Today, Turnpike Troubadours debut a special rendition of Robert Earl Keen's wonderful song "Feelin' Good Again" featuring guest singer-mandolin player Sierra Hull.

In conjunction with the release, a powerful new music video is out today, featuring Keen and NFL star Christian McCaffrey. Directed by Cameron Gott, the video tells the story of people rediscovering themselves, capturing the hardships, quiet resilience and small moments of hope that shape their journeys. The tour follows the release of the band’s acclaimed album, The Price of Admission, which was surprise-released last spring via Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers (stream/purchase here). Produced by Shooter Jennings, the record debuted at #1 on the iTunes all-genre and country charts, as well as the Billboard Digital Albums and Current Digital Albums Sales charts, further cementing the band as an undeniable force. Throughout their renowned career, Turnpike Troubadours has amassed a massive following with more than 2.2 billion streams globally and over 1.7 million equivalent units sold to date. New music: The Alarm, Old Crow Medicine Show

In this column I review the final album release featuring the late Mike Peters with his groundbreaking band The Alarm, as well as an ambitious new collection from American troupe Old Crow Medicine Show.

Tell me more: Although Alarm frontman Mike Peters passed away after a 31-year battle fighting cancer on April 29, 2025, his incredible legacy has continued to grow thanks to the release of Transformation on May 29. The album's 12 songs crackle and soar via Mike Peter's passionate vocals, straightforward lyrics and winning arrangements. One of the most wonderfully surprising truths to be heard across the disc is how powerful and undiminished Peters' signature vocals sound despite the obvious challenges he faced during the recording of the album that spanned from Oct. 7, 2024 to Jan. 15, 2025. The anthemic opener "New Life," U2 flavored "Outlier," defiant "Saviour," "One In A Million" and uplifting "Live Today" (the latter is my favorite track on the album) are at odds with the challenging end-of-life struggles Peters faced during the recording of the album — all those tracks showcase his defiance to overcome seemingly impossible odds with candor and passion. Indeed, the fiery rocker "Chimera" offers a detailed look at some of the advanced medical procedures used by Peters' doctors to fight his disease. Other stellar cuts include the aptly-titled "Soul Town," life-affirming "In Unity" and celebratory "To Be Alive." As Alarm bandmate Jules Peters (she is also the wife of Mike Peters) notes in the album's press notes: "Mike lived a life of beauty and never gave up right to the very end." Make sure to get a listen to this essential album. "'Last American Waltz' is a love song to America in 3/4 time," says bandleader Ketch Secor. Catching up on 2025: Turnpike Troubadours, Cheap Trick, Edward Rogers, The Black Keys, The Iveys

Before the arrival of 2026, I wanted to highlight a handful of the year's best albums I hadn't yet celebrated in previous columns. The latest full-length discs from Cheap Trick, Turnpike Troubadours, The Black Keys and Edward Rogers as well as a new anthology featuring The Iveys are among my favorite audio releases of the year.

Title: The Price of Admission (Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers)

You might like if you enjoy: Shooter Jennings, Trampled by Turtles

Tell me more: I was recently able to catch up with the Turnpike Troubadours' sixth album, The Price of Admission, released in April 2025. An 11-track masterwork where the timeless sounds of neotraditional country, honky-tonk and Americana are fused with songs of incredible lyrical depth, the Shooter Jennings-produced album immerses the listener upon a single listen. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Evan Felker's top-tier voice delivers the wide range of material with real world emotion while the rest of the ensemble delivers nuanced and virtuoso musical accompaniment at every turn. Highlights on the stellar album include the deeply affecting opener "On The Red River" (a powerful song that looks at loss and love for a late father), the countrified "Searching For A Light" that looks at remaining hopeful despite life's bona fide challenges, the uptempo bluegrass-fueled "The Devil Plies His Trade," the exuberant "Ruby Ann" celebrating the magic of new love, and the rousing roots rocker "What Was Advertised." Title: All Washed Up (BMG)

You might like if you enjoy: Cheap Trick, Matthew Sweet, Green Day

Tell me more: Cheap Trick returned in a big way in 2025 through a number of high profile appearances (including at the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 7 where the quartet performed in honor of their "lifelong brothers" KISS), as well as via the release of the beloved American rock band's 21st studio album All Washed Up. On the 11-track All Washed Up, singer Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Daxx X Nielsen deliver a bunch of killer originals with their signature zeal, blending power pop and alt rock with aplomb. They bust right out of the gate with the driving title track, and follow that up with the winning likes of the fiery "The Riff That Won't Quit," haunting "Bet It All" that looks at the dangers of gambling, the melodic romance-themed "The Best Thing," soaring "Twelve Gates," aptly-titled "Love Gone," bewitching "A Long Way to Worcester" and music hall-styled "Wham Boom Bang," the latter album closer really showcasing Zander's impressive tenor vocals. Title: Astor Place (Think Like A Key Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Bedsit Poets, Rogers and Butler, The Zombies

Tell me more: New York City-based singer-songwriter Edward Rogers is back with Astor Place, his first solo album in five years. Fans of '60s-era classic rock, modern power pop and literate singer-songwriter styles will all find something to love across the Don Fleming-produced 10-track disc. Among the winning parade of originals are the Baroque pop-styled "The Olde Church," melodic "Lies Cries and Alibis," enticing tuneful garage rocker "Romeo," acoustic foray "Diamonds Hidden in the Pearls," poetic "I Walk Behind Your Shadow," and evocative "On the Other Side of the Rainbow." Tell me more: The Black Keys returned this year with No Rain, No Flowers, an album showcasing the myriad of strengths of the ambitious Akron, Ohio-spawned duo (singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney). The shimmering opener "No Rain, No Flowers," soulful "Make You Mine," melodic indie rocker "A Little Too High," playful romantic romp "Babygirl," melancholy-filled "Down to Nothing," edgy "Man On A Mission," dance floor-ready "Kiss It" and roots ballad "Neon Moon" are among the standouts on the Black Keys' 13th album. Title: Miniskirts And Rainbows (Y&T Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, The Beatles, the Hollies

Tell me more: Miniskirts And Rainbows is an important new collection that features 19 tracks recorded between 1966 and 1969 by The Iveys, a pioneering power pop band that would later rise to fame as Badfinger courtesy of a series of memorable hit singles (including "No Matter What," "Come and Get It" and "Baby Blue"). Although many of the tracks on Miniskirts And Rainbows are demos and not originally intended for commercial release, the historical importance and palpable spirit of the essential recordings shine across the set. Among the wonderful cuts are "Cleopatra In A Miniskirt" (featuring lead vocals from Tom Evans), the buoyant "I Love You" (sung by Pete Ham), countrified delight "Blodwyn [demo]" (featuring outstanding vocal harmonies from Ham and Ron Griffiths), the Baroque ballad "Angelique [demo]," the psychedelic "Black & White Rainbows [version 2]," poignant Ham-penned "Yesterday Ain't Coming Back [demo]," Beach Boys flavored "Love Means Happiness," nostalgic "All The Fun Of The Fair" and Ham's sentimental "I Miss You [demo]."  Information: badfingerlibrary.com.

August 5, 2025: Today, acclaimed singer/songwriter Rhett Miller announced A lifetime of riding by night, his tenth studio album that will be released on October 10 via ATO Records. Produced by his Old 97’s bandmate Murry Hammond, the 13-song collection was recorded just days before undergoing a high-risk surgery on his vocal cords. Threaded with his lived-in reflection on mortality and love in all forms, the album contains some of Miller’s most unguarded material yet—an achievement he attributes to revelations gleaned through his recent work in teaching songwriting at The New School in Manhattan, as well as the eclectic lineup of co-writers including Turnpike Troubadours frontman Evan Felker, Caitlin Rose, Nicole Atkins, and Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms. The album is now available for pre-order, including a limited edition vinyl run of 300 copies pressed on frosted Coke bottle, available only via Rhett Miller’s and ATO’s web store.  This morning, Miller released the album’s first single “Come As You Are” that features Evan Felker, who also co-wrote the song, on background vocals. About the song, Miller explains, “That song came together at a time when Evan and I were both wrestling with the difficulty of leaving our loved ones behind to go on tour. It’s a sweet song but there’s a sadness to it, which feels reflective of the true human condition. Evan's band Turnpike Troubadours recorded a version of the song a few years back as a single, but it's always been in my mind that I wanted to record my own version of the song. Despite it being a co-write, ‘Come As You Are’ feels like a really personal moment. That said, I get a tickle out of hearing Evan's harmony on there – he's such a talented guy and a great friend." Evan Felker adds, “Rhett has been a never-ending source of inspiration and wit and humility for my career and for the times when I didn’t have one. He writes with a passion for the world that is as reckless as it is correct and smart. Whatever deal he made with the devil, I want that one too. He’s the prime example of why you should meet your heroes.” Mainly recorded at Dave’s Room in Los Angeles, the album marks Miller’s first time enlisting Hammond as a producer since his solo debut album Mythologies (a 1989 LP created when he was 17-years-old). “Murry was a mentor to me when we made that first record all those decades ago, and this album felt like the right time to work with him in that capacity again,” Miller says. “I gave him carte blanche in a way I never have with any other producer—we went in and recorded 20 songs, and I flew home to New York without even knowing which songs he’d end up using or what the finished versions would sound like. I just let go and trusted Murry completely.” His first solo effort since 2022’s The Misfit (an extravagant collision of dream-pop and psychedelia), A lifetime of riding by night centers on a gorgeously sparse form of folk/indie-rock that reveals every nuance and idiosyncrasy of Miller’s vocal performance. “There’s a lot of terrifying stories about the type of surgery I received, and I wanted to record the album first because I knew the worst outcomes were on the table,” he says. “I was in a lot of physical pain as I was singing these songs; there are moments when you can hear me really struggling. But as much as I thought about going back and re-recording the vocals once I’d recovered, I knew those imperfections were part of the DNA of the record. About Rhett Miller:  Rhett Miller is a Texas-born, New York-based singer-songwriter, author, podcaster, actor and professor who has fronted the band Old 97’s for the last 32 years. Miller has released 12 albums with Old 97’s and will release his tenth solo album A lifetime of riding by night on October 10 via ATO Records. In addition to his songwriting, Miller is an accomplished writer who has authored short stories, essays and articles that have been featured in Rolling Stone, Bookforum, Sports Illustrated, McSweeney’s, The Atlantic and Salon. He has published two children's books: The Baby-Changing Station (released via Little, Brown) and No More Poems! Miller is also the host of Wheels Off, a podcast about the messy reality of living a creative life. The “must listen” (Rolling Stone) podcast has released well over two hundred episodes over the last 6 years and has featured prominent guests like Tig Notaro, Jeff Tweedy, Jennifer Egan, Billy Strings, Michael Chabon, Norah Jones and many more. As an actor Rhett has appeared in films, most recently Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, in which he performs a song he co-wrote with director James Gunn.
