Catching up on 2025: Turnpike Troubadours, Cheap Trick, Edward Rogers, The Black Keys, The Iveys

Before the arrival of 2026, I wanted to highlight a handful of the year's best albums I hadn't yet celebrated in previous columns. The latest full-length discs from Cheap Trick, Turnpike Troubadours, The Black Keys and Edward Rogers as well as a new anthology featuring The Iveys are among my favorite audio releases of the year.

Title: The Price of Admission (Bossier City Records/Thirty Tigers)

You might like if you enjoy: Shooter Jennings, Trampled by Turtles

Tell me more: I was recently able to catch up with the Turnpike Troubadours' sixth album, The Price of Admission, released in April 2025. An 11-track masterwork where the timeless sounds of neotraditional country, honky-tonk and Americana are fused with songs of incredible lyrical depth, the Shooter Jennings-produced album immerses the listener upon a single listen. Singer-songwriter/guitarist Evan Felker's top-tier voice delivers the wide range of material with real world emotion while the rest of the ensemble delivers nuanced and virtuoso musical accompaniment at every turn. Highlights on the stellar album include the deeply affecting opener "On The Red River" (a powerful song that looks at loss and love for a late father), the countrified "Searching For A Light" that looks at remaining hopeful despite life's bona fide challenges, the uptempo bluegrass-fueled "The Devil Plies His Trade," the exuberant "Ruby Ann" celebrating the magic of new love, and the rousing roots rocker "What Was Advertised." Title: All Washed Up (BMG)

You might like if you enjoy: Cheap Trick, Matthew Sweet, Green Day

Tell me more: Cheap Trick returned in a big way in 2025 through a number of high profile appearances (including at the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 7 where the quartet performed in honor of their "lifelong brothers" KISS), as well as via the release of the beloved American rock band's 21st studio album All Washed Up. On the 11-track All Washed Up, singer Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Daxx X Nielsen deliver a bunch of killer originals with their signature zeal, blending power pop and alt rock with aplomb. They bust right out of the gate with the driving title track, and follow that up with the winning likes of the fiery "The Riff That Won't Quit," haunting "Bet It All" that looks at the dangers of gambling, the melodic romance-themed "The Best Thing," soaring "Twelve Gates," aptly-titled "Love Gone," bewitching "A Long Way to Worcester" and music hall-styled "Wham Boom Bang," the latter album closer really showcasing Zander's impressive tenor vocals. Title: Astor Place (Think Like A Key Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, Bedsit Poets, Rogers and Butler, The Zombies

Tell me more: New York City-based singer-songwriter Edward Rogers is back with Astor Place, his first solo album in five years. Fans of '60s-era classic rock, modern power pop and literate singer-songwriter styles will all find something to love across the Don Fleming-produced 10-track disc. Among the winning parade of originals are the Baroque pop-styled "The Olde Church," melodic "Lies Cries and Alibis," enticing tuneful garage rocker "Romeo," acoustic foray "Diamonds Hidden in the Pearls," poetic "I Walk Behind Your Shadow," and evocative "On the Other Side of the Rainbow." Title: No Rain, No Flowers (Warner Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Beck, The Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr.

Tell me more: The Black Keys returned this year with No Rain, No Flowers, an album showcasing the myriad of strengths of the ambitious Akron, Ohio-spawned duo (singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney). The shimmering opener "No Rain, No Flowers," soulful "Make You Mine," melodic indie rocker "A Little Too High," playful romantic romp "Babygirl," melancholy-filled "Down to Nothing," edgy "Man On A Mission," dance floor-ready "Kiss It" and roots ballad "Neon Moon" are among the standouts on the Black Keys' 13th album. Title: Miniskirts And Rainbows (Y&T Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Badfinger, The Beatles, the Hollies

Tell me more: Miniskirts And Rainbows is an important new collection that features 19 tracks recorded between 1966 and 1969 by The Iveys, a pioneering power pop band that would later rise to fame as Badfinger courtesy of a series of memorable hit singles (including "No Matter What," "Come and Get It" and "Baby Blue"). Although many of the tracks on Miniskirts And Rainbows are demos and not originally intended for commercial release, the historical importance and palpable spirit of the essential recordings shine across the set. Among the wonderful cuts are "Cleopatra In A Miniskirt" (featuring lead vocals from Tom Evans), the buoyant "I Love You" (sung by Pete Ham), countrified delight "Blodwyn [demo]" (featuring outstanding vocal harmonies from Ham and Ron Griffiths), the Baroque ballad "Angelique [demo]," the psychedelic "Black & White Rainbows [version 2]," poignant Ham-penned "Yesterday Ain't Coming Back [demo]," Beach Boys flavored "Love Means Happiness," nostalgic "All The Fun Of The Fair" and Ham's sentimental "I Miss You [demo]."  Information: badfingerlibrary.com.

The one and only Cheap Trick have shared a video for their latest single, “The Riff That Won’t Quit.” The pulse-pounding latest single is from their eagerly awaited new album, which arrives this Friday, November 14, via BMG. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers’ eagerly anticipated 21st studio album will be available digitally as well as on standard black vinyl and CD. A collector’s edition Orange Marble vinyl variant limited to 1,000 units is available to pre-order exclusively via the band's new D2C store. Titles: The Rill Thing; King of Rock and Roll (Omnivore Recordings)

Tell me more: When Little Richard passed away at the age of 87 on May 9, 2020, it rekindled interest in the life and music of the pioneering rock and roll great. Now Omnivore Recordings has reissued expanded versions of two of his most important albums, 1970's The Rill Thing and 1971's King of Rock and Roll. Best known for his string of seminal '50s hits ("Tutti Fruiti," "Long Tall Sally," "Rip It Up" and many more), the Macon, Georgia native enjoyed a well-deserved comeback with these ambitious early '70s LPs where his signature vocals were at their peak. The Rill Thing was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and finds Little Richard — who also produced the album — delivering an album that fuses blues, soul, funk and R&B together flawlessly. There are a plethora of fantastic moments on the album including the potent rock 'n' soul leadoff track "Freedom Blues," Creedence Clearwater Revival-mining "Greenwood, Mississippi," the ambitious title track (which runs more than 10 minutes!), the New Orleans swoop "Lovesick Blues," a joyful horns-draped version of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" and bonus track "Shake A Hand (If You Can)." 

Fourteen months after the release of The Rill Thing, Little Richard rebounded with the equally convincing King of Rock and Roll, produced by H.B. Barnum. The expanded LP features a fine mix of original songs, along with reworked covers of Motown and rock classics. Listening to the spirited '50s title track, gospel-meets-soul version of "Joy To The World," rocking take on The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" and joyful "The Way You Do The Things You Do" all find the rocker tapping into all of his strengths. The funky "Green Power," soulful ballad "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and retooled "Born On The Bayou" shine an especially bright light on his elevated vocal excellence during this period. Both of these Cheryl Pawelski-produced reissues come with essential bonus tracks, new liner notes penned by Bill Dahl, photos and ephemera. Information: OmnivoreRecordings.com.

Title: Origins Vol. 2 (Entertainment One)

You might like if you enjoy: Ace Frehley, Lita Ford, Robin Zander, Bruce Kulick

Tell me more: Revisiting classic tracks from the top-tier likes of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks can be challenging because the originals endure in their timeless perfection. But on his new dozen-strong set Origins Vol. 2 KISS founding member Ace Frehley (lead guitar, vocals) is able to meet that challenge by covering beloved classics with virtuoso guitar work, a hard rock edge, an unbridled sense of joy and a little help from some good friends. Among the smoking cuts on the disc is a high-octane tear through the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (featuring Lita Ford on lead vocals), a rousing cover of Humble Pie's 1972 blues-rocker favorite "30 Days In The Hole" (with Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander able to deliver on the lead vocals delivered by the late Steve Marriott in the original) and the mind-bending Hendrix cut "Manic Depression" (with Frehley and Grand Funk Railroad's Bruce Kulick both soloing). KISS lost more than a step with the departure of Frehley in 1982 (he did rejoin the band from 1996 to the end of 2001); just listen to the blistering take on Mountain's "Never In My Life" and Cream's "Politician" to hear Frehley's killer guitar work in spades. Other treasures on the LP include a cool take on Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Kicks" and a cover of his former band's "She" (featured on the 1975 album "Dressed to Kill"). Title: Better Days (SodaStar Music)

You might like if you enjoy: Jason Falkner, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., Maple Mars, the Lickerish Quartet

Tell me more: Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Rick Hromadka's Better Days is the perfect find for those in search of music that is melodic, memorable and expertly crafted. Hromadka (Maple Mars, Ruby Free, Double Naught Spies) and a batch of musical pals have created an album that is one of the best power pop releases in memory, a surging and artful effort that is bolstered by excellent song craft, experimental flourishes aplenty and nuanced musicianship. The atmospheric opener "Better Days," exhilarating melodic rocker "Searchlight," psychedelic-aimed "Drive On" and breezy "The Ever After" are early highlights on the album. The driving "Full Blown Freakout," genre bending "Robot Lover" and lavish "The Last Volcano" make the second half of the disc equally strong. Title: Avalanche (HBO's "I'll Be Gone In The Dark")

Tell me more: Singer-songwriter Aimee Mann has released a evocative version of Leonard Cohen's ballad "Avalanche," which is now featured as the title track for HBO's true-crime docuseries "I'll Be Gone In The Dark." Covering Cohen can be tricky and few artists have done it with the power and artful grandeur to do the original material justice; Mann's haunting and faithful cover of "Avalanche" is sheer joy and well worth discovering. Sights and Sounds: TJR on Beck's $60 go-to guitar; Cheap Trick, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Who's 'WHO'

Here are some noteworthy items I wasn't able to feature during the week that are worthy checking out...

TJR has posted his must-see video titled "Beck Recorded His Albums With a $60 Guitar," and it's a fascinating watch and well worth your time.

Very few (including yours truly) likely had a chance to pick up Cheap Trick's limited-edition vinyl Black Friday Record Store Day release, a fiery take on John Lennon's 1971 protest song "Gimme Some Truth." But now the American rockers have issued the track on streaming platforms. I'm loving this. Get a listen via YouTube here.

Cheap Trick notes that the rousing cover teases the band's upcoming 19th studio album, which will be the quartet's first since the 2017 album We're All Alright! Lead singer Robin Zander's vocals are incredible on the track.

Mary Chapin Carpenter’s new single, “Our Man Walter Cronkite,” is out today. Watch the song’s official music video, premiering at Rolling Stone, HERE.

Of the song, Carpenter shares, “Growing up, Walter Cronkite was in our house Monday through Friday, presenting the news as The Most Trusted Man In America, as he was known in his time. My parents raised us to believe that people in jobs like Cronkite's told the truth; they raised us to believe in a world that reaches out to those who need help, that does not turn away from those less fortunate, or homeless, or those forced to leave their country because of the threat of violence, poverty and persecution. The arms were there to hold them, the eyes to see them, and the hearts of the world were there to love them. Because that was the right thing. It’s a different time now. I miss my parents, and I miss Walter Cronkite.”

Produced by Jamie Mefford (Gregory Alan Isakov, Nathaniel Rateliff) and recorded at Colorado Sound Studios, “Our Man Walter Cronkite” is the first new music released by Carpenter since last year’s acclaimed Sometimes Just The Sky, which celebrated her acclaimed 30-year recording career. Of the project, Folk Alley proclaimed, “As an artistic statement, the album is a feat,” while Billboard asserted, “…the new rendition features not only different flavors and textures created by the players but also a deeper meaning within the lyrics, which hold up 30 years later.”

The Who are back with their first new album (titled WHO, and released on Friday, Dec. 6) since 2006's Endless Wire. Although I have not yet had a chance to listen to the long-awaited WHO, Rock Cellar magazine has a overview that I thought I would share. You can read it here.
