band include the blazing rocker "Wild Side," slide guitar-adorned "Primal Scream," melodic "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" and blistering "Looks That Kill." Rocking favorites "Shout At The Devil," "Saints Of Los Angeles," and "Dr. Feelgood" are among the subsequent high points. The band caps off their regular set with an inspired "Kickstart My Heart" before closing the night with an emotional "Home Sweet Home." Bonus features on the disc include interviews with all four members of the band and more; a colorful booklet photographs of the band members and additional information on the concert film. "This is more than a tour," Nikki Sixx notes. "This is the end." Tell me more: August 30, 2024 marked the release of Oasis' Definitely Maybe (30th Anniversary) Deluxe Editions, an eagerly-awaited reissue of the British band's beloved 1994 debut released via Limited Edition Deluxe 4LP and Deluxe 2CD formats as well as as exclusive colored vinyl formats, cassette and digital — all formats include the 2014 remastered version of the album along with outtakes from the definitive album sessions at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall. Additional insight into the creation of the album by Liam Gallagher (vocals), Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, backing vocals), Paul Arthurs (rhythm guitar), Paul McGuigan (bass) and Tony McCarroll (drums) are early recordings of eight songs tracked at Monnow Valley Studio in 1993. 

The 2CD version reviewed here is definitely worthy of adding to any rock music lover's library; insightful liner notes penned by Hamish MacBain and colorful artwork featured in a 24-page booklet enhance the special reissue. Oasis' Definitely Maybe is truly one of the great debut albums of all time; timeless classics including a slew of winning singles ("Supersonic," "Shakermaker," "Live Forever" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol") and treasured album tracks ("Rock 'n' Roll Star," "Columbia" and "Slide Away") are as exhilarating in 2024 as they were when first heard in 1994. Disc 2 highlights abound including the Monnow Valley Studio takes on "Rock 'n' Roll Star," "Live Forever," "Up In The Sky" (the latter adorned by a psychedelic vibe), "Bring It On Down," and Sawmills Outtakes of "Columbia" and "Digsy's Dinner"; a beautiful acoustic-flavored recording of "Sad Song (Mauldeth Road West Demo, Nov. '92)" closes out the terrific reissue. The good news is the world will get to hear many of the Definitely Maybe classics when Oasis returns to play together live next year for the first time in more than 16 years as part of the "Oasis Live '25 Tour." Tell me more: Following its record-breaking IMAX Event Cinema release worldwide in January 2024, the concert film "Queen Rock Montreal" was released via Mercury Studios on May 10, 2024. The concert film was released as a double 4K Ultra High Definition package (the configuration reviewed here), as well as via several other configurations including a double Blu-ray, double audio CD, 2CD Limited edition and triple vinyl. A 3LP Colored Transparent Blue Vinyl package is available exclusively on the Queen Online Store at queenonline.com. The essential new title is a spectacular display of Queen captured at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec on Nov. 24 and 2, 1981 — the final concerts of the British rock quartet's "The Game Tour."  The 4K Ultra High Definition allows the viewer to watch the concert film in its original full-from aspect ratio or cropped to 16:9 widescreen; the state-of-the-art release also features optional high-dynamic-range (HDR) for both aspect ratios.

Singer-keyboardist Freddie Mercury, guitarist-vocalist Brian May, drummer-vocalist Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon were at the height of their collective powers when they were captured for this film (which was originally released in movie theaters in 1984); as detailed in the liner notes that are included with the title: "As would be expected of Queen, they took the form of the concert film to a new level, becoming the first group to shoot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm." The digitally remastered sound and visual quality on "Queen Rock Montreal" is extraordinary and the 96-minute concert includes a slew of the band's timeless hits as well as favorite album cuts. 

This writer was fortunate to catch Queen on "The Game Tour" when it came to Southern California in July 1980 and watching this film transported me back to the magic and power of that night. Highlights on the film include the night opening punk-styled take on "We Will Rock You," soaring "Play The Game," powerful "I'm In Love With My Car" featuring Taylor on lead vocals, tender "Save Me," crowd-pleasing "Under Pressure" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Although known for its melodic and winning radio hits, the band's hard rocking instincts were fully on display via killer runs through "Keep Yourself Alive," "Tie Your Mother Down," and "Sheer Heart Attack." The band's emotional closer, "We Are The Champions," brought wonderful chills to this fan.

As a bonus, the band's earth-shattering 21-minute performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985 upscaled to high definition for the first time ever (including brand new stereo, 5.1 and Dolby Atmos sound mixes) and video footage of Queen rehearsing for that benefit concert is also included (a short interview with the band is also featured). The seldom seen performance from Mercury and May performing "Is This The World We Created...?" later at the event is also included. A wonderful 16-page booklet filled with colorful photographs from the concert film is also included.

Tell me more: On Oct. 20, 1977, the only full-length concert featuring the classic Rainbow lineup of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, singer Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell ever professionally filmed was captured at Munich Olympiahalle in Germany during the band's 1977 European tour. Now the historic concert event is available as a wonderful must-own special edition 2CD+DVD set courtesy of Mercury Studios. Indeed, this is a concert that almost never was; Blackmore arrived in Munich close to showtime after reportedly being smuggled out of Austria after getting into trouble with police at a gig there two nights earlier. That event seemed to rouse Blackmore and company to deliver an especially riveting performance on this night. Over the course of just under two hours, Rainbow delivers a captivating set of favorites including the speedy opener "Kill The King" showcasing Dio's soaring lead vocals, the heavy "Mistreated" blending British hard rock, Renaissance and progressive rock styles, the ambitious "Catch The Rainbow" stretching from a beautiful opening to a fiery rocker, and the straight-forward aptly-titled "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll." The concert wraps with stellar versions of "Man On The Silver Mountain," "Still I'm Sad" and "Do You Close Your Eyes," the latter featuring Blackmore alone on stage destroying his electric guitar as part of a truly explosive finale. In addition to the full-length concert, the 146-minute DVD includes original promo videos for "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll," "Gates Of Babylon" and "L.A. Connection," as well as a photo gallery, slideshow with audio commentary, interviews, and the "Rainbow Over Texas '76" feature (the latter which includes addition interviews and performance footage). Tell me more: For the countless millions of Rolling Stones fans who were not able to attend the band's intimate concert at The Wiltern in Los Angeles in late 2002, the good news is that the 2024 multi-format title Live At The Wiltern puts fans squarely amidst the action at the historic concert staged at the 2,000+ seat venue on Nov. 22, 2002. Available on DVD + 2CD, Blu-ray + 2CD (the latter reviewed here), 2CD and 3LP, the show captured the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers performing a mix of enduring favorites and inspired covers before an enthusiastic crowd that included the likes of Tom Petty, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Johnny Depp, Stephen Stills and Eddie Murphy. This was a night where singer Mick Jagger, drummer Charlie Watts, guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood rocked for two hours; the top-tier supporting cast included bassist Darryl Jones, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, saxophone great Bobby Keys, backing vocalist Lisa Fischer and many others — all smiling and genuinely having a blast. The energy level and joyous music making never falters across the concert; from the time the Stones take the stage and open with a powerful "Jumpin' Jack Flash" the audience is treated to the thrill of a lifetime. Some of my favorites include the rollicking "Neighbours" with Richards unleashing some Chuck Berry-styled lead guitar licks, a rowdy "Going To A Go-Go" featuring Keys' stellar sax playing, the rootsy "Thru And Thru" with Richards on lead vocals, and an emotional reading of the Chicago blues classic "Rock Me Baby." The extended "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" features Watts' rapid-fire work on his kit with virtuoso turns from Keys, Jagger on harmonica and Woods' dazzling lead guitar; the 20-track setlist also includes solid performances of "Honky Tonk Women," "Brown Sugar" and "Tumbling Dice." Another key reason to grab this release is the slew of rarely-performed gems including "Stray Cat Blues," "No Expectations" and a cover of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," the latter featuring guest soul singer Solomon Burke. The physical package includes a wonderful 12-page booklet with detailed liner notes by Paul Sexton, as well as colorful photographs of the band members and more. As The Rolling Stones were prepping to headline two nights at legendary Wembley Stadium in June 1999 — the band's first London concerts in four years — they announced a surprise show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire for June 8, 1999. A truly intimate crowd of only 1,800 fans were on hand to hear The Rolling Stones perform a wide-ranging set of enduring hits as well as rarely-performed gems over an unforgettable 96 minutes. "Welcome to Shepherd's Bush," Mick Jagger notes to kick off the event. "I've been waiting to say that for a little bit." On Dec. 6, 2024, Mercury Studios released the concert film "Welcome to Shepherd's Bush" via multiple formats that fully capture the amazing once-in-a-lifetime show. (The title reviewed here marks the first ever 4K UltraHD release and includes a Dolby Atmos sound option). "Welcome to Shepherd's Bush" is also available via 2LP black vinyl package, direct-to-consumer two-LP set in 180-gram white vinyl, Blu-ray+2CD, and via a 2CD limited edition package of only 15,000 worldwide.

While Stones fans will be thrilled with the fiery versions of hits including "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (But I Like It)," "Honky Tonk Women" (the latter featuring guest Sheryl Crow), and trio of crowd-pleasing classics ("Tumbling Dice," "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash"), the real thrill of the title is the inclusion of so many seldom-heard nuggets. Indeed, the set includes the only known performance of "Moon Is Up" (from the band's Voodooo Lounge album), a stellar track bolstered by a melodic chorus that features Jagger on blues harp. "Melody" (from Black and Blue) is performed for only the second time ever, and another welcome rarity includes the catchy blues rocker "Brand New Car" bolstered by Ronnie Wood's wah pedal adorned guitar work. 

Keith Richards is featured on lead vocals on two strong performances ("You Got The Silver," "Before They Make Me Run"), and other highlights from the concert include the rollicking show opener "Shattered," freewheeling rocker "Respectable," and driving version of the classic "Route 66." Information: mercurystudios.co.

Backed by a top-tier band (including his Utopia bandmates Kasim Sulton, Jesse Gress, and Prairie Prince), the 160-minute concert focuses on material from Rundgren's return-to-form 2004 album Liars and beloved favorites from across his wide-ranging career. Early standouts include the synth-swept opener "Truth," introspective rocker "Buffalo Grass," electronica "Mammon," and sumptuous R&B-tinged version of "God Said." Tell me more: Live At US Festival is a Blu-ray title that captures guitar master Carlos Santana and his top-tier band at their legendary appearance at the US Festival staged in Southern California on Sept. 4, 1982. Directed by rockumentarian Glenn Aveni, Santana: Live At Us Festival chronicles one of Santana's most memorable and high-profile performances. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's band is outstanding; singer-rhythm guitarist Alex Ligertwood, keyboardist Richard Baker, bassist David Margen, drummer Graham Lear, percussionists Raul Rekow, Orestas Vilat and Armando Peraza bring a power and enthusiastic touch to all of the material performed here. The performance features Santana performing powerful versions of classics including "Black Magic Woman," Oye Como Va" and an especially dynamic take on "Nowhere To Run." Other highlights include a cover of the Zombies' "She's Not There" bolstered by Santana's signature lead guitar playing that segues into John McLaughlin's "Marbles," as well as the catchy rocker "Open Invitation." Tell me more: Originally released in 1979, JD Souther's You're Only Lonely was a nine-track album that featured a number of great original songs, including the bewitching title track which spent five weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts and was a #7 Pop hit. Now the masterwork has been reissued and is available for the first time in 35 years; the audio CD and digital versions add two previously unissued bonus tracks from the album's original recording sessions. Those not familiar with Souther's stunning talents as a singer, guitarist and songwriter should note that by the time he recorded his Columbia Records debut 45 years ago he had already penned hits for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and James Taylor. That level of excellence is heard across You're Only Lonely, including the gorgeous ballad "The Last In Love," lovely "White Rhythm and Blues," rollicking "'Til The Bars Burn Down," wistful countrified "The Moon Just Turned Blue," and rocking "Trouble In Paradise." The previously-unheard bonus tracks are treasures; the smoldering "Ever Faithful Woman" (enhanced by Daniel Kortchmar's stellar guitar work) and an early recording of "Bad News Travels Fast" (the latter would later be recorded for his 1984 Warner Bros. album Home by Dawn) complete the marvelous reissue. Among the notable guests who appear on the album are Eagles lead guitarist Don Felder, Phil Everly, Frey, Henley, Browne and sax great David Sanborn. Tell me more: A previously-unissued performance by British folk-rock troupe Steeleye Span, Live At The Bottom Line, 1974 is an exciting and wonderful audio document of a performance captured 50 years ago that ranks as one of this year's most outstanding concert recording releases. The recording features instrumental standouts such as "Beg Your Leave," "Irish Jigs (Including Paddy Clancy's)," and a fiery medley ("The Musical Priest/The Silver Spear/The High Reel") as well as sweeping songs like the driving folk rocker "Alison Gross," the dazzling duet "John Barleycorn," the troupe's enticing #14 UK hit "Gaudete" and spirited fiddle-anchored closer "The Mason's Apron." The recording also introduces one of the sextant's most beloved songs, "Thomas The Rhymer," a perfect fusion of British folk and rock bolstered by bewitching vocal harmonies. Tell me more: More than 40 years into the English duo's winning career, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith — better known as Tears for Fears — have finally released a concert album. Songs for a Nervous Planet was captured live in Franklin, Tennessee in 2023 and the physical 2CD edition comes housed in a three-panel foldout featuring a slew of great color images of the British duo. In addition to stellar versions of some of Tears for Fear's biggest hits (including "Everybody Wants To Rule the World," "Pale Shelter," "Break It Down Again," "Head Over Heels" and "Shout"), fans are treated to great live versions of material from 2022's full-length studio LP The Tipping Point. Tell me more: The Who's 1982 tour was memorable for a number of reasons; notably it was the last to feature drummer Kenney Jones and would also mark the British band's last full scale tour until 1989. Now a marvelous live recording of The Who's complete Oct. 13, 1982 performance captured on the second of two nights at New York's Shea Stadium has been released on audio CD and 3LP vinyl (Live At She Stadium 1982). Among the stellar versions of Who classics performed by singer Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, keyboardist Tim Gorman and aforementioned Jones are the rousing "I Can't Explain," lively artfully reworked "Sister Disco," fiery "Baba O'Riley" and "Who Are You," stirring "Love Reign o'er Me," thrilling "Won't Get Fooled Again." Because The Who was touring in the wake of the band's tenth studio album It's Hard (released a mere month before the Shea Stadium show date), this tour provided the first chance to hear live performances of cuts from that masterwork; an inspired version of the John Entwistle-penned "Dangerous" and rousing take on "It's Hard" are early standouts on the concert recording while "Eminence Front" is heard via a marathon performance that is especially moving in its power. The concert closes with fully reworked covers of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There," Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" and the 1962 Isley Brothers' hit "Twist and Shout" that collectively celebrate the power of rock 'n' roll. Tell me more: The release of the Peter Jackson documentary "Get Back" in 2021 focused an in-depth look at the monumental talent and undeniable chemistry of the Beatles and the British band's otherworldly ability to create some of the greatest songs of the rock era. Now the release of Canadian filmmaker Paul Saltzman's "Meeting The Beatles In India" provides a similarly compelling look at the Fab Four — this time focusing on their mythical time spent in India a year before the "Get Back" sessions. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, the documentary finds Saltzman vividly sharing his memories of his time befriending John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr at the Beatles Ashram (also known as Chaurasi Kutia) located in Rishikesh, a city in Northern India. The short period that the Beatles spent in India resulted in the writing of 48 songs in approximately 48 days, including favorites that fill the band's 1968 album The Beatles (better known as "The White Album"). In addition to his first person account of his time with the Beatles, Saltzman's amazing photographs of the Beatles add depth to the film, as do his reflections on his own spiritual journey that fatefully led him to study transcendental meditation alongside the Beatles with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The documentary features interviews with film director David Lynch, pre-eminent Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn, Pattie Boyd (married to George Harrison at the time of the trip to India) and even the real "Bungalow Bill."
