Tell me more: A dozen albums into their incredible 38-year career, Colorado-based rockers Big Head Todd & The Monsters sound like they are just getting started. Indeed, the celebrated quartet is heard firing on all cylinders across their newly-released full-length disc Her Way Out. The rollicking opener "Her Way Out" is propulsive and infectious, singer-guitarist Todd Park Mohr detailing the end of a failed relationship with powerful candor. The rousing "Thunderbird" recalls a Southern-fried take on AC/DC-styled hard rock with Mohr, drummer Brian Nevin, bassist Rob Squires and guitarist Jeremy Lawton cutting loose with abandon before slowing down for the reflective blues rock cut "Crush." The 11-track disc is filled with original gems stretching from the shimmering opener "Magic Piano" and graceful single "Teenage Summer" (the latter showcasing Neil Finn's yearning vocals) to the exhilarating power pop foray "The Howl," sumptuous "Some Greater Plan (for Claire)," psychedelic-tinged "I Can't Keep Up With You" and poignant closer "Night Song." Tell me more: June 6, 2024 marked the fifth anniversary of the passing of groundbreaking singer-songwriter/pianist Malcolm John Rebeennack, Jr. — better known as Dr. John. The beloved champion of New Orleans who fused jazz, blues, funk and swamp rock together into a signature brew is celebrated on the wonderful new collection Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974, a wonderful 26-track retrospective revisiting choice material John released at the beginning of his high-profile solo career via a parade of memorable Atco/Atlantic album releases. The wealth of musical riches on the collection extends from the spoken word-anchored opener "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya," colorful "Mama Roux" and infectious "Jump Sturdy" to the stylish "Wash Mama Wash," buoyant cover of the traditional New Orleans favorite "Iko Iko" and especially joyful reading of "Let The Good Times Roll." A flashy blues-draped take on Buddy Guy's "A Man of Many Words" finds John teaming up with Guy and Eric Clapton. Of course, the new collection wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of John's timeless 1973 hit "Right Place Wrong Time" and tender "Such a Night," the latter a song that was also performed as part of The Band's "The Last Waltz" concert in 1976. Working with Dan Miller (guitarist of They Might Be Giants) and novelist Rob Sharenow, Shatner brings the world alive via a collection of colorful and whimsical songs where he uses his signature baritone spoken word style to educate and entertain youngsters about some unique corners of the animal kingdom. Tell me more: One of the truly great American rock bands to emerge in the 1990s, Collective Soul has scored a slew of memorable hits including "Shine," "December," "Where The River Flows," "The World I Know" and "Run." Now the band fronted by brothers Ed Roland (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Dean Roland (rhythm guitar) is back with the outstanding 20-track Here To Eternity. The lead-off track "Mother's Love" is an infectious and melodic hard rocker showcasing Collective Soul's brilliant knack at crafting great verses and choruses that fit together perfectly. Other tracks capture that same undeniable approach, each showcasing the rock quintet's magic. Tell me more: At once a genre-defying artist and the very sonic definition of New Orleans' timeless sound, Malcolm "Mac" Rebenack, Jr. — better known as Dr. John — had long spoke about wanting to record a county and western album to pay homage to the songwriters and music makers whose songs had touched him. Rebennack was in the midst of realizing that dream when a heart attack tragically ended his life on June 6, 2019. The Grammy-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Famer who had masterfully fused soul, R&B, funk, rock and blues since the 1950s was only 77.  The good news is that the resulting posthumous masterwork Things Happen That Way (released via Rounder Records on Sept. 23) showcase those final recordings and fully celebrate Dr. John's groundbreaking six-decade-long recording career. The range of material stretches from a wistful take showcasing his distinctive vocals and piano playing on Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," an urgent reading of Hank Williams' 1951 classic "Ramblin' Man" and a playful take on the Traveling Wilburys' "End of the Line" (the latter bolstered by Aaron Neville's vocals) to his own co-writes with famed guitarist Shane Theriot ("Holy Water," "Sleeping Dogs Best Left Alone," "Give Myself a Good Talkin' To"). Willie Nelson joins Dr. John on a R&B-flavored take of the traditional "Gimme That Old Time Religion." The album's closing title track (written by Jack Henderson Clement) is poignant, elevated by Dr. John's rich baritone and sparse piano work. Tell me more: A notable departure from his work with Dallas, Texas' alt-country favorites Old 97's and previous solo work, singer-songwriter Rhett Miller's ninth solo album The Misfit is a rich hybrid of psychedelic pop, indie folk rock and cosmic dream-pop bound by probing songcraft. The confessional "Follow You Home," evocative psychedelic rocker "Heart Attack Days," rootsy ballad "Already There," shimmering "Just When It Gets Good," luxurious "Fascination," reflective "The White Tops" and ardent piano-anchored "Let Me Go There With You" are among the great cuts that find Miller at the top of his game. Tell me more: Who knew that following the breakup of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Derek & The Dominos, a principal member from each of those illustrious troupes would join forces to write and record a killer full-length album that was never released — until September 2022. CCR drummer Doug "Cosmo" Clifford and Derek & the Dominos singer-keyboardist Bobby Whitlock were joined by bassists Donald "Duck" Dunn and Tom Miller, as well as guitarists David Vega and Mike O'Neill on the previously-unissued California Gold. Recorded at the infamous Cosmos Factory and other area Bay Area studios, the 12-track disc will definitely appeal to fans of classic '70s blues rock outfits such as Humble Pie,  Grand Funk Railroad and the Doobie Brothers. The terrific track listing includes the aptly-titled "Good Times," bluesy "Get Down Fever," soul music mining "It's Always Darkest Before The Dawn," hard-edged "Do Or Die" and soaring "I'm Happy Just Being Alive." My favorite original on the album is the driving "Purple Mountain," an enticing six-minute rocker bolstered by sublime lead guitar work, deft drumming from Clifford along with Whitlock's signature lead vocals and keyboard playing. Title: Denim & Diamonds (New West Records)

You might like if you enjoy: Loretta Lynn, Kasey Chambers, Nikki Lane

Tell me more: In the wake of the arrival of the global pandemic a parade of talented artists have issued probing and powerful albums that reflect a singular moment in time when the world was seemingly stopped in its tracks. Add Nikki Lane's name to that list of musical greats issuing a standout album over the past year or so. Denim & Diamonds is a wonderful leap forward for the Nashville-based songstress, with a blend of roots rock, Americana and alt-country showcased across the 10-track disc. The album was completed at a unique point just after the last days of Lane's extended tour in support of her 2017 album Highway Queen and after the beginning of the lockdown forcing everyone indoor. Lane enlisted famed Queens of the Stone Age leader Joshua Homme to help bring her vision to life. The melodic "First High" with its undeniable chorus, haunting alt-country ballad "Faded," rousing roots rocker "Born Tough" and defiant "Try Harder" are among the early standouts on the wonderful album. August 19, 2022 – There are few artists who are as closely associated with New Orleans as Malcolm John “Mac” Rebennack, Jr., known to music fans the world over as Dr. John. His Nite Tripper persona was, for many, their introduction to the music and culture of New Orleans, and Rebennack was the ultimate ambassador for his hometown’s artistic heritage.

 

When Rebennack set out to record Things Happen That Way, one of the featured guest artists he invited to participate in the sessions was fellow New Orleanian Aaron Neville, whose friendship with Mac dates back to their teen years. Today, their jubilant, joyful rendition of The Traveling Wilburys’ classic “End of the Line,” on which they are also joined by rising star Katie Pruitt, is released. Listen to the track HERE.

 

Rebennack was planning future projects when his life was unexpectedly cut short in 2019. Now, three years after his untimely passing, in a world complicated by COVID-19, Things Happen That Way will see the light of day. The album, which features three brand new original compositions, a mesmerizing reworking of Dr. John’s 1968 classic “I Walk on Guilded Splinters, and new interpretations of songs by Willie Nelson, Cowboy Jack Clement, Hank Williams, and The Traveling Wilburys will be released on September 23. He was in the midst of recording a new studio album and planning future projects when his life was suddenly cut short in 2019.

Karla R. Pratt, Dr. John’s daughter and the album’s executive producer, spoke with Rolling Stone’s David Browne about what inspired Rebennack’s choice of cover songs, calling them “’a musical tip of the hat to the greats who preceded him,’ like Williams, Cash, and Nelson.” 

 

“Years ago he talked about how hip Hank Williams was,” she told Browne. “He loved how simple yet emotionally complex Hank’s songs are, that they have a hook with a twist. For this album inspired by listening to the Louisiana Hayride [radio show] and icons of country and western, he was excited to do songs in a way that evokes emotion that sticks with you long after one of the songs — done his soulful way — is played.”

Icons reveal magic anew: Queen, Rush, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Dr. John tribute

Tell me more: Queen has long been recognized as one of the most adventuresome artists in the history of rock, and the quartet's far-flung instincts and virtuoso talents shine bright on Queen On Air, a new collection featuring the band's complete BBC radio sessions. Six magical sessions recorded between February 1973 and October 1977 anchor the 2CD and 3-LP vinyl editions, while those who opt to get a deluxe 6-disc edition (reviewed here) will be treated to highlights from three concert broadcasts (from 1973, 1981 and 1986), as well as more than three and a half hours of interviews (including the last-ever interview with all four members together that was conducted in 1989). The performances are stunning, with versions of the hard-rocking "Keep Yourself Alive," bona fide blues gem "See What A Fool I've Been," the prog rocker "Great King Rat" and a speedy "We Will Rock You" among the must-hear tracks. Queen's brilliance is clear from the earliest recording (the Renaissance-tinged "My Fairy King" is the first song), and really is fascinating to see just how quickly Queen developed into one of rock's most innovative and successful artists. To be sure, the Dale Heslip-directed film (which will be officially released on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016) is a poignant and affecting look at the band's 40-year relationship with the fans and the enduring friendships that bind Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart together. But Rush | Time Stand Still also captures the band's magnificent farewell tour that took them to 35 cities in 2015, celebrating the 40-year history of a band that wanted to say goodbye on their own terms. In addition to interviews with the three band members, rehearsal and performance footage, and glimpses of life on the road, there are plenty of probing looks at the band's dedicated fan base and the crew members who are part of the Rush family. Memories in Rock - Live in Germany features 18 tracks performed by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and the selections are pure magic. A breathtaking introduction via the Deep Purple classic "Highway Star," the potent British blues-styled "Mistreated," heavy metal classic "Man on the Silver Mountain" and dazzling "Perfect Stranges" are among the great performances captured here. The great news is Blackmore's guitar work is emotionally and technically stunning across the 139-minute title, showcasing the level of firepower of his high-profile '70s and '80s glory days. The singer-songwriter-pianist was recently celebrated with a special concert at New Orleans' Saenger Theatre, where he was joined by a diverse group of famed musicians to perform 22 songs written or made famous by the icon, now gathered together for the multi-format release The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: Celebrating Mac and His Music. The concert (available as an audio 2CD release, or as a concert film on DVD or Blu-ray) kicks off with Dr. John and Bruce Springsteen joining forces in an uptempo take on the classic "Right Place Wrong Time," and the energy and enthusiasm of the players never ebbs. Tell me more: Singer-songwriter-guitarist Justin Hayward will forever be best known as one of the principal players with the Moody Blues, but discerning listeners should seek out his latest effort Spirits…Live — Live at the Buckhead Theatre, Atlanta, a wonderful live collection recorded on Aug. 17, 2013 on the final night of his tour in support of his recently released solo album Spirits of the Western Sky. The idea of the tour was to present audiences with intimate, acoustic-styled versions of classic and recent songs. The audience was treated to a terrific concert via the sweeping country-western folk epic “The Western Sky,” the gentle acoustic guitar-backed ballad “The Eastern Sun” (that ends with Hayward singing in an impressive extended falsetto) and an emotive reading of the alt-country original “It’s Cold Outside Of Your Heart.” Additionally, Moody Blues fans will be pleased with the intimate and emotive takes on that band’s “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Question,” “Nights in White Satin” and “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere.” Information: JustinHayward.com.
